WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe september edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION

CONNECTION

A very compact and bijou editor’s note this month. To coin a phrase from one of my fav children’s authors, it was a bit of a “Squash and a Squeeze” trying to fit everything into this month’s edition!

september 2016 ISSUE 23

It’s all good though, I’m sure you won’t mind my reduced witterings or miss the “Listings” page for one edition... Just had so much local content that was date critical that I couldn’t not run everything! I think I’ve managed to accommodate everyone and I sincerely thank you all for getting in touch to share your events. Please do keep them coming! At the same time please don’t forget to support your local businesses by using their services as and when you can. Without their advertising, I would not be able to share everything that I do - and to use another quote, this time from a local organisation, “We had so much more interest in our event after you publicised it for us, that’s why we want to do it again...” Comments like that add a little sparkle to my world, thank you!

Until next month,

Lorraine

Let’s walk to school Sawbo Travel Challenge greener journeys to school Sawbridgeworth Town Council and the four local primary schools: Mandeville, Fawbert and Barnard, Reedings and Spellbrook have all joined forces for an exciting competition week to promote more sustainable journeys to and from school with an aim to reduce car usage and get people more active in Sawbridgeworth. From 26th September 2016, children from each of the schools will be walking, scooting, cycling, parking and striding to and from school. The town council are even providing a mini bus service for those pupils at Spellbrook, who live a little further away. Each day will have a different theme, such as Wear Something Green Monday, Wacky Wednesday and Funky Footwear Friday. On the Saturday 1st October from 1-4pm, the town are then holding a family walk around Sawbridgeworth, taking in the Twitchells and areas of local interest. Props such as wigs and glasses will be found along the route so that

IT’s your community

the centre of wellbeing do you have mental health? by Claire evans Hopefully, you have answered yes to this because we all do have mental health!

own way of expressing yourself which, in turn, will connect you with your own wellbeing.

The challenge we have, however, is talking about mental health because of the many negative meanings and connotations around the word ‘mental’.

The Centre of Wellbeing in Sawbridgeworth is creating a community hub to embrace and acknowledge mental health challenges and diagnoses and encourage open conversations around these subjects. However, the founder and all its members feel it’s time to celebrate mental health and to shift focus towards emotional intelligence and the self-management of wellbeing.

We’re all guilty of having used this term, in some form, as an insult or a self deprecation and that’s, unfortunately, due to the way in which society and our culture have influenced us. However, my philosophy in life is to acknowledge that negative attitudes exist towards mental health and then to continue to focus on more beneficial things such as wellbeing. Wellbeing is simply an all-encompassing term for that feeling when we feel contentment on every level. Contentment being a state of acceptance of things as they are, even when they are not always as we’d like! So the question is more around what would bring your focus towards wellbeing? What answers come to you when you reflect on the statement: ‘I feel better when I am…’ ?

Claire Evans, founder of The Centre of Wellbeing, is bringing together a number of speakers, alternative & complementary therapists and charities to a collaborative event on World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2016, 12-2pm – see poster for details. Please attend this FREE event and afford yourself the opportunity to experience how you may be able to better manage your mental health and wellbeing.

rethinkyourmind is a project that is centred around this theme, it encourages everyone to enter art, poetry or photography submissions that express the reflections. The beauty of this expression is that it comes from our creativity, not our mind, and it brings with it a feeling of contentment and wellbeing. It might be that you do not feel you can express yourself in these formats but you’ll likely enjoy encouraging others, discussing your ideas and enjoying the diversity of creations submitted. And potentially, you will be led down a path to your

What do you like doing when you’re not working? Cooking, cinema, reading, going to book clubs…

What’s your favourite local venue? It’s not really a venue but I love Pishiobury Park - the rolling landscape and old trees are beautiful and a boardwalk through the marsh connects it to the river. What’s your favourite local shop? It’s fun to explore the Maltings near the railway station, especially the Herts & Essex Antiques centre - a treasure trove on several floors with a café at the top. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? I love the way it combines the best aspects of a town and a village and that there’s so much lovely countryside nearby, from Hatfield Forest, through

I just helped write and edit a book about Welsh steam railways! Favourite one liner or silliest thing you’ve ever overheard: I don’t know about ever (can’t remember that long!) but I recently watched the hilarious Danish Midtraffik bus advert for the first time; if you haven’t seen it, google it!

fiddlers brook morris

looking for something different to do? why not try morris dancing? Fiddlers Brook Morris was formed in 1987, dancing out for the first time in 1988 at the Queens Head, Allens Green. Our dances come mainly from the mill towns of the north west of England, some of which we have invented ourselves, with a few from the borders of England and Wales. We perform our dances in clogs and bright costumes of turquoise, gold and black. Our main dancing seasons are spring and summer when we perform in public whenever we can, especially at local pubs on Tuesday evenings. We have also spent weekends away at festivals in Scarborough, Littleborough, Wimborne and Chippenham, and have danced at local spots as diverse as Hatfield House and Stansted Airport. You may have seen us dancing at the Sawbridgeworth May Fair and thought you might like to have a go.

a mayor’s life mayor’s mascot by David Royle

Following the successful Duck Race last year to raise money for the Guides and the guest appearances of Cllr. Eric Buck(Duck)master’s oversized duck thereafter I felt obliged to retaliate! I took Kermit with me to an assembly at Mandeville and they kindly undertook to suggest some animal mascots. The shortlist is: Bob the Dragon; Leo the Lion; Sally the Squirrel; David the Unicorn. I asked the other schools/school councils to ‘vote’ and so far Reedings has suggested David the Unicorn! Although Sawbridgeworth Guides have suggested I am better as a Roy(a)l(e) duck! Looks more like Henry VIII to me! Future mayors please note!

Mayor’s Charity (St Elizabeth’s) key fundraising dates for your diary: Saturday 1 October: quiz at Bullfields (and Town Walk) Thursday 2 February: Sawbridgeworth Round the World Progressive Dinner Saturday 4 March: Variety Show, Memorial Hall Saturday 29 April: Civic Dinner, Memorial Hall Fundraising target

The Fun2Go side-by-side bike (inset) is a specialised bike for people with limited mobility, enabling them to enjoy the feeling of riding a bike. It is simple to use and safety is a priority, for both carers and users. It will allow St Elizabeth’s children to play and cycle together for the first time. I hope you can join me in raising money for this very worthwhile cause.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING COD, PRAWN AND PARSLEY PIE 1.6kg floury potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 750g cod fillet 1L milk 1 bay leaf Few black peppercorns 75g butter 50g plain flour 3 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

COD

175g frozen peas, thawed 225g large peeled prawns, thawed if frozen 15ml olive oil Sprig of fresh parsley, to garnish

AND PRAWNS IN A SMOOTH HERBY WHITE SAUCE TOPPED WITH FLUFFY MASH – IT’S THE ULTIMATE FISH PIE!

1. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. 2. Meanwhile, place the cod in a large frying pan and pour over the milk. Add the bay leaf and peppercorns and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes then remove from the heat. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cod from the pan and set aside. Strain the milk into a large heatproof jug. 3. Melt 50g of the butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 850ml of the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time, then simmer for 3-4 minutes until you have a smooth, thick sauce. 4. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6. Flake the fish, discarding any skin and bones, and stir into the sauce with the parsley, peas and prawns. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Transfer the mixture to a deep ovenproof dish. 5. Mash the potatoes with the rest of the butter and milk and season to taste. Spoon the mash over the fish mixture to cover. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with a sprig of parsley. TIP: You can use any white fish fillet for this pie - haddock or coley will work just as well. Alternatively, replace half the cod with salmon fillet or smoked haddock, if liked.

SMHT Jazz club SMHT Jazz club at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall Last October not knowing whether anyone would come, we started a new Jazz club in Sawbridgeworth. We have seen some great bands, even an orchestra and all different types of Jazz genres. The bands have been a mixture of local talent from Herts, Essex and London, many of which have played at the great Jazz clubs in London eg Ronnie Scotts and Spice of life etc. The attendance numbers have been as much as 130 and the average 75. Overall a great start and we have raised a small amount of money for the Memorial Hall as it is a not for profit activity. Crooner Evening To celebrate our twelfth monthly session in September we are marking it with yet another genre, with our first crooner evening. Paul Wood singing in a quartet led by the fine piano player Brian Dee who lives in Sawbridgeworth and Martin Guy on drums from Bishop’s Stortford, they will be playing classic Sinatra, Tony Bennett etc. All have played in the clubs mentioned above.

It would be great to see you there!

IT’s your community

Hatfield Heath Bridge Club our bridge players have a busy social life We are very lucky there is a thriving bridge community in our area. There are U3A groups in Harlow, Sawbridgeworth, Thorley and Bishops Stortford and clubs that cater for all standards on each weekday and on some Sundays. You need never be lonely or stuck for something to do if you can play bridge.

Anyone can learn to play bridge. No prior knowledge is necessary. You don’t need a partner, a degree in mathematics or a photographic memory though it is helpful if you can count! The most important part is to want to learn something new and being open to the idea of meeting new people and making friends.

Hatfield Heath Bridge Club has been running classes since 2007 and in that time our membership has increased considerably and so has that of all the other local clubs. We now have our main club running every Wednesday evening with a separate section for newer players. Of course not everyone finds Wednesday evenings convenient but there are clubs that meet on Monday evenings, Tuesday afternoons & Thursday and Friday evenings.

The new session of classes starts on 19th September and further information can be obtained from Penny and Brian at hassells2@gmail.com or 01279 721428.

Not all bridge is played in organised sessions. Friends made in bridge classes often get together for a social game at home with a cup of tea and some cake or even supper and wine.

Sawbridgeworth nostalgia day

IT’s your community

nostalgia day with an added attraction

The town’s day of nostalgia is being held on Saturday 12th November at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. There will be a performance by children from the local theatre group Diverse Performing Arts, plus professional singer Aimi Percival who will lead us in rousing patriotic songs. This year’s main theme will be American Air Force as there were many airbases nearby. Children can also take part in activities related to remembrance. Vintage military vehicles will be on display at the Hall. If you wish to go to the Airfield Memorial first in a vintage military vehicle to pay your respects to those we remember there, be at the Memorial Hall by 10.30am to be back by 11.30am. A minibus, courtesy of Sawbridgeworth Town Council, will also be available for those wishing to travel to the Memorial.
