THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe April edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION As I type it is absolutely glorious out there - blue, cloudless skies. My daughter has come home from school, red-cheeked and puffed out from the heat and walking - feeling proud that she’s managed to beat her 19-minute record. I, on the other hand have been limited to admiring the spring weather from afar - well from my window, to be exact. To make matters worse, my “step” count is dire (yep, I am a slave to my Fitbit!). On the weeks that I go to print, I’m lucky if I make 2 or 3 thousand steps - way off the recommended 10k steps a day. I’ll have to make up for it tomorrow... what’s the betting it rains (smiles!). Suffice it to say, this edition is a full one! I’ve just about managed to squeeze everyone in, which I’m really pleased about. It feels like the Town is really busying for the spring/summer. We have open days for the Bowling club, the tennis club would love you to come for a visit too and the Football Club are looking for women aged 16+ to start a ladies team! There are exhibitions, music, movies, community events - an Easter Trail and the May Fayre to look forward too... so much! We also have new advertisers hoping to entice you with their wares, services and products - please think about supporting local before looking further afield! Local resident, Hannah, has recently launched her new business, The Dog House, I’d like to wish her all the very best as she starts her new business venture, turn to page 15 to find out more and for a discount voucher! Happy Easter! Until next month,

Lorraine

a mayor’s life street detectives; cabaret; dog fouling and litter by David Royle

I visited Fawbert and Barnard to see the town models the Year 2 classes had produced as part of their street detectives topic: from helter skelters to roller discos to a jerk chicken shop, (vertical) swimming pool and hotel for children only! I expect to display some of the models at the Town Annual meeting on 10 April and before and after that date.

Excellent Cabaret on 4 March from the Bishop’s Stortford Cabaret group at the Memorial Hall; a very talented group of people who gave their time in support of my charity, St Elizabeth’s Centre Much Hadham. Thanks to everyone who came along. We made £875! More seriously: dog fouling continues to be a problem, especially around our schools and can be a health risk, apart from the unpleasantness of it on shoes, push chairs etc. East Herts are keen to work with the Town Council on this and a group of parents are already on the case. I hope we can also tag this on to the schools’ Spring in your Step day on 20 March and the ‘walk to school’ week at the end of September and come up with a pupil poster campaign (FandB has already done this). You can report offenders to EHDC Environmental Services on 01279 655261 or operations.admin@eastherts.gov. uk. Ideally they’d like precise information on

time, location, description of dog/owner, car (if relevant). Litter is maybe public enemy number 2 in certain spots and I’d like to put together a group of volunteers for occasional litter picks. Let me know if you are interested.

Ash Valley quilters 6th exhibition by Jackie Nash

Our quilt group started in 1996 and we meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 7.30 to 9.30pm at the Memorial Hall in Sawbridgeworth (next to the library) where we have professional speakers on patchwork related topics, practical workshops and other events throughout the year. We run patchwork classes for beginners and workshops on more complicated techniques for the more experienced quilter, so the group covers a wide range of expertise. At our exhibition, we will have lots of quilts, bags and other items on display, all made by our members. We will also have a sales table with small quilts, handmade fabric items such as toys, bags, storage items, and lots more; a trader selling fabrics and haberdashery, a book and magazine stall, a charity raffle (the first prize is the quilt on the right), tombola, demonstrations of quilting techniques, and tea and cake, all for a £3.50 entry fee (children free). There is disabled access and plenty of parking available nearby. There will be lots to interest everyone, whether you are a keen quilter, just like to admire what others make or perhaps buy some gifts at the same time. Tel:

LOCALs that launch In February of this year Hannah Ledger started her professional dog grooming service based in Sawbridgeworth. Here she tells us more about The Dog House...

Where did you qualify/study? I studied City and Guilds Level 3 Dog Grooming at The Collage of Animal Welfare in Cambridge and passed with distinction. What made you decide to set up your own business? For many years I dreaded getting up in the mornings to attend the usual 9-5 in an office, so I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my dream of working with animals. I went back to college, got a job in a dog grooming salon and now I have my very own dog grooming business. Nowadays I can’t wait to go to work in the mornings; I love every minute of it. What makes you different from other dog groomers? I understand that dogs are not just pets, they are members of your family. At The Dog House I treat your dog as if they are my own, treat’s and cuddles

at the ready. The welfare of your dog is at the forefront of everything I do. Comfy beds, toys and water are readily available; not a cage in sight. Do you work full or part time? The Dog House is open Monday-Friday 8am5.30pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. Appointments outside these hours are negotiable. Do you have any dogs? I have a chocolate cockapoo called Thornton, he is featured below in the bottom left hand corner of my advert; isn’t he handsome? He is my best friend, if I’m not working we go for long walks together through the local countryside. How should potential customers contact you? To find out more information on the professional one to one dog grooming service that I provide for for all breeds, please see the details below.

Sawbridgeworth town Twinning Association Twinned with Bry-sur-Marne Words by Paul Avontuur Would you be willing to host one or more French visitors during this year’s town twinning event? Sawbridgeworth Town Twinning Association is looking for new guest families for an extended weekend in September. Sawbridgeworth has been twinned with Bry-surMarne, a small town close to Paris, since 1974. During this time, many local and international friendships have developed through the annual exchange between their residents. One visit takes place each year, alternating between Bry-sur-Marne and Sawbridgeworth, and includes time spent with a host family, an excursion and an informal dinner. In recent years the popularity of the exchange with our French partners is larger than our 60 members can accommodate and you could help us to receive more guests. Having joined the Association ourselves only two years ago, my wife and I have been made to feel very welcome on both sides of the Channel and enjoyed the experience of seeing Paris through the eyes of our French hosts. The French family we met through the exchange was very nicely matched to our own and shared similar interests to us. They were very easy to get along with and we already

look forward to seeing them again this year. And, in case you are worried whether your French is up to hosting, they spoke good English as do the majority of our French guests. And, if you have some French language skills, the exchange is a good opportunity to polish up your French or help your children to polish up theirs. Membership of the Association is free and a major part of the exchange costs are covered through fund raising and a well received council grant. Hosting costs are borne by each host, and are reciprocated by your French guests during the return year; travel costs for the return trip to France are also borne by yourself. Both costs require you to spend around £100 per head per year. If you joined the Association, you would be expected to host a French couple, family or individual between Friday 15th and Sunday 17th September. We would hope that you would enjoy hosting and take part in the return visit in 2018. If you are interested in hosting, or would like more information on the Town Twinning Association, please contact Sally Pribul (Secretary) on the details below.

s need Teenager too... our help

A large proportion of the children we are seeking families for are teenagers. The teenage years can be extremely difficult. I am sure you remember what it was like to be a teenager. You feel like you are the only one, like no one else understands and are often hounded by feelings of insecurity. Imagine how much worse this would be if you could not live with your family. How would you feel? At this critical time in their lives these young adults need guidance, support and understanding, to help them not to get involved in bad behaviours and lifestyles. Teenagers need carers who are reliable, patient and trustworthy; they need to know where they stand. Foster carers need to listen, be someone to talk to and help them to make sense of their worries.

Our chosen charity streets2homes Sleepout 2017: Awareness and annual fundraising event Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes Every year in spring we hold our annual fundraising event. It’s a SLEEPOUT designed to raise awareness and funds for the Streets2Homes day centre for the homeless and vulnerably housed. We assist by helping with meeting basic needs and support to rebuild lives by accessing accommodation and improving opportunities. This year’s event is taking place on 26th May and will take place in the church grounds of St Marys-atLatton, Harlow, CM20 2JP. All monies raised will go to Streets2Homes to support the homeless in Harlow and those that come to us from the surrounding area. Unlike so many who find themselves on the streets, we have the luxury of being able to plan our Sleepout and make sure that we have all the provisions we need. We’ve drawn together a simple fact sheet about the event, to answer some questions should you wish to take part. When does it start? The event starts at 9.30pm and will finish with a hot breakfast at 6.30am in the church hall. Who can take part? Anyone over 18, anyone over 12 as long as a responsible adult who is present, supervises them and they also have their parent’s or guardian’s consent. What to do before the event: Please register by calling Streets2Homes 01279 430011 or by emailing me at kerrie.eastman@streets2homes.co.uk Find some people to sponsor you for an amount of money. What to bring: Your registration form and your sponsorship form so that we can stamp to certify completion on Saturday morning. A sleeping bag or bags and blankets - bring more rather than

less! Wear warm clothing – layer up! Some like a cardboard-box (waterproofed) for over their head & a sleeping mat. A waterproof groundsheet or heavy plastic that goes both under & over you - vital! What not to bring: Pets, a tent, a football, valuables & CDs, mp3’s or alcohol! Timetable: 9.30-10.30pm - refreshments and introductions, 10.30-11pm - out to sleep, or the church will be open for prayer from 10.30 to 11pm. Parking: There is ample parking around the church people park on the grassed areas around the church. But please, if possible, avoid parking outside people’s homes in The Gowers. There is also plenty of parking in Muskham Road leading to The Gowers. What happens overnight? You sleep in the grounds. Toilets will be open all night. Security will patrol. What happens the next morning? You get up from 6.30am onwards, get your sponsorship form stamped, and, if you wish, have something to eat and drink, a breakfast will be provided. Remove cardboard etc. Leave nothing behind. Then go to a cosy home!! What to do after that: Talk with friends and family about the experience, tell them about Streets2homes and collect your sponsorship money. This event is not for everybody but you can still support us by following the live Facebook streams that we share as the night unfolds. Most importantly we would like your sponsorship, there is no minimum amount, every single penny is most gratefully received. We understand that a local CM23 Magazine publisher will be taking part or you may know someone else to sponsor. We also have a Local Giving page - https://localgiving.org/charity/s2h/ where donations can be made online.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING RICOTTA STUFFED CHICKEN

75g ricotta cheese 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 2 tsp finely grated lemon zest 4 large skinless chicken breast fillets 12 thin-cut rashers streaky bacon 5 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 1tsp Dijon mustard Pinch of sugar

This

recipe is a great way to turn chicken

fillets into something special.

You

can

prepare them a couple of hours in advance

100g baby spinach leaves

and keep covered in the fridge, then simply

2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

cook when needed.

1. Use a sharp knife to make a deep pocket in each chicken fillet, making sure not to cut right the way through. Place the ricotta cheese in a bowl and stir in the thyme leaves and the lemon zest. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Place one-quarter of the ricotta mixture in the pocket of each chicken fillet. Use the back of a knife to stretch the bacon rashers. Wrap 3 rashers around each chicken fillet and secure with a metal skewer. Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C Fan, Gas Mark 4. 3. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken fillets over high heat for 2-3 minutes until the bacon is browned, turning once. Transfer to a roasting tin and cook for 35-40 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Cover and leave in a warm place to rest for 10 minutes. 4. To make the dressing, whisk the remaining oil with the vinegar, mustard and sugar in a small jug and season to taste. Slice each chicken fillet into 6 pieces and arrange on the salad leaves. Scatter over the toasted pine nuts and spoon over the dressing. Serve immediately.

TIP: Instead of ricotta you could use low-fat soft cheese such as

Philadelphia or a mild and creamy goats’ cheese.

art À peel Art group at the arc Words by Jim Peel & John Barnes

How did the group begin? It began life in 1994 when Jim Peel, our teacher, retired from full time work and wanted something to do. Jim had an interest in art from an early age and studied the subject under Anthony Devas ARA, during his evacuation to Sawbridgeworth during WW2. (You can read more about Jim’s time as an evacuee from the book he wrote on the subject, extracts from which were published in CM17 Connection 10th anniversary edition 2005 – 2015.) So Jim started the art group about 22 years ago and some of the original participants are still active in the group today. What do you do? We are essentially a Watercolour Class that learns about the basics of painting. Jim has a particular speciality in teaching about the rules of perspective, not only in the drawing but also in how colour affects the final result, for example warm colours for close subject matter, cooler colours for objects or scenery farther away. We learn how to apply washes, wet on wet and wet on dry paper, depicting clouds and cloud formations, composition and the rule of thirds. Also, we learn about the mixing of colours, the colour wheel, colours that are permanent and those that can be removed or reduced in effectiveness or removed altogether. How does the group operate? Each of us does our own thing in relation to what we paint with Jim offering advice on anything that we are having difficulty with. Occasionally we will have a particular subject or a human model for us all to paint. Many of us

art Group use photographs or magazine pictures as our subject matter. Do you exhibit your work? In times past we have exhibited our work at Artists in the Square, which at one time gathered in the Harlow Town centre. Now we have our own exhibitions, twice annually, in the ARC lasting 2 -3 weeks, which is open to the general public. Often visitors will be invited to vote for the paintings they like best and from those votes we can see the sort of subject that appeals and a “Best in Show” winner. Most years we produce a calendar that includes 40 to 50 paintings completed by the group. From the sales of these calendars we are able to make a donation to the St Clare Hospice, for which they are very grateful.

If you would like to join our class, buy any of our work, or find out more about the class, please contact out tutor Jim Peel on 01279 300793, or come along to one of our meetings and see for yourself who we are and what we do.

Included in this article are a few examples of our paintings selected from the 2017 calendar, we hope you enjoy.

The Art à Peel art group meets on Mondays at 2pm at the Arts and Recreation Centre, St John’s Walk, off Market Street, Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ.

Local sport SAwbridgeworth Town Ladies FC Since the 1999-2000 season until the end of the 2015-2016 season Sawbridgeworth FC had a women’s team associated with the club. However, after the 2015-2016 the women’s section folded. Sawbridgeworth Town has always been at the forefront of women’s football and we would like to regain that position by starting again within the Women’s Pyramid. As a new team Sawbridgeworth Town Ladies FC will start at the lowest point of the pyramid, which is the bottom division within the affiliated County League. We are waiting to hear from the Football Association if they will allow the team to play in the Essex County League rather than Beds & Herts County League to lessen the impact of travelling. As a brand new team, playing in the Women’s open age section, we are looking for players over 16 before 1st August, however if you are 15 you are very welcome to come along but will be unable to play until you turn 16.

This is going to be a major project that will hopefully see Sawbridgeworth Town LFC back where it belongs, playing ladies football at the highest possible level within the next few years. Interested? If you want to know more or would like to have a chat about Sawbridgeworth Town Ladies FC, please get in touch. If you prefer you can send an email or text with the following information: • Your full name, age (date of birth) • If you have played before and the name of your last club • Favoured playing position. Thank you, Dave Dawson Club Vice Chairman, Ladies Manager, FA Qualified coach, CRB Checked.

We will play all our home games at the main Sawbridgeworth Town FC in West Road and we will be training there once a week.
