THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe February edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION I’m continuing my New Year “mission” - well, my two missions! The first is business - I’ve enrolled on several training programmes and have to say I’m really enjoying them! I sound surprised don’t I! Well, I haven’t done anything like this in years and am happy to report that a change is, most definitely, as good as a rest! The second, which to me is by far the most important, is cracking that little nugget of “the work/life” balance. Oh yes! I am happy to report that I am chip, chip, chipping away at it and have already organised time with my loved ones up until April and by the time you read this I will be busily planning the rest of the year. I should just add that this has been helped enormously by having a January birthday and receiving, wait for it: tickets to see Adele (pinch me!), a bread making course - getting to spend the day with a friend elbow deep in dough (oh yes!) and the cherry tickets to see The War of the Worlds - War of the worlds!! (I am beyond excited!) You’ve probably gathered I am a bit new at being organised and a tad excited by it all too - it’s been a revelation! I always thought that planning to see friends and family was well, a bit “organised” I’ve tended to be spontaneous and leave everything to the last minute, often with disastrous results. Not any more. It’s far more exciting having things to look forward to. I highly recommend it. And if YOU or your organisation has plans in the coming year, don’t forget to tell me about them - especially if you’d like me to help spread the word via the magazine. The copy deadline is always 10th of the preceding month, so you may need a little forward planning but I’m happy to help in any way I can.

Until next month,

Lorraine

PS I’m still really keen to hear from our local schools, do get in touch!

mind in west essex Helping local families to be happier By Barbara Scoltock

I work for Mind in West Essex, running their family therapy service. My colleague Susie and I have been lucky enough to work with families from the local area for many years. Susie and I met when we first trained as counsellors, and later we both completed a Systemic Family Therapy course at St George’s University Hospital in South London. Recently our small team has been boosted by the arrival of Julie who has lots of experience working with schools in Hertfordshire. We encourage as many family members as possible to attend therapy. It helps to build up the bigger picture. We have had eight family members from three generations in a room with two therapists. Although usually we work with smaller family units. We always provide two therapists. One will take the lead role and do all the talking. The second therapist is there to listen, observe and also to help comfort anyone who becomes distressed. This helps to give a more

balanced view when we come to discuss what families are telling us. It also helps us navigate how we will approach future sessions in a positive way, steering families towards more harmonious relationships with one another. Family therapy lasts up to 90 minutes per session. It can be an intense hour and a half. Sessions can be frustrating, insightful, touching, funny or sad. Often they are a mixture of all these things. But most of our clients find it very rewarding when we get deeper into the issues that trouble them and start looking at how to improve things. We are delighted when people give us feedback saying that things are getting better as a result of the therapy they have received. This is the most rewarding feeling in the world and one of the main reasons for doing the job. If you would like to know more about Family Therapy please contact Barbara.

the national childbirth trust the uk’s largest charity for parents

NCT Branches are your local parent support network, helping you become the parent you want to be. We know how important it is for parents to find the information they need to prepare for their new life. That’s why we offer a range of courses to support you through your transition. In the Bishop’s Stortford/Sawbridgeworth branch we have a variety of activities and events to support the local community including: first aid training, sling library meet ups, nearly new sales (next one is 12th of March), monthly events, breastfeeding support and pre and postnatal classes. One of the key campaigns that NCT are involved in is #BeyondBabyBlues. NCT’s latest research reveals that almost one in five callers to our helpline had a mental health issue to discuss and over 35% had not spoken to a healthcare professional about it. With this in mind we will be doing more pop up style events so that we can engage more with local parents and carers, whether it be a baby café style meet up, new parent coffee group, buggy walk or parents night out, it is important to note that even if you are not a member of NCT most of our events are open to all (we will of course have some members only events too).

We publish a quarterly newsletter for our members. We are always on the lookout for articles – birth stories, what parenting is like for you, your baby’s favourite recipe and would also love to hear from you if you would like your baby’s birth announced. If you have a business and would be interested in being an advertiser, we have a variety of rates and options available. Please contact us on nctnewsletterbss@yahoo.co.uk We would love to hear from you if you would like to volunteer. Perhaps you might like to be Branch Secretary, be part of the NNS Team or the Events Team. Perhaps you might like to help making links with health professionals or even host a coffee morning. The list of opportunities is endless, and you can devote as much or little time as you want! If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please feel free to contact bishopsstortford@nct.org.uk Until next time… Sanchia Aronberg Branch Chair

local business people in person Name and Business Norma Fenwick, Your Perfect Travel Ltd. Where do you live? I grew up in Harlow and moved to Sawbridgeworth about 10 years ago now. I love living and working in Sawbridgeworth. What’s your favourite local venue? It’s difficult to choose one! Goose Fat & Garlic for cocktails and/or a gorgeous meal. What’s your favourite local shop? It has to be The Green Room. I often pop in there when I want inspiration for a present, card or for a little treat for me. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? The peace and quiet, yet easy to get to the shops, bars, restaurants in Sawbridgeworth, as well as a short distance to Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford.

What do you like doing when you’re not working? Travel to new destinations, play the piano, read and now keep fit. I set up my business because... I love to travel and I wanted to help other people plan their travel and use my experience and knowledge. It also means I get to travel a whole lot more to check out destinations and resorts. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I got engaged on 3rd January. My now fiancé Andrew proposed to me on a recent holiday to Myanmar (Burma). Fancy a walk?

Bishop’s Stortford & District Footpaths Association By Daphne Wallace-Jarvis for BSDFA

Walks for February and March Weather... Sometimes rain is unavoidable, and in February please check out the weather forecast before you leave your house and dress appropriately. The Bishop’s Stortford and District Footpaths Assn. walk Leaders will try and take the best route in consideration of the circumstances on the day. However, there are times when there is no alternative other than having to splosh through the mud. The Essex Herts borders is an arable area with vast quantities of clay soil which in the wet will be sticky, slippery and heavy. It is not an area for climbing magnificent hills but yes, this clay together with its arable fields has some ‘good little bumps’ which when achieved on a good clear day, you can see for miles. February, in this part of England, can quite often display brilliant sunshine and the most beautiful deep blue skies. It is equally true that on a poor old misty day, some certain amount of imagination is required - the odd bird will still decide to sing; there can be the noise from road traffic; a church bell may toll.

And what next? Well it would be wishful thinking to imagine that the second half of a BSDFA Sunday walk is always downhill and back to the pub, but having said that, the steps along the return journey always seem to pass more swiftly. Arriving back at the start point, yes! You have just completed 5-6 miles - who else has achieved that today? Ramblers notes: Thorley footbridge (FP12) has been repaired; the Twyford Railway Crossing remains to be determined; Don’t forget to inform the Secretary of any other issues concerning our Rights of Way (ROW). Sunday 7 Feb, Prince of Wales, Green Tye, GR: TL443183, SatNav: SG10 6JP Sunday 21 Feb, Albury Village Hall, Clapgate, GR: TL442248, SatNav: SG11 2JD Sunday 6 Mar, Eastwick War Memorial, GR: TL434117, SatNav: CM20 2QY Sunday 20 Mar, Furneux Pelham Church, G/Ref: TL432279, SatNav: SG9 0LH

At the half-way point, it’s great to stop and rummage for a coffee, soak up the fresh air and watch the spirals of warm breath willowing from the group as little puffs stream into a crisp morning air. It is grand to stand and stare, to be warm, care-free and know that the half-way point has been achieved.

#fosterin

Fostering February is a campaign aiming to raise awareness about what foster caring involves, alongside dispelling some of the myths and misconceptions which surrounds it. No matter where you are in the country, there is someone near you making a difference to children and young people’s lives by offering them the love and everyday human needs they deserve- things which most of us take for granted. So why couldn’t it be you? Fostering February is all about learning more about the facts and becoming properly informed on how to become a foster carer; for example, did you know you don’t need to own your own home or be married to become a carer? If you are thinking about life as a foster carer, the campaign takes time to answer your questions, and pushes to find out if you could make an amazing difference on a young person’s passage to adulthood. If you think you could make a difference, come along to our information events throughout the month and ‘Talk To Us’ https://www.facebook.com/fosteringfebruary

live laugh love Foundation the buddy bag appeal Imagine if your whole world changed in a day. Imagine having to leave everything you own and everyone you know.

A matter of fact • You may be shocked to learn that 48,000 children require emergency accommodation in the UK each year. • Children fleeing violent situations often have to leave home quickly, without the chance to collect basic items. These children arrive in emergency accommodation with just the clothes they are wearing. • There are over 68,000 children in care in England. Almost 400,000 children received support from children’s services in England during 2014. Source: NSPCC web site Department of Education 2014

Buddy Bags for Children in Emergency Care We have created the Live Love Laugh Foundation in response to the rising number of children who enter emergency care after fleeing violent situations at home. Restoring a sense of safety and security into a child’s life during a traumatic time is one of the first steps to recovery. By providing these children with a few essential items, we can help make the transition into emergency care a little easier. To support children in this situation we have created the Buddy Bag to provide comfort when all else has been removed.

What is a Buddy Bag? A Buddy Bag is a backpack that contains all the essential items a child needs. They include toiletries, pyjamas, socks and underwear. They also include comfort items such as a book, a photo frame and a teddy bear. A Buddy Bag is something a child can call their own, no matter where they go. Buddy Bags are tailored to suit babies and children according to age groups and gender and cater specifically for children aged 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 and 13-16 years old. Purpose Our purpose is to provide 20,200 Buddy Bags to children who arrive in emergency accommodation without the essential items they need to help restore a sense of safety and security. How can I help? Due to the nature of our foundation and appeal, we’re always looking for help from individuals and businesses alike. Whether you have some spare time and skills, items or cash to donate, all is welcome. For more information please contact Angela Gakis, via contact details below.

live laugh love Foundation Where did the Buddy Bag idea come from?

During a visit to Australia in 2014 our founder, Karen Williams, was inspired by an article about The Alannah and Madeline Foundation (www.amf.org.au) which has delivered more than 50,000 Buddy Bags to children in emergency care in Australia since 2007. On returning to the UK, Karen researched the facilities available to children in emergency care and discovered a huge need for Buddy Bags in the UK. To ensure as many children as possible can benefit from the Buddy Bag scheme, Karen set up The Live Love Laugh Foundation and launched the Buddy Bag appeal in the UK, with the help and support of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

BROCCOLI,

SAVOY CABBAGE OR GREEN BEANS.

1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Place the meat and seasoned flour in a large plastic freezer bag. Seal the bag and shake well, until the meat is coated in the flour. 2. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and brown the meat in small batches, over a high heat. Add more oil if necessary. Transfer the meat to a large casserole dish. 3. Add the remaining oil to the pan and fry the onions for 5 minutes. Pour in the Guinness, stock and Worcestershire sauce and bring to the boil. Pour the liquid and onions over the meat and add the carrots, thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Cover and cook for about 3 hours until the meat is tender, stirring once. 4. To make the dumplings, place the flour, suet, horseradish and parsley in a large bowl. Season with half a teaspoon of salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper, then stir in enough cold water to mix to a soft dough. Using lightly floured hands, divide and shape into 8 dumplings. 5. Uncover the stew and gently sit the dumplings on top of the meat. Cover and cook for a further 20 minutes until the dumplings are fluffy and risen. Serve sprinkled with extra freshly ground black pepper. TIP: If you don’t want to serve this stew with dumplings, try topping with sliced potatoes instead. Arrange 3 large peeled and thinly sliced potatoes in concentric circles on top of the stew after 2 hours cooking time. Season well and dot with butter. Return to the oven, uncovered, and cook for a further 1- 1¼ hours until both meat and potatoes are tender.
