Sawbridgeworth Town Council Presents
Christmas
Lights & Fayre Saturday 25th November From 4.30pm, lights switched on 6.30pm
Bell Street, Sawbridgeworth
â?„
Dear Residents This year, our annual Christmas Lights Switch-On event has something for everyone. The main event will be taking place in the two main car parks off Bell Street. Lots of local shops will be open in the Town for you to start some early Christmas shopping. Father Christmas has contacted us to let us know that he will be in his grotto from 4.30pm on this special evening. You can find the Grotto in the main car park where the stage and Fun Fair are. There are lots of things to take into account to make the evening safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Here are just a few things to make a note of: Please use the Twitchell (footpath to the Cricket and Bowls Club) that leads from Fair Green to London Road to access the event in addition to Bell Street access points. Please look at our website www.sawbridgeworth-tc.gov.uk for updated information. Entertainment will be on the stage from 4.30pm onwards with our special guest Richie Firth from the Absolute Radio Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show. The Cricket Club is hosting Craft stalls by local business people. Church House is home to Tudor House Gallery who have an Arts & Crafts Fair Showing off all that the shop has to offer all year around. The Memorial Hall in The Forebury has a Food Festival running from 4pm to 9pm ...and of course you can buy burgers and hot dogs, drinks, mulled wine and goodies in the main event area.
We look forward to seeing you.

THE
WELCOME
CM21
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe november edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION
CONNECTION
Were you surprised to find CM21 wrapped up in a lovely outer cover this month? Its technical term is “Cover Wrap Advertising” or a “wrap”. This is the first time we’ve ever offered this and we’re delighted that the honour was given to Sawbridgeworth Town Council to help publicise this years Christmas Light Switch On! The wrap is designed to be pulled apart from the main magazine, leaving you with two separate publications, in this instance the magazine and a programme of events for The Christmas Lights Switch On. What do you think? Would be really interested to hear your feedback. As always, there are some really good local events to look forward to this month, including: the Football Club’s firework display on Sat 4th November, the annual Nostalgia Day on Saturday 11th November and of course we have the Christmas Lights Switch On on Sat 25th November. The latter starts from 4.30pm but it’s worth noting that the Food Festival at the Memorial Hall and the Arts & Crafts Fair at the Church House sponsored by the Tudor House Gallery start at 4pm, so an early tea or browse could be a precursor to the evening events. There is a new business in Town, read all about Antiques & Chic on page 11 and if you haven’t popped in yet, it’s well worth a visit! Finally, we’re joining in with the Christmas Light Switch On celebrations by running a competition to win a £50 voucher to spend with a Sawbridgeworth retailer of your choice, a little something to help with the Christmas shopping. Turn to page 9 to find out how! Until next month,
Lorraine

Let’s walk to school Sawbridgeworth Selfie Walk Following the success of the Sawbo Travel Challenge in October, that takes places amongst the 5 schools in the town, the Town Council ended off the week with a Town Selfie Walk. Grateful thanks go to the Women’s Institute, The History Group, The Evangelical Congregational Church and The Rotary Club who all hosted a gazebo. Thanks too, to the School PTA for putting on a joint schools refreshments stall, members of our local fire station and finally to Hertfordshire County Council Road Safety Officers, Lindsey and Heather for their support.

LOCALs that launch business is booming for Nicola & Nick Crooks who recently moved their company Antiques & Chic to larger premises in Sawbridgeworth...
When did you set up in business? Antiques are our passion and having run our Internet business alongside our day jobs for over 10 years, we decided to go full time with our business this time last year and set up an Antiques Warehouse in Harlow. Having traded there for a year and moved twice within the business park to upsize we once again needed to move to bigger premises. We trade with interior designers, TV prop departments, Antique Traders and of course members of the public are welcome. What made you decide to set up your own business? The decision to set up our own business was not only based on following our passion but also to offer us more flexibility with our working hours, which would allow us to be around for our children who are 4 and 6 years old. They regularly join us at the firm and we hope we can leave them a lasting legacy. How did you decide on your company name? Antiques are the obvious part and chic as we sell stylish and unique items for you and your home. Tell us about you. We’re a husband and wife team known as the “Nix” (we are a Nicholas and Nicola). Nick comes from a long line of Antiques dealers from the East End and I was a French Secondary school teacher for many years. I joined Nick’s passion and specialised in vintage costume and fine jewellery. My French does come in handy when buying in France and dealing with our French clients! What’s the most challenging aspect of owning
your own business? When you run your own business it really is 24 hours a day. As the business is also Internet based the world does not stop to sleep and we are contacted at all times of the day and night. What has been the most rewarding aspect? Meeting new people and being part of a local community, which we are looking forward to doing again in Sawbridgeworth! Do you hope to expand your business? If so, how and when? This is a big expansion for us as this new property is 4 times the size of our previous one. We are looking forward to being part of a new community and meeting new people. We are always on the look out for new unique items and will continue to source the most eclectic mix of antiques and collectables. We will also continue to expand our national and international client base online by offering great prices on great items! We are also going to be on TV as we have Salvage Hunters coming to film part of an episode here. Putting us firmly on the map! Check us out when show goes to air in a few months on Quest TV and Discovery Channel. How should potential customers contact you? We can be contacted in many ways, including Instagram and Twitter, see below for our main details. Anything else you’d like to add? We like to buy unwanted items and we are also here to help and will offer free advice and valuation on your heirlooms. Come and test Nick “Lovejoy” Crooks’ knowledge.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING FRENCH OMELETTE WITH GARLIC TOMATOES 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large eggs 1tbsp milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper Large knob of butter Spinach and rocket leaves, to serve
Eggs are the perfect fridge standby for a quick and filling supper. Here’s how to make a classic creamy French omelette for one in a few simple steps – the recipe can easily be doubled to serve two people.
1. Toss the tomatoes and garlic with the olive oil. Place on a foil-lined grill pan and cook under a medium heat for 4-5 minutes until just tender. 2. Meanwhile, lightly beat the eggs and milk in a jug and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Heat the butter in a small omelette or non-stick frying pan until it is just foaming. Pour in the beaten eggs and stir gently with a fork, drawing the mixture in from the sides to the centre as it sets and letting the liquid egg run out to the sides. 4. When the omelette is just set, stop stirring and cook for a further 30 seconds to brown the underside (see tip). Place the grilled tomatoes on top of the omelette. 5. Slide the omelette onto a serving plate, tipping the pan to gently fold it over the tomatoes. Serve immediately with salad.
TIP: Take care not to overcook the omelette – keep the heat at medium and remove the pan from the heat when the top is still soft and creamy.

CENTRAL SURGERY SAWBRIDGEWORTH Stay Well This Winter It’s important to look after yourself, especially during the winter months. Cold weather can be seriously bad for your health. If you start to feel unwell, even if it’s a cough or a cold, don’t wait until it gets more serious. Seek advice from your pharmacist. The severity of flu symptoms and the duration is dependent upon the individual. Usually the temperature will subside within 48 hours. The worst of the symptoms should be over within 4-5 days but it can take up to 10 days to fully recover. There is no ‘cure’ for flu, however you can treat the symptoms with over the counter medicines and self-help measures. Shingles Vaccinations - Who’s Eligible? If you are 70 or are in your 70’s born after 1 September 1942 and not had the vaccine, if you are 78 or if you are 79 and missed out on a vaccine - you are eligible. Protect yourself from the pain of shingles and contact the surgery about a vaccination.

help the A guide to helping hedgehogs Hedgehogs are in serious decline and could be extinct in urban areas by 2025. They need our help to protect the species so please do what you can to save them. 1. Avoid using pesticides and slug pellets in your garden. Not only can they harm hedgehogs but they also damage their food chain. Use organic alternatives. Broken up egg shells can be put around the base of plants to discourage slugs and snails. 2. Make sure hedgehogs have easy access to your garden – cut a 4-5 inch hole in the bottom of a fence panel or in your back gate, or dig a small hole underneath your fence so they can get through to your neighbours garden. Hedgehogs will travel several miles in a night to forage so talk to your neighbours and agree where you can dig or cut a hole and pass on this information to them. If possible allow a corner of your garden to go wild as this will provide protection and encourage natural sources of food.
5. If you want to put food out NEVER feed bread and milk as this can kill a hedgehog. Feed only cat/dog food in jelly, NOT gravy as this is too salty and choose the poultry or meat based flavours NOT fish. You can also feed unsweetened muesli moistened with water or you can buy specialist dry hedgehog food mix which can be left out all winter and this could be the difference between a hedgehog making it through to spring or not.
3. Encourage hedgehogs into your garden but NEVER take one from the wild as it could be a nursing mother and your actions could be condemning the babies to death. Do NOT try to take a hedgehog as a pet, they are wild animals and will not adapt to captivity.
6. Provide a shallow dish of fresh water, especially if you are feeding a dry food mix but make sure it is not too deep. If you have a pond make sure it is covered or has a gently sloping side or some kind of step so that any hedgehog that falls in can get out again. They are good swimmers but can easily drown if they have no means of escape. A piece of netting secured to the side of the pond could be a lifesaver.
4. If you own a dog please be careful as they have been known to mistake a hedgehog for a ball and can cause serious damage. Cats however tend to ignore hedgehogs. Hedgehog fleas are breed specific and cannot transfer to you or your pets.
7. Make or buy a hedgehog house. This can either be used for hibernation, or for a mother hog to give birth or you could use it as a feeding station as many of them are designed with tunnels to help make them fox and cat proof.

Hedgehog 8. Be extra careful to check your garden before using a strimmer as they can cause horrific injuries that almost always result in death because maggots will very quickly infect the wound. Also be careful with garden netting, make sure it starts 22-30cm off the ground so hedgehogs can get underneath, the same with football type goal nets. Cover open grates or drains so that hedgehogs can’t fall in. 9. Check bonfires before lighting them and if possible relocate them just before lighting to check that you do not have a hedgehog (or a family pet) sleeping in it. 10. Dispose of litter responsibly. Crush the end of cans before you put them in the bin/ recycling box and cut plastic beer can multipack yokes to break the circles as hedgehogs can get their heads trapped and will starve to death.
11. If you see a sick or injured hedgehog/ abandoned babies/one that appears to be ‘drunk’/is excessively scratching/or out in the daylight please call the BHPS or Wildlife Aid as soon as possible as time is of the essence. If you see any small hedgehogs in October to February please contact your local rescue and send them a photograph so they can decide if it is large enough to hibernate or if it needs to be taken into foster care. 12. Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t ‘feel’ right then it probably isn’t. If you are in any doubt please call the The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Wildlife Aid or local charity Herts Hogline, as you might just save a life! Our chosen charity Art Project Words by Keiren Mitchell, Housing & Welfare Project Coordinator
The Streets2Homes art project has been running since 2014 to support the confidence, wellbeing and motivation of the people with work with. This invaluable project provides our homeless centre users with a space for reflection and expression as well allowing them to enjoy the health benefits of relieving stress, increasing brain function, improving their mood and cultivating healthy social lives in a fun and safe environment. The project was first developed in conjunction with the Harlow Recreation Fund through Essex Community Foundation. In 2016, we were fortunate enough to secure funding from the Sebright Trust to run the project up to 1st November 2017. This year we were bequeathed funds from a generous supporter which will allow us to continue with this project until April 2018, when we will seek further funding to continue. Over the last year, the Streets2Homes art project has seen many service users through its doors exploring their creativity; we expected 20 clients to attend our workshops initially, but that figure has more than doubled – this is great news as we now have enough artwork to arrange an exhibition for the local community and the artists themselves to enjoy! There really is something for everybody; whether it’s painting, sketching or crafts, clay modelling or soap carving, there is an artist in all of us we just have to find it. One service user said; “It has really helped me mentally and changed my outlook on life.”

are you interested in becoming part of neighbourhood watch?
Neighbourhood Watch is FREE to join and is not just about reducing crime; it is about residents encouraging communities to look out for suspicious people and vehicles, helping neighbours if they are vulnerable, and keeping an eye on their property while they are away. It is not about curtain twitching but about being aware of what is going on around you. Benefits include becoming familiar with crime prevention ideas; also some insurance companies give discounts on home insurance! If you would be interested in becoming part of a scheme, please email your details to me, PCSO 6666 Amanda Higham at amanda.higham@herts.pnn.police.uk. If you would like to receive messages about the area via our Online Watch Link, email me with your name, address and contact number and I will add you to our system. Neighbourhood Watch working with the Police A strong relationship between Neighbourhood Watch and the police at local, force and national level is vital to reduce crime and keep people safe in their communities. NHW are committed to building and maintaining a positive partnership with the police. At a local level NHW members and coordinators help to ensure the police meet the needs of their communities, as well as providing information about crime and suspicious incidents. At force area level, each police force has a ‘single point of contact’ (SPOC) for Watch issues. They liaise with the force area level Neighbourhood Watch Association. Nationally, the Neighbourhood Watch movement is part of the Citizens In Policing family, along with the Special Constabulary, Police Support Volunteers and Cadets.
