THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe september edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION Whether it’s to a sigh of relief or tear filled eyes, we say farewell to the summer holidays and hello to the new school year! Which, for many of us working parents, means a return to “normality” (or sanity!) - it will be a whole year before we have to worry about the logistical nightmare again and before we hear those nerve jangling words, “What are we going to do today?” September is the start of the new school year, which promises new beginnings and new opportunities but it doesn’t have to be the domain of the younger student. There are many courses for mature students that are enrolling in September and many are featured in this month’s edition. Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw or paint? Learn a language or to arrange flowers? Make balloon decorations or art? Take up beekeeping? Become a qualified Beauty Therapist? Join a voluntary group or a friendship group? Well, this is your month to take action. I read a quote from a 93 year old New Yorker who said that “... something amazing happens every time I force myself to go outside...” Make this the month where you force yourself to go outside or feel the fear and do it any way. Go on, I dare you... Until next month,

Lorraine

rspca stort valley Would you like to help RSPCA Stort Valley help homeless cats? This is a special appeal for Fosterers needed for cats waiting for homes.

We are looking for dedicated and compassionate fosterers to join our team, and are appealing for anyone who has a space in their house for one or a pair of cats until a suitable home can be found. We are looking for people with no pets of their own - maybe you would love a cat of your own but don’t want the expense, or perhaps have to go away sometimes so having your own cat wouldn’t be practical? Or maybe you just like the idea of helping a cat.

RSPCA Stort Valley Branch Registered Charity No. 233908

would like more information about fostering cats that are waiting to go to a permanent home. We will be happy to visit you and have a chat to explain in more detail and don’t worry, an enquiry does not mean you have committed yourself. For further information about us please see our website at www.rspcastortvalley.org.uk

We will provide the food, litter and any out of pocket expenses and all equipment needed is supplied by us. What you will provide is your time and plenty of love. It is essential that you are home at least part of every day and you would need to live in the Harlow, Bishops Stortford or close surrounding areas so that it would be practical to bring the cats to our vet clinic in The Stow, Harlow when necessary. Your own transport would also be essential. This job can be demanding, tiring, at times emotional and should not be taken on by the faint hearted, it can also be extremely rewarding. Please phone our clinic or email us at with a contact number we can call you on if you

Great st Mary’s church the sawbridgeworth big knit has reached over 700ft in length Each year a sponsored event is organised to help raise money for repairs to Great St Mary’s Church. In the past it has been something out of the ordinary like abseiling off a water tower or white water rafting. This year as a joke, it was suggested to do something “safe” like knitting. And so the idea for the Great St Mary’s Big Knit was born. The sponsored Big Knit started in March and to keep it an extraordinary project, it was decided to knit a scarf long enough to go round the church! The project has been supported by over 60 knitters from the Town as well as the generous support of local traders, the whole cast of Made in Dagenham and even the captain of the cruise ship Arcadia.

LOCALs that Sawbridgeworth’s newest shop will be opening its doors on Thursday 27th August. Neville Twitchell, is busy putting the finishing touches to his Bookshop Sawbridge words and looking forward to meeting his first customers... When did you decide to open your own bookshop? I began formulating my ideas for a new bookshop a few months ago and started looking around for suitable premises. The shop in Bell Street seemed absolutely ideal. I couldn’t believe my luck in finding it. How did you decide on your company name? Sawbridge Words. I played around with lots of ideas for a shop name, but I couldn’t come up with anything better. It seemed a bit cheesy at first but most of the people I punted it to seemed to like it, so I have stuck with it. Where did you qualify/study? I have a long and checkered academic history culminating in a PhD in British political history from London Metropolitan University. I published a book based on my researches, “The Politics of the Rope: the Campaign to Abolish Capital Punishment in Britain, 1955-1969” (pub. by Arrow, 2012), available from all good bookshops, including mine! (Actually this whole project is just an elaborate device to try to boost the sales of my book). What’s your experience in the business? I have worked for and/or managed several bookshops/ game shops. They were all chess/board game/ card game themed businesses, with some emphasis on the boards and chess sets, software and computers. Chess is my passion, and I will doubtless be stocking some chess literature and books on games in general.

I was having to vindicate other peoples’ often faulty (and sometimes crazy) ideas of how things should be run. I decided the only way to do things the way I thought they should be done was for me to found my own business. At last I can do it my way! What has been the most challenging aspect so far? It is very early days, so I can’t really say. I have no idea how much custom I will get in the weeks and months ahead, or how easy it will be to turn a profit, but I can say I am looking forward to the challenge with a measure of optimism. What has been the most rewarding aspect? Being able to do what I want to do work-wise for the first time in my life. Are you the only employee? At present yes, though if I get busy, as I sincerely hope, then I may take on a couple of people to help me out in the shop. Do you hope to expand your business? I hope that the business will grow of course by attracting an ever greater volume of custom, and I am hoping that the shop will become an ever more popular focal point in the town particularly by hosting a series of events, such as talks, readings, book signings and so on. I have a few potential guest authors and lecturers lined up. I am hoping to entice a celebrity author for a “Grand Opening” at some point in the near future.

What work did you do before setting up the business? Over the last few years I have been working for William Hill, the bookmakers, in several of their shops in the area. Thus I have gone from bookmaker to bookseller!

How should potential customers contact you? You can look in at the shop at 47 Bell St. Please! But because things are still in the germinating stages I haven’t yet been given a phone number for the shop and the website has yet to be set up, but will probably be www.sawbridgewords.com.

What made you decide to set up your own business? I was becoming more and more frustrated at working at businesses and jobs where

Anything else you’d like to add? Welcome to Sawbridge Words. Buy lots of books there and enjoy our tea and coffee!

centenary the WI turns 100 By Alison Runham, www.alison.runham.co.uk

This month marks one hundred years since the first UK Women’s Institute (WI) meeting. As the WI celebrates its centenary, we look at its history and its role today. A Slow Start As the twentieth century began, few branches of the new AOS (Agricultural Organisation Society) welcomed women, and female attendees were often too afraid of ridicule to speak. Yet in Canada, the Farmer’s Institutes had inspired women to found WIs to share knowledge on farming and raising a family. The movement spread throughout Canada and to the USA, Poland and Belgium. However, in the UK, WIs weren’t established until the arrival of Madge Watt, a founder member of British Columbia’s first WI. Her speech about the vital contribution women could make to the war effort through working the land to grow food helped persuade the AOS to appoint her as founder of WIs in the UK. WIs would provide a hub for sharing knowledge about agriculture and home industries, and for social activities, but would initially focus on increasing food production to counter WW1 shortages. The first UK WI meeting was held on 16th September 1915 in Llanfair PG, and by 1918 there were 99 WIs. Soon the WI became independent from the Board of Agriculture; the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) was formed in October 1917 and began publishing its Home and Country magazine in 1919. With WW1 over, the WI urged members to become active citizens and stand for election at local and parliamentary level. In 1921 WI member Mrs Margaret Winteringham became the first English born female MP and the second woman in Parliament. By 1924, when Jerusalem was adopted as the WI song, there were 3,223 WIs.

24

World War Two to Diamond Jubilee The WI had continued to support the League of Nations, and was preparing for war once again. Lady Denman, the WI chair, became Director of the Women’s Land Army in 1938 and WI Preservation Centres played a vital role, canning produce and making jam to turn over 5,300 tons of potential waste into food for the nation. Meanwhile, the NWFI’s 1941 report on evacuees, Town Children through Country Eyes, stimulated debate about families that ultimately resulted in the family allowances after the war. Queen Mary had become President of the Sandringham WI in 1919, and in 1943 her daughter Elizabeth joined the WI too. In 1945, the WI founded Denman College. With the war over, the WI spread its wings, beginning the fifties with a national music festival. Members also designed a house ideal for a working family for the Ideal home Exhibition (including a porch for muddy boots). 1965 was a significant year. The rule prohibiting the founding of WIs in places with populations over 4,000 was abolished, and representatives from 8,700 WIs celebrated the WI’s Golden Jubilee at a special garden party at Buckingham Palace. WIs also compiled Scrapbooks of the Countryside, now held in Local Record Office archives. The sixties ended with performances of The Brilliant and the Dark, an NFWI-commissioned musical following women’s lives throughout the centuries. In 1974 the number of WIs reached an all-

celebrations time high of 9,309, just in time to celebrate the institution’s Diamond Jubilee in 1975. At the AGM that year, the NFWI confirmed its belief in ‘the principle of equality of opportunity and of legal status for men and women’ and pledged it would continue to work towards it. A Thoroughly Modern Institution In the 1980s, the WI made its first appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show and launched a three year campaign to raise the profile of the WI, culminating in the WI Life and Leisure Exhibition at Olympia in 1984, opened by the Queen. There was a growing awareness of modern technology and current concerns as the WI moved into the 1990s and it campaigned with partners on several issues, including a project to promote sport as part of a healthy lifestyle. Significantly, in 1999 the WI joined with the National Farmers’ Union to hold A Women in Farming conference, with an address given by The Princess Royal,

but perhaps what most overthrew its ‘jam and Jerusalem image’ was the widely reported response of many members to the Prime Minister’s address at their Triennial General Meeting in 2000. Feeling his speech was becoming a party political broadcast, they rewarded him with a slow handclap. However, the WI is still just as committed to preserving traditional skills as it is to addressing the issues of the day, as demonstrated by their Craft Spectacular exhibition in 2000. Today, the WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, with 212,000 members and 6,600 WIs. It still strives to provide women with educational opportunities and campaigns on issues that affect all women and their communities, from equal pay and better midwifery to climate change and the plight of the honey bee, and over the last 100 years it has effected genuine change. So happy birthday, WI; thank you for all you have done, and long may you continue.
