WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe march edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION Have you noticed the mornings and afternoons are slowly getting lighter? I’m up at the crack of dawn to drive my husband to the station and it is such a pleasure to see a chink of daylight first thing and know that spring is on its way. It won’t be long before I’ll be watching the sunrise on my journey back home - what a glorious way to start the day! On that note, a timely reminder. Don’t forget the clocks will spring forward an hour at 1am Sunday 29th March. But before that, another date for your diary Sunday 15th Mothering Sunday! As a mum, I think the biggest gift to give and receive is your time - it costs nothing but means everything. A huge thank you to PCSO Stephen Siggers for his inaugural contribution to the magazine which has resurrected the Policing our Community page (yey!). And thanks also to PCSO Kim Wood for her contribution, very grateful to you both - thank you!

Pub Walks Combining Walks in our local country side with our lovely village pubs makes for a perfect day...
Daffodills in Debden This short walk takes in spring gardens in a pretty village, country lanes and budding woods. Turn left out of the Plough at Debden and walk about 100m along the road; then turn left again onto a public footpath between garden fences, just before creamy-yellow Pleasant House. The path soon bends right over a little footbridge. Cross this and turn left immediately along the edge of a field towards a farm. Turn left onto farm track between metal barn and wooden fence and then right along a lane. Follow the lane for nearly a mile, passing some picturesque houses. When the lane forks, in front of a whitewashed, thatched cottage, turn right downhill on a track and follow as it curves round a small woodland pond. Keep trees on right and go straight until you reach a shed and, just beyond it, take a sharp right into the woods through a gate. Follow the main path out of the woods again and across a field, down towards the lake in Debden Park. Turn right as soon as you have crossed the bridge and take the muddy path to the church. Walk through the churchyard and straight on up the lane beyond into Debden, passing the Yuva restaurant (another great place for lunch). Follow the right hand lane from the village pump to return to the Plough, with its cosy bar and delicious food. For longer walks in the area, use OS map 195 and the guidebook below to follow the Harcamlow Way from Debden, along blossom-fringed paths to Newport, or via woods and rivers to colourful Thaxted.

POLICING OUR PCSO 6142 Stephen Siggers
PCSO 6092 Kim Wood Hello,
Hello All, My name is Kim Wood and I am the local PCSO for Bishops Stortford town centre. I have been patrolling the town centre for 2 years and work alongside PCSO Adam Pemberton and PCSO Fallon Collins but before that I was working with Stephen Siggers for 3 years on Bishops Stortford North. In Bishops Stortford town centre we mainly patrol the shops and businesses to deter shoplifting going on in the town. We work closely with these and a lot of the shops are signed up to our shop watch scheme which provides good links and communication between the police and businesses in order to help each other out. We also have a
This is the first time that I have written for the CM23 Magazine and I have included two articles for you, the first is a reminder about telephone Scams and the second is about the Slow for Schools Initiatve that we ran last year to try and help with the problems around parking and speeding vehicles outside our schools. My colleague PCSO Leon De Bruyn has recently moved from being “The Face” of Bishops Stortford Town Centre for the past 8 years and is now bringing his vast experience to the residents of Sawbridgeworth. LOCAL COMMUNITY TELEPHONE SCAMS Residents across Hertfordshire, and nationally, have been receiving phone calls from people claiming to be from the police or their bank. The caller says they are investigating fraudulent activity on people’s accounts. They request people’s help in investigating the fraud and ask people to disclose their bank details, such as account and PIN numbers. Correctly, the majority of people identify this as a scam and refuse to part with their personal and bank details. However, unfortunately some have fallen victim to this scam and subsequently had thousands of pounds stolen from their account. Whilst arrests and convictions are continuing to be made, offenders are still targeting vulnerable and older people - the majority of people targeted are aged over 60. It is therefore vital that these people in particular are aware of the scam, so please share this information with your neighbours and relatives. HOW DOES THE SCAM WORK? The offender calls the victim, purporting to be a police officer, and tells them they are investigating a fraud on their bank account and have someone arrested. They might also claim to be from the victim’s bank, again stating they are investigating fraudulent activity on their account. The offender asks for account information, including card, security and PIN numbers. Sometimes the offenders will ask victims to ‘key in’ their PIN number into the phone – the number is then captured by the offenders. They may also ask the victim to withdraw a large sum of cash from their bank or building society. If they make this request they will explain that the money is required as it needs to be forensically examined. They also instruct the victim not to tell the bank why they are withdrawing the money, giving the reason that the bank might be involved in the fraud. The victim is then instructed to put the bank cards and/ or money into an envelope and give them to a courier
or taxi, which is sent to the house by the offenders to collect the items. If bank cards are collected they will be later used by the offenders to withdraw money. In some cases the victim might become suspicious and doubt the validity of what the caller is saying. If this happens, the offender will suggest they call the police via 999 or 101 or contact their bank in order that the victim can confirm the caller’s identity. However, what the victim doesn’t realize is that the caller hasn’t hung up so the line remains open, even if the victim hangs up, so the victim is put straight back through to the offender who will then pretend to be another person. This ‘new’ person will then validate the original caller’s claims. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU GET A CALL? If you receive a call you’re not expecting, you should be suspicious. The vital things to remember are that your bank and the police would: • NEVER ask for your bank account details or PIN number over the phone, so do not disclose these to anyone, no matter who they claim to be. • NEVER ask you to withdraw money and send it to them via a courier, taxi or by any other means. • NEVER ask you to send your bank cards, or any other personal property, to them via courier, taxi or by any other means. If you are not happy with a phone call and are suspicious of the conversation you have with the caller then please end the call and contact police via the nonemergency number, 101. Remember, when reporting a suspicious phone call to police, wait at least five minutes before attempting to make the call to ensure you’re not reconnected to the offender. Alternatively, use a mobile phone or a neighbour’s phone or test your landline by phoning a friend or relative first, to ensure you aren’t still unwittingly connected to the offender.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING
Smoked Haddock Kedgeree 350g smoked haddock fillet 4 large eggs 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed tsp ground coriander tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp mild curry powder 300g easy-cook basmati rice 3tbsp fresh chopped coriander
Just a few ingredients are needed to make this simple rice dish but it’s full of flavour! It’s ideal for a quick and easy supper or filling weekend brunch served with crusty bread or warmed mini naan breads, if liked.
1. Place the haddock in a large pan, cover with plenty of cold water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 5-6 minutes until the fish just flakes. Boil the eggs in a small pan of water for 7-8 minutes. 2. Remove the fish with a slotted spoon and flake the flesh discarding any skin and bones. Strain the cooking liquid into a jug – you’ll need about 600ml so top up with water if needed. Run the boiled eggs under cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove the shells and cut into wedges. Set aside. 3. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the onion and garlic over a medium heat for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the spices and cook for 1 minute then add the basmati rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually pour in the reserved stock and bring to the boil. 4. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes or until the rice is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Gently stir in the flaked haddock, eggs and coriander and heat through for 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately. TIPS: Add a large handful of baby spinach leaves or some fried mushrooms just before the end of cooking to make this dish more substantial.

March in the woods The birchanger wood trust By Daphne Wallace-Jarvis
Well, when March arrives, our beautiful wood anemones could be flowering - a wonderful carpet of white petals with dark green foliage, across the woodland floor. The date for their appearance can be in March or April since their appearance is dependent upon weather conditions during these months. Those of you who purchased the Stop Stansted Expansion calendar for 2015 will see a beautiful photograph of our wood anemones decorating their page for the month of April. The Trust is just completing its first year of operations using the new Compound. This has turned out really well, with the minor exception that with the arrival of winter 2014/15, the Compound has been overwhelmed by very muddy ground conditions impeding the use of machinery, the manufacture of tree protection baskets and general work in the Compound has been extremely difficult, the collection of wood for sale, rather ‘interesting’ and has prevented the regular use by St Elizabeths Special School, our other local voluntary groups and individuals. We are therefore seeking funds to purchase some 40 tons of fine granite, a liner membrane and to pressuretreated wood to retain it and thereby overcome this issue. Even by having our own inimitable woodland volunteers to carry out this heavy task, we need to raise £2,000 for the materials. So far we have been promised of £500 from Herts County Council and £750 from the Bishop’s
Stortford Town Council. Any other help will be very gratefully received. The mud is not affecting the paths, so please continue your normal activities. In addition you will be very welcome to visit the Compound on a Saturday and meet the voluntary woodland workers. If you wish to make a donation to Birchanger Wood, this can be done through the Paypal donation button on our web-site, www. birchangerwoodtrust.org or in person by cheque or cash by visiting the Compound, at Birchanger Wood’s main entrance, by the Water Tower. This is usually open on a Saturday from 9am-10am and 2pm-3pm - take the public footpath off Heath Row, approximately opposite house no.148, up to the Compound. The Bishop’s Stortford Town Council has always been a champion and supporter of The Birchanger Wood Trust and their Annual Council Meeting is to be held on 31 March 2015. They extend an invitation to you as members of the community to come along and support them 7.30pm at the Rhodes Centre.
