THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe December edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION Early days I know, but are you ready for Christmas? I started my planning back in October. Before you groan, I have a very good reason for this. Having published magazines for over 10 years now, I have learned that working flat out producing the New Year editions AND trying to do my Christmas shopping, whilst attending various concerts, plays and shows adds stress to what already is a stressful time of year! Although I have only bought a few prezzies so far, I know exactly what I will be buying and where from, which means I can have a little more time to stop and enjoy this wonderful time of year (smiles and sighs with relief!).

we asked our local ministers… what’s your favourite Christmas carol and why?

Frances Arnold

Gary Hanson

parish church of Great St Mary, Sawbridgeworth

Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church

‘It Came Upon the Midnight Clear’ (1849) Edmund Sears Jesus Christ isn’t explicitly mentioned in this beautiful carol, but we know that it is on the night of his birth that the angels bring the message of peace to ‘all the weary world’. The third verse takes my breath away each Christmas: ‘…beneath the angel-strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and man, at war with man, hears not the lovesong which they bring…’ This poem with its rich, archaic language, takes us to a place where we can hear: a clear, dark night, when the angels in heaven have come close to us on earth. All we have to do is hush the noise of warfare and listen. When I come out of the main door of Great St Mary’s onto the grassy slopes of the churchyard after the midnight service on Christmas Eve, the heavenly music seems close. The pastor Edmund Sears wrote the carol in Massachusetts in response to turbulent times in mid nineteenth century America; and it still speaks to us today as we sing it to music adapted by Arthur Sullivan from an English traditional melody. The remaining verses encourage us to receive the comfort that listening to the message will bring and they hold before us the glorious vision of the earth itself reflecting back the song to the angels, because it has at last embraced the message of peace.

6

My favourite is ‘Silent Night’. My wife and I had it in our, December, wedding, so it is special to us. Last year I organised a charity football match in memory of the famous Christmas Day truce of 1914 and with help from the Air Cadet band and Diverse Performing Arts, the crowd of 300 spectators sang it. However, the main reason it is my favourite, is that this carol carries a great message... It rings out ‘silent night, holy night’... but the world Jesus was born into, was anything but, there was injustice, poverty and oppression. The message of the carol is that where the Son of God was, was peace. That remains true today, when we enter the presence of God we can know peace. The carol reminds me of who Jesus is, namely the Son of God, ‘love’s pure light’, the holy one. That Jesus didn’t enter this world as simply a good teacher, or nice guy, but Lord and God. The third verse, tells the moment when the Shepherds were visited by the Angels with their amazing message, that this baby was and is the Saviour. So it is my favourite carol because of my own memories, and because it is great to sing, but above all that, because it reminds me that the baby in the manger is my Saviour, my King, my hope and my deliverer and that gives me more joy than any present received at any Christmas, or at any time!

Town Twinning association inaugural visit to moosburg By David Royle

A party of 18 people from Sawbridgeworth, including town mayor Eric Buckmaster, visited Moosburg, near Munich over the October 16-18 weekend. Moosburg already has an exchange programme with Sawbridgeworth’s French twin town, Bry sur Marne. On arrival the group visited Moosburg’s new reception suite, the main church and town museum. On Saturday visitors and hosts went by coach to the iconic Neuschwanstein castle, lunching en route on beer, white sausages and pretzels at a restaurant in a national equestrian centre. Dinner on the way home was at the oldest brewery in the world in Freising. Sunday morning was spent with host families before the 90 minute flight back to Stansted. It is anticipated that this twinning arrangement will be formalised in the next few weeks and that a party from Moosburg will visit Sawbridgeworth in October 2016.

Take away quiz Christmas Charity Quiz For Sale What is it? A take away quiz is now on sale. It is on the theme of mammals and is called the ‘All Creatures Great and Small Quiz Part II’. The questions require no factual knowledge at all about mammals and to help you, we even provide a list of all the possible answers! Most of the questions are cryptic clues or anagrams although some are (relatively!) straight forward. However the answer to each one is the name of a mammal so all you will have to do is match the name to the clue. The closing date for the quiz is not until Monday 1st February 2016, so it is the ideal thing to do with your family and friends over Christmas and the New Year. You could also use copies as Christmas presents – they would make unusual, cheap and hopefully interesting stocking fillers. What is it in aid of? All profits from the quiz will be sent to the Mildmay

Mission Hospital and, in particular, its work supporting children in Uganda who have HIV/Aids. (Last year’s quiz raised £1469.76 for this project.) Where can I get a copy? Copies of the quiz are on sale at £2 and are available from: Nisa (formerly The Tuck Shop), Bell Street, Sawbridgeworth, OR Steve and Pam Robertson, 10 Bell Mead, Sawbridgeworth, Herts CM21 9ES. RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING MARMALADE & MUSTARD GLAZED GAMMON 2.5kg smoked gammon joint 1 onion, peeled and quartered 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped 2 fresh bay leaves, plus extra to garnish Few black peppercorns 1 tbsp whole cloves 3 tbsp shredless orange marmalade, warmed 2 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 3 tbsp light soft brown sugar Orange wedges, to garnish

GLAZED GAMMON IS A CHRISTMAS FAVOURITE – DELICIOUS HOT FROM THE OVEN AS A FESTIVE SUPPER OR SERVED COLD AS PART OF THE

BOXING DAY OR NEW YEAR BUFFET!

1. Place the gammon joint in a large deep pan with the onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns. Pour over enough cold water to cover the joint. 2. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface using a slotted spoon. Reduce the heat, cover and leave to simmer for 1½ hours, topping up the water level as needed. 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Lift out the gammon from the pan and place in a foil-lined roasting tin (discard the cooking liquid). Leave to cool for 10 minutes. Cut away the skin from the gammon, leaving a thin layer of fat and score the fat into diamonds. Stud the scored fat with the cloves in an even pattern. 4. Mix together the marmalade, honey, mustard and sugar and spoon all over the gammon fat. Roast in the oven for 40-45 minutes, basting regularly with the glaze and pan juices until the fat is golden. Serve hot or cold garnished with fresh bay leaves and orange wedges.

TIP: Add 1 tsp each ground cumin and ground coriander or a splash of Tabasco sauce to the glaze for a bit of extra spice, if liked.

Trading Standards Happy Shopping during Christmas & New Year Trading Standards advice for happy shopping leading up to the holiday period is to just remember CHRISTMAS.

C is for Counterfeits - don’t buy them! They can be dangerous, are poor quality and the person you are buying for will be disappointed

H is for Hallmark - a mark to look for on Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium articles to prove the quality of the metal. If there is no hallmark, the item may not be made of the precious metal you wanted.

R is for Receipts - keep them. If you find out that the items you have purchased are faulty you will need proof of purchase when you go back to the shop.

I is for Increasing your protection - when you buy expensive goods. If you buy goods over £100 it can be useful to use your credit card – that way if the company goes bust or the trader won’t help you with a problem you can go to your credit card company for help. S is for Safe goods - look for the CE Mark on things like toys and electrical goods – this is the symbol used to show the goods have met the required safety standards.

T is for time to change your mind - you now have 14 days to change your mind about many goods

you buy on-line, so order in good time and you will still have the chance to send them back and order something else if you don’t like what you receive.

M is for manufacturer’s warranty - some goods come with a manufacturer’s warranty which you can use if the goods become faulty so keep hold of them. Remember though that your contract is with the shop where the goods were purchased so you can still go back to the seller even if you do have a warranty. A is for advice - if you need pre-shopping advice (or help after Christmas) call Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 040506. S is for scams - Christmas is an expensive time of year and a letter telling you that you have won a lottery may seem like a gift. Just remember, if you have not bought a ticket how can you be a winner? As with all scams, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!

CENTRAL SURGERY SAWBRIDGEWORTH SELF CARE WEEK: MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR NHS Central Surgery wants to remind you about why it’s important to choose well when accessing local health services, so that everyone can get the best out of the NHS. There might even be something you can do for yourself first, especially when it comes to minor ailments or injuries such as, colic, flu, sprains or strains. The NHS constitution, which is the NHS handbook, says ‘please recognise you can make a significant contribution to your own and your family’s good health and wellbeing and take responsibility for it.’ It is important, therefore, that people understand what they can first do for themselves before accessing health services. “Most people are very capable of looking after themselves most of the time, selftreating when it’s safe and knowing where and when to seek help when they need it. However, there are 3.7m visits to A&E for self-treatable conditions such as flu, colic and sprains which adds to pressure in the health system. “Before you visit A&E, remember what it’s there for. It provides vital care for life threatening emergencies, such as loss of consciousness, suspected heart attacks, breathing difficulties, or severe bleeding that cannot be stopped. “If you have a cold, flu or sore throat, ask yourself, do I want to spend 4 hours in A&E or should I call NHS 111, look-up NHS Choices or could I ask the pharmacist first?” Invest in your NHS, and your health, practice Self Care for Life. www.selfcareforum.org/fact-sheets/ www.treatyourselfbetter.co.uk/ Bell Street Sawbridgeworth Herts CM2 19AQ Tel: 01279 603180
