CONNECTION
I know it’s still early and we have several months until Christmas but... As we’re starting to get our first festive advertisements, I’m hoping you will forgive me for planting a little seed with you now... I wanted to remind you to please, when you can, “support local” on the run up to Christmas - think about the kitchen table businesses that could supply those unique gifts, cards or Christmas puddings... Think about the local trades that could help put your external lights up, tidy the garden, clean your windows/carpets/ovens in readiness for the festive season. Go to see the local panto, play or Christmas fair - better still buy tickets as gifts! Get dressed up, buy a new outfit, pamper yourself... it goes on. I’m in no doubt that most of us do this already without realising just how important it is. It starts and ends with us and together we can make a huge difference to our local economy and community, let’s do this CM21’ers!

university of the third age wide range of groups & activities at Sawbridgeworth u3a Sawbridgeworth U3A continues to grow with a wide range of groups. The photography group meets once a month on a Monday from 10.00 until 12 noon. Each month the group chooses a particular aspect of photography. Last month it was decided to examine in more detail features of the camera, in particular at aperture priority, and the task was to produce a photo with something in sharp focus but with a blurred background. There are members on hand to explain in simple terms what all this means. Some of the group own quite complex cameras while others have simple point and shoot. However all members produced some high quality results. If you are interested in photography why not come and join us. Her are just a few of the results.

CENTRAL SURGERY SAWBRIDGEWORTH Flu season is approaching...
Most people who get the flu recover after a week or two, but some develop life-threatening complications such as pneumonia, nerve or brain damage. You are more likely to be at risk from the complications of flu if you are in one of the ‘at risk’ groups and your body is already weakened.
How do I avoid getting flu?
The best way to avoid getting flu is to have a flu jab during the Autumn - usually between October and November - each year. The Flu vaccination is free of charge for people in the ‘at risk’ groups.
Flu vaccination is especially important if:
• You are aged 65 or • You have had a stroke or TIA (mini stroke) • You have reduced immunity • You are the main Carer for an elderly or disabled person • You have diabetes • You have chronic heart disease • You have chronic kidney disease • You have chronic liver disease • You have chronic lung disease • You are pregnant If you fall into any of these ‘at risk’ categories, please contact the Surgery to make an appointment for a Flu Jab. Flu vaccinations will be available from the end of September at Central Surgery. Don’t forget to book yours! Bell Street Sawbridgeworth Herts CM2 19AQ Tel: 01279 603180

war memorial fundraising event seeing it through The amazing and moving story of the home front in East Herts during the First World War What should you do in a Zeppelin raid? Why did women battle to be in the land army? How could conkers conquer the Kaiser? Find out in a new play which tells the littleknown stories of the home front in 1914-18, from the words of the extraordinary men, women and children who saw it through. Seeing It Through is a new play from professional community theatre company Pins & Feathers Productions, in association with Hertford Theatre. Researched and written by three East Herts writers – Emma Blowers, Kate Miller and Erin Thompson – it portrays a time of unprecedented upheaval, loss, change and opportunity in the towns and villages of East Hertfordshire. In the play, five actors play a wide range of characters, as we follow their lives through the war, while the Hertfordshire Mercury newspaper chronicles the losses and victories at the front, and the debates and controversies at home. Musicians on stage perform songs from the period, adding to the atmosphere. An entertaining and fast-paced show, Seeing It Through is suitable for all, including children aged 8 upwards.

This event has been organised by Sawbridgeworth Town Council to raise money for the refurbishment of the Town’s War Memorial. Sawbridgeworth has a very active and supportive WWI Commemoration group and a working party has been concentrating on adding to the sum of £4k that was reserved by former Councillor and Mayor Mr Barry Hodges. The War Memorial, found in the churchyard of Great St Mary, has badly weathered over the years and many of the names detailed on it are no longer legible. The Town Council and WWI Commemoration Group hope to raise enough extra money to get the refurbishment completed by the end of the Town’s 4 years of commemoration in 2018. Please support their endeavours and make this a sell out show!
