THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe JUNe edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION

CONNECTION

We are official half way through the year. I know (shakes head), the year is flying by - I actually mentioned the C word last week and have already booked my first Christmas do! But before that, we have our summer to look forward too, assuming we haven’t had it already - do you remember a few months back we had a couple of unseasonally lovely days? You do? Good! Because that may very well have been our summer! Joking aside, summer wouldn’t be summer without local village and school fetes. We have open gardens, festivals, picnics and concerts to tempt us out of our homes too, all of which are detailed in this month’s edition. There really is no excuse to stay indoors and no, you are not allowed to blame the weather. We are British, as long as you have a bag packed for every conceivable weather eventuality, it’ll be fine! Plus, those that have spent months organising said events would be eternally grateful to you! I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 recently (tip if you haven’t seen it, watch to the very, very end - I thought I had but I still missed something!). I mention it because the film is about relationships and primarily that of a father/son/dad. With Father’s day coming up I wanted to acknowledge all those that have “stepped up” to be someone’s dad: “Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad.” Until next month, Lorraine

Our chosen charity streets2homes Why our annual sleepout event is so important Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes

We are still collecting donations from our Sleep Out held on Friday 26th May 2017, which was a huge success. There is still time to show your support for the event and those brave participants who slept out by making a donation online through our local giving page (details below). By doing so, you are helping us to help people like Mr H regain their confidence, dignity and build a future. Mr H’s story is below.

When I became homeless and first arrived at the centre I was scared and unsure of what to do or expect but as soon as I entered I was relieved at what was on offer – I had never been homeless before and hadn’t showered for 2 days and was feeling really low. I got a warm welcome as I walked through the door and immediately felt at ease. After completing some paperwork I was shown where to go to get a drink and shower and asked if I would like something to eat and some clean clothes for which I was very grateful for – they made it feel a little less humiliating, like it was normal. They gave me a tent, sleeping bag and other essentials to get through the night. The more I used the centre the more confident I became. Also after a short time they helped me to find a room and helped me with the deposit and all the forms and even helped me get some bits together. Even though I was housed I still went to the centre to join in the job club and help out at the centre to help others who were in the same boat as I was not too long ago. I managed to get a paid job and had to leave volunteering at the centre and all the ongoing support and help from all at Streets2Homes has given me hope and meaning to carry on without them I am really not sure where I would be.

a mayor’s life mayor’s charity update by David Royle

An excellent civic dinner at the Memorial Hall on 29 April with around 75 people. Thanks to all those who supported my charity and me. Magpie Catering did us proud and we were well entertained by the Friendly Jazz Duo and Glass Onion. Thanks also to Council Officers and staff for organising the event and to all those who donated raffle prizes. I was very glad to support St Elizabeth’s May Fayre exhibition and sale at Tudor House on the following Sunday, thanks to the generosity and community spirit of Peyman Akhondzadeh. Otherwise we have been continuing to host our primary, junior and infants schools in the Council Chamber; each of them will have two visits, one to hear about what the Council does, one for their regular school council meeting. They are fascinated by the gavel, the water cooler and the toilet! I’m struck by how mature they are and the good questions they ask. We need to listen and take note and as far as possible come up with answers as they are our future councillors, mayors and community organisers.

Charity cheque handover date: 19 May at Civic Awards in Town Council Chamber and will be announced in the next edition.

309 Air cadet squadron

air cadets flying high after grants get their flight training plans off the ground After the awarding of grants from the Big Lottery Fund and Stansted Airport Community Trust, the cadets of 309 (Sawbridgeworth) Air Cadet Squadron have this month been presented with a major new training device offering a fully immersive flight simulation experience. The system, purchased and installed after a grant of £9,999 from the Big Lottery Fund, replicates the cockpit of the Royal Air Force Grob Tutor aircraft used to train air cadets and budding military pilots alike. Whilst flying is a core activity of the Air Cadet Organisation, the cost and large number of squadrons bidding for places prohibit it from being any more than a biannual opportunity. To counter this, 309 plan to utilise the newly installed simulator to provide flight training to all their cadets, young and old, enabling them to maximise their time in the air when it comes around.

desks, carpet, cupboards, lights and chairs, coupled with a complete re-decoration make for a fresh, bright and professional learning environment that wouldn’t look out of place in an established flight school. To officially open the new classroom and training equipment, Mayor of Sawbridgeworth David Royle visited the Squadron to see the impact it will have on local youngsters and witness the inaugural flight. Naturally, given the superior flight training received by the Air Cadets, it went down without a hitch.

The installation of the system occurred after a full revamp of one of the Squadron’s classrooms, made possible by a £2,000 grant from Stansted Airport Community Trust. New

policing our local community advice from Herts police... With the evenings staying lighter longer and the weather improving, our thoughts turn to gardening. Sheds and garages have always been easy-pickings for thieves and, whilst the Police are doing everything they can to prevent, deter and detect these offences, home-owners also have a clear part to play if we are to reduce these thefts and keep your possessions where they should be – in your shed or garage. Please take a moment to read through these ten top tips and implement as many of the suggestions as you can… 1. Site the shed as close to your house as possible – This will make it harder for the thief to break-in without being noticed. 2. Add a perimeter of crunchy gravel around the shed or garage, and plant some nice thorny plants under the windows. Pyracantha, Berberis and Common Hawthorn are popular and effective. 3. Obscure shed and garage windows with net curtains or whitewash - A burglar seldom steals what he can’t see. 4. If your garage has a rear door, fit it with a 5-lever mortise lock certified to BS 3621. Try to do the same for your shed, but if the door is not suitable, fit a “close-shackled” padlock instead and ensure that the fittings are bolted into the shed, not just screwed. 5. For garage rear doors, fit hinge-bolts in the back edge of the door. These prevent a thief from opening it by removing the hinges. 6. For sheds, if the door isn’t suitable for hinge

18

bolts, make the hinges harder to remove by bolting them to the door or by drilling out the screw heads. 7. If your garage has an up-and-over door, you can secure it from the inside by drilling a hole in each runner, just above the wheel, (with the door is in the closed position). Snap a padlock through each hole and you now have a simple device to block the wheel’s movement and stop the door opening. 8. Secure cycles, mowers, strimmers, hedgetrimmers etc with a lockable steel cable and ground anchor. - Thieves like to work fast, so slow them down! 9. Visibly mark removable items. Thieves seldom steal property that can be traced back to its owner. Visible marking makes it obvious to a thief that the item is traceable. We recommend house name/number and postcode. 10. Fit an alarm. If you have a house alarm, you should extend it to cover your garage. Otherwise, you can always invest in a simple battery-operated alarm to protect your shed and garage. If you have any items of value i.e power/garden tools, garden furniture etc then remember to register them on the free online property register www.immobilise.com PCSO 6666 Amanda Higham Bishop’s Stortford Safer Neighbourhood Team covering Sawbridgeworth

great & little hallingbury flower show celebrating its 79th year It’s amazing to think that the Great and Little Hallingbury Flower Show is now in its 79th year. It is a unique event, which celebrates village life and offers a whole host of family entertainment, shopping and delicious food and drink. We usually welcome about 1,000 people each year. As many of you will know our visitors love looking around the Exhibitors’ Pavillion, which contains the finest blooms, vegetables and fruit our local growers have to offer. For enthusiastic photographers there is a photography section as well as classes for flower arrangements, cookery, needlework and handicraft. We also have a whole section of 10 classes for children ranging from a creature made from vegetables to collage and decorated biscuits to handwriting. There is a section for W.I.s or other similar groups or why not try your hand at making a Scarecrow. The more entries the better and there is something for everyone so please do enter something. There are cups for the winners in each class. One of our hard working committee has been busy buying up all the local supplies of pretty, old fashioned tea cups and saucers so the Vintage Tea Tent will have a new look. It is always a very popular meeting spot for families to regroup and enjoy some tea and a slice of delicious homemade cakes. For the lunch crowd we have a Hog Roast serving local pork in buns and a veggie option. There are main arena events including dancing, music from the Bishop’s Stortford Ukulele Society and the famous and hard fought tug of war between the two villages of Great Hallingbury and Little Hallingbury.

There are trade stands around the showground selling plants and other wares and lots of fun activities for all the family such as face painting, hook a duck, and a bouncy castle, plus more. It is a great day out for all the family and everyone is welcome.

We are currently really interested in making the shopping experience even better so if you or a friend have lovely things to sell then we would like to hear from them. Also, if anyone would like to volunteer to help on the day and run a stall, that would be much appreciated. Schedules are available at the Little Hallingbury Post Office and on the website or if you contact us at oriel@hallingburyflowershow.com we can email you a pdf. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, turning frequently until browned all over. 3. Remove the meatballs from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 5 minutes. Pour in the passatta and add the sundried tomato paste and sugar. Bring to the boil. Return the meatballs to the pan and stir in 150ml water. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, adding a little more water if necessary. Season to taste. 4. Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of lightly salted water for 12 to 14 minutes or according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Serve the meatballs and sauce with the spaghetti and top with grated Parmesan. Garnish with fresh basil sprigs. TIP: Give the meatballs extra flavour by adding some chopped black olives, 2 tbsp Parmesan cheese or 2 tsp drained and rinsed baby capers.

st clare hospice open gardens bbc one show gardener set to open st clare hospice garden St Clare Hospice’s 23rd annual Open Gardens weekend has been given a boost by BBC One Show gardener Christine Walkden, who has lent her green-fingered hands to the cause. Christine, who is a Patron of the Hastingwood-based charity, will be officially opening the hospice’s own garden to the public for the two-day horticultural event. The ever-popular gardening event was founded in 1994 by a group of hospice supporters in Harlow, led by Anne Gould. Held every year in June, the event offers the perfect opportunity for lovers of all things flora and fauna to explore some of the best-kept green spaces in the St Clare catchment area. The 2017 Open Gardens weekend is being held on 24 and 25 June and more than 20 gardens across Uttlesford and Harlow will be opening to the public in aid of St Clare. New for 2017, the hospice will be opening the gates of their own garden and welcoming members of the public. Christine Walkden will be officially launching the Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 24 June at the hospice in Hastingwood.

Christine continued: “I am delighted to be officially launching St Clare’s Open Gardens weekend and it is a pleasure to be able to welcome members of the public into the hospice’s own garden this year. It is wonderful to share this hidden-gem with the community around St Clare – rather than keeping it concealed behind the hedges. We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful corners of Essex and as a passionate horticulturalist I can’t think of a better way to help raise vital funds for our local hospice than by visiting the magnificent gardens of the St Clare catchment area.” Entry to all the participating gardens is by brochure only. They cost £5 each and contain all the details and locations of the gardens that will be open over the weekend. Brochures are for sale from St Clare Community Fundraiser Dani De’ath, details below left.

Christine Walkden, who is best known as the resident gardening expert on the BBC’s The One Show said: “One of the things our patients and visitors tell us again and again when they come to St Clare is how much they appreciate having access to the Hospice’s beautifully maintained grounds. The St Clare gardens are an oasis of calm and offer a secluded haven for our patients and their families to spend quality time together and make memories they will always treasure.”
