WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe june edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION The summer season of events aka ‘Stortford Summerfest’ begins in earnest this month and will last until the end of the season. I for one am really looking forward to all of the events that will be taking place; I’ll be going to the Stortford Carnival for the first time and also Cazfest (OK, that’s in July but hey ho!) - can’t wait! I’ll be armed with my waterproofs: coat and leggings... always best to be prepared! And there’s plenty of events going on indoors too - take a look at our “what’s on” pages in the coming months to see if anything tickles your fancy! Anyone for a paddle? Is the refurbished paddling pool a hit or a miss? I’m hearing very favourable things about it now that it’s up and running... pop along to our Facebook page and let us know your thoughts... Until next month, Lorraine PS Happy Father’s Day to all Dads and Father figures - thanks for all that you do! (Sunday 21st June!) property column Colour - a home sellers best friend... If you’re living in Bishop’s Stortford and thinking of selling your home, you may have started thinking about ‘selling prep’. This is a term used by lots of estate agents in Bishop’s Stortford and it refers to getting your home ship-shape and ready to sell. You might have been considering giving the garden a facelift, maybe even putting in an extension or a new bathroom or kitchen. There are so many options when it comes to adding as much value as possible to your home (read our post “How to add value and sell faster”) but believe it or not, adding a splash of colour makes a huge difference too. Here are our top tips for using colour to really show off your home for sale: 1. Give your front door some love Is your front door looking a bit shabby and in need of TLC? Giving it a fresh lick of paint not only makes your door happy but can drastically improve the look of the frontage of your property too. We find that blue, green and red are the best colours to go for if you want maximum impact. 2. Skirting board and ceiling touch-ups I know as a colour link this seems tenuous but giving your skirting boards and ceilings a fresh lick of white paint can have a surprising effect on the neat appearance of a room. We often neglect to pay attention to these areas but remember buyers look EVERYWHERE. 3. Small space? No worries! If you don’t live in an 8 bedroom mansion it can be hard to create the illusion of space, especially with all your bits and pieces floating about. Our top tip for cosy-sized homes is to keep your colour scheme light and bright. Magnolia, pale duck egg blue, salmon pinks and

even pale greens and greys are all great if you’re keeping up with interior trends. Banishing dark paint will illuminate your rooms and make them look bigger. 4. It’s not all about paint Adding colour doesn’t have to be about getting the paintbrush out. Adding contemporary wallpaper as a feature in a dining room or bedroom is on trend and is a slightly less messy way to give your rooms some personality on the cheap. 5. Colourful furnishings This is probably one of the cheapest ways to impress your buyers subliminally when they come to view your home, particularly if you live in a new build property. New-build tend to be decorated as a very blank canvas to appeal to as many people as possible, but this can come across as bland. So to push past the plain look, accessorise with bright scatter cushions, feature ornaments, bright flowers and lampshades to give your rooms a pick-me-up. It can be hard to know when to stop when it comes to preparing your home, so it’s best to ask a friend to help you focus on between 1 and 3 rooms that need attention the most. Adding a splash of colour can make you, and your potential buyers, feel happy even on a down day so try out some of these techniques and let us know how you get on! We’d love you to tweet us some pictures of your colour experiments to @ PPropertyShop. Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Thaxted Cobbled Lanes Thaxted, with its cobbled lanes and colourful cottages, is a beautiful town at any time of year. In the summer it hosts an annual music festival, starting this year on June 19th. For a short stroll from the Swan cross the road and head into Watling Lane next to the UMW Coffee Shop. Follow the lane right downhill and, at the very end, turn sharp left across the winding River Chelmer and walk back along the other side of the river. Keep following the path, with the river on your left, eventually crossing a road. After the road, take the next path left, doubling back along the river a little way and then turning right and left along hedge-side tracks up to the brick windmill on the hill above. John Webb’s windmill, built in 1804, next to spire of the John the Baptist church makes a scenic skyline. Approach the church past the windmill, through colourful alms-houses, and go inside to admire the huge airy windows and carved corbels. The Swan is over the road. For a much longer walk, you can follow the Harcamlow Way for ten miles to Hatfield Forest, past the ruined abbey at Tilty. Or head westwards to Debden and Newport.

LOCAL CHARITIES Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank

If you have a small local charity, non-funded or not-for-profit organisation you feel deserves some exposure contact us and we’ll see what we can do.

Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank operates from the rear of the Methodist Church in South Street, Monday to Friday 10am - 12.30pm. We provide food parcels to people who are in a crisis situation that means they cannot pay for food themselves. The nature of the crisis varies from person to person, but is often associated with delays in being paid or receiving benefits, unexpected bills, debt repayments, homelessness or sickness. In the last year we have provided food for over 650 people. People in need can obtain food from the food bank if they have been issued with a voucher by an authorised organisation. These include agencies such as the CAB, Circle Anglia, Bishop’s Stortford Money Advice Service, YMCA, East Herts Council and local Children’s Centres. These agencies will be aware of the person’s situation because they are helping them to overcome the difficulties they are experiencing. In most circumstances a maximum of three vouchers can be issued in a six month period. Those who bring a voucher to the Food Bank will be given food for themselves and their family for a three day period. The food includes: tinned meat, fish, fruit and vegetables; soup; pasta or rice; cereals, sugar, tea or coffee; long life milk and fruit juice. We are unable to give out perishable

items because of storage issues, but do provide toiletries where they are needed. People visiting the Food Bank can access information about other organisations that may be able to help them with their problems. We are able to directly refer them to the CAB and they can access the websites of advice and welfare organisations whilst at the food bank through the Joining the Dots project, which is funded by the Big Lottery. All the food given out by the food bank is donated by the public and there are drop bins for customers located in Sainsbury, Tesco and Waitrose supermarkets across the town. Food can also be donated directly to the food bank at the Methodist Church. Most of our funding comes from donations and fundraising events.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING BARBECUED RACK OF RIBS

2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip) 6 tbsp tomato ketchup 3 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp sunflower oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

PRE-COOKING

RIBS IN A PAN OF SIMMERING

WATER BEFORE PLACING THEM ON THE BARBECUE WILL ENSURE MELTINGLY TENDER MEAT EVERY TIME.

THIS

METHOD ALSO SAVES SPACE ON THE

BARBECUE AS THE FINAL COOKING TIME WITH THE SAUCE IS MUCH SHORTER.

SERVE

WITH A SPICY

CHUNKY TOMATO SALSA, IF LIKED.

1. Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. 3. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce. 4. Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill. TIP: Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.

king’s cottages Almshouses with a ‘unique’ history

King’s Cottages, the almshouses in South Road, Bishop’s Stortford, opposite the Rhodes Centre, have their ‘unique’ foundations rooted in the town’s history. Built more than a century ago on a field owned by Charles Hawkes of the brewing family, the twenty cottages in five blocks have undergone extensive modernisation and improvement over the years. During that time they have been home to generations of people from the town and surrounding area. The first two blocks opened in September 1906 and were funded by Sir Walter Gilbey in memory of his wife. They were designed by architect JS Cooper, built by Charles Martin, a founder of the Bishop’s Stortford Working Men’s Club, and named in recognition of King Edward VII’s visit to the town. Three further blocks were built over the next eight years, being donated by the children of the Reverend Frederick Vander-Meulen, then rector of Thorley. King’s Cottages are unique in that they are thought to be the only almshouses in

22

Hertfordshire dating from the early 1900s to be formed under the terms of a trust. In an unusual step for the time, when most were foundations by individuals, Sir Walter Gilbey formed a trust for the benefit of managing and running them. That trust continues to the present day with Sir Walter’s grandson, also Walter, as its chairman. A commemorative history booklet has been commissioned by the King’s Cottages Trustees and is available from the Tourist Information Centre in Market Square, Bishop’s Stortford, at £1 per copy. All proceeds go to support the charitable trust.
