THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe JUly edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION

CONNECTION

I’m chuckling to myself as I type this - do I dare mention that we are now into the second half of the year? I’ve spoken to so many people that are just as mystified - why does it seem that time flies by so much faster as you get older?! Oh, to be young again and experience the endless days of summer! Back to the present, it is indeed summer (if for only a blink of an eye!) and the outdoor events are in full swing - it’s lovely that we have so many to choose from, right on our doorstep! Not least the Town Council’s annual Fun on the Field event at Bullfields. This year’s event promises to be another great one, with food stalls, a dog show, children’s fun fair and live music there is something for everyone - and it’s a great way to catch up with your neighbours too! In this month’s edition Cllr David Royle says his final adieu as mayor and welcomes new mayor Ruth Buckmaster. I’d like to thank David for his contributions during his office and also congratulate Ruth on her new appointment and invite her to pick up the reigns as mayoral contributor. I forgot to mention, at the end of May I took part in Streets2Homes Sleepout 2017 and am very proud to say that through your support I raised £596! For a full account of the event turn to page 20. Until next month, Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Summer in Pishiobury Pishiobury Park is especially beautiful in summer and the nearby riverside paths take you along the cool banks of the Stort. Cross the road outside the Harlow Mill pub and follow the path along the right bank of the River Stort for a mile, past Feakes Lock. Cross over the next footbridge and go on along the far bank until you reach a post with yellow arrows. Turn left here, on long wooden walkway through marshland and tree tunnel. Go through a gate and keep straight across a field. Go through two more gates and continue among the trees ahead. Eventually, a final gate leads out into open parkland. Walk left along an avenue of large trees. This is the “Oak Walk”, whose original trees dated back to the 15th century. As you reach the end of the avenue, carry on in the same direction through a gate onto a fenced path. Cross a small road and keep straight. Turn right immediately after a stream, soon bearing left to rejoin the river and turn right along it. Keep on past riverside flats to return to Harlow Mill. LOCATION: Old Harlow Distance: About 3 miles refreshments: Harlow Mill Pub

phoebe taplin: Phoebe Taplin’s books of “Scenic Walks” along the local Harcamlow Way are available for £5 from Bishop’s Stortford Tourist Information Centre or from www.amazon.co.uk

pact for autism Annual Charity Ball set up by Harlow-based charity celebrates living with Autism PACT for Autism, a local charity set up to support children and adults with Autism, has organised a Charity Ball to celebrate the achievements of people living with autism in the local community and beyond. The Charity Ball will feature a live performance by Dean Beadle, public speaker on autism and entertainer. It will also include videos of the highlights at PACT events over the year, art created by PACT children, as well as a tribute to all the friends and family that supported PACT over the year. The theme of the Ball, ‘Lights, Camera, Auction!’ draws from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, while also celebrating the increasing awareness of diversity and inclusion in our films and media.

Sé London are proud sponsors of the PACT for Autism Charity Ball on behalf of Eva Sharifi. PACT for Autism would like to say a big thank you to Sé London and Eva for their generosity. Drapers Pallet Trucks Ltd are the proud sponsors of the Raffle at this year’s Charity Ball.

The stars on the Hollywood walk of fame was chosen as the logo, as it also reflects the PACT for Autism logo, a star, and its celebration of uniqueness and value in people living with additional needs. The Charity Ball will take place at the Manor of Groves Hotel on the 4th November 2017, and will feature a delicious three-course meal, champagne reception, live disco and a discount on rooms at the hotel. It will be a spectacular night - our biggest party yet - and at £55 a head, not one to miss this winter!

local business people in person Name and Business: Bradley Goodman co-director of Harlow Garden Services Ltd. Where do you live? We moved to Manuden about a year and a half ago to a lovely 17th Century cottage. What’s your favourite local shop? It would have to be Dorringtons HQ, it is a daily ritual on the way to work - bacon roll and a coffee! What’s your favourite local venue? We love going to the Orange Tree for a Sunday roast. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? It has an excellent selection of pubs and restaurants. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love spending time with my family, either walking our dogs or doing the allotment with my daughter. I set up my business because… I have always wanted to go down the path of

horticulture/landscaping and running my own business from the age of about 12. I first started growing plants and selling them locally and I then completed a degree in Horticulture and Landscape Management. I set up the business with my business partner 11 years ago and we have steadily grown the business. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? We recently won an award from one of our suppliers, The Natural Paving Company, for the Best Garden Patio - this is a National award and it will be in next year’s brochure - we were really chuffed! Favourite one liner? It’s always hard to think of something like this but how about - Velcro? What a rip off!

a mayor’s life Ex mayor’s charity update by David Royle Congratulations to the new mayor and Deputy Mayor, Ruth Buckmaster and Angela Alder, respectively. I hope they enjoy their year as much as I did! Delighted to say that we raised £3,948.96, not quite the £5,000 I was hoping for but a very good effort, thanks to all those who supported my fundraising activities and made donations. I handed over the cheque to Kat Pulford, from the St Elizabeth’s fundraising team and Andrew Whitehead the new Finance Director, on Civic Awards evening. Congratulations also to the winners of the Young Citizen and Citizen of the Year Awards: Hannah Brazil and Wendy Hollingsworth. I was delighted that Peyman Akhondzadeh from Tudor House also received an award as he has been so supportive of community events and of St Elizabeth’s. My last meeting was with the Town School Council to take further the Baker’s Walk

Community Art project: we have asked each primary/junior/infants school plus Leventhorpe to prepare a panel representing them/their history/ points of interest/seasons etc. One of the panels will reference the history of the Walk itself.

Summer reading challenge 2017 The reading agency and libraries present: animal agents This summer, go wild for a marvellous mystery at your library! Hertfordshire Libraries and The Reading Agency are delighted to announce that Animal Agents, Summer Reading Challenge 2017 will launch on Saturday 15 July. This summer children will meet a detective team with a difference: the Animal Agents. Created by best-selling Horrid Henry illustrator Tony Ross, these clever creatures use their amazing natural instincts to solve mysteries – and they’ve certainly got their paws full with their latest mission! There’s something strange happening at your local library, and the Animal Agents are looking for eagle-eyed young readers to help them crack the case. Last year an incredible 20,000 children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge across Hertfordshire. With your help, we’re hoping to make 2017 the best year yet! We’re challenging children of all ages to read six library books over the summer holidays and return to the library to tell us about them. They can read anything they choose, including story books, fact books, talking books, and even e-books (available to download for free from our e-library). As children report back on what they’ve read, they’ll be rewarded with limited edition Animal Agents smelly stickers to help them sniff out the truth behind the mystery and catch the culprit. Every child who finishes their six books will be awarded a medal and a certificate. Children who finish by Saturday 9 September will also have the chance to win a ticket to an exclusive author event. It is free to take part; all children need to do is visit their local library from 15 July to collect a starter pack, while stocks last. The Summer Reading Challenge ends on 9 September. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge kicks off on Saturday 15 July with a fun-filled Launch Event at Hemel Hempstead Library. Children can also download the Animal Agents App and visit: www.animal-agents.org.uk for more fun and games and don’t forget to pop into your local library!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING STICKY BARBECUE CHICKEN WINGS 1 kg chicken wings 8tbsp tomato ketchup 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3tbsp smooth mango chutney 2tsp Dijon mustard 1tbsp sunflower oil

FOR THE DIP 150ml soured cream 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 1tbsp fresh snipped chives

Chicken wings are a great budget buy and perfect for a TV dinner or speedy supper. Serve with a home-made coleslaw or rice salad for a more substantial meal.

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180 fan, gas 6. Place the wings on a metal rack set over a roasting tin and roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, make the sticky glaze by mixing together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mango chutney, mustard and oil in a small bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Remove the roasting tin from the oven and liberally brush the glaze all over the chicken wings. 4. Return the roasting tin to the oven and roast the wings for a further 15-20 minutes until the wings are golden brown and slightly charred in places. 5. Mix together the dip ingredients in a small bowl. Serve with the chicken wings.

TIP: You can cook the wings on a hot barbecue for an al fresco supper. It’s best to cook them in the oven for the first 15 minutes then glaze and just place them on the barbecue for the last 15-20 minutes of cooking time.

Our chosen charity streets2homes

Raising the roof for homeless awareness By Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes

Streets2Homes would like to say a big thank you to all 25 participants who were brave enough to take part in the sleep out in the church grounds of St Mary-at-Latton in Harlow on 26th May. We were all kept safe overnight under the watchful eye of our five-security staff; a luxury those who are actually homeless do not have. Thankfully, we also had use of the church hall toilets which again is not a luxury afforded to those who are sleeping rough every night. The weather was kind to us as it was a relatively warm and dry night, imagine how unpleasant sleeping outdoors would be in bad conditions! We had it pretty easy by comparison, but still everyone was looking forward to going back to the comfort of their own home. Volunteers from St Mary-at-Latton were up bright and early and in the church hall from 6am to put on a wonderful English breakfast for us, filling our tummies before we were all homeward bound. Another luxury our homeless don’t get and one for which we were all very grateful indeed. Thank you so very much St Mary-at-Latton church for hosting us again. Thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored the efforts of those who took part – we have raised an amazing £3,740.25 and we still have money coming in too!

Tel:

01279 430011

Email:

kerrie.eastman@streets2homes.co.uk

web:

www.streets2homes.org

It was such a pleasure to see our work so fully supported and to meet those who were taking part; some for the first time and some familiar faces who have joined us every year. This year, we welcomed a group from the Herts and Essex Community Farm, two reverends (one who slept all night in his collar!) a couple of dad and daughter duos and many other wonderful members of the community including CM Connection’s very own Lorraine Perry. Most of us are lucky enough not to know what it feels like to sleep rough night after night. Our annual sleep out replicates just a tiny part of the overall experience, but crucially it raises money so we can help our homeless community. The sleep out just reinforces how important our services are, how lonely and dangerous the still of the night can be and how lucky I am to have a home; how lucky we all are.

Allotments & gardens Show THE show for everyone in Town... Whether you grow flowers in a window box, vegetables and fruit in the garden or on the allotment, enjoy craft or making cakes, jams or chutneys and much more, you can enter this year’s Autumn Show on Saturday 9th September in Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. While the sun is shining you can be tending your plants or sit in the garden making your favourite handicraft and then when the weather is not so good you can gather ideas from Masterchef as to how best to make your winning entry in the domestic class. Make sure you have enough jars for your pickled onions, making jam or chutney. The photography section includes wildlife and landscape. There are such a variety of sections, with categories for children to enter, that you need to obtain a schedule so you can

browse at your leisure and it is guaranteed there is something for everyone to enter, so request one now by email: hazelmead404@btinternet.com or iandbarnard@ aol.com Copies will also be available from the Library, Memorial Hall, Hailey Day Centre and Town Council Offices. Please do not hesitate to contact Hazel Mead 01279 724503 about any aspect of this event as any queries or worries can easily be sorted – if it is the first time you have decided to enter you will be amazed how pleased you will be with the success of your entry. Looking forward to seeing a vast array of colour on show day.
