THE
WELCOME
CM21
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe march edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION Have you noticed that the mornings and afternoons are slowly getting lighter? I’m up at the crack of dawn to drive my husband to the station and it is such a pleasure to see a chink of daylight first thing and know that spring is on its way. It won’t be long before I’ll be watching the sunrise on my journey back home - what a glorious way to start the day! I’m a mum so it would seem slightly remiss of me if I didn’t remind you about Mothering Sunday - it’s a little earlier this year on Sunday 6th March... forget it at your peril and remember the greatest gift you can give anyone (but especially mums!) is your time. So make time for yours whether it’s a phone call or a visit - these are the gifts that are truly priceless! Don’t forget if you have an event coming up or belong to a group that could do with a little boost please do get in touch. This month I have loved helping: SMHT, Grove Cottage, The Gibberd Gallery and everyone that appears on the community and listings pages, which are FREE. It was a particular pleasure to be able to help the nursery at Fawbert & Barnard with an advert, as I’ve been really trying to encourage our schools to get involved in the magazine a little more. Here’s hoping this is the start of something! Happy Easter!

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
THRIPLOW DAFFODILS Every spring the little village of Thriplow, seven miles south of Cambridge, has a Daffodil Weekend to raise money for charity. In 2016, the festival will be in April (thriplowdaffodils.org.uk), but you can walk this circuit any time, admire the budding flowers along the route and support Thriplow’s friendly, community-run pub. Turn right out of the Green Man along Lower Street. After about 150m, turn left just before Yew Tree Cottage along a footpath leading to Middle Street, turn right along this road and left again along another footpath, leading past fields to Church Street. Turn right along the road and then left onto a track at the corner, just beyond Paddock House, following signs towards Heathfield. Follow this track left again, just before buildings, and then take footpath right and left around a wood and finally left again through trees. Turn right past a pond with the water on your right and then left along an ancient track known as “The Drift” that leads to Church Street. Turn right and follow the road, forking left near the school to return to the pub. LOCATION:

local business people in person Name and Business Robyn Bailey at The Tudor House.
Where do you live? I live in creative Harlow! What’s your favourite local venue? The Sawbridgeworth memorial hall has hosted enjoyable and atmospheric events. It’s always a cheerful place to be. What’s your favourite local shop? I love the place I work. The Tudor House Gallery along Knight Street is a beautiful and unique place that supports local artists. Everyone I’ve met is incredibly kind and supportive. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? The tightknit community that endeavours to keep
Sawbridgeworth going throughout each year. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I work on my Foundation Degree in Fine Art, taking photo’s of the wildlife in my garden, watching Japanese Anime or the latest sci-fi film. I set up my business because... I wanted to work for myself and be able to make and sell my artwork professionally. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Recently I had a group exhibition named ‘Dexterity’ at The Courtyard Arts Centre in Hertford where I sold my first original painting!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING CHICKEN IN RED WINE 2 tbsp olive oil 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks 225g button mushrooms 200g shallots, peeled 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 300ml red wine 200ml chicken or vegetable stock 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree 1 bay leaf
THIS
2tbsp cornflour
TO SERVE CHICKEN.
IS A QUICK, EASY AND FLAVOURSOME WAY
Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish
WINE SUCH AS A
Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve
A REALLY PRICY ONE!
USE A FULL-BODIED RED BURGUNDY FOR THE BEST
FLAVOUR, ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY
1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon. 2. Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf. 3. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender. 4. Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs. TIP: This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.

Grove cottage the home of celebrating 50 years in 2016 Grove Cottage, the home of Bishop’s Stortford Mencap is proud to celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2016.
grow our existing clubs and develop much needed life skills opportunities for adults and children with learning disability.
Grove Cottage was set up in 1966 by a small group of families to who didn’t have anywhere for their children to go. They felt alienated and got together and started a support group which has evolved over the last 50 years to Grove Cottage as we know it today.
To achieve our dreams costs money and we could not continue without the support of the local community.
Kevin Davis, Trustee at Grove Cottage said: “We are so proud to have reached this incredible milestone at Grove Cottage and it would not have been possible without the fantastic support of the local community. We would like to invite everyone who has been involved with Grove Cottage over the last 50 years to get in touch and come and join us in our celebrations during 2016. At Grove Cottage we face three key challenges: Awareness: Although we have been around for 50 years many people don’t know about us and we need to continue working with the local community to raise awareness
We look forward to welcoming old and new members, families, staff, volunteers and supporters of Grove Cottage to celebrate with us in 2016. Without all of you our success and celebrations this year would not have been possible.” Grove Cottage provides social and educational activities for people of all ages with learning disabilities. They run a Special Needs Nursery, Performing Arts Clubs, Youth Clubs, Adult Social Clubs, Get Active Clubs, Saturday and School Holiday Clubs, a Stay and Play Toddler Group, a Speech & Language service and take adult members away on residential breaks and have very exciting plans for the future.
Volunteers: Grove Cottage could not run without Volunteers. If you have time and skills to offer – we will put them to good use! Funding: It costs over £250,000 to run Grove Cottage each year and we could not exist without the support of the local community. Although we are linked to Mencap we receive no funding from them. Despite our challenges, the future looks very exciting for Grove Cottage. We are bursting at the seams at 151 London Road, Bishop’s Stortford. We are looking for a building to renovate or a plot of land to build on to enable us to

To run all these clubs costs over £250,000 pa and Grove Cottage could not exist without the support of the local community as they receive no central funding from Mencap. Natalie Trapmore, fundraising at Grove Cottage said: “We want to have a year of celebrations with the Bishop’s Stortford community. We have lots of exciting activities planned. We have Quiz nights, Comedy nights, Pampering events, Uncle Funk events, Golf Days, Choral extravaganzas, a 50th Anniversary Ball and much, much more. Maybe you are also celebrating something special this year? Over the last 50 years, many people have asked their friends and family to consider an alternative way of celebrating by making a donation to Grove Cottage rather than buying them presents. This is an incredibly generous act and helps make a real difference to our members. We would like to invite everyone who may also be celebrating in 2016 to consider supporting Grove Cottage; you may be having your Golden Wedding Anniversary, 50th Birthday, Wedding or any other memorable event. If you are interested in doing this you could set up a ‘Just Giving’ page or ask for a Grove Cottage Gift card or a donation to be made instead.
Supporting people of all ages with learning disability. One new initiative we are very excited about is the launch of our NEW Grove Cottage Gift Card that you can purchase in support of Grove Cottage. It’s a great way to give a life changing gift to your friends and family and make a real difference to local people with learning disabilities. Gift cards are now available in £10, £20 and £50 denominations and are available online at www.mencapgrovecottage.org. Please help to share smiles at Grove Cottage during their 50th anniversary year and give a Grove Cottage gift card to someone you know. We look forward to celebrating with everyone in Bishop’s Stortford. Thank you all so much for your continued support - you make a real difference.” To find out more about how to support Grove Cottage and to join in their 50th anniversary celebrations go to www.mencapgrovecottage.org or give them a Facebook LIKE on grovecottagebishopsstortfordmencap. To donate go to www.justgiving.com/grovecottage or send a cheque made payable to Bishop’s Stortford Mencap to Natalie Trapmore, Grove Cottage, 151 London Road, Bishop’s Stortford, Herts CM23 3JX.
