WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe november of THE CM23 CONNECTION Who else thinks that the year is now freewheeling to its end? I don’t know if it’s due to the nature of my work (I’m always planning at least 2-3 months ahead) but it feels that once bonfire night is over, Christmas will be upon us. I blame the shops for starting to display their Halloween and Christmas products back in the summer. It was quite discreet at first wasn’t it, tucked away in the least visited corners... and now it’s BAM! Christmas sweets and treats everywhere! I love it though. I love the onset of the new seasons and the opportunities to celebrate that each of them brings. With winter heading our way and Christmas just round the corner, we’ll start to pack away our gardens and prepare our homes. Stock up on food and drink and look forward to nights snuggled with our loved ones... Stop. Who am I trying to kid! The reality for most of us is quite different isn’t it? Rush, rush, rushing as apposed to chill, chill, chilling! Fortunately, there are lots of trades, local services and events in this month’s edition that may just help make November a little easier... Until next month, Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

November in Newport The Coach and Horses in Newport is an old inn with a huge open fire in its beamed bar. This late autumn walk (best in dry weather) will help you deserve a fireside pint. Turn left out of the pub along the main road, left again along Bridge End, and left once more, before the railway bridge, along a path that swings left to a track. Keep walking along the valley for half a mile and follow the path into trees. When you reach a little, wooden footbridge on your right, cross over it and head up the path ahead through a patch of woodland (mud after rain!) to emerge on a road. Cross over and follow the path leading right round the field on the far side. Keep hedges and fences on your right and follow them zigzagging all the way downhill to Newport Station. Cross the bridge over the railway and keep ahead along Station road, turning right along the High Street to return eventually, via Bridge End, to the Coach and Horses. The High Street is lined with Georgian mansions and old cottages, including the late 15th century Monk’s Barn at number 56. The upper storey still has a beautiful oriel window with the original sill, carved to show a crowned Mary and Jesus, flanked by angels. St Mary’s church, left of the High Street, is also worth a look inside, for its 13th-century painted chest and brass memorials. Transport: Newport is just a twenty-minute train ride from Bishops Stortford. LOCATION:

rspca stort valley Would you like to help RSPCA Stort Valley help homeless cats? This is a special appeal for Fosterers needed for cats waiting for homes.

We are looking for dedicated and compassionate fosterers to join our team, and are appealing for anyone who has a space in their house for one or a pair of cats until a suitable home can be found. We are looking for people with no pets of their own - maybe you would love a cat of your own but don’t want the expense, or perhaps have to go away sometimes so having your own cat wouldn’t be practical? Or maybe you just like the idea of helping a cat.

RSPCA Stort Valley Branch Registered Charity No. 233908

would like more information about fostering cats that are waiting to go to a permanent home. We will be happy to visit you and have a chat to explain in more detail and don’t worry, an enquiry does not mean you have committed yourself. For further information about us please see our website at www.rspcastortvalley.org.uk

We will provide the food, litter and any out of pocket expenses and all equipment needed is supplied by us. What you will provide is your time and plenty of love. It is essential that you are home at least part of every day and you would need to live in the Harlow, Bishops Stortford or close surrounding areas so that it would be practical to bring the cats to our vet clinic in The Stow, Harlow when necessary. Your own transport would also be essential. This job can be demanding, tiring, at times emotional and should not be taken on by the faint hearted, it can also be extremely rewarding. Please phone our clinic or email us at with a contact number we can call you on if you

LOCAL CHARITIES If you have a small local charity, non-funded or not-for-profit organisation you feel deserves some exposure contact us and we’ll see what we can do.

Grove Cottage

Grove Cottage; the home of Bishops Stortford Mencap provides social and educational activities for people of all ages with learning disabilities; to develop potential, avoid social isolation by supporting lifelong friendships and to provide respite for their families. We run lots of different clubs including a PreSchool Playgroup, a Special Needs Nursery, a Youth Club, Saturday Clubs, School Holiday Clubs, Adult Social Clubs, a Performing Arts Club and a Get Active Club, a gardening club and a Speech and Language therapy programme. We also arrange and take some of our members away on residential breaks. We have over 150 members who attend Grove Cottage each week. Many people who have heard of Grove Cottage think we only offer activities for young children but our youngest member is only a few months old and our oldest was recently 80 and he was one of our founding members! We face 3 key challenges: Awareness; Grove Cottage is very proud to celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2016 and we work closely with the local community to raise awareness. Volunteers: Grove Cottage could not run without Volunteers. If you have time and skills to offer – we will put them to good use!

Funding: It costs over £200,000 to run Grove Cottage each year and we could not exist without the support of the local community. Although we are linked to Mencap we receive no funding from them. The future looks very exciting for Grove Cottage. We own our building at 151 London Road, Bishops Stortford but we are bursting at the seams. We are looking for a building to renovate or a plot of land to build on to enable us to grow our existing clubs and develop much needed life skills opportunities for adults with learning disability. To achieve our dreams costs money and we could not continue without the support of the local community. Thank you so much for your support and we hope to see you at our 50th Birthday celebrations in 2016.

A FILLING LUNCH OR SUPPER.

1. Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then add the diced vegetables and cover and cook gently for 5 minutes. 2. Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes. 3. Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (in batches if necessary) and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock. 4. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps and crushed coriander seeds. TIP: To make the parsnip crisps, use a potato peeler to shave long thin strips from one large peeled parsnip. Half fill a large deep frying pan with vegetable oil and heat until a cube of bread dropped in the hot oil browns in 30 seconds. Fry the strips of parsnip in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well on kitchen paper.

The birchanger wood trust What’s happening in the woods in November... by Trust Secretary Daphne Wallace-Jarvis

November, and the days of mists and damp are about. Many of our trees will already have lost their leaves, and these will be well carpeting the woodland floor sometimes making even our winding woodland paths more difficult to follow, however, even more will land in the remaining woodland where they will naturally decompose turning into useful compost and improving the ground for next year’s growth of trees and shrubs. In this month the climate - temperature and damp, together with increased insect habitat and the fungi exploitation will speed the decomposition of the fallen trees. November is also a beautiful month. Leaves remaining on the trees glow incredible reds, oranges and yellows in the sun. Broadleaf deciduous trees are preparing for winter’s onslaught. Their first job is to withdraw nitrogen and phosphorous from their leaves, to be stored in the roots until the following spring. This stops the production of chlorophyll that makes food for the tree from sunlight and in turn their green colouring fades and other pigments are revealed. Anthocyanins create the pinks, purples and reds of species such as dogwood, carotenoids the oranges and yellows of birch and ash, and tannins the browns and, when

mixed with carotenoids, the golden yellows found in English oak and beech leaves. Other trees to look out for include field maple that becomes a buttery yellow, alders are also yellow and the last to lose their leaves, rowans are orange-red. Hedgehogs will enter full hibernation this month as the temperatures drop and food becomes scarce, EXCEPT, for a number of hedgehogs which haven’t reached a minimum weight, or are disabled, and which have been brought to the Trust from the local hedgehog sanctuary to overwinter safe in the Birchanger Wood shedded enclosure. These hedgehogs will be fed each day by our Warden, Pat Forrest and the Trust wants to thank him for taking on this onerous task, and also all those local people who have so kindly provided donations of dog food to feed these endangered animals so they ‘make it through’ the winter. Buy your firewood from the Compound Saturday between 9-10am and 2-3pm. The cut wood costs £10 per wheelbarrow load, or £70 per cubic metre.
