HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe september edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION

CONNECTION

Whether it’s to a sigh of relief or tear filled eyes, we say farewell to the summer holidays and hello to the new school year! Which, for many of us working parents, means a return to “normality” (or sanity!) - it will be a whole year before we have to worry about the logistical nightmare again and before we hear those nerve jangling words “what are we going to do today?”. September is the start of the new school year, which promises new beginnings and new opportunities but it doesn’t have to be the domain of the younger student. There are many courses for mature students that are enrolling in September and many are featured in this month’s edition. Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw or paint? Learn a language or to arrange flowers? Make balloon decorations or art? Take up beekeeping? Become a qualified Beauty Therapist? Join a voluntary group or a friendship group? Well, this is your month to take action. I read a quote from a 93 year old New Yorker who said “... something amazing happens every time I force myself to go outside...”. Until next month, Lorraine

Pub & café Walks

Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

SAFFRON WALDEN A late summer stroll through lovely Saffron Walden and Audley End can be combined with a leafy hike to neighbouring Newport. The 301 bus can take you straight back to the start or to Bishop’s Stortford (Monday to Saturday). From Molly’s Cake Shop, head past Cross Keys onto High Street and turn left, then right into Abbey Lane. At end of road, go through metal gate into Audley Park and take path slightly left with tall trees along it to emerge through another gate onto Audley End Road. Turn right along side of road and turn left where white signpost points left to “College of St Mark”. Turn left again through gate (marked “Private: Donrobin Farms”, but it is a public path) and follow this lane to road. Cross over road and follow track ahead. 50m beyond power lines turn right over stream and immediately left on wooded path. Keep stream on left, cross B1052 and walk on through trees, then right hand edge of field into more trees. Turn left over footbridge and right along edge of wood. Follow path, keeping trees on right. Turn right over another bridge and take path beyond between fence and trees. Cross a third footbridge and keep straight up right hand edge of field. At corner of field, turn left with hedge on right and follow way-marked path around edge of wood and down right hand edge of large field. Go on through little tree tunnel and downhill. At foot of hill, turn right along wooded path beside stream and continue in same general direction with glimpses ahead of Newport’s distant church. The grassy path eventually becomes a lane and leads under railway to main road. Turn left along Belmont Hill onto Newport’s picturesque High Street, where you will find bus stop. LOCATION:

We host regular indoor meetings with illustrated talks on topics of wildlife interest from invited speakers. These are held at Bishop‘s Park Community Centre, Lancaster Way, Bishop’s Park, Bishop’s Stortford, CM23 4DA (next to Tesco) on the second Tuesday of every month, September to June, at 7.30pm. We also organise outdoor walks and trips to nature reserves and other wildlife spectacles.

Our guided bird watching walks, which take place most months, are free except for parking or entry fees/donations. Our Field Trip Co-ordinator takes us to a wide variety of places, both near and far. We take part in the Bishop’s Stortford carnival and hold at least one major fund-raising event each year. We have put up bird boxes in the town park and organised a trail for local schools to follow and learn about the local wildlife.

For more information about our group, including details about our next talk, meeting times and costs, please visit: www.rspb.org.co.uk/groups/stortvalley. The birchanger wood trust What’s happening in the woods in September... by Trust Secretary Daphne Wallace-Jarvis

September and a great time to walk in the ancient woodland of Birchanger Wood, whether this be in the smaller woodland on the Birchanger/Stansted side of the Wood which is accessed from Birchanger, or, in the larger woodland accessed from Heath Row on the Bishop’s Stortford side. Our lovely paths will enable you, your children and your dogs to enjoy the woodland without becoming embroiled in mud. Whichever part of Birchanger Wood you are walking in and if the day is warm and damp, look down on the woodland floor and you should see some of the many fungi just waiting to be photographed. Alternatively, Look upwards and listen and you may hear our local buzzards in flight calling to one another. On approaching the Wood from Birchanger, they can often be seen as well as heard owing to the open farmland all around.

Our Woodland needs you!! Volunteers: come along to the Compound in Birchanger Wood, Take the footpath off Heath Row which leads to the Water Tower and the woodland main entrance, on a Saturday between 9-10am and 2-3pm and meet Pat Forrest our volunteer warden. Buy your firewood from the Compound same times. Meet the sanctuary hedgehogs. £10 per wheelbarrow load, or £70 per cubic metre.

Our volunteer Warden is looking for other Volunteers please to assist in the Birchanger Wood maintenance. Be a lumberjack for a couple of hours on a Saturday; help lay a path for the tractor in the Compound (we need to get this down before the winter rains arrive); sell some wood.

Hatfield Heath Bridge Club making new friends, THAT’S what learning BRIDGE IS ALL ABOUT We are very lucky in our area as there are bridge clubs that meet every day of the week except Saturday. Most, like our classes meet in the evening but there is one very popular club that meets on a Tuesday afternoon. All are pleased to welcome new members, our Friendly Friday Bridge Club which was started for new and improving players especially so. People who come to classes sometimes want to learn how to play this fascinating game with friends who already play but they all end up making new friends as well. Bridge is a game of partnership and sometimes two people come to classes together but most form bridge partnerships from friends they make in class.

Hatfield Heath Bridge Club members tend to be sociable people. As well as playing bridge each week we run a quiz and a dinner dance annually. In addition the many new friends we have made through classes have regular social bridge evenings, barbecues, weekends and holidays away. If this strikes a chord with you please do contact Penny or Brian via email: hassells2@gmail.com or call us on 01279 721428 / 07713 411 305.

Classes run for twelve weeks in the autumn and then a further eighteen weeks in the winter and spring finishing at the end of May. In the summer months we organise a simple competition which is played in people’s homes which introduces them to students from earlier years.

centenary the WI turns 100 By Alison Runham, www.alison.runham.co.uk

This month marks one hundred years since the first UK Women’s Institute (WI) meeting. As the WI celebrates its centenary, we look at its history and its role today. A Slow Start As the twentieth century began, few branches of the new AOS (Agricultural Organisation Society) welcomed women, and female attendees were often too afraid of ridicule to speak. Yet in Canada, the Farmer’s Institutes had inspired women to found WIs to share knowledge on farming and raising a family. The movement spread throughout Canada and to the USA, Poland and Belgium. However, in the UK, WIs weren’t established until the arrival of Madge Watt, a founder member of British Columbia’s first WI. Her speech about the vital contribution women could make to the war effort through working the land to grow food helped persuade the AOS to appoint her as founder of WIs in the UK. WIs would provide a hub for sharing knowledge about agriculture and home industries, and for social activities, but would initially focus on increasing food production to counter WW1 shortages. The first UK WI meeting was held on 16th September 1915 in Llanfair PG, and by 1918 there were 99 WIs. Soon the WI became independent from the Board of Agriculture; the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) was formed in October 1917 and began publishing its Home and Country magazine in 1919. With WW1 over, the WI urged members to become active citizens and stand for election at local and parliamentary level. In 1921 WI member Mrs Margaret Winteringham became the first English born female MP and the second woman in Parliament. By 1924, when Jerusalem was adopted as the WI song, there were 3,223 WIs.

18

1915 First WI meeting venue World War Two to Diamond Jubilee The WI had continued to support the League of Nations, and was preparing for war once again. Lady Denman, the WI chair, became Director of the Women’s Land Army in 1938 and WI Preservation Centres played a vital role, canning produce and making jam to turn over 5,300 tons of potential waste into food for the nation. Meanwhile, the NWFI’s 1941 report on evacuees, Town Children through Country Eyes, stimulated debate about families that ultimately resulted in the family allowances after the war. Queen Mary had become President of the Sandringham WI in 1919, and in 1943 her daughter Elizabeth joined the WI too. In 1945, the WI founded Denman College. With the war over, the WI spread its wings, beginning the fifties with a national music festival. Members also designed a house ideal for a working family for the Ideal home Exhibition (including a porch for muddy boots). 1965 was a significant year. The rule prohibiting the founding of WIs in places with populations over 4,000 was abolished, and representatives from 8,700 WIs celebrated the WI’s Golden Jubilee at a special garden party at Buckingham Palace. WIs also compiled Scrapbooks of the Countryside, now held in Local Record Office archives. The sixties ended with performances of The Brilliant and the Dark, an NFWI-commissioned musical following women’s lives throughout the centuries. In 1974 the number of WIs reached an all-

celebrations time high of 9,309, just in time to celebrate the institution’s Diamond Jubilee in 1975. At the AGM that year, the NFWI confirmed its belief in ‘the principle of equality of opportunity and of legal status for men and women’ and pledged it would continue to work towards it. A Thoroughly Modern Institution In the 1980s, the WI made its first appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show and launched a three year campaign to raise the profile of the WI, culminating in the WI Life and Leisure Exhibition at Olympia in 1984, opened by the Queen. There was a growing awareness of modern technology and current concerns as the WI moved into the 1990s and it campaigned with partners on several issues, including a project to promote sport as part of a healthy lifestyle. Significantly, in 1999 the WI joined with the National Farmers’ Union to hold A Women in Farming conference, with an address given by The Princess Royal,

but perhaps what most overthrew its ‘jam and Jerusalem image’ was the widely reported response of many members to the Prime Minister’s address at their Triennial General Meeting in 2000. Feeling his speech was becoming a party political broadcast, they rewarded him with a slow handclap. However, the WI is still just as committed to preserving traditional skills as it is to addressing the issues of the day, as demonstrated by their Craft Spectacular exhibition in 2000. Today, the WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, with 212,000 members and 6,600 WIs. It still strives to provide women with educational opportunities and campaigns on issues that affect all women and their communities, from equal pay and better midwifery to climate change and the plight of the honey bee, and over the last 100 years it has effected genuine change. So happy birthday, WI; thank you for all you have done, and long may you continue.

A Right Royal celebration Our Queen becomes the longest reigning Monarch in the history of the UK on the 9th September 2015 and we feel Bishop’s Stortford would want to celebrate this achievement and mark her glorious reign in suitable fashion. A Band Concert seemed the most appropriate. There will be lots of familiar, often stirring pieces played by the 28-piece award-winning Ware Brass. There is a tenor soloist too, and he will lead you in some wellknown standards as one element of the programme. We will toast Her Majesty in the interval in the adjoining Church Hall. All proceeds of the event are dedicated to the Isabel Hospice - so help us “raise the roof” and raise funds for the Hospice too!! This all happens on Saturday 5th September at the United Reformed Church, Water Lane, Bishop’s Stortford at 8pm. Tickets are £15 each to include wine and nibbles and can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre or from Gwenda Deal 01279 863194.
