HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe december edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION

CONNECTION

I’m humming Christmas carols as I write this month’s letter, not so strange except I’m writing it in the middle of November! For the past 2 weeks my poor daughter has been woken by my singing carols... I guess you could say I’m a tad excited but then I think, as you get older the excitement is all in the preparation and anticipation... Thank you to our fabulous local ministers who took the time out of their busy schedules to answer, what has now become, our “traditional” Christmas question. This year they were asked how they would be spending their Christmas... A simple enough question with very insightful answers.

christmas charity Quiz for sale What is it? A take away quiz is now on sale. It is on the theme of the Festive Season (as was the one we did in 2010) and so it is called the ‘Festive Season Quiz Part II’. Most of the questions are cryptic clues or anagrams although some are (relatively!) straightforward. The answer to each one is a word relating in some way to the Festive Season. To help you we even provide a list of all the possible answers so all you have to do is match the word to the clue. The closing date for the quiz is not until Monday 6th February 2017, so it is the ideal thing to do with your family and friends over Christmas and the New Year. You could also use copies as Christmas presents – they would make unusual, cheap and hopefully interesting stocking fillers.

What is it in aid of? All profits from the quiz will be sent to the Mildmay Mission Hospital and, in particular, its work supporting children in Uganda who have HIV/Aids. (Last year’s quiz raised £1609.90 for this project!) Where can I get a copy? Copies of the quiz are on sale at £2 and are available from: Nisa (formerly The Tuck Shop), Bell Street, Sawbridgeworth Or contact: Steve and Pam Robertson, 10 Bell Mead, Sawbridgeworth, Herts CM21 9ES. That would have to be the Green Room as they stock some very classy gifts. What’s your favourite local venue? Most definitely The Straw Hat. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? a mayor’s life Sustainable journey awards by David Royle

Following on from the highly successful Sawbo Travel Challenge week at the end of September and the Town Walk on 1 October, I was glad to be part of the awards ceremony in the Council Chamber on October. All schools did really well and the percentage increase in non-car journeys to school was impressive. All schools achieved over 80 per cent some over 90. The overall winners were Reedings but all schools (including Mandeville, Fawbert and Barnard and Spellbrook) attended the ceremony (see photos) and received awards for participating. We will be meeting again in January to plan ‘sustainable journey’ further events. By the time you read this we will also have held the first of a new set of town-wide school council meetings (including High Wych) in the Council Chamber to increase understanding of what the Council does but also to discuss possible community projects schools can be involved in. Leventhorpe senior students are facilitating. It is a great opportunity to involve younger citizens in improving our environment and planning for the future.

Reedings, the overall winners, with me and Lindsey Day, Senior Road safety Officer at HCC

we asked our local ministers… how will you be spending your Christmas?

Frances Arnold

Gary Hanson

parish church of Great St Mary, Sawbridgeworth

Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church

I have always loved Christmas Eve and I particularly look forward to Christmas Eve in Sawbridgeworth. We have the Crib Service and the Midnight Service in Church, of course. In between, the Sawbridgeworth and District Rotary Club hosts the wonderful Christmas Eve on Fair Green. I have never experienced a half hour quite like it. Just before 6.30pm, I will pull on my wellies (over an extra pair of thick socks), grab my torch and set off to Fair Green. Although the roads are closed, I have to squeeze my way through the throngs of people who have gathered to sing traditional carols. We are accompanied by Great St Mary’s Church Choir and Epping Forest Brass Band. It doesn’t matter that it’s already dark – the words of the carols are projected on the side of one of the houses! It is a great privilege to bless the people of the town on this holy night with the hope that Christ will fill us ‘with peace and goodwill’. Rotary will take a collection for local charities, so this most enjoyable evening helps others too. Come if you can. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Christmas.

16

I think it’s fair to say that I will spend the Christmas season getting excited! My love of Christmas is well known in Church. I often cause more than a few sighs when I start mentioning it in November - even more groans at the bad Christmas jokes. My excitement isn’t just about presents, chocolate and turkey, though. It’s about being able to share the most AMAZING story of how God’s only Son, Jesus Christ, entered human history as a baby in a manger in Bethlehem. A baby who became a man, but no ordinary man: the Saviour of the world! He would give His life on the cross to save us, if we put our faith in Him. I love to tell that story during assemblies in local schools, at our Carols by Candlelight service (18th December 6:30pm, all welcome!) or during our Christmas day service. For me, whilst I will be spending Christmas with family and friends, in reality, my Christmas will be spent sharing this awesome and precious moment in human history, when God came to down to save the lost, with anyone that wants to hear it. God Bless and have a wonderful Christmas from all at Sawbridgeworth Congregational Church.

IT’s your community

policing our local community advice from Hertfordshire police... With 25th December fast approaching, our thoughts turn to shopping, shopping and more shopping! It can be a hectic and very stressful time of year so I wanted to take a few minutes to remind you all to stay alert and stay safe when out Christmas shopping. • When using a cash machine, remember to be vigilant and shield your PIN • Never leave shopping on view in your vehicles • Keep bags zipped, buttoned or clasped shut and keep purses out of sight (purse bells available – email me and I will send them out to you if you would like some) • Stay alert in crowded areas • If you use a handbag with a strap, wear it across your body and not just over one shoulder so it is more secure. • Men should keep their wallet in a front pocket rather than in their back pocket, making it harder for a thief to slip their hand in unnoticed.

If you are shopping online, remember before entering payment card details on a website, ensure that the link is secure, in three ways: • There should be a padlock symbol in the browser window frame, which appears when you attempt to log in or register. Be sure that the padlock is not on the page itself ... this will probably indicate a fraudulent site. • The web address should begin with ‘https://’. The ‘s’ stands for ‘secure’. • If using the latest version of your browser, the address bar or the name of the site owner will turn green. If you have any issues over the festive period, ring 101.
