sawbridgeworth community library new year new volunteering opportunity In November 2015, as part of our Inspiring Libraries strategy, Hertfordshire Libraries launched a new project to work with local communities and turn some of the smallest libraries in Hertfordshire into Community Libraries. This involves setting up community steering groups who work in partnership with the Library Service to manage and deliver the local library service. Hertfordshire County Council is still responsible for the maintenance of the buildings, stock and IT, as well as a long term commitment to support and train volunteers. However, volunteers form the bulk of the frontline staffing providing a welcoming public service and helping customers to get the most out of their library. We are currently working successfully with volunteer groups in Chorleywood, Redbourn, Kings Langley, Goffs Oak, Wheathampstead and Knebworth Libraries and training is also currently in progress at London Colney Library. Following a public meeting in 2017, we are now in a position to commence training new volunteers here in Sawbridgeworth. We will soon be holding two promotional drop-in sessions in the library to answer any questions about the project or for local residents to sign up to our volunteer induction sessions. The drop-ins will be held on the following dates: Wednesday 31 January, 14.00 to 18.00pm Tuesday 6 February, 15.00 to 18.00pm
Induction training sessions for new volunteers will then be provided on the following dates. We ask that new volunteers attend one of each session: Session 1: Tuesday 20 or 27 Feb Session 2: Tuesday 6 or 13 March These sessions will be held from 15.00 to 17.00 pm at Sawbridgeworth Library. This is an exciting new opportunity for the library service in Sawbridgeworth and for local residents to become actively involved in the running of the library and the development of its future services. If you would like to attend one of the above induction sessions, or if would like further information about the project, please email the Community Services team at libraries. communityservices@hertfordshire.gov.uk We look forward to meeting you and working with you soon!

On January 11th we had a visit from Drew and T from TV’s popular series, “The Salvage Hunters”. We were lucky enough to have them spend the day with us filming for the new series and they ended up buying lots from us too! They were really nice guys and were very
impressed with the shop. We have now coined our new shop motto: “If its good enough for Drew its good enough for you!” Come and see for yourselves, there’s parking too!

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice
Hospice launches workshop for young people to remember lost loved ones St Clare Hospice, has launched a new group therapy workshop for children, young people and their families entitled ‘Sharing Stories’. The new group is being offered as part of their Children and Young People’s Support Service, which launched in May 2017 after a major grant was received from BBC Children in Need. The ‘Sharing Stories’ workshop offers a safe place for children, young people and their family members, to come together with other local families to share favourite moments and memories of their loved ones who have been cared for by St Clare. St Clare Children, Young People and Family Therapist, Catherine Kiff, outlined the Sharing Stories group: “When someone close to us dies, there can be a worry that special memories may be forgotten – those happy, funny and unique stories may never be shared between members of a family. Sharing Stories offers a safe place to be able to talk about those hidden and precious memories of a loved one, which are a part of a family’s history. Our workshops aim to be positive and uplifting for participants, supporting children and young people to come to terms with what has happened within the grieving process. Part of the workshop also includes a group facilitator writing up shared stories, for participants to take home their own stories as a keepsake after the course concludes. ”Commenting on the launch of the new group therapy workshop, Catherine said: “It is fantastic for us to be able to launch this group for children and young people who have lost someone close to them at St Clare. Remembering a loved one, and learning more about that special person,
Catherine Kiff, St Clare Hospice Child, Young Person and Family Therapist
can provide such a comfort to those who are experiencing bereavement, which is exactly what Sharing Stories aims to offer. We’re really looking forward to our first few sessions which we hope will be hugely beneficial to those who attend.” Sharing Stories will be led by Child, Young Person and Family Therapist, Catherine Kiff, at the Hospice Centre in Hastingwood. The service is open to any child or young person who has experienced bereavement at St Clare Hospice. Sessions will occur on a weekly basis with attendees encouraged to participate in the full programme lasting a total of four weeks. The first Sharing Stories sessions will begin in February 2018, and is open to children and young people aged 8+ years who have had a loved one cared for by St Clare Hospice in the last 3 years. The Hospice is encouraging people to get in touch with their team if they would like to attend with their children. The dates of the first Sharing Stories group are as follows: 10am – 12pm, Saturday 3 February 2018 10am – 12pm, Saturday 10 February 2018 10am – 12pm, Saturday 17 February 2018 10am – 12pm, Saturday 24 February 2018 Places are limited and participants will be selected on a first-come-first-served basis. harlow tye rotary club Charity Abseil 2018 - keep the challenge alive Would you like to raise money for a charity or voluntary organisation that is dear to your heart, or are you involved in such an organisation that needs to raise money for a particular project? It can be local, national or international and it might be, for instance, a School, a Club, a Hospice or a national charity such as Cancer Research UK. Are you game for a challenge or do you know someone who is? Then read on: Yes, it is nearly time for Harlow Tye Rotary Club’s Annual Charity Abseil event. In the 20 years so far an extraordinary £910,000 has been raised for hundreds of worthy causes. We see no reason to stop whilst there are charities and voluntary organisations needing help to raise funds. When and where is it? It will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 5th and 6th May 2018 (the May bank holiday weekend) at the Church Langley Water Tower in Harlow. How does it work? Our Club employs fully qualified experts to train and supervise you throughout the abseil procedure. You have to pay an entry fee of £35 to take part but 100%
of the sponsorship that you raise from family, friends and colleagues goes to the beneficiary of your choice. By the way, you have to be 16 or over to enter. How do I (or they) get involved? Go to our Club website www. harlowtyerotary.org.uk and follow the instructions there to download a registration form and conditions of entry. Failing that, you can e-mail us on abseil@ harlowtyerotary.org.uk or telephone/text Bill on 07711982671 to have them sent or delivered to you. Charities or voluntary organisations can enter teams but please contact us for details. Entries are now being accepted. Why should I? Every year, a good number of people who admit to being scared of heights have a go and the sense of achievement that they experience is there for all to see – not only for doing it but also for the money that they raise for their chosen cause. If you have any questions, do please give me a call, Bill Colton - Harlow Tye Rotary Club Abseil Co-ordinator. My contact details are below.

From Turkey Street Station, turn right under railway and continue along Turkey Street, under main road, and keep straight. Cross the New River and a road to enter Myddelton House, with a rockery garden at the far end full February snowdrops, or carpets of March daffs in the Alpine meadow. Go back to entrance of Myddelton House and turn right along road. Just before brick bridge, turn right through gate, left over footbridge, right and right again. Follow Forty Hall Loop (purple waymarks) for two miles, past wooded lakes farmland with sheep and pigs, and a vineyard. Look out carefully for the purple arrows, eventually turning left at a junction of paths. Through door in corner of walled garden, you reach Forty Hall. This Jacobean mansion, in a huge landscaped park, has a great café, serving farm veg soup and interesting cakes, like spinach and lime. Leaving Forty Hall, turn left onto road past church. Just after school, turn right on tarmac path; keep straight over main road and past cemetery. Finally, turn left at London Loop sign back to Turkey Street.

CENTRAL SURGERY SAWBRIDGEWORTH Productive General Practice/Demand Audit In January 2017 Central Surgery took part in a Demand Audit. The aim was to provide a detailed analysis of the patient demand for primary care services and to examine the capacity offered by the Stort Valley & Villages practices to meet this demand. The data from the audit was used to help us restructure our new appointment system, below are some key points that arisen from the demand audit: • Central Surgery was above the national benchmark for providing clinical capacity for GPs, Nurses and Healthcare Assistants appointments. • Central Surgery had the highest level of patient contacts, equivalent to 7.85 contacts per patient per annum. • 55% of reception time was spent dealing with appointment requests. • GPs indicated that 79% of consultations could have been directed to a more appropriate pathway than a GP. GPs felt that 60% could have been better dealt with by a Nurse Practitioner. • Nurses indicated that 37% of consultations could have been directed to a Community Pharmacist. • 82% of our patients did not seek any selfhelp or advice prior to their consultation. In May 2017 Central Surgery had a full team meeting to discuss the outcomes and start the Productive General Practice project. Since then changes have been implemented and reviewed on a monthly basis. We identified that a proportion of patients were being asked to call back on the day their GP works for a same day telephone consultation. In order to reduce this we have introduced pre-bookable GP telephone consultations
therefore you are no longer required to call on the day your GP is working for a same day telephone consultation. Pre-bookable GP telephone consultations can be booked up to 2 weeks in advance. We have staggered the release of these pre-bookable telephone consultations to help spread the availability throughout the month. A similar system has been introduced with GP face-to face appointment. There are now pre-bookable GP face-to-face appointments which are also staggered release, therefore, spreading out the availability throughout the month. We still offer routine on the day GP telephone consultations however we only have a certain amount of capacity. If you require a GP telephone consultation on the day you will need to contact the surgery on 01279 603 180 (option 2) in the morning. The phone lines open at 8am. If you are calling to book a pre-bookable GP telephone consultation or face-to-face appointment we are encouraging patients to call after 12pm when the lines are less busy. If you have received a letter stating routine GP telephone consultation or appointment, you will be booked in for a pre-bookable slot which may be in 2-3 week’s time. To reduce patients having to call the Surgery, we are trying to encourage patients over the age of 18 to register for online access services. Online access enables you to request your repeat prescription, book appointments and view your GP records. For more information visit: www.centralsurgerysawbo.nhs.uk/online_ access.
