THE
WELCOME
CM21
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe february edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION How’s your year going so far? I’ve been making plans both personally and for my business (it’s ongoing, I was NEVER going to get it finished in January!). One recurring theme that keeps coming up is that if you don’t plan, write and REVIEW your goals (wishes or dreams!) they are less likely to happen. Here’s some interesting statistics* that you may or may not have come across before: • 80% of Americans claim that they don’t have goals • 16% of them have goals, but they don’t write them down • Only 3% actually have written goals, but they don’t review them regularly • Only 1% has written goals and they review them regularly, and these are among the highest achievers in the US So, I’m planning for change and good things this year. I’m making a list of my goals, breaking each one down into smaller, achievable steps and I’ll be revisiting them until they become reality! I’m determined to be one of the 1%; I’m on a mission! And now that I’ve “put it out there” I’m even more accountable to make sure it happens!

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Cakes and Crocuses The popular Rosey Lea café makes a great base for a ramble through Stortford’s flowering rural fringes. From the café, accessible via a long drive off the Hadham Road, start walking back along tarmac lane towards the entrance. Turn sharp right by silver silos and right again on bridleway. Follow track behind Wickham Hall and turn left at little lodge house. Take next path right and follow it, winding alongside fields until an arrow points right; double back across fields, over stiles and head for brick arch under bypass. Walk past woods and follow path, eventually emerging onto Dane O’Coys. Turn right along road, cross Cricketfield Lane and continue, cross again to left, and go on along Maple Avenue. Turn right along Maze Green Road and follow Hertfordshire Way signs along paths through houses, across bypass, along field edges and, finally, right again past budding woods. Follow path under Hadham Road and leave Hertfordshire Way to continue straight along daffodil-lined drive of Hadham Lodge. Keep on, with pond on left and house on right, through pretty paddock and past more woods. When trees on left end, follow surfaced track right towards Wickham Hall. Just before you reach buildings, turn right on footpath to return to start. LOCATION: Wickham Hall

a mayor’s life local history and town walks by David Royle
I made a good start to the New Year by joining both Fawbert and Barnard Year 2 classes on their town walk at the beginning of term, as part of their Street Detectives topic. The walkers were well supported by teachers and parent volunteers and was an impressive logistical exercise, with very careful attention to health and safety. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the day coincided with resurfacing work on Knight Street, which I suspect was as fascinating as finding local landmarks! I also added to my knowledge of the town and its history. It reminded me of the importance of celebrating and recording our town history and of the role schools have in that. All schools do some kind of local history project and several do town walks. Fawbert and Barnard (two historical figures themselves) will produce a model of the town as they envisage it and I hope we can display it if it is portable enough (if not photographs) at the Town Annual Meeting on 10 April, along with other schools’ project material. So watch this space for a new vision of the town…

in person Name and Business Andy Peasey and I own and run Ruggerbugs. Where do you live? Hatfield Heath. What’s your favourite local venue? I am a little torn! I love Bellwaris take away as they are fantastic. As a venue, I would say the Orange Tree is the best for me for the atmosphere it creates. What’s your favourite local shop? It has to be Hardsoft computers who are my IT support and supply team! Ben has got me out of a few holes recently. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? A nice walk/bike ride along the river. What do you like doing when you’re not
working? Spending time with my family and also playing golf badly! I set up my business because... I wanted to encourage children in the area to engage with sport from an early age and have the opportunity to take part in the best sport in the world. Rugby offers so much to parents, players and supporters alike. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? My company was awarded a Gold Accreditation to the Children’s Activities Association in a matter of 3 weeks when it can take up to 3 years. This gives parents the peace of mind that our activity is age appropriate, safe and all our procedures have been independently assessed and approved.

LOCALs that launch Having recently moved back to CM21, Claire Towerzey of Claire T Zumba is looking forward to introducing her Zumba classes across the area in 2017...
When did you set up your business? I qualified in June 2011 but I went full time in Sept 2011. I teach Zumba; Latin fitness dance classes in four styles: Zumba (High Impact), Zumba Gold (Low impact), Zumba Kidz and Zumba Chair. Experience in the business? Originally I studied drama at Harlow College and Liverpool University but my love and passion for dance comes from Latin music as I have been dancing and teaching salsa for over 10 years. What work did you do before? I was an estate agent in the city. What made you decide to set up your own business? My old job was very stressful and long hours. I wanted a better quality of life. Not only does Zumba allow me to be active but it allows me to meet so many great people and it allows me to spread my love of dancing and teach people how easy and fun it is. Originally I was planning to take a year off of my old job but Zumba just took off and it completely stole my heart. I am definitely more a crazy Zumba lady nowadays. What has been the most valuable lesson learnt so far? Never judge anyone. I teach children from 4 years old up to my oldest gold member who is 93 and I

realized very early on that people can achieve so much more than they think they can, myself very much included! What hurdles have you faced? Injuries can be a hazard of the job. At my peak I was teaching 16 classes a week, but I had to scale those back to recover from ongoing injuries. What has been the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? Moving. I recently moved back to CM21 from East London and all of my old contacts and classes are there, so in a way I am starting again. What has been the most rewarding aspect? Seeing people get healthy and grow. Seeing people lose stones of weight is wonderful, but also seeing people’s confidence and self esteem grow, is just as rewarding. Do you hope to expand your business? Yes. I previously had contracts with various councils, schools and community and care centres, so I am hoping to replicate this again locally. How should potential customers contact you? Either call or email me to talk about new classes or just pop along to my classes as and when you can. Everyone and anyone is always welcome!

Our CHARITy of the year 2017 streets2homes In December CM Connection Magazines ran a Facebook competition asking people to vote for their favourite local charity. The winner would become our first ever “Charity of the Year” receiving additional exposure from us in terms of support and publicity within our publications and also receive a donation of £100, in lieu of Christmas cards. The charities were put forward by our advertisers and the top 5 nominated were: • Grove Cottage • Herts & Essex Community Farm • PACT for Autism • Streets2Homes • St Elizabeth’s Centre It was a very exciting and a close run thing with the lead changing several times. On the last day of voting it was neck and neck but with a last minute surge of votes (or FB likes!) Streets2Homes pipped St Elizabeth’s to the post to become our charity of the year 2017! The whole campaign reached over 11k people in less than a week, that’s 11k people that now know a little more about each of the charities shortlisted, which is good thing in our book! Rest assured that we will continue to support all other local charities, and non-salaried organisations as we have always done, and you never know it could be your favourite group that becomes our next “Charity of the Year”!

Who are Streets2Homes? Streets2Homes is a charity based in Harlow, Essex and we manage a day centre which seeks to reach out to and help homeless people. We provide a safe and friendly environment in which we can assist them in a number of ways, including finding accommodation. The demand for housing in this area always outstrips availability so it can take time to find suitable accommodation; we are always looking for good landlords to work with us. The day centre provides a place to access housing advice, social contact, training sessions, employment advice, health services, help with claiming benefits, washing facilities, food, clothing, general guidance and support. In 2016 we have seen 362 new clients and dealt with 146 cases over the telephone, providing advice, guidance and practical solutions. Of the 508 people we assisted the following: • 72 into the private rented sector • 57 into other form of rented accommodation (this group includes lodging with friends/family etc.) • 20 successful referrals to supported accommodation • 3 were housed by the local authority • 25 were reconnected to the area they had an established link with • And the best part…85 were prevented from becoming homeless through mediation or intervention.

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING CARAMELISED ONION & GOATS’ CHEESE PIZZA 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced 2 tsp brown sugar 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced 5 cherry tomatoes, halved
THIS
IS A TASTY ALTERNATIVE TO THE CLASSIC CHEESE AND TOMATO PIZZA. SERVE WITH A SIMPLE MIXED GREEN SALAD DRESSED WITH BALSAMIC VINEGAR AND OLIVE OIL.
1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. 2. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. 3. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. 4. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown. TIP: Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano

Harlow sea welcome Aboard new recruits & helpers Did you know there has been a thriving sea cadet unit in Harlow for over 50 years? We meet every Tuesday and Thursday. Junior Cadets 10-12, Sea Cadets 12-18 and Marine Cadets 13-18. At the Remembrance Sunday Service in the Town Park last year, you would have seen our cadets proudly on parade. A central part of our calendar – taking part in the service is very important, the cadets get to show their community a face of local youth - many believe sadly to be missing these days. One of our many aims is to try and install a greater sense of community within the cadets. We passionately believe in our cadets, actively encouraging them to achieve their potential. It’s the combination of Royal Navy tradition within a structured regime bringing together their energy and drive that has kept the unit going for over five decades. Our cadets go on to become many things in life, not necessarily anything to do with the military. Being a cadet
20
teaches our young people self-confidence, team work, better coping mechanisms and life skills. In addition to learning Seamanship – our cadets get involved with five a side football, swimming, cooking, shooting, sailing, we also offer weekends away with other local and national units. In summer months they also participate in boating activities. There are also many weekend boating, swimming or camping activities too. We are also active out in the community; the cadets regularly help with events held by St Clare Hospice, Cancer Research and both Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford branches of the British Legion, helping to raise money for the local community. As a charity we do not get financial help from the MOD so are self-funding. Fund raising is an important part of the unit management team’s job; it’s also one of the most fun. As well as welcoming new cadets we would really like to welcome new volunteers to strengthen our team
