THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe New Year edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION I hope you had a smashing Christmas and are all ready for the year ahead. I am excited about new possibilities and full of optimism that this year will be the year that I drop a dress size (or two!), finally overcome my fear of exercise, start that new project that I’ve been putting off for the past two years, become the perfect wife, mother, friend and... Hold on, hold on! Who am I trying to kid! I think this year I’m going to keep it simple and resolve to be kinder - to myself and others. Job done. I have a plea. This year I’m really keen to involve our local schools within the magazine. Wouldn’t it be nice to find out a little more about them? Henry Moore Primary School in Harlow has been contributing to our sister publication (CM17) for over 8 years now. Parents have told me they love to see what the school is up to, photos of their children or their children’s schoolwork. Apparently, it’s quite an ‘achievement’ to have their work included. Their proud parents even save the articles for their child’s “memory box”.

ch accountancy award win for essex entrepreneur CH Accountancy was founded in January 2014 by expert accountant Cheryl Jarrett, providing essential accountancy and taxation services to individuals, owner-managed businesses and small/ medium-sized companies with a turnover of up to £2m. For most businesses and individuals the world of accountancy and taxation can be a minefield and often larger accountancy practices are unable to spend the time needed offering guidance and support to their customers. Cheryl formed CH Accountancy to offer a bespoke and personalised accounting service to businesses and individuals who prefer to work on a 121 basis. Appreciating how family life and business, especially for working mums, can be hard to juggle at times, Cheryl has developed a family friendly service and works with her clients inside or outside of school hours. After being nominated for the 2016 Global Accountancy Awards, Cheryl has just announced that she has been named Accountant of the Year – Essex. The 2016 Global Accountancy Awards highlight the vital work done throughout all industries and sectors by the behind-the-scenes experts who ensure that every firm, regardless of size, reputation, geographical location or area of expertise can be confident that the figures that make it tick are in safe hands. Cheryl told us “I am so thrilled to know that all my hard work in providing the best service in accountancy hasn’t gone unrecognised by my wonderful clients and colleagues”.

These awards are brought to the corporate and finance industry by UK-based publisher, AI Global Media, which was launched over five years ago and has become the publication of choice for more than 108,000 subscribers in over 170 countries. It often includes editorial submissions from some of the biggest players on the global corporate landscape, including KPMG, EY, PwC and Deloitte. Honoured to be in the company of such powerful financial global leaders, this accolade is a true reflection of the commitment and customer excellence CH Accountancy brings to its clients and how Cheryl has built a strong and successful business and brand. Every CH Accountancy client receives the highest level of expert, hassle-free and affordable service and with an impressive, fast-growing client base throughout Essex, Hertfordshire, London and beyond, it’s easy to see why CH Accountancy is an award winning business.

Pub & café Walks

Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Frost in the Forest Stroll through ancient, deer-filled Hatfield Forest and then warm up with coffee or mulled wine by the lake. Really cold days turn the lakes to ice, fringe trees with frost and freeze the forest tracks that can otherwise be impossibly muddy. Start with your back to the National Trust café. Turn left through car park and right along tarmac track. Immediately after gravel drive with “No Vehicular Access” sign, take path on left of road. Follow yellow-topped marker posts across open country towards trees and walk, through some bushes, to one end of a broad woodland ride. Turn left along this to the end and eventually right along edge of forest. Turn left though wooden gate by buildings and go on between beech hedges. Turn left along edge of field, left again over footbridge and then right on path beside lake. Keep going in this general direction, along small path and then track, to emerge near picturesque Street Farm Cottage, with thatched roof and diamond-leaded windows. Turn left along lane and keep straight on along tree-lined track, following it left. Go through wooden gate back into Hatfield Forest and walk straight ahead. Keep Forest Lodge on left and pine trees on right and follow winding gravel track, which bends left through open area. After about 200m, turn right along wide, grassy path to return to café. local business people in person Name and Business Carole Rose and I run Cookies Cooking School. Where do you live? Great Dunmow. What’s your favourite shop in Sawbridgeworth? I love unusual shops, so really enjoy The Tudor House Gallery and also the Green Room. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? It’s sense of community and history. What do you like doing when you’re not working? When I am not working I am running, cycling, reading or believe it or not cooking! I set up my business because... I want to pass on my passion for cooking and to make people realise that it can be fun not a chore.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I organised a charity bike ride for Chelmsford Mencap. We cycled off road from Dunmow to Heybridge Basin (50 mile return trip), we had 18 riders and raised nearly £3,000. It was such a good day we are definitely going to do again! What are your plans for 2016? It’s going to be a massive year for Cookies Cooking School with a book launch and franchising in the Spring! I am so excited! What makes you smile? I Love working with my Mencap students, when asking what fruit we need to make Blueberry Muffins I’m told ‘Oranges!’ They make my week!

Poppy Appeal raffle winner The tudor house Gallery raises much needed funds for the poppy appeal

A woman from Bishop’s Stortford whose great-uncle was killed in the trenches, says she is honoured to have won a charity raffle held on behalf of the Royal British Legion. Susan Couzens, a fine art student from Chantry Road, won an exquisite display of three ceramic poppies on a stand, after entering the raffle held at the Tudor House Gallery in Sawbridgeworth. “My great-uncle was only 19 when he died in the battlefields of France during the First World War,” says Mrs Couzens, who is studying at Herts Regional College. “I remember as child being shown the telegram announcing his death, and it had a huge effect on me. “I have supported the poppy appeal ever since, and I believe it is now more relevant than ever, because of all the conflict in the world.” The poppies were handmade by Harlow artist Amanda Westbury, whose work is

often sold at the Tudor House Gallery, which raised £150 for the poppy appeal. Andrew Passfield, who has been the district’s poppy appeal coordinator for the past 20 years, said: “It is fantastic when local businesses get involved in the fundraising. “This year, as a community, we have raised £9,300 which will go towards supporting ex-service men and women and their families. “As we all know, there is a shortfall in funding nationwide, which is why the Poppy Appeal is so important. It will help to fund various projects, including the Battle Back programme which uses adaptive sport and adventure training to help wounded and sick veterans to get their confidence back.”

Sawbridgeworth crafters

From Lacemaking to crafting By Sheila Brown

Seeking a way to meet people when we moved to Sawbo’ in 1976 I thought about attending evening classes or joining the W.I. But having been a knitter/embroidress for as long as I can remember, lacemaking seemed the path to take. The history of lacemaking is extra- ordinary. Not just the making of it, but how the history of our country is bound up with it. It was one of the first handmade trades to be mechanised at the beginning of the 18th century. These led to vast changes and made lace available to everyone not just the rich. Machine lace is beautiful, can be made quickly and is less expensive than handmade, although today’s creations incorporating beading etc are beautiful and expensive. Handmade lace is still made for the future family heirlooms- weddings etc.

when:

Every Wednesday, 7.30-9.30pm

The Hailey Centre

Tel:

01279 725563

Lace, of course, is a worldwide craft, having spread from Britain and Europe across the wide world as it became cheaper to be made in the ‘Colonies’ both British and French. Every other year lacemakers from around the world meet for a week in a host country - in 2016 it will be Slovenia, where there will be exhibitions, talks, classes and visits for those attending. If you would like to come and join us and learn a new skill we will lend people the equipment they need before outlays for are made. Sawbridgeworth Crafters meet every Wednesday at the Hailey Centre from 7.30-9.30pm. We make lace, we craft, we drink tea & coffee, eat cake and socialise.

1. Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. 2. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. 3. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

TIP: For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!

LOCAL CHARITIES Hertfordshire Alzheimer’s Society By Gayl Staines, Operations Manager

If you have a small local charity, non-funded or not-for-profit organisation you feel deserves some exposure contact us and we’ll see what we can do.

We all need to be dementia aware... Like many medical conditions, there are a number of commonly held misunderstandings around dementia. There over 14,000 people with the condition in Hertfordshire and that number continues to rise so we think it is essential that everyone learns more about the condition. A common misunderstanding is that dementia only affects older people and is a natural part of aging. In fact, dementia affects many people under 65 and is caused by diseases of the brain. Also, there are things that we can all do to dramatically reduce our risk of developing the condition – such as exercising regularly, not smoking and not drinking heavily. Many people don’t realise that whilst there is not yet a cure for dementia, many of the symptoms that can accompany the condition can be treated. Alzheimer’s Society invests millions of pounds into research every year which helps develop news ways to make life more manageable and enjoyable for people living with dementia. Of course, much of this support is only available to those people who have been formally diagnosed with dementia so that they can be pointed in the right direction. We estimate that there are thousands of people in Hertfordshire who have dementia but don’t have a diagnosis. If you are worried about your memory – or perhaps you are worried about a family member or friend – then the first step is to speak to your GP or to Alzheimer’s Society. Occasional forgetfulness or confusion is something that we all experience but we encourage people to seek advice when it starts

to interfere with daily life. For example, we all lose the car keys from time to time, but if you find that are frequently forgetting recent events, appointments and people’s names then it is important to get it checked out. Other symptoms might include mood swings or frustration at memory loss. It’s important to realise that a diagnosis of dementia is not something that you need to deal with alone. Alzheimer’s Society offers a range of local support such as Dementia Cafes, Singing for the Brain groups and Dementia Support Workers who can offer information to people with the condition, carers and professionals. For more information please call our local office on 01279 508448. You can also find more information on what to do if you are worried about your memory by calling our national helpline on 0300 222 11 22 or by visiting www.alzheimers.org.uk/memoryworry
