Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Lavender in Letchworth This summery suggestion is a bit further away and more of an outing than a walk, but there are two great reasons for a visit to Letchworth in June or July: Cadwell Lavender Farm, with a lovely café, and Letchworth’s open air lido, on the edge of Norton Common. You could walk from the farm into town on the historic Icknield Way and then follow various interesting routes through town or country. The relatively new “Greenway” offers more than 13 miles of (mostly) country trails. You can find a map at www.greenway.org.uk. For those interested in 20th-century architecture, Letchworth has some fascinating buildings, including the old Spirella Factory near the station. The welcoming museum on Norton Way www. garden-cities-exhibition.com has walk leaflets and more… Finally, you might want to head to the outdoor pool on Norton Common, off Icknield Way, to cool down after sightseeing. Simply stroll through the watery Howard Park and north up Norton Way. For more short walks in Letchworth, why not amble around leafy Norton Common after your wander through the blooming Lavender fields. LOCATION:

silver swans

A National ballet school specialising in ballet for the retired By Carrie Johnson

We are a National Ballet School with fully qualified teachers who specialise in ballet for the retired. I developed Silver Swans was developed with the idea of bringing together a community of retired ladies to regain fitness, flexibility and companionship through the medium of ballet. Having four daughters and spending many hours watching them enjoy the love of ballet, I pondered on the thoughts of why ballet could not be continued through adulthood and into the silver years. Zumba, aerobics, the gym and keep fit can be intimidating not to mention hard on limbs, knees, hips and shoulders. However, exercise especially gentle exercise has shown great improvements in flexibility, posture and core muscles.

Therefore, I investigated the benefits of ballet and to my surprise not only realised the physical benefits, but found that ballet and other forms of gentle exercise can ward off dementia (See article below). Armed with all this information, I set about finding the right teachers and venues for my classes. My teaching team are all highly trained and have a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion for dance but most importantly a sense of humour. We always end our classes with a welcome tea, coffee and biscuit. It’s not just about the exercise, it’s about making new friends and being party of a community. A Flock of Silver Swans...

Parndon Mill: open studios A hub of creativity

Magnificent glass, weaving, calligraphy, guitar making, ceramics, jewellery and metalwork along with fine arts will be on view here during the Open Studios event. There will also be an insight into architectural skills and the work of graphic and product designers. The artists, craftspeople and designers will talk about their work and demonstrate their techniques. Glass blowing is particularly dramatic and visitors are invited to “have a go”. One hour taster workshops in fused glass, ceramics and felt making will also be offered. It will be a privilege to listen to Richard Ove Stokkereit playing one of David Rouse’s classical guitars in his studio from time to time during the weekend. There will also be an opportunity to watch the construction and firing of a traditional Roman dug-in-the-ground kiln built by Chris Lydamore, former manager of Harlow Museum. The articles to be fired will be made by schoolchildren with the guidance of Parndon Mill’s potters. Examples of the work of most of the participating artists will be exhibited in The Project Space on the ground floor and will hopefully tempt viewers to make the climb to the top floor of the mill. The exhibition in The Gallery, “Chaos Theory” will present cast glass sculpture by Parndon Mill artist Heike Brachlow who exhibits her work internationally. Refreshments will be available throughout the weekend. where: the gallery at

Fancy a paddle?

Even local people are amazed when they first discover the secret of Redricks lakes, a secluded lakeside and café based next to the River Stort hidden between Harlow and Sawbridgeworth. The lakes offer a great place to start paddling with starter sessions for groups and parties looking for an adventure together on the River Stort and an ideal spot to explore the historic mills and locks and Malting’s, many dating back to the opening of the navigation in 1769. One question we always get from our beginners is do we have to capsize or come out of the boat upside down. Often paddlers are put off by what to do if a boat goes over. To help them we have very stable boats with specialist skegs which help build beginners confidence as well as paddling downstream in a straight line. We leave capsizing for the first time for one of our pool sessions aimed at developing confidence, rolling and specialist skills in the comfort of the pool. Whoosh Explore offer summer tours of the river as well as specialist individualised coaching for adults on a Saturday morning as well as regular Junior coaching sessions on Saturday afternoons. After a short introduction in either open boats or touring kayaks we offer paddlers the opportunity to explore the river from the

What’s on at Whoosh This year we are running tours of the River Stort from Redricks lakes, Sawbridgeworth as well as taster paddling sessions from Redricks lakes to Pishobury park on the following Saturday mornings where we will be exploring the parkland by river up to Feakes Lock. For keen paddlers there is also the option of a trip up to the Sawbridgeworth maltings, with time to enjoy a break at one of the Cafes and tea rooms, or a quick look at the antiques and curios for sale in the antiques centre before a leisuely paddle back downstream. Dates for Paddles: June 11th & 18th July 2nd August 27th September 3rd October 1st & 22nd November 12th & 29th Whoosh Explore is a non for profit canoe club, it has charitable aims which include the development and training of young people into outdoor instructors offering young people the opportunity to gain experience and qualifications in outdoor education.

at redricks! lakes and with our fleet of trailers are able to tow boats for more challenging tours to some great rivers with both placid and white water enthusiasts catered for. Part of our philosophy is to encourage young paddlers to gain qualifications and skills in paddle sport with our ‘U canoe’ paddlers developing coaching experience, helping them to develop and run sessions at the club. We have open canoes ideal for couples to paddle together and kayaks available to paddle as an individual, either as part of a small group or as a family. We try to theme our paddles so we have adult sessions, teenage sessions or mixed family sessions for learning to paddle together as well as delivering one off experiences for groups

of friends looking to have a memorable day out together. With family time very precious and so many commitments we don’t require paddlers to become locked into membership of the club. We have many club friends supporters who may only paddle 2-3 times a year.

Children First Carers are needed for all sorts of young people who need care, time and a safe, nurturing environment - Can YOU Foster! In the summer of 2007 2-year-old “Laura” came to us from hospital. She was the size of a 3-month-old baby due to severe neglect. She had severe disabilities, could not talk, stand or walk, had no appetite and would rock her head from side to side. In her first 6 months with us, we showed Laura simple body movements and how to grasp toys. With the help of a physiotherapist she started to crawl and eventually walk. Our local hospital gave Laura special formulas to increase her appetite and growth, which in turn helped her teeth to develop and she was able to start on solid foods. During this time she started to make normal baby sounds. Laura made massive progress once she had gained weight and started looking and behaving like a 2-year-old child should. Slowly she started to enjoy going out and mixing with other children. Her development and communication skills accelerated quickly. Her Doctors were shocked at how quickly she had progressed; we were all amazed! At this moment in time Laura is a totally independent child who no longer requires help from the hospital. Her growth and development is normal for a child of her age, now six. She is at a mainstream school and is doing very well in year one. She is a happy healthy active child and everyone is overwhelmed at how she has improved and we are really happy to have her as our foster child. We are blessed to now be Laura’s long-term carers and look forward to the years ahead where we can watch her develop and progress through life.

LOCALs that launch: Jaclyn Dunne left the corporate world to embark on a new career in 2012 after realising life is too short not to follow your passion. Initially studying as a counsellor and hypnotherapist, she ultimately qualified as a nutritionist and health coach and Mind and Body Detox was born. Jaclyn’s husband James, an ex professional footballer and now qualified personal trainer has joined her in her quest of empowering their clients to lead a healthier life...

What is mind and body detox? We are a local husband and wife team who work together to create significant shifts in our client’s attitude towards nutrition, health, exercise mindset and beyond. We are fat loss specialists for men and women 35+. We support and motivate our clients to implement positive lifestyle changes that may even possibly save lives by optimising health and wellness. How do you do this? Through an in-depth consultation with Jaclyn, our Nutritionist who questions our clients to gain clarity and focus of where they are at present and how we can move them forward towards their goal and beyond. We determine a client’s plan of action by analysing their ultimate goal and which of our skillset will be best suited to the desired outcome. We are qualified in hypnotherapy, food intolerance testing, personalized nutrition, DNA Fit Testing and personal training which, according to client preference, can be at our clients home or at Pure Body Health in Dunmow. Most of our clients have no idea how good their

bodies are designed to feel as they are so used to constantly feeling tired, lethargic, fatigued, irritable, etc. What’s the most rewarding element of your work? Most of our female clients have shared that after having their children, they feel: • • • • •

Overweight In a constant state of Groundhog Day Have low energy levels They are a low priority Unhappy with the way they feel or look.

They need to start looking after themselves so they can look after their loved ones and start to feel comfortable and confident but they don’t know where or how to start. It is truly wonderful to see the journeys and transformations that our clients make on our transformation packages. Having embarked on a program with us, Eve of Hatfield Heath said: “They were reasonably priced but not the cheapest option however, nobody offered in such detail, mindset, nutrition and training. really helped and encouraged me to remedy my weight issue that stemmed from stress and hormone levels, which I hadn’t realized were so out of balance. They didn’t only help me achieve my goals; I gained more energy, lost significant weight and increased muscle at the same time, (losing 14lbs in body fat and gaining 5% muscle in 4 weeks) which has never happened. I was challenged through exercises that I never felt that I could do and I managed to complete with relative ease. They have now helped me set new goals to achieve and I can’t wait for further progression.”

How do you test for food intolerances? Our food intolerance tests are carried out by Jaclyn who takes a finger prick of blood, which is sent to a lab to be tested for an intolerant reaction with over 150 ingredients. Definitive results are returned to us within 10 days. Jaclyn has recently co-authored the International best selling book, “What’s left to Eat” which focuses on eating a diet free from allergenic and intolerant ingredients, therefore, she is well placed to advise our clients on coping with, managing and in some cases eradicating food intolerances.

Her feedback is typical of our clients, once they start they don’t look back - it truly is a transformational experience!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

What do your transformation packages include? Our transformation packages run for 6, 8 and 12 weeks and are tailored to individual clients requirements. They most commonly include personal training sessions, nutrition assessment, a personalised nutrition plan and regular accountability sessions with Jaclyn to monitor weight, body fat, muscle and water and to ensure diet is on point.

We are extremely passionate about our work and find it highly rewarding to work alongside committed clients who want to make significant changes. If this is you we are offering the first ten people that contact us a free 15-minute assessment, which is highly valuable to determine how we could help you, feel fitter and healthier. We look forward to helping you transform your mind and body...

1. Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. 2. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways. 3. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps. 4. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary. 5. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice. 6. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

TIP: Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape.
