WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe april/May edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION It’s a been a busy few months since I last wrote and I’ve even managed to tick some things off my “bucket list” - I went to see War of the Worlds - the music was just awesome and DAVID ESSEX was in it too! (He played the part of the soldier on the original album.) I am a WOTW geek! I also saw Adele play her first ever concert at the O2. Wow. Her personality matches her voice - great lady! I’m feeling very grateful and I hope that you’ve had some wonderful memory making moments these past few months too! We have something for everyone - cello and salsa lessons, hair extensions & pieces, carpets, appliance care, a pharmacy not to mention our loyal regular advertisers. I’d also like to wish Dental Smiles all the very best on the opening of their new dentistry in Takeley.

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Spring Flowers & Sculptures The charming village of Perry Green is home to dozens of extraordinary bronze sculptures. This walk gives you a chance to explore the landscape near the Henry Moore Foundation and enjoy some monumental masterpieces as well as buttercup-strewn meadows and woods full of bluebells. Cross the road and follow the public path to the right of Hoglands house, running along the edge of a small wood. Through the trees to your right, you can see the first sculptures. The “Large Figure in a Shelter” gleams coppery-gold from the next clearing. At the end of the trees, head right through a gate. Turn right along the next footpath, following the Hertfordshire Way, then left towards woods and left down the hill with woods to the right and left again along the valley path, with bluebells beside you. Just as you reach a road, turn sharply left back up through a band of trees and over some hilly fields, heading for the “Large Reclining Figure” silhouetted on the horizon. Shortly before you reach this bronze sculpture, rising nine meters off its manmade hill, turn right at a signpost and left between fenced clumps of trees. Go through the gate, across a track and head right towards the “Large Upright Form”, standing by a pond. Keeping the pond on your right, walk through a gate and over a bridge onto a little lane. Turn immediately left along the edge of a stream and follow this path back to the Hoops Inn. LOCATION:

local business people in person Name and Business: My name is Sarah Stephens of Sarah Stephens Photography. Where do you live? I live in Bishop’s Stortford and have done for nearly 20 years. What’s your favourite local shop? I think it’s great that we have Photosound, an independent camera shop, in town. You’ll often find me in Waterstones trying to resist more books! What’s your favourite local venue? Impossible to choose just one so... Cambio Lounge for their live music evenings, Coffee Corner for lattes and Rosy Lea’s for a great cup of tea. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I’ve started Pilates in the last 6 months and it
has made a huge difference to how I feel in myself. I like live music and the theatre and also love cooking. I set up my business because… It was the right time and place to do so. I needed something flexible to fit in with my family life and as my son grows more independent the business can grow too. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? The opportunity to photograph some 11th and 12thC objects at Canterbury Cathedral. I get up close with many amazing things as part of my work in the heritage sector. Favourite saying? Do more of what make you happy!

IT’s your community
the national childbirth trust the uk’s largest charity for parents
NCT Branches are your local parent support network, helping you become the parent you want to be. We know how important it is for parents to find the information they need to prepare for their new life. That’s why we offer a range of courses to support you through your transition. In the Bishop’s Stortford/Sawbridgeworth branch we have a variety of activities and events to support the local community including: first aid training, sling library meet ups, nearly new sales, monthly events, breastfeeding support and pre and postnatal classes. One of the key campaigns that NCT are involved in is #BeyondBabyBlues. NCT’s latest research reveals that almost one in five callers to our helpline had a mental health issue to discuss and over 35% had not spoken to a healthcare professional about it. With this in mind we will be doing more pop up style events so that we can engage more with local parents and carers, whether it be a baby café style meet up, new parent coffee group, buggy walk or parents night out, it is important to note that even if you are not a member of NCT most of our events are open to all (we will of course have some members only events too).
We publish a quarterly newsletter for our members. We are always on the lookout for articles – birth stories, what parenting is like for you, your baby’s favourite recipe and would also love to hear from you if you would like your baby’s birth announced. If you have a business and would be interested in being an advertiser, we have a variety of rates and options available. Please contact us on nctnewsletterbss@yahoo.co.uk We would love to hear from you if you would like to volunteer. Perhaps you might like to be Branch Secretary, be part of the NNS Team or the Events Team. Perhaps you might like to help making links with health professionals or even host a coffee morning. The list of opportunities is endless, and you can devote as much or little time as you want! If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please feel free to contact bishopsstortford@nct.org.uk Until next time… Sanchia Aronberg Branch Chair

live laugh love Foundation the buddy bag appeal Imagine if your whole world changed in a day. Imagine having to leave everything you own and everyone you know.
A matter of fact • You may be shocked to learn that 48,000 children require emergency accommodation in the UK each year. • Children fleeing violent situations often have to leave home quickly, without the chance to collect basic items. These children arrive in emergency accommodation with just the clothes they are wearing. • There are over 68,000 children in care in England. Almost 400,000 children received support from children’s services in England during 2014. Source: NSPCC web site Department of Education 2014
Buddy Bags for Children in Emergency Care We have created the Live Love Laugh Foundation in response to the rising number of children who enter emergency care after fleeing violent situations at home. Restoring a sense of safety and security into a child’s life during a traumatic time is one of the first steps to recovery. By providing these children with a few essential items, we can help make the transition into emergency care a little easier. To support children in this situation we have created the Buddy Bag to provide comfort when all else has been removed.

What is a Buddy Bag? A Buddy Bag is a backpack that contains all the essential items a child needs. They include toiletries, pyjamas, socks and underwear. They also include comfort items such as a book, a photo frame and a teddy bear. A Buddy Bag is something a child can call their own, no matter where they go. Buddy Bags are tailored to suit babies and children according to age groups and gender and cater specifically for children aged 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 and 13-16 years old. Purpose Our purpose is to provide 20,200 Buddy Bags to children who arrive in emergency accommodation without the essential items they need to help restore a sense of safety and security. How can I help? Due to the nature of our foundation and appeal, we’re always looking for help from individuals and businesses alike. Whether you have some spare time and skills, items or cash to donate, all is welcome. For more information please contact Angela Gakis, via contact details below.

live laugh love Foundation Where did the Buddy Bag idea come from?
During a visit to Australia in 2014 our founder, Karen Williams, was inspired by an article about The Alannah and Madeline Foundation (www.amf.org.au) which has delivered more than 50,000 Buddy Bags to children in emergency care in Australia since 2007. On returning to the UK, Karen researched the facilities available to children in emergency care and discovered a huge need for Buddy Bags in the UK. To ensure as many children as possible can benefit from the Buddy Bag scheme, Karen set up The Live Love Laugh Foundation and launched the Buddy Bag appeal in the UK, with the help and support of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING PORK JAMBALAYA 1 tbsp groundnut oil 100g chorizo sausage, sliced 350g pork loin steaks, cut into chunks 1 onion, peeled and chopped 3 celery stalks, trimmed and chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 2 tsp smoked paprika, plus extra for sprinkling 2 tsp Cajun seasoning 225g easy-cook long grain rice 700ml vegetable stock
COOKED
IN JUST ONE PAN AND ON THE TABLE
IN LESS THAN AN HOUR THIS IS A GREAT MIDWEEK
100g fine green beans, chopped
FAMILY SUPPER.
1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and diced
MIXED GREEN SALAD, IF LIKED.
SERVE WITH GARLIC BREAD OR A
1. Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the chorizo over a high heat until golden and the fat starts to run. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 2. Add the diced pork to the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time until browned. Remove and set aside with the chorizo. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion, celery and garlic for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. 3. Stir in the spices and rice and cook, stirring, over a medium heat for 2 minutes then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Return the pork to the pan and cover and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Stir in the chorizo, green beans and yellow pepper into the pan and cook, uncovered, for a further 6-7 minutes until the rice and vegetables are tender, adding a little more stock if necessary. Serve sprinkled with a little more smoked paprika and freshly ground black pepper.
TIP: You can replace the pork in this recipe with diced chicken breast fillet or boneless thigh fillets. Alternatively use large raw king prawns and add them to the pan in step 4 and cook until pink.

Donna’s many skills include British Sign Language. Her daughter Elisha is deaf and Donna has communicated with her from a very early age. She introduced us to ‘Signing Sam’ during the fostering panel process, which was a first for us! Donna and her family have a lovely home which has recently been refurbished and extended to enable her to care for the young people who we refer via the various local authorities that we work with. Children First are keen to promote diversity within our carer group and develop and support their personal skills. All of our carers have special skills and we are proud of all that they do. Donna’s approval means she can provide care for 2 children or, if they are siblings, she can accommodate 3 children. If you would like to find out more about becoming a foster carer, please get in touch and together we can make a positive difference. Donna and Elisha

Stroke association Make May purple for Stroke
The Stroke Association is calling on everyone in Bishop’s Stortford and surrounds to sign up to Make May Purple in 2016. During the month of May, the charity will be raising awareness of the impact of stroke and sharing information and advice on how to help prevent the condition with communities around the country. Many plans are already underway for Make May Purple and this year the Stroke Association wants Bishop’s Stortford to join in and raise awareness. Whether you chose to hold a bake sale, take part in an event or get sponsored to dye your hair, there are many easy ways for everyone to get involved. The main thing is to have fun, get people talking about Make May Purple and raise vital funds so that we can be there for more people affected by stroke.
Purple newsletter. Each edition provides updates on plans, ideas to help you Make May Purple and information on the new materials available to order. The range of free resources includes posters, stickers, order forms and a Make May Purple magazine packed full of ideas. Money raised during the month will help ensure that we can be there for the thousands of stroke survivors and their families and carers who need us. To find out more and sign up, please visit www.stroke.org.uk/makemaypurple
Someone in the UK has a stroke every three and a half minutes. A stroke can happen in an instant but its effects can last a lifetime. Yet too many people still don’t understand the impact of stroke or the fact that it can happen to anyone at any age. It’s easy to join in the fun and to be a part of a community that’s committed to changing the world for stroke. If you want to join in and help raise awareness of stroke you can sign up to receive the monthly Make May web: www.stroke.org.uk/makemaypurple www.stroke.org.uk/finding-support/phoenix-stroke-club-bishops-stortford www.stroke.org.uk/finding-support/bishops-stortford-be-yourself-group
