WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe october of THE CM23 CONNECTION

THE

CM23 CONNECTION

As I write, we’re meant to be experiencing an Indian Summer... It’s 9.25am and I have the lights on because it’s so dark outside! We’re meant to be having snow this winter and we should have had a blazing summer. Hmm. Just can’t take things for granted can you. Take me for instance. Just back from two weeks holiday, refreshed and raring to go. The magazines had been shortlisted in two categories at the Harlow Business & Community Awards - Social Media/ Website and Best Small Business (I know, dead exciting!) and I had two presentations to prepare and present. On the day of the first presentation I wake up looking like I had gone ten rounds with Frank Bruno - swollen eye and boil like spots all down one side of my face! What on earth - didn’t see that coming and certainly hadn’t planned for it! Cue dark glasses and hair parted on the other side - the show went on! After the second presentation the following day (and a visit to the Doctors) I went to bed and pretty much stayed there for a week! I had planned for everything except for my health throwing me a plot twist. I will however, factor that in the next time I’m required to do a presentation and certainly won’t take it for granted again!

Until next month, Lorraine

Pub & café Walks

Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Woodland Walk A beautiful place in any season, the National Trust’s estate at Wimpole Hall makes a particularly lovely setting for a colourful, autumn walk. It is free to explore everywhere but the house and formal gardens, although nonmembers will need to pay to park. There are lots of scenic paths around the estate. This taster is one of the best for woodland. Go through gate opposite entrance to stable block, walk past the chapel and mansion through another gate. Follow the fence and go through a third gate. Head diagonally right over a gentle hill, cross the Iron Bridge, and walk towards the ornamental lakes and gothic folly beyond. Cross Chinese bridge between lakes and turn left by the water, then right along edge of fields below folly. Keep going along field edge path and through gate. At woods cross bridge and turn left through trees. Simply follow this path through the trees all the way back to the top of an avenue and turn left again, down towards the house. Energetic walkers might like to follow the “Wimpole Way” all the way to Cambridge. You can find a map here: www.visitcambridge.org/ dbimgs/WimpoleWay.pdf Transport: On Sundays, occasional bus services run direct from outside Cambridge Railway Station to Wimpole Hall www.scambs.gov.uk/ bikebus-explorer. Local charities Meet The Bishop’s Stortford fundraisers The Bishop’s Stortford Fundraisers are a group of likeminded people who spend their spare time raising money for various local charities and good causes. The group formed in January 2010, and over the course of 5 years have raised circa £50,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, providing 2,500 valuable nursing hours care to terminally ill patients in Hertfordshire. The Bishop’s Stortford Fundraisers achieved this by organising and running many events, from 5k walks to quiz nights, street collections, and taken on nationwide challenges from skydiving to cycling around the streets of London at night. The group is formed of 6 people – whilst some have come and gone in the 5 years, 2 of the group are founding members and they all live in Bishop’s Stortford.

Residential, in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. The ball is taking place on Friday 20th November at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Stansted. There will be a 3 course dinner, live music and an auction. Further event and ticket information can be found at the group’s website: www.bsfundraisers.co.uk. Plans are beginning to take shape for events in 2016 and an Elvis Tribute evening has been planned for March. We would love to hear from you if you are keen to support us, join the group, or volunteer your time.

In March 2015, the group switched focus from just one charity and decided to “share the love” and raise money for different charities. This recently beared fruit for Isabel Hospice, where the group raised over £1,200 for them with a Cliff Richard tribute evening at a local school. A second Cliff Richard tribute evening raised over £1,000 for the Little Princess Trust. Over the next few months the group are hosting a Team Quiz in aid of the Willow Foundation on Saturday 17th October and a Winter Ball in association with local estate agents, Charles David

bishop’s stortford sinfonia Beethoven and Dvorak in Stortford: An Evening of Live Classical Music

What better way to spend an autumn evening than experiencing all the charm, grace and drama of a live professional orchestra? With great pleasure, Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia, a brand new professional orchestra, invites you to its debut performance, where it will perform two much-loved orchestral classics, Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and the Dvorak Cello Concerto. This new orchestra aims to give Bishop’s Stortford something few towns can boast: professional-level concerts of the standard usually reserved for the major cities. The orchestra is run by a group of local professional musicians led by Artistic Director Simon Gilliver, who grew up and went to school locally. Following on from its launch event, the orchestra plans to establish a concert series, adding an exciting ingredient to the town’s musical landscape. It also looks forward to forging

relationships with the local community and schools. So, come and listen to cello soloist Rachel Sanders-Hewett, and watch conductor Patrick Bailey, whose distinguished career has seen him work with many of the country’s finest orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra. It promises to be a night to remember.

apple day 2015 Keswick Codling apples developing on a 10 year old tree

rivers heritage site and orchard (RHSo)

The Rivers nursery was founded by John Rivers in 1725 and, when it closed in 1987, it was the oldest garden nursery in the UK. Many fruit cultivars and horticultural techniques were developed on the site in Sawbridgeworth, especially by Thomas Rivers (1798-1877) and Thomas Francis Rivers (1830-1899). The history of the site was documented by Elizabeth Waugh in the 2009 book Rivers Nursery of Sawbridgeworth based on the archives of the group and interviews with local people. Formed in May 2014, Rivers Heritage Site and Orchard (RHSO) is a volunteer group who work to protect, preserve and maintain the remaining Rivers Nursery site in Sawbridgeworth, UK and also to maintain the historical information about the Rivers Nursery in the group’s archives. With close links to Sawbridgeworth Town Council we seek to continue the excellent work of previous volunteers on the current Rivers site. The former nursery site is private land but RHSO is allowed access to maintain the orchard by permission of the landowner. The site can be accessed through a number of public or permissive footpaths from Sawbridgeworth or High Wych. It is currently used by many local people for walking and peaceful enjoyment! Apple Day 2015 is RHSO’s main community event held in the Rivers Orchard. We invite anyone from the local community and beyond to

join us to help pick our apple crop. In exchange, pickers may taste our many apple varieties and take some home for themselves. Those who do not wish to pick may purchase apples in the orchard on the day. The day promises to be a festival and fun for the whole family. We hope to expand on the success from last year where over 300 people, including many young children enjoyed a day of fruit picking in our beautiful location. Feel free to bring a picnic to eat in our beautiful environment. In addition to picking apples, there will be: • Mint Cafe’s Ice Cream stall • Light refreshments (tea, coffee, cake) • Apple pressing demonstrations • Live music • History displays of the Rivers Nursery • Fruit identification • Apple tasting • Children’s activities

The team from fruitID will be in attendance throughout the day. You are invited to bring any apples or pears from your own trees to be identified. Identification can require several fruits at varying stages of ripeness. Please follow the guidelines when selecting your fruit and complete the fruitID form (found on our website - www.rhso.co.uk/identify.php).

Cue Tease Burlesque is excited to present Sadie and The Variety Society; an outstanding evening of Burlesque and Cabaret which will be debuting at the Rhodes Theatre, Bishops Stortford on 17th October 2015. Royal British Legion Poppy appeal 2015: live On October is upon us and heralds the Launch of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal nationwide. This year’s Remembrancetide runs from Saturday 24th October to Sunday 8th November. As in previous years Bishop’s Stortford will be launching our Poppy Appeal in Jackson Square shopping centre with veterans and service personnel from the local area collecting on behalf of the Armed Forces. The Royal British Legion created the Poppy Appeal to help with those returning from the First World War. As we mark the Centenary of the First World War, it’s as important as ever to wear a poppy and remember the sacrifices and commitment made by our Armed Forces both then and now. The message behind this year’s Poppy Appeal is Live On – to the memory of the fallen and future of the living, which captures perfectly why it’s so important to donate to the appeal and wear a poppy. The money raised through the Poppy Appeal goes directly to The Royal British Legion’s welfare work providing life care to anyone who is currently serving in the British Armed Forces, who has previously served, and their families.

have a very active branch of the Royal British Legion and a very generous community showing their support for this very special charity. Last year was a very special year with the focus on the Centenary of The First World War brought into the public eye with the amazing installation of the Poppy display at the Tower of London. With this in mind our local collection exceeded all expectations last year and we hope to build on that awareness with our collection this year. Behind the scenes the team at the local Poppy Appeal office work very hard from June onwards preparing for the launch and we are always looking for willing volunteers to help out with various roles during the Appeal. If you feel that you could spare a couple of hours to help please contact the Poppy Appeal Organiser for Bishop’s Stortford, Gina Goold - contact details bottom of page. Thank you.
