HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe August edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION
CONNECTION
It’s the summer holidays! Well, it is if you have children or are helping with childcare! I’m hoping the weather continues to be “summery” and we can all enjoy some outdoor activity. I’d like to welcome Mayor Ruth Buckmaster to the magazine and thank her for her contribution. Turn to page 6 to find out what happened in her first two months of office and also what charities she will be raising funds for during her tenure.
August 2017 ISSUE 34
CONTENTS ■ FEATURES & ARTICLES
All of the events and indeed local businesses featured in this magazine are what makes the Town unique; they won’t be found anywhere else. That’s why it’s so important to keep supporting local where possible. Just think you probably know the business owner or see them out and about or at a local event - they could even be the one organising it! Local establishments, in turn, want to support other local businesses and community groups; it’s the “circle of community” life if you will! The likes of Mint Café, Sawbridge Words, the Tudor House Gallery and Café of Angels immediately spring to mind, I bet you could name many more. In fact, why don’t you? Let me know which local business goes above and beyond and we can run a feature on them as a little thank you!

Thwarting the Hackers Reports of some big company being hacked and its users’ data compromised are almost daily news. It’s seems that it’s more a case of asking when a particular service will be hacked rather than if. That means taking precautions against the inevitable, the biggest one being to never, ever reuse the same password on more than one website. If you do, then if one website is hacked the baddies have the password for your other sites and services too. And while we’re at it, let’s make sure we don’t use easily guessable passwords either: the UK’s favourite password is currently 12345678. If you need to create strong passwords you’ll never remember, an online service such as 1Password or LastPass will do the remembering for you. Apple’s Safari can do the same on Macs, iPhones and iPads, although many third-party password services are available too.

IT’s your community
a mayor’s life Two month’s in by Ruth Buckmaster
It is now approaching over two months since I became mayor of Sawbridgeworth. One of the pleasures of the role is in meeting so many members of our community and in working with other mayor’s and chairmen of our district and county. One of the first events I took part in was the local launch of the National Clean Air Day. I’m sure we are all concerned with the quality of our air and the impact of car exhausts on our environment and the air we breathe. The campaign encourages drivers to ‘Turn your key, be idle free’. In other words to switch off our engines when still or waiting, especially near schools. It may sound obvious but an important reminder for all of us. I also attended the Guides AGM and helped judge the craft awards. It was great to see the girls try so many different crafts and to hear about their achievements during the year. This summer also saw the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Reedings Junior school. A family picnic was held with many stalls and music with a 1960s theme. It was a fab celebration with children and adults performing Beatles songs. One of the organisations I volunteer for is the Rivers Heritage Site and Orchard. We hold maintenance days on the first Sunday morning of each month commencing at 10.30. Why not come along and join us. On Saturday October 7th is our ‘Apple Day’, when we invite families to come and help us to pick apples. You can pick some for us and take some home. We take our apples to be pressed into juice to sell throughout the year which helps us pay for the

tools and equipment we need. I am also involved in organising a scarecrow festival at St James Church in High Wych. It was a great success last and will be held on 9th and 10th September. There will be stalls and a barbecue and there will be scarecrows dotted around the village. If there are events in Town you would like me to attend please contact Laura Carter at the town council and she will check my diary. I hope to meet as many of you as possible in the coming months. Have a great summer. Charities of the Year I have chosen two charities for this year. The first is High Wych pre-school nursery based in Bullfields. The second is the Make Lunch project based at the Congregational Church for which I am a volunteer. I shall of course also represent the town at many of the civic events held by other areas in the District during the year and I'll give you an update from time to time as to how things are going.

Fundraising for canalability an intrepid group of fundraisers chased the sun Chasing the sun is something we usually do at holiday time when the weather in this country is cold and wet. However, Jon Robbins, a volunteer with CanalAbility, and a group of his family and friends chose to Chase the Sun over a June weekend – in Herts and Essex! Leaving the head of the River Stort at Bishop’s Stortford at 10.14pm on Saturday evening they aimed to walk along the river’s towpath and arrive at Dobbs Weir before the sun came up at 3.50am on Sunday morning - a distance of some 24 kilometres. If they made it they hoped to raise £1,000 – and they did make it so a great achievement by everyone who took part. Asked why he decided to take organise the walk he told us: “My life changed when I joined CanalAbility as a volunteer. Working with a cross section of our community I suddenly realised what is important in life. Apart from being a first mate I decided I wanted to help the charity by raising some money by way of sponsorship to support their continual good work.” In line with the ethos of CanalAbility the group was made up of people of all abilities. CanalAbility Patron, Paralympian Anne Strike was excited when she heard of this challenge and agreed to take part. Anne, who supports CanalAbility in a variety of ways, saw this encounter as something very different. With so much unknown about the accessibility of the tow path for people who are, in Anne’s words,
“differently able”, she was willing to “give it a go and see how far she could travel without experiencing too many difficulties with the terrain”. Jon also needed a vehicle to transport the people from the finish point back to the start so they could pick up their cars. Bristol Street Motors of Harlow were very helpful and provided him with a MPV. And, of course, everybody needed refreshments along the way. Thanks go to Associated Beverages who kindly provided drinks and food to keep the energy levels of the walkers on a high. Jon would like to thank everybody who was involved with Chasing the Sun. It was the first time he had attempted to organise such an event and found people so helpful that he wants to do it again. The same time next year? CanalAbility is a registered charity dedicated to providing facilities for disabled people and people with special needs to enjoy boating on the river on their specially adapted canal boats.

Grove cottage Will be going far in their new accessible mini bus
Grove Cottage – the home of Bishop’s Stortford Mencap is delighted to announce that it has taken delivery of a brand new, fully wheelchair accessible, 17-seater Volkswagen Crafter minibus as part of the second round of the Department for Transport (DfT) Community Minibus Fund. The minibus will be used to pick up and return local people with learning disabilities from their homes to attend the many weekly clubs on offer at Grove Cottage, as well as being used for various day trips out.
develop their potential, avoid social isolation and to provide respite for their families. To ensure that we can continue to provide a range of transport services, we need more volunteers to drive the minibus and we would welcome anyone interested to email volunteer@ mencapgrovecottage.org or call 01279 656085.
Richard Smith, Treasurer at Grove Cottage said: “This is another key milestone in the 50 years of our charity. Our current minibus is over ten years old and it was really time for a new one, so we applied to the Community Minibus Fund and thankfully we were successful. The new minibus is fully accessible and can take four wheelchairs which means that we can transport more of our members comfortably and safely. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Department for Transport for the grants received from them that made the acquisition of the new minibus possible.”
Bill Freeman, Chief Executive at the Community Transport Association, who administered the fund on behalf of the DfT said: “CTA was thrilled to facilitate the second round of the community minibus fund on behalf of the Department for Transport. The vehicles awarded to successful applicants will make a massive difference to the people and communities they serve, opening up access to education and social activities, employment and vital public services. On behalf of everyone at the CTA I would like congratulate to Grove Cottage on their new vehicle; I look forward to seeing the impact it will have.”
Andrea Charity, Operations Manager at Grove Cottage also commented: “This new minibus is not just a vehicle to take people from A to B, it is a vehicle that supports and enables people of all ages with learning disabilities to access our social and educational activities to

The gardens at easton lodge NEW TREEHOUSE GRACES EASTON LODGE GARDENS, LITTLE EASTON Visitors of all ages have taken to the treehouse, as soon as they have set eyes on it, since it was opened in June this year. Climbing up into the treehouse takes you into the treetops and you can start to imagine yourself, there, as the Countess of Warwick back in the early 1900s. The new treehouse is the realisation of a long-held ambition to bring the Countess’ treehouse back to life. The original treehouse was designed by Harold Peto in 1902. Peto called it ‘Le Robinson’, in reference to the fashionable treehouse restaurants built in 19th century Paris and with a nod to the popularity of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson. The treehouse was a favourite place for the Countess, who enjoyed taking tea there with her guests. There is no record as to whether the Countess entertained Edward VII there, but it is possible, as she maintained her friendship with him long after she ceased to be his mistress. It is likely that many of the Countess’ other friends and acquaintances known to have visited her at Easton Lodge, went up into the treehouse, including HG Wells, Ellen Terry, AA Milne, Gustav Holst, George Bernard Shaw, Beatrice Webb to name but a few. The Trust, whose volunteers maintain and restore the gardens for the enjoyment of the public, found they couldn’t restore the original treehouse, so they built a new one, largely to Peto’s original design and set on stilts so it perches in the original oak tree. The treehouse now gives visitors a shady refuge in the summer and will provide a great vantage point for seeing
the gardens’ autumn colour. In spring it will look out over the swathes of daffodils in that part of the garden and give fine views of the surrounding countryside, through the trees. The Gardens are next open to the public on 20th August, and then one Sunday a month through the rest of the season till the end of October and by arrangement for Group Visits. Visitors can enjoy the other Peto features in the gardens: a sunken Italian garden; a glade with Japanese rill; and in the gardens of Warwick House, which are also open on public open days due to the kind permission of their owners, a cobbled courtyard and a pavilion in Peto’s style, which was restored in 1995. In the autumn, the walled kitchen garden should be bearing fruit and the Trust will be holding an Apple Day on 17th September.

Our chosen charity Keiran’s Story Words by Keiran Mitchell, Housing & Welfare Project Coordinator at Streets2Homes
Hi, let me introduce myself, I’m Keiran Mitchell and I want to share with you how in 2012 I made the career change into support work. I began working with Harlow Youth Vision supporting vulnerable young people and then mentoring offenders with the Essex branch of SOVA, who support people in developing the skills to take control of their lives and reach their full potential. Soon after, I joined Streets2Homes as a volunteer and within a couple of weeks felt as though I had been there for years. Everything about the place felt right; I have often described coming to Streets2Homes as discovering a ‘Keiren-shaped-hole in the universe’ I was exactly where I was meant to be, I was home. I eventually began working as paid staff in the role of Outreach Worker. The team were so encouraging and supportive in my first role; we were a small team with limited space and very limited funds - I didn’t even have a desk and perched wherever I could put my laptop for a while, but we made it work and it was brilliant! I was given a surgery at Occassio House, supporting young people whose tenancies were at risk or who were facing eviction/ homelessness. It was a profound moment for me, walking into that building with briefcase as years prior, as a young homeless person, I

had walked in there with a black bin bag over my shoulder. I’ll never forget one of my first appointments when a cocky young lad sitting slouched in the chair told me “you don’t know nothing, mate.” It was an amazing privilege to reply, “let me tell you my story.” Later, I was given a full-time post (and a desk!) which evolved into my current role - Housing & Project Coordinator. In my job, I am primarily responsible for overseeing the Deposit Scheme and have the joy of supporting people from the first moment of contact, right the way through to handing them a set of keys for their new home. This never gets old. I continue to meet and get to know the most extraordinary people, with unbelievable and sometimes unthinkable stories. Where we work there is something more valuable than money and twice as scarce – hope. I have the opportunity every day to see the effects of hope returning, shining into the cracks in people’s lives. It really is a very special place. I have been blessed in being given creative freedom with projects and fundraising initiatives over the years; putting together a health & wellbeing project, providing support in all areas of physical, mental & emotional, including sexual health, was a personal favorite of mine. We discovered poets, artists and dancers in our midst and confidence sored!

We also ran a ‘romance academy’ where we looked at what healthy relationships look like; it was loads of fun and very amusing. Things like ‘The Big Chill’ live music fundraiser and ‘My Story’ which explores our service users’ personal journeys to, and through, Streets2Homes, giving them the opportunity to share on video. I am blessed to be able to pitch these ideas and be given the support to run with it. More recently I have set up a ‘Property Search & Tenancy Support Workshop’ to meet the ever-increasing need for affordable housing in the private rented sector. This has proved invaluable for people who are unsure on where to start when it comes to privately renting and in providing clients with information and advice

around tenancies, rights and responsibility and housing legislation. I’ve also accessed lots of training and most notably gaining a Level 3 NVQ in Housing and a Diploma in Psychology. There is always opportunity to grow, develop and learn new skills here. The charity itself has expanded and evolved over the years and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it. We have grown into acquiring our own property, increasing staff members, accessing local authority nominations and increasing the number of private landlords working with us exponentially. The future looks bright, and there is always hope here.

1. Melt the butter in a large deep pan. Add the leek and potato and cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes until beginning to soften. 2. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil, then simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potato is tender. Add nearly all the peas (reserve a few for garnish), mint, dill and sugar and simmer for a further 4-5 minutes. 3. Cool the soup for 10 minutes then puree until almost smooth with a stick blender or in batches in a food processor. 4. Return the pureed mixture to the pan and heat through gently. Stir in the cream and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Ladle into four warmed bowls and serve garnished with the reserved peas and dill sprigs.
TIP: If fresh peas are unavailable use the same quantity of frozen peas instead.
