THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe november edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION Who else thinks that the year is now freewheeling to its end? I don’t know if it’s due to the nature of my work (I’m always planning at least 2-3 months ahead) but it feels that once bonfire night is over, Christmas will be upon us. I blame the shops for starting to display their Halloween and Christmas products back in the summer. It was quite discreet at first wasn’t it, tucked away in the least visited corners... and now it’s BAM! Christmas sweets and treats everywhere!

CONNECTION november ISSUE 13

CONTENTS ■ FEATURES & ARTICLES 8 Great St Mary’s Grand Christmas Fair

I love it though. I love the onset of the new seasons and the opportunities to celebrate that each of them brings. With winter heading our way and Christmas just round the corner, we’ll start to pack away our gardens and prepare our homes. Stock up on food and drink and look forward to nights snuggled with our loved ones... Stop. Who am I trying to kid! The reality for most of us is quite different isn’t it? Rush, rush, rushing as apposed to chill, chill, chilling!

The Happiness Program Comes to SAWbridgeworth Introduced by Life Inside out

Come along and join your local club, meet new friends, discuss new topics each month, and help make the world a brighter place. What is the purpose of Happiness Clubs? 1. After you have joined the program and chosen the Club closest to you, Happiness Clubs can be looked at as the platforms where you can meet those who are also taking the 10-month Happiness Program course. At the club meetings, you can share your experiences or ask your questions and even become part of a wonderful community of like-minded individuals in the process. 2. Another important purpose of these meetings is preparation. We prepare for the following month’s topic in line with the fixed References that are introduced by the Club Leader every month. The Club Leaders are not trained coaches of the 10-month program, but they rather serve as volunteers at the World Is Better With You Foundation and are also participants of the Happiness Program. Their fantastic work will help you become a happier person by the end of the course. The Club Leaders organize the meetings and motivate you with their presence to accomplish the course.

Fawbert & Barnard Exhibition The tudor house Gallery exhibits school artwork The Fawbert and Barnard Infants’ School in Sawbridgeworth had an arts day in October and two students from each class were chosen to have their art work exhibited at the Tudor House Gallery. The artworks were framed and exhibited courtesy of the Gallery. The children, aged between 3 and 6, were over the moon with having their work exhibited and their parents were very proud to attend a private viewing. The reaction to the exhibition from students, parents and visitors to the gallery has been amazing and it is hoped that this will be the start of further collaborations.

Sawbridgeworth Town Projects

World War I exhibition & replica trench

Sawbridgeworth Town Council in collaboration with Herts At War (www.hertsatwar.co.uk) are proud to announce that an exhibition of World War 1 is now available to view at the Town Council offices in Sayesbury Manor, Bell Street. Please see the dates below for days on which the exhibition is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays between the hours of 10am and 4pm. We are actively encouraging groups to visit and we can arrange a talk from our Herts At War historian Mr Dan Hill, if you wish to arrange a group visit then please email jo.sargant@ sawbridgeworth-tc.gov.uk for more information, appointments for schools and groups are being arranged for Thursdays, but there could be scope for alternative days on request.

the exhibition as well as the project conducting outreach for thousands of schoolchildren throughout the county. The exhibition features a range of collections including many that have been newly discovered and which are of national significance that have been featured in the written press and on television in the last year. Dan Hill, project officer for Herts at War said:

The exhibition will form a showcase of artefacts, photographs, a full scale trench and information detailing the story of both the county of Hertfordshire and the town of Sawbridgeworth during the Great War. Community Project Herts at War was granted £99,000 in 2014 to lead a commemorative project in various locations throughout the county, with the ultimate aim being to educate the residents of Hertfordshire about the county’s diverse wartime history. The Herts at War exhibition was launched in August 2014 and spent one year in Letchworth Garden City where over 10,000 people visited

And Herts at War “We are delighted to announce the launch of the second phase of the Herts at War Project in Sawbridgeworth. Over the last year we have been amazed by the support offered by Hertfordshire’s residents and we have been very proud to be able to share the story with those residents of North Hertfordshire. In working with such a dedicated team as those at Sawbridgeworth town council we are delighted to be able to help share the story of Sawbridgeworth and the surrounding area.

Hertfordshire as a county had an incredibly diverse wartime record; Belgian Refugees, Conscientious Objectors, Zeppelin Raids, German Prisoner of War Camps, Armaments factories and dozens of Hospitals for wounded soldiers are just some of the things that could be found in the county. This exhibition has been designed to reflect these important issues as well as placing a local focus on those men from the area who went to war in 1914, many never to return.

IT’s your community

We would like to appeal to members of the public to come and visit the exhibition and speak with our team. Our historians regularly conduct research into our visitor’ own family histories and are able to piece together the story of a loved one that in some cases has been forgotten for 100 years. As a community project we of course welcome any information or contributions from the public. We are a non-profit organisation dedicated to sharing our county’s history and are proud to say that the exhibition, research and historical information is all entirely free.” The Herts at War exhibition can be viewed at Sayesbury Manor Cottage, Bell St, Sawbridgeworth CM21 9AN until 31st December 2015. Opening days are – Thursday by appointment, Friday 10-4 and Saturday 10-4.

A FILLING LUNCH OR SUPPER.

1. Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then add the diced vegetables and cover and cook gently for 5 minutes. 2. Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes. 3. Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (in batches if necessary) and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock. 4. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps and crushed coriander seeds. TIP: To make the parsnip crisps, use a potato peeler to shave long thin strips from one large peeled parsnip. Half fill a large deep frying pan with vegetable oil and heat until a cube of bread dropped in the hot oil browns in 30 seconds. Fry the strips of parsnip in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well on kitchen paper.

The launch of Sawbo’s own Jazz club nights saw Helen Keating Band entertain over 80 people! She was backed by her capable trio, playing all American songbook numbers from 8 - 11pm giving a full evening’s of delectable jazz pleasure. Peter Lee, the chairman of SMHT described it as one of the best nights in the Memorial Hall in the last few years. Next month’s session has already been booked for November the 20th at 8pm. The Club will be hosting Carol Braithwaite and her band. Carol is a regular singer on the Essex Jazz scene and we are delighted with her daring to come across the border into Herts to entertain the new SMHT Club. The Club is busy lining up the Chris Eldred Trio, for the new year, Chris is a Herts based young Jazz musician of the year who studied at Trinity College Cambridge and has played at many top clubs, been on the BBC.
