WELCOME

THE

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe Christmas edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION It’s the last magazine of the year and there’s a lot to fit in, so I’ll get straight to it! I love the festive season, there’s a sense of community and togetherness that is more apparent now than at any other time of year...

CONNECTION

Details of the “Carols on the Green” and other Christmas and New Year events can be found on our community and what’s on pages, there’s plenty of opportunity to get out and socialise! Thank you to our fabulous local ministers who took the time out of their busy schedules to answer, what has now become, our “traditional” Christmas question. This year they were asked, if they were one of the Wise Men which gift would they have given the baby Jesus and why? A bit of a tricky one I thought, especially with the limit on word count. I was wrong, both answers lifted my heart and resonated with me - might have something to do with a certain choice of songs... turn to page 10 to find out why. I’ve been delivering some of the mags over the past few months, you may have seen me in my red Smart car. I’ve really enjoyed getting out and about - you are SO friendly! I’d like to thank the kind lady who offered me a cup of tea in Coney Gree. It was lovely to chat with you, thank you for your kindness and next time I hope I can accept your offer - true community, Christmassy spirit experienced early! Wishing you a very merry Christmas & a happy New Year! Until 2018!

st elizabeth’s ex-mayor’s charity update By David Royle

My wife and I were delighted to be invited to St Elizabeth’s to see the two new specially adapted bikes/trikes for their school pupils, purchased from the money raised during my year as mayor. The photos show the obvious pleasure these bikes give to pupils. Thanks to everyone for helping raise that money at various fundraising events in 2016/17. A great result.

local business people in person Name and Business: Mark Rowley and my business is All Things PC. Where do you live? I was born and bred in Harlow and lived there for 38 years but for the past 2 years I’ve lived in Bishop’s Stortford. What’s your favourite shop? Cycle King, it’s been there for as long as I can remember and it’s so much better than going to a very well known high street store. What’s your favourite Venue? It used to be the Goosefat & Garlic restaurant but that has unfortunately closed down now. I have heard very good things about the New Mexico restaurant so I’m very eager to try that out. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? Sawbridgeworth has a real community feel about it. It’s a beautiful town and I look forward

All Things PC to the Christmas lights each year. What do you like doing when you’re not working? Spending time with my family and watching football. My job is my hobby also, so I do a lot of tinkering about with home computers. I set up my business because... I wanted to be my own boss and actually make a living from my hobby, which involves building/fixing computers. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Our 3 children all recently received great school reports. My daughter has even been told she can sit her English GCSE a year early. What’s your favourite one liner? “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

we asked our local ministers… If you had been one of the wise men, which gift would you have given the baby Jesus and why?

Gary Hanson

Frances Arnold

Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church

parish church of Great St Mary, Sawbridgeworth

Wow... what a question. I find buying my family the right gift stressful enough, let alone a gift for the Son of God. Of course, those famous gifts of the wise men were laden with prophetic significance, they spoke about who Jesus was, what He would do and about His death on Good Friday, just 33 years later. For me, the gift I would give would have to reflect how I see the baby in the manger... if I saw Him as just another baby, perhaps I’d get Him a toy or clothes, if I saw Him as some holy prophet like John the Baptist, maybe I’d give Him something to help Him learn more about the God He would serve. But I know that the baby in that manger wasn’t just another baby, or even a special human. He was God the Son in human form. The Son of God who took on flesh to live like us, know us, show us the way, the truth and, ultimately, to give His life so that through faith in Him, we all can know forgiveness and everlasting life.

The wise men from the East gave the baby Jesus expensive gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, signifying kingship, priesthood and suffering. What present would have as much significance in the twenty-first century as the gifts of the wise men in the first? The poet Christina Rossetti found herself pondering this question a century and a half ago. She asked, “What can I give him?” and she contrasted her circumstances with those of the wealthy and powerful wise men. In doing so, she perceived not only that the material cost of any offering was irrelevant, but that the best gift that can be offered, not only by us, but also the wise men and the shepherds, is the gift of oneself. This inspired her to write the beautiful carol ‘In the Bleak Midwinter.’ It concludes with these words: What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb, If I were a wise man I would do my part; Yet what I can I give him, give my heart.

So what can I give that baby? Nothing... because it is He who gave all, for me. So, like the little drummer boy, I can only offer that new born King my heart, my will and my life.

We sing this and many other beautiful carols at Christmas. You are most warmly welcome to come to any of the services at Great St Mary’s.

God Bless

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Christmas.

Gary

Our chosen charity Awards for achievement Words by Kerrie Eastman, Chief Operations Officer S2H

In October, Streets2Homes held our annual evening of celebration, Awards for Achievement, where we acknowledged the successes of our clients, volunteers and significant others who help us as an organisation to achieve our aims. We had the wonderful Vice Chair of Harlow Council, Maggie Hulcoop, in attendance at the centre to present the awards; unfortunately, her stunning chain of office had been sent off for repair, so our quick-thinking, solution-focused project worker, Wayne, designed and crafted a makeshift one which Maggie accepted with good humour, grace and wore all evening (Maggie actually stated she preferred Wayne’s design as it wasn’t so heavy!). Certificates were presented to our clients who had successfully completed accredited courses such as Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, IOSHH, Food Allergy Awareness and many more; our volunteers who had successfully completed courses were also presented with their certificates. It is wonderful to see our clients grow in confidence, self-esteem and improve their employment opportunities and we are immensely proud of our clients who have successfully completed these courses.

our Welfare and Support Worker, is passionate about encouraging our clients to develop their confidence, well-being and reach their full potential. We are currently seeking further funding through the Aviva Community Fund to continue and further develop our Achieve2Believe project and YOU CAN HELP US by voting. Quite simply, if we receive the most votes, Aviva will award us vital funding. To vote you can go to https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/ view/17-6250 During our awards ceremony, we also recognised Rachel Bartlett of Astro Lighting as our Champion of the Year; the Astro Lighting Company support us in so many ways throughout the year with funding, events, specialist support and delicious pizza lunches to name a few! But Rachel goes above and beyond this and has become a face that everyone at the centre recognises and welcomes as she takes part in all the events that Astro arrange and is a frequent visitor to the centre. We are truly grateful for all her enthusiasm and the support we receive from Astro Lighting.

As always, we are extremely grateful to our funders who enable us to provide these opportunities to our clients in an environment that they feel safe and supported in. Helen,

policing our local community

protect yourself and your loved ones from phone scammers Police in Hertfordshire are urging people to be on their guard against phone scams following a number of recent incidents. Several different methods have been used by fraudsters to try and con victims out of cash. A 53-year-old woman from the Buntingford area was contacted by a woman who claimed to be from BT and persuaded the victim they had viruses on their computer. The victim was then transferred to a ‘security expert’ who accessed her computer remotely. The offender then became threatening and told the victim to go to Tesco and purchase £5,000 worth of iTunes vouchers. Fortunately, officers intervened and no purchase was made. An 87-year-old man from Markyate was contacted and told that he owed £500 to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The victim was persuaded to purchase £500 worth of iTunes vouchers as payment and read the codes over the phone to the offender. Similarly, a 65-year-old man from Stevenage was contacted by a man claiming to be from HMRC who stated the victim owed taxes. Again, the victim was instructed to purchase iTunes vouchers from several outlets and read the codes over the phone. He was also persuaded to transfer money over to a Bitcoin account. Overall, he lost £11,500 to the fraudsters. Reports of ‘more traditional’ phone scam offences have also been received in Hertsmere whereby offenders call victims and claim to be police officers investigating fraudulent activity on

their bank accounts. They then ask the victims to hand cash or bank cards over to a courier as part of a fictitious investigation. No money was lost on these occasions. Detective Sergeant Jon Leak, who leads Hertfordshire Constabulary’s specialist phone scam investigation team, said: “We continue to do everything we can to bring offenders to justice. A number of convictions have already been secured but, unfortunately, these scams are still occurring with a variety of methods now being used. “Thankfully, many people recognise them for what they are and refuse to part with any money however, there are occasions when people fall prey to the highly persuasive nature of these fraudsters and often lose thousands of pounds. “I want to reiterate that you will never be asked under any circumstances, by police, banks or HMRC, to purchase iTunes vouchers as payment. Similarly, police and banks would never ask for your PIN or for you to hand cash and bank cards over to a courier. “If you are suspicious of a call you receive, please hang up and report it to police. Remember to wait at least five minutes to ensure you aren’t reconnected to the offender.” He added: “Please also share this advice with older relatives, friends and neighbours to help prevent them from becoming victims.” If you think you may have been a victim of a phone scam, please report it to police on the non-emergency number 101.

town twinning strengthening german Twinning links By David Royle

A party of 12 from Sawbridgeworth visited our twin town of Moosburg near Munich from 13 to 15 October. We were welcomed by the Mayor, Frau Anita Meinelt, and our hosts at an informal civic reception. We visited the walled town of Kelheim on the Danube, took a boat trip through the nearby Danube gorge and visited the Liberation Hall, built by King Ludwig I to celebrate victory over Napoleon. At an informal dinner on Saturday the Town Mayor, Cllr. Ruth Buckmaster, handed a declaration on behalf of the Town Council committing us to the strengthening of links between our two towns to Herr Erwin Weber, a member of the Moosburg Town Council with responsibility for Twinning. RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING SALMON & MONKFISH FILO WREATH Sunflower oil, for greasing 100g butter, melted 270g pack filo pastry, thawed if frozen 450g salmon fillet, skinned and diced 450g monkfish fillet, skinned and diced 225g cooked peeled tiger prawns 2 tbsp lemon juice

This

3 tbsp chopped fresh dill Salt and freshly ground black pepper Lemon wedges and dill sprigs, to garnish

festive wreath makes a great alternative to traditional roast turkey and can be prepared in advance the night before.

1. Use the sunflower oil to grease a 1.2 litre capacity ring mould, then line the mould with cling film. 2. Brush the sheets of pastry one by one with melted butter and use nearly all of them to line the ring mould. Overlap the pastry sheets slightly as you go and repeat the layers 3-4 times. Leave the excess pastry to drape over the side of the mould. 3. Mix the salmon, monkfish and prawns in a large bowl and stir in the lemon juice and chopped dill. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Spoon the fish mixture into the pastry-lined mould, pressing down gently. Fold the excess pastry in over the filling and top with more buttered sheets of pastry, cutting them to fit and completely cover the filling. Stamp small star shapes out of any remaining sheets of buttered pastry and place on a plate. 5. Cover the ring mould and the plate with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour (or overnight). Carefully invert the ring mould onto a large baking sheet and then remove the mould and the cling film. Re-melt any remaining butter and brush all over the pastry. 6. Bake in a preheated oven at 190C/fan 170C/Gas Mark 5 for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Bake the pastry stars on a separate baking sheet for 5 minutes until golden. 7. Allow the wreath to stand for 5 minutes then transfer to a serving platter and decorate with the pastry stars. Garnish with lemon wedges and dill sprigs.

TIP: Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so simply cut to fit. Don’t worry if they tear, just place another piece of buttered pastry on top to cover the tear.

Allotments & gardens Show THE show of the year - get planning for 2018 A hall full of glorious flower displays, scrumptious sponges, vegetables, jams and pickles, children’s crafting of a mini allotment on a tray – there was so much to admire at the recent Town Garden and Allotments Show. A day full of surprises! It was also a special occasion as the family of Mr. Bean, who was a founder member of the Allotment Association and was Secretary during the 1950’s, came along and enjoyed a family reunion at the Show and very kindly donated a new Floral Cup in his name. They intend to make the Show an annual event for the family!

To experience the thrill of entering this Show and the anticipation of winning is something not to be missed – also there is no tweeting of the results head of time in this Show!! So you can have something to plan during some of the dark damp days of winter, the date for this wonderful Show next year is: Saturday 1st September. Keep a look out for information in CM21 magazine as to when the schedule will be available.

When: Sat 1st September 2018 Where: Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall email: hazelmead404@btinternet.com iandbarnard@aol.com
