THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe September edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION Well the summer was a bit of a damp squib wasn’t it! Did you see the advert placed in a local newspaper by Affinity Water reminding us all to be prudent with our water consumption? Oh the irony! Still, it did raise a warm smile to brighten the grey, damp and sometimes autumnal weather we experienced! As always, I’m delighted to bring local businesses and community events straight to your door. There’s lots and lots going on this September and into the autumn and it’s all local - hoorah! Have a look at the community pages and editorials in this month’s edition. There is a plethora of activities and events to keep us all happy AND busy! You may be aware of the proposals to move the Town library to a new location within the Town Fire Station and also for the proposed closure of Leventhorpe swimming pool. Petitions have been created for both, they can be found online and in the case of the Library, can also be found in several shops on the High Street - you can sign the traditional way rather than electronically. As Mahatma Gandhi said: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” If we don’t want to lose what’s important we need to come together, work together and be the change! I’ve signed both petitions, will you?

Sawbo travel challenge The sawbo travel challenge is back! You may well remember that last September, four primary schools in Sawbridgeworth competed against one another for one week to find the school with the most sustainable ie non-car driving methods of getting to school. Well it’s back. For one week every year now in September, the schools will again be competing against each other to see who will receive the winning engraved trophy. This year, the week will run from 25th -29th September and ending with a town family orientated Selfie Walk around Sawbridgeworth on the Saturday 30th organised by Sawbridgeworth’s Town Council.

be stamped with a footprint on each day they compete. The winning school with the most sustainable journeys will be presented with a trophy at the town council chambers on 11th October. Don’t forget to put those dates in your diaries….

This year, along with Mandeville, Fawbert and Barnard, Reedings and Spellbrook, High Wych Primary School will also be competing in the fun. Buster the Dinosaur, Hertfordshire’s Travel Mascot will again be promoting the week with appearances at each of the school’s assemblies along with Ruth Buckmaster, the new Mayor of Sawbridgeworth. As a way of making the event fun and memorable, the children will be asked to come to school on foot, scooters, bikes or ‘parking and striding’, but with a different challenge or theme each day. These include Trainer Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday or Funky Footwear Friday and each child will receive a special passport which will

Sawbridgeworth library Is under threat! By Diana Jones On behalf of Friends of Sawbridgeworth Library

Sawbridgeworth Library, built in 1937 and extended in the 1950s, was originally the Council Chamber and offices of Sawbridgeworth Town Council. When the Council moved to Sayesbury Manor they sold the building and its site to Hertfordshire County Council. The building became the Library, and is also home to childcare services in Sawbridgeworth. It is well used and well loved. But the Library is currently under threat! Hertfordshire County Council propose relocating the Library to a purpose-built annex attached to the Fire Station in Station Road. They also propose selling off the current Library site to a property developer for residential use, and will submit a planning application to the County Planning Authority and to East Herts District Council for two large houses to be built on the site. The proposed new site of the Library is neither central nor accessible, situated on the extremely busy Station Road, where traffic is constant and highly concentrated. Access to the new Library would be adjacent to the manually operated pedestrian crossing dangerously sited at the junction of two roads. An additional danger is posed by Fire Station traffic. There are only five parking spaces proposed at the new site and it is simply not safe for cars

8

to park in Station Road itself, which is already congested. So the County Council propose selling off and demolishing a building which is highly visible, well used and central, replacing it with a building which is neither central nor accessible. But all is not lost! The Town Council has had the Library listed as an Asset of Community Value, which means that there is a stay of execution of six months. The County Council has received “pump priming transformational funding” from the Department of Communities and Local Government for the proposed relocation, but this funding could equally well be used to update the current building. The Friends of Sawbridgeworth Library are organising a petition to save the Library and keep it where it is. Many of the local shops have copies of the petition for you to sign. Look for the Save Our Library notice in the window. Or go onto the petition website at: http://cmis. hertfordshire.gov.uk/hertfordshire/Petitions/ tabid/140/ID/176/Save-Our-Library.aspx

scarecrow and flower Festival 2017 This event will take place in the village of High Wych, Sawbridgeworth, Herts CM21 0JB on the above weekend. This will be the second year we have run this event. Scarecrows will line the main road from The Hand and Crown PH to High Wych School and also the short stretch of road past the park up to The Manor of Groves Hotel. They will be judged by Ian, our lovely village postman. There will also be a display of 250 pairs of wellington boots filled with flowers along the route. These will be displayed the week before. The centre of the festival will be at St James’ Church – the only church in the village. There will be parking facilities in The Memorial Hall next to the church and in the school playground on the other side of the church. The churchyard will be filled with further scarecrows and craft and other stalls with a barbecue and a children’s trail. There will be further stalls inside the church where coffee, tea and refreshments can be bought. Our wonderful team of flower arrangers headed by Rosemarie will depict the theme of “Musicals” in the church. The event will be on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday from 12 noon till 4pm. Late Sunday afternoon we will literally have a “Boot Sale” where wellington boots filled with flowers can be purchased. Anyone is welcome to make a scarecrow or it can be a character made out of different materials to straw. There are some wonderful ideas if you Google “Pinterest”. If you are going to make a scarecrow please ring Janet Bellingham on 07882 743627 or 01279 724247 (leave a message) or indeed please ring if you would like to help or have any questions regarding the event.

Our chosen charity Raising the roof for homeless awareness Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes

Streets2Homes was 10 years old on 1st August 2017! We have recently launched our new outreach service in response to the growing number of people rough sleeping in and around the Harlow. We are very lucky to have Wayne join our team and take on the role of Project Worker. One element of Wayne’s role is to visit rough sleepers who have been reported to us by the council, members of the community, local businesses and other agencies. We respond as quickly as possible but always on the same day we receive the report. Wayne will go out and speak to them and reassure them there is help at the centre with basic essential services such as shower facilities, access health care, food and clean clothes in addition to advice and guidance with benefits, finding employment and housing. The Project Worker is also responsible for supporting those who are housed to sustain their tenancy, this is a service we have

provided for some years however, as we are seeing more and more people often with complex needs we have needed to increase this service. We now have 4 paid staff members and a team of 20 volunteers and 7 Trustees who all work together to improve services for those without homes or at risk of homelessness. Our services are essential in helping those who have no other support to access the services and support they need to relieve their situation and escape a life of being on the streets. We could not do the work we do without the support of the local community of which we are always extremely grateful. If you see someone you suspect to be sleeping rough please get in touch with us by calling, report on our website or through StreetLink (a link can be found on our website). streets2homes AJ’s Story “My name is AJ. I have been homeless off and on for 7 years. I got into trouble and was sent to prison. When I got out I decided to break previous ties and went to live with my aunt. I joined LCC College in Liverpool doing acting and dance during the day and took extra dance classes in the evenings. I gave this up to be with my ex-partner and children but sadly it did not work out. I ended up at Streets2Homes and living in a tent. They really helped and supported me and after 2 months they told me that I would be housed. Since then I’ve been cooking a lot and I want to get back into my dancing and carry on from where I left off. I’ve realised dancing is the only thing that makes me feel real, and I’m going to start using that. With Streets2Homes help I was connected with churches and food banks, without them I would still be on the street. If anyone is homeless they should come to Streets2Homes, they can help you like they helped me.”

309 Air cadet squadron what did you do last weekend?

The answer for many 13-18 year olds will likely involve copious amounts of screen-watching and not much of any value. But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you, your children or someone you know is in Year 8 or above at school, they could benefit from the wealth of activities offered by the Air Cadets. Wouldn’t you rather spend your weekends flying, gliding, shooting, hiking, playing sports, earning qualifications, learning to play an instrument, camping and so much more? 309 (Sawbridgeworth) Squadron has been providing young people with these kinds of experiences for over 30 years, so if the answer to all of those activities was a resounding yes, then make sure you come down to 309 (Sawbridgeworth) Squadron Air Cadets on Tuesday 26th September, 8pm - 9pm, for our open evening.

But for those that don’t, the Air Cadets has still provided them with not only fun and memorable experiences, but also vital life-skills: leadership, management, discipline and communication to name but a few. So no matter what career a young person wishes to pursue, the Air Cadets will undoubtedly help, and the vast array of activities and experiences our cadets are involved in make for some enduringly memorable teenage years. At 309 (Sawbridgeworth) Squadron ATC, we’ve given over 450 cadets over the last 30 years the pastime of a lifetime. Now it’s your turn to get involved. Tuesday 26th September, 8pm - 9pm, Cutforth Road Sawbridgeworth. So, what did you do last weekend?

This will be a great opportunity to meet the cadets and staff of 309 and experience some of the activities that the Air Cadets has to offer. Forget about any pre-conceptions you might have; the Air Cadets is not just about wearing a uniform or preparing you for military service. Only a small percentage of our cadets actually go on to join the Armed Forces, and for those that do, the Air Cadets has provided a solid foundation on which to build.

world war i 100 years on

sawbridgeworth world war i commemoration group visit to belgium An enthusiastic group that has been led by the officers of Sawbridgeworth Town Council were proud to represent the town on the weekend of 29th to 31st July 2017 to mark the anniversary of Passchendaele 100 years on and in particular the unveiling of the Hertfordshire Memorial at St Julien, near Ypres. Cards were laid at different locations during the weekend (Menin Gate under the Hertfordshire Regiment panel and in St Georges Church). The cards represented the Schools and uniformed services of the town and were signed by the head teachers and leaders so that we could represent them and the town whilst there. ‘It was a huge privilege an immensely moving to have been part of the unveiling of the memorial, the Herts at War team have been an enormous joy to work with and our heartfelt thanks go to them for the opportunity that they have given us to be part of this very special commemoration’ About the WWI Commemoration Group In 2014 a group of likeminded officers, councillors and volunteers set up group meetings in preparation for national events that would take place over the next 4 years in commemoration of the centenary of the Great War. During this time we have had held many events. This include a Christmas Day Truce Football Match, visits to the Herts at War exhibition in Letchworth, research visits to HALs, Whistle for the Somme Remembrance service, visits to Commonwealth War Graves in Tottenham and Edmonton as part of the Living Memories Project and hosting the Herts at War Exhibition at our Town Council

offices from September 2015 to end of January 2016. This included our fully interactive WW1 communications trench that was built in the back garden at the town council offices. We had over 1000 visitors to the exhibition during it’s time in Sawbridgeworth, many of these visitors were in the form of school party visits from our local junior Schools and Leventhorpe School. The trip was arranged and coordinated by Joanne Sargant, Town Projects Manager. In attendance were the WW1 commemoration group that included the Town Clerk, Richard Bowran, the current Mayor – Cllr Ruth Buckmaster, Deputy Mayor Cllr Angela Alder (Town and District) and District and County Councillor Eric Buckmaster (also Town Councillor) Mr Gary Hanson (Minister of Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church) was part of the unveiling speakers and gave an address. The rest of the group that travelled were: Mr Ron Alder, Mrs Valerie Bright & Mr Nick Bright, Mr Barry Hodges & Mrs Lorraine Hodges, Mr Barry Leslie & Mrs Chris Leslie, Mr David Mead & Mrs Hazel Mead, Mr Andrew Passfield & Mrs Shona Passfield, Mr John Rider & Mrs Pam Rider and Mr Theo van de Bilt.

There will be a performance by children from the local theatre group Diverse Performing Arts, plus professional singer Aimi Percival who will lead us in rousing patriotic songs and special Vera Lynn classics. This year’s main theme will be Centenary of Women’s Royal Naval Service. Children can also take part in activities related to remembrance. Vintage military vehicles will be on display at the Hall. If you wish to go to the Airfield Memorial first in a vintage military vehicle to pay your respects to those who were based there, be at the Memorial Hall by 10.30am to be back by 11.30am. A minibus, courtesy of Sawbridgeworth Town Council, will also be available for those wishing to travel to the Memorial. Everyone is welcome to come in dress from the 1940’s/1950’s era or military

There will also be displays by the Local History Society, rations which were available to a family in World War Two; also photos of the unveiling of a Memorial to the Hertfordshire Regiment who lost their lives in World War One at St. Julien, Belgium as before no memorial existed.
