HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe november edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION
CONNECTION
This edition marks our 2nd anniversary of serving the Sawbridgeworth and surrounding areas! [Sings] Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us... the time has flown hasn’t it! I sincerely hope you find our little publication as useful as you did the first time you received it! So now seems like an opportune time to remind you about us, well specifically me. I was born and raised in Harlow, I’m a school governor, trustee for a local charity and volunteer! When I have some spare time (smiles!) I produce this and 2 other community & business magazines across Herts & Essex.
november 2016 ISSUE 25
CONTENTS ■ FEATURES & ARTICLES 6 Pub & Cafe Walks
The reason I do this, aside from the contribution to the household bills, is that I am passionate about all things local. I know I “bang on about it” but for me, it starts with us helping and supporting each other locally... the “big boys” have big budgets most of those that you see in this magazine do not or, have no budget at all. That’s why the “Community Pages”, “What’s On” and all local editorial are free of charge... So, please do take advantage of these pages, get in touch and use them to promote your school, group or charity and don’t forget to support your local businesses too!

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
AUTUMN FENS This day trip to Cambridgeshire starts with a ride on the world’s longest guided busway to a watery nature reserve and ends with tea in the picturesque market town of St Ives. Catch bus A, B or C from stop 9 outside Cambridge railway station and get off at Fen Drayton Lakes. Walk back towards Cambridge a few meters and turn left along lane. Look out, around dusk, for huge flocks (murmurations) of starlings. Keep straight, with lakes behind hedges on either side, until you reach River Great Ouse. Turn left and walk for two miles with water on right, emerging eventually onto a concrete lane. Turn left, then right on road and right again into Jones Boatyard. Walk clockwise around marina until you reach bridge with steps. Turn left and left again through wooden gate. Follow path under main road and walk along embankment beyond to road. Turn right over picturesque bridge to find River Tearooms in an old, half-timbered house. The bus station, to return to Cambridge, is straight on along Bridge Street and then right along Crown Street. LOCATION: Fen Drayton Distance: About 3 miles refreshments:

Parndon Mill: present arts A hub of creativity
The Gallery at Parndon Mill presents a series of exhibitions of fine art and crafts by skilled and distinguished artists. During the Christmas period, the exhibition PRESENT ARTS maintains the same high standard, but the emphasis is on works of art which are affordable. The artists who have studios at the Mill are represented along with regular exhibitors of paintings, prints, sculpture, calligraphy, ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles and metalwork. Several artists new to The Gallery will also be included in the exhibition which will be a feast for the eye and is a great opportunity to acquire a unique and special present, something new for the home, individual cards, or even decorations for the Christmas tree. where: the gallery at

local business people in person Name and Business Faye Brownjohn and I own and teach at Pole Train Fitness. Where do you live? Church Langley, Harlow but originally from Enfield. I moved Harlow with my husband 9 years ago. What’s your favourite local shop? New Mexico Restaurant (can we call that a shop?!) Fantastic food, fantastic prices and fantastic staff! What’s your favourite local venue? Body Active Gym. The gym is my second home! What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? It’s such a quaint little town - so beautiful. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love fitness and exercise, so I’m likely to be in the gym if I’m not working. I set up my business because... Fitness is an industry I love. I count myself lucky to
be able to get out of bed everyday and actually want to go to work. I’d been out of the fitness industry for about 10 years following a career break. However, once I took up Pole Fitness myself, I realised how much I missed teaching. It was the right time for me to get back into it. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? Deciding to move Pole Train Fitness to a bigger and better venue. We move on 1st November and our new location opens up fantastic new opportunities for Pole Train and its members. Exciting times! Favourite one liner or saying? “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you”. This is a powerful statement and so true. You need to work hard to reach goals - fitness or otherwise. Put the effort in and you will reap the rewards. Life isn’t easy, but it’s what you make it.
Pole Train is a way to silence all of those voices that tell me I can't or I’m not good enough. It's about escaping life's worries and setting myself challenges. It's about freedom, strength, progress and friendship. - Toni Howard, Pole Train Fitness Member

a mayor’s life funky shoes and all that by David Royle
When I became mayor in May Councillor Eric Buckmaster told me (a) that it was a privilege and (b) that I’d enjoy it. He was right: it’s been a great privilege in particular to get to know our schools from pre-nursery to secondary and discuss closer links with the town council and with each other. Thus we hope to set up a townwide school council with representatives from each school and with the facilitating support of senior Leventhorpe students. We will come up with achievable projects the group can take on for the benefit of our community. I particularly enjoyed seeing schools (teachers, parents and children) so enthusiastically and positively embracing the Sawbo Travel Challenge week at the end of September and the Town Walk on 1 October. Each day pupils came to school in something green, in trainers, in a hat and in ‘funky’ shoes (see Mandeville funky shoes below) as well as walking, cycling, scooting to schools instead of driving. The Town Walk was a great success and well supported thanks to the hard work of my town council colleagues and members of the sustainable journeys group. We ran out of bug buddies at each selfie spot! Many thanks to all involved: Congregational Church, Sawbridgeworth Rotary, school, parents and children, town, district and county councils. We will be reviewing those events; we need to build on that success and see what more we can do to make our community safer, cleaner, heathier.

Fancy a walk? Bishop’s Stortford & District Footpaths Association By Daphne Wallace-Jarvis for BSDFA
Help! We are struggling to find walk leaders. Do you have a walk you would like to do? Maybe I can help - I cannot research a walk myself at the moment as I still only have one good hand but I am willing to accompany you and assist you in researching a walk - talk to me. You need to physically walk the walk beforehand so that you are familiar with the ground conditions, have a suitable map, and compass and remember that a group is much slower than one person walking alone or with a friend, and, that climbing over a style takes an inordinate amount of time for a group to negotiate! To lead a walk is really not daunting. November now, traditionally a soggy grey and ‘muggy’ month. do not despair it is not always so. And, you will enjoy yourselves. So, we start at Pig Lane. This is a good car park with loads of parking right down on the banks of the canalised River Stort. The next start is from the Pishiobury car park, again part of the River Stort flood plain, off the A1184 and between the High Wych road and Pishiobury Drive.

The BSDFA has been rather tied up during the summer, challenging Network Rail’s decision to close a huge number of Public Rights Of way (PROWs) over the railway line from London to Cambridge. If this happens and suitable quality alternative routes are not proposed or viable, this will severely curtail a large number

IT’s your community
policing our local community advice from Hertfordshire police... How to avoid becoming a victim of fraud and telephone scams Many Hertfordshire residents have lost large sums of money after they followed instructions given to them by fraudsters posing as either police officers or bank officials over the phone. As average life expectancy increases, we have a growing number of older residents within our communities. While most reported frauds involve younger people as victims, some frauds or scams are particularly targeted at older people. Many older residents have accrued savings or receive regular income from pensions, so some criminals target this. Each month, Hertfordshire residents report more than 400 frauds, Around 100 of these involve persons over the age of 60. Luckily, most are reports where the intended victim spotted the scam before losing any money but around 35 fraud reports each month involve a financial loss to a victim aged 60 or over. Treat unexpected phone calls with scepticism. Fraudsters often claim to be officials and can seem very genuine but may not be who they claim to be. Callers may claim to be police officers advising you of criminal activity around your bank account. Genuine police or bank staff would never ask you to withdraw cash from your account and they would never ask you for your 4 digit PIN number. If a caller asks you to type in
20
your bank PIN number into your handset DON’T – fraudsters can use technology to identify numbers. Genuine computer firms will not call unexpectedly to help fix your computer. Fraudsters make these calls to steal from you or damage your computer with harmful software. Computer firms do not request credit card information to validate copies of Windows or other software. A common fraud is the ‘phoney police caller’. You receive a phone call from the ‘police’. They give you a name and the name of the police station they are calling from (usually a London based station). They ask you to ring back to get validation that the call is genuine but keep the line open so when you hang up, you unwittingly reconnect to the fraudsters who will pretend to be the police switchboard to validate the fraud. Always use a different phone or check the line has disconnected by ringing someone you know and whose voice you would recognise. You can opt out of many cold calls by registering with the Telephone Preference Service on 0845 070 0707. Don’t be afraid to put the phone down with a brief ‘no thank you’ and NEVER give personal information such as your date of birth or bank details to unexpected callers. Please pass this message far and wide, particularly if you have elderly and/or vulnerable neighbours.
