THE
WELCOME
CM21
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe august edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION For me August has always been the half waypoint of my year. OK, I appreciate that it’s not technically half way through the year but making it to August, a.k.a “The Summer Holidays” in one piece, with my sanity in tact, hair still attached to my head and on speaking terms with my family, is one of the seven wonders of my little world! The sense of elation knowing that you have successfully delivered your child to every audition, rehearsal, after school club and end of year show(s) on time, with pack lunch AND not forgotten a hair clip/brush, prop and spares “just in case” is a wonder to behold. I’ve calmed nerves before exams and productions and cheered at every fete, fair and festival and now it all stops. For the next 6 weeks, there are no more after school clubs to rush too. No more homework to preside over - no more early morning dashes to Tesco to pick up forgotten ingredients for a cookery lesson... It’s a milestone, a breather, a rest before it starts again in the Autumn and that’s a whole 6 weeks away... bliss! To all parents, grandparents and carers, teachers, school support staff, volunteers and group/club organisers - I salute you! (We made it!) Another person that has been experiencing the hurly burly of life recently is Mayor David Royle. I’m delighted that he will be sharing his exploits in a column entitled “A Mayor’s Life”. Similarly, PCSO Amanda Higham and PCSO Paul Weston have been in touch and have written an article too. Thank you all very much and also to everyone else that takes time to contribute to the magazine, it wouldn’t be the same without you - thank you!
Until next month, Lorraine

Late summer strawberries The pick-your-own fruit farm at Cammas Hall is open until the end of September and has a lovely tea barn and nature trail. A mile outside Hatfield Broad Oak, surrounded by fields and woods, Cammas Hall is a favourite summer destination for many local families. The nature trail leads past the strawberries and raspberries, turns right at the end of the field and then left through a gap in the hedge, around the edge of a wood (with trees on your left). Keep on between fields of wheat and potatoes, following red arrows with info panels, until you reach a grassy track and turn right. At the end of a large field, turn right again along another grassy track, winding towards Row Wood. Approaching the wood, follow the arrows diagonally right across a meadow and the paths along the edge of fields, with fruit farm soon visible again, through trees on your right. Finally, the grassy tracks and arrows lead you right over a little bridge and back to the tea barn, where you can reward yourself with coffee, a slice of carrot cake or a punnet full of seasonal fruit. herts sports partnership mums on the move As part of This Girl Can in Herts Week, the Herts Sports & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP) supported 14 teams including 3 from Sawbridgeworth, that’s 56 runners, to enter the Hertfordshire Relay Run, held recently at Hartham Common in Hertford. Participants of HSP’s Moving Mums project, all these mums had been encouraged to start running at local and friendly sessions at their children’s school gates; either after morning drop off or before the afternoon collection. The project focus is to encourage mums with children of primary school age to increase their levels of physical activity and sport. Instructor led running, cycling, aerobics and yoga sessions are all on offer in or close to the participating primary schools. The Sawbridgeworth Moving Mums Run Group have been meeting every Thursday morning at 9am outside Fawbert & Barnard School since October with their Group Leader, Nicola Tilley who as well as a Run England Leader also runs MumsFit which specialises in pre/postnatal and womens fitness. Nicola has children at both Fawbert & Barnard and Reedings Schools in Sawbridgeworth and is passionate about running and helping to get mums active in the local community. The project recognises that young mothers have very busy schedules and provides the opportunity for participation, at the school gates, at a time which suits them. Not only has the programme increased activity levels amongst local mums, but has created friendship groups and mutual support networks for mums who can often feel isolated and disconnected during the formative years of their children’s lives.
the ongoing support HSP. So far 45 mums have qualified as leaders, helping to make the local Moving Mums groups sustainable The East Herts programme now leads the way in Hertfordshire, and has been supported from the outset by Active East Herts, the local Community Sports Network. For the recent Relay Run event teams came from over East Herts including 3 teams came from Sawbridgeworth headed up by Group Run Leader, Nicola Tilley: • Morgans Primary School Hertford (1 team) • Hertingfordbury Cowper Primary School (3 teams) • Manor Fields Primary School, Bishops Stortford (1 team) • Reedings Junior School Sawbridgeworth (2 teams) • Fawbert & Barnards Infant School, Sawbridgeworth (1 team) The activity was followed by a celebration event with Prosecco and cake to recognise the commitment and achievements of the participating Moving Mums, and the success of the programme locally. Any school or community group wishing to get involved in the Moving Mums project, and want to know more about what’s on offer, should contact Jane Parker, details below.
Free training is offered to group members, who in time take over the leadership of the sessions, with

a mayor’s life never a dull moment
by David Royle
My first month as mayor has flown by, with an initial focus on visits to our splendid town schools to see how we can work more closely together. Two contrasting highlights stand out from early July: the excellent early morning but very well-attended Somme 100 commemoration service at Great St Mary’s, followed by readings and poetry which helped to contextualise and localise the impact of that terrible event. Many thanks to all concerned. Secondly, at the other end of the human experience so to speak, I was pleased to take part with County Councillor Roger Beeching in the ceremonial opening of the impressive Southbrook Allotments’ ecotoilet (funded by the Town Council and Cllr.
Beeching’s locality budget)! Not only is it solar powered (the fan) but it is also non-discriminatory: all must sit to make it work properly! Moreover, the ‘proceeds’ go to the very good cause of improved crop growth! A further similarly funded toilet is on the Bullfields’ Allotment.

Children First
Fact! Fostering is about more than long-term care! Are you interested in fostering but are unsure of how it will work for you? Well, we may be able to provide you with an answer. Not all fostering placements require full-time care for long periods; in fact there are different types of fostering placements, here are details of just a few: Parent and child placements These placements are designed to support parents who require guidance in learning to care for their babies. Foster carers will be expected to work alongside a team of professionals to assess the parent’s ability to look after the child as well as offering support.
try scoring The UK’s premier award winning FUN and EXCITING sports development programme for children from 18 months to 6 years
Planned Break (Respite) Fostering When full-time foster carers need a short break, planned break foster carers can step in during holidays; weekends or when day-care isn’t available. Planned break foster carers will need to provide the same level of support as full-time carers during their placement. Planned break fostering is a great way for people who are considering fostering to gain experience before committing to placement. Short-term Fostering Children or young people who require short-term care will be placed with foster carers who are willing to provide care on a time-limited basis. Emergency fostering: If an unexpected event occurs which means a child can no longer remain in the family home, the child may need a safe place to stay at short notice on a short-term basis. An emergency foster carer will need to be prepared to provide their care at short notice should an unexpected event occur. If you feel like you could make a difference in a child’s life please give us a call or simply get in touch via the website or our social media pages.

Grove cottage the home of 50th birthday party and reunion - sunday 11th Sept Grove Cottage, the home of Bishop’s Stortford Mencap is proud to celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2016. Grove Cottage was set up in 1966 by a small group of families to who didn’t have anywhere for their children to go. They felt alienated and got together and started a support group which has evolved over the last 50 years to Grove Cottage as we know it today. Kevin Davis, Trustee at Grove Cottage said “We are so proud to have reached this incredible milestone at Grove Cottage and it would not have been possible without the fantastic support of the local community. We would like to invite everyone who has been involved with Grove Cottage over the last 50 years to join us at our 50th Birthday party and reunion on Sunday 11th September at Great Hadham Golf Club, 12.30 – 4.30.”
We have an afternoon packed full of family fun with performances from Herts and Soul Community Choir, Foxy Flamenco, Pauline Quirke Academy, Standon Morris, Bishops Stortford Woodwind band, Live Wire Rock academy and Kool Hand Ukulele plus much more. Leos Play bus will also be there with face painting, balloon modelling, a magician, BBQ, Candy floss and sweet stall run by Grove Cottage club members Suggested minimum donation is only £2 per individual and £5 for a family and it promises to be a great day out for all the family and a chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones!” To find out more and to get involved contact Natalie, details are below.
Natalie Trapmore, Fundraising at Grove Cottage said “We are really keen to reach out and find people who have been involved with Grove Cottage in any way over the last 50 years to come along and celebrate with us. You may have been a member, or someone in your family may have been to Grove Cottage. You may have worked or volunteered with us or you may have run or attended an event – or brought raffle tickets or made a donation to us or maybe you know someone who was involved with Grove Cottage. Also, if you are interested in finding out more about Grove Cottage and how you could get involved and become part of our future – we would love to see you too. Everyone is welcome.

Bishop’s Stortford mencap
At Grove Cottage we face three key challenges. Awareness: Although we have been around for 50 years many people don’t know about us and we need to continue working with the local community to raise awareness Volunteers: Grove Cottage could not run without Volunteers. If you have time and skills to offer – we will put them to good use! Funding: It costs over £250,000 to run Grove Cottage each year and we could not exist without the support of the local community. Although we are linked to Mencap we receive no funding from them. Despite our challenges, the future looks very exciting for Grove Cottage. We are bursting at the seams at 151 London Road, Bishop’s Stortford. We are looking for a building to renovate or a plot of land to build on to enable us to grow our existing clubs and develop much needed life skills opportunities for adults and children with learning disability. To achieve our dreams costs money and we could not continue without the support of the local community.
We look forward to welcoming old and new members, families, staff, volunteers and supporters of Grove Cottage to celebrate with us in. Without all of you our success and celebrations this year would not have been possible. What We Do Grove Cottage provides social and educational activities for people of all ages with learning disabilities. They run a Special Needs Nursery, Performing Arts Clubs, Youth Clubs, Adult Social Clubs, Get Active Clubs, Saturday and School Holiday Clubs, a Stay and Play Toddler Group, a Speech & Language service and take adult members away on residential breaks and have very exciting plans for the future. To run all these clubs costs over £250,000 pa and Grove Cottage could not exist without the support of the local community as they receive no central funding from Mencap. To donate go to www.justgiving.com/ grovecottage or send a cheque made payable to Bishop’s Stortford Mencap to Natalie Trapmore, Grove Cottage, 151 London Road, Bishop’s Stortford, Herts CM23 3JX.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING SALMON AND BROCCOLI QUICHE 250g shortcrust pastry 300g salmon fillets 200g small broccoli florets 4 large eggs 250ml double cream 100ml milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper
A
50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated
AND BROCCOLI.
RICH AND CREAMY QUICHE PACKED
FULL OF SUCCULENT SALMON FLAKES

WITH A CRISP GREEN LEAF SALAD.
1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5. 3. Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender. 4. Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold. TIP: Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture.

policing our local community advice about cold callers from PCSO’s Amanda and paul from sawbridgeworth police Sawbridgeworth Police often receive reports about traders cold calling at the door telling homeowners that they need work to be done to their home, garden, roof, guttering or that their trees are unsafe and need work. The work has then been badly done and sometimes the price jumped by ten times because the trader “helpfully” found other gardening work that also had to be done!
off period. The homeowner must be given written information about their right to cancel, about the identity of the trader who is doing the work and the total cost of the work to be carried out. The consumer must authorise the trader in writing if the work is to start within the 14 day cooling off period. Just having a statement on a flyer or business card that there is a 14 day cooling off period is not enough.
We also receive reports about other home maintenance cold calls such as driveway work and roof cleaning. In some driveway cleaning cases the traders have persuaded the homeowner to have the back patio cleaned as well as the front drive, causing the price to jump up hugely from the original estimate. Although roof cleaning may make the tiles look cleaner, the force of the pressure washer can cause other problems with the roof. The National Federation of Roofing Contractors advises that moss is not a problem on a roof and that this service is completely unnecessary.
Please keep an eye out for any vulnerable neighbours who may be approached by cold callers. If someone has agreed to work from a cold call and there is no paperwork, it is likely that there will be a problem.
Our advice is never to have work done by anyone who cold calls. No reputable trader ever approaches a customer in this way. If you think your home or garden needs work, please use a recommendation from friends and neighbours or find a good trader. You should also obtain three quotes to check if the price is competitive and if the work really needs doing - never rely on the word of a single trader. Any contracts over £42 that are agreed in a consumer’s home are subject to a 14 day cooling
Similarly, if you see roof work being carried out and there is no scaffolding in place, there is likely to be a problem with that trader. Call 101 to let the local police know. If you need further help or advice please contact the Citizen’s Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506. For a Trading Standards recommended tradesperson contact Trading Standards on 08454 040506 or visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk We are currently in the process of seeing if it would be viable to make Sawbridgeworth a No Cold Calling Zone. To achieve this, we would need a majority of residents to be in agreement. It would mean Trading Standards and Police will have more powers to deal robustly with cold callers within the Town. I will keep you posted… If you have any issues or questions, email amanda.higham@herts.pnn.police.uk or paul. weston@herts.pnn.police.uk

SAWBOBUS Poem by local resident
‘OUR BUS’ Have you used the Sawbo bus? It is there for all of us. To the village, now a town A handy little runaround. People greet you They get to know The drivers they To make you have
with a smile you, in while. go all the way a happy day.
They do their very best to please, Helping People with bad knees. The level crossing can be a curse When running late, it makes it worse. We know the drivers are not to blame It affects them too, just the same. Many a laugh on the bus you hear Help your troubles to disappear. In all weather, hot or wet To your destination you will get. Please use the bus and if you do I’m sure it will always be there for you.
