WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe June/July edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION Make the CM Connection your first selection for community views and business news! What do you think? A local Councillor tweeted this tag to me recently. Just about made my day! People can be so generous can’t they? Thank you Councillor Ian Beckett! I love it too when residents care enough to get in touch. It means that I’m doing something right and when I’m not, it provides me with the opportunity to put things right. Always a win/win and a positive in my book. After several messages querying events dates, I thought that you might like to know that CM23 can be viewed online from the 1st of the month via our website www.cmconnection.uk, so there is no reason to miss any dated events. We also actively promote local events on our Facebook page - which is great for any late entries that have missed the print deadline! Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Lavender in Letchworth This summery suggestion is a bit further away and more of an outing than a walk, but there are two great reasons for a visit to Letchworth in June or July: Cadwell Lavender Farm, with a lovely café, and Letchworth’s open air lido, on the edge of Norton Common. You could walk from the farm into town on the historic Icknield Way and then follow various interesting routes through town or country. The relatively new “Greenway” offers more than 13 miles of (mostly) country trails. You can find a map at www.greenway.org.uk. For those interested in 20th-century architecture, Letchworth has some fascinating buildings, including the old Spirella Factory near the station. The welcoming museum on Norton Way www. garden-cities-exhibition.com has walk leaflets and more… Finally, you might want to head to the outdoor pool on Norton Common, off Icknield Way, to cool down after sightseeing. Simply stroll through the watery Howard Park and north up Norton Way. For more short walks in Letchworth, why not amble around leafy Norton Common after your wander through the blooming Lavender fields. LOCATION:

Hummingbird support group Cancer support with holistic treatments to aid you on your healing journey The Hummingbird Group holds cancer support drop-in sessions at the Rhodes Centre in Bishops Stortford. It was started 8 years ago in September 2007, by a small group of people who had gone through cancer treatment and who wanted to help others by sharing their experiences and skills. We are a very friendly group of professionally qualified, and fully insured, complimentary therapists who volunteer our time and skills in support of anyone dealing with their own cancer diagnosis, and their carers. It is our aspiration that Hummingbird should be a place for cancer patients and carers to find friends, share their feelings with others that know what its like to cope in a similar situation, to reduce anxiety, relax and unwind in an informal setting, whilst having the opportunity to receive an holistic therapy. We offer a wide range of approved complimentary therapies, including massage, Reiki, energy body work, meditation, reflexology and acupressure, to cancer patients and their carers. Our running costs are met by client donations, contributions from supporters and fund raising events. Our members often refer to the group and therapies as a haven of calm and tranquillity, offering a much needed escape from the rounds of medical treatment.

Where:

8

We have many appreciative patients and the following is typical of their comments: “My husband John and I discovered Hummingbird in July 2014. It became a ‘must do’ on our calendar for over a year. They offer fantastic support, comfort and encouragement as we faced the most difficult time of our lives. The therapists are lovely and I would encourage anyone to just come along and try it, even if just for a chat over a cup of coffee.” “My wife eventually persuaded me to go to the Rhodes Centre to see what the Hummingbird Club was about. I’m not normally a club type man but I went along and soon got to know the therapists and members and made some good friends there. I found the treatments really relaxing and for a while forgot my illness and anxieties and just enjoyed the companionship and happy atmosphere. They helped us through really difficult times.” If you would like to come to our drop-in sessions they are held on alternate Mondays from 10.301.30pm in the Café Bar of the Rhodes Complex, 1-3 South Road, Bishops Stortford, CM23 3JG. Our forthcoming meetings are 6th & 20th June, 4th & 18th July, 1st & 15th August and 5th September. local business people in person Name and Business Scott and Nicola Bourne, owners of Spin Doctor.

Where do you live? We live in Church Langley. What’s your favourite local venue? We do love a nice Thai restaurant and you can’t beat Baan Thai! What do you like best about Bishop’s Stortford? We really enjoy the shopping and especially South Street Pantry for lunch and wonderful cakes! What do you like doing when you’re not working? We do spend a lot of time working as we are currently building our business so with the little free time we have we spend it with our children doing activities. I set up my business because... We originally ran a franchise for a leading appliance manufacturer for 10 years but found this limited our growth and freedom. We decided that our best

option was to leave the franchise and start sourcing our own work through recommendations & advertising. We have never looked back and love being in control of our own business. We get most of our work through recommendations so we aim to make sure we give the best service possible in order for this to continue. What’s the best thing you’ve done recently? It was deciding to book a big family holiday, as family is very important to us. Favourite thing you’ve heard recently? I told my 7 year old boy off for kicking his football in the house to which he replied, “If you want me to buy you a big house when I’m older then I need to practise!”

raising funds for the nT herts & essex national Trust Border Centre Have you ever wondered how National Trust properties raise finance for the many excellent projects that are so welcomed? Well, we and other Supporter Groups are one of the means that enable the NT to succeed in its work. The local Herts & Essex (NT) Border Centre was founded in 1969 to promote the work of the National Trust by providing both financial and volunteer support for local properties and in more recent years has raised funds for many diverse projects such as: providing Konik ponies, a highland bull and two wheelchairs for Wicken Fen; a much needed millstone at Anglesey Abbey; a donation of £1,020 towards the two new Tern Nesting Islands at Hatfield Forest and much more. The local Border Centre is a lively group of National Trust members and volunteers with an extensive programme of talks, outings, social events and even a holiday for all the members who may wish to participate. We warmly welcome all those who may wish to join the Centre and cordially invite you to attend any of the Thursday Talks (1st Thursday in the month from October until May) or any of the outings that have been organised. If you are interested about the activities of the Centre please contact either Maureen Draper or Rhoda Hall, details below.

bishop’s stortford & stansted ever wanted more fun in your life? Are you Male, aged 18-40, looking for more fun and friends in your life and interested in making a difference in the community? If you are then read on as Round Table might just be the thing for you. “Round Table quite simply is the best young man’s club in the world”. Do you remember as a child in Bishop’s Stortford the fantastic fireworks displays at Pearce House? Do you remember the Santa Sleigh being driven round the town at Christmas time? Those events and others were organised by the Round Table in Bishop’s Stortford. Unfortunately about 10 years ago that club folded but we are back and looking to re-start the club now. We want to bring Bishop’s Stortford Round Table back to life to benefit the local community and offer the fantastic social benefits to young blokes in the area. While community and charitable giving is something to be proud of, it’s not the number one reason that people join Table. What is that reason? It’s to have FUN! Fun, whilst hanging out with a bunch of likeminded guys and having fun finding innovative ways to put a little back into the area we live.

Stansted. We’ve been out and about, doing some fun things and making new friends. Apart from the pool night and attempting wall climbing we’ve enjoyed a quiz night at the Star, a couple of pub nights and a curry night where we’ve been joined by other like-minded guys from local clubs in Great Dunmow and Saffron Walden. In the planning we are looking forward to summer activities including Bar-B-Q, White Water rafting, archery and other things. We will also be planning some activities to benefit our local communities.

For the past few months a group of young men have been getting together regularly and a new Table is being formed in Bishop’s Stortford and

round table What is Round Table? In the UK there are over 4,000 members in around 400 clubs but Round Table is also worldwide operating in 60 countries across the world with over 34,000 members. So there is opportunity for International travel. This year for example the International World meeting is in Nepal. Round Table has so far raised over £250,000 towards the school rebuilding programme there. In the UK Round Table is the biggest noncorporate contributor to fund raising for Children in Need, in 2015 they raised over £1m from organised fireworks displays, and above all Tablers continue to have lots of fun. Round Table can help you in your business by improving your confidence and leadership skills and of course provides a wonderful network of trusted, like-minded young men.

So, if you are male and aged 18-45, here is our question to you: Are you ready to improve your social life? Are you up for improving the lives of others in Bishop’s Stortford & Stansted? Do you like the idea of international travel with like-minded people? If the answer to all of those was YES, then it’s time to get in touch. Even better, you have the chance to be a part of the rebirth of your local club. The structure is there, we are just looking for extra members. Bishop’s Stortford & Stansted Round Table are available to contact through Facebook by going to Bishop’s Stortford Round Table or get in contact with Jay Summers at jaysummers@ outlook.com, mobile 07715 575 474 or message us on Facebook at http://tiny.cc/bsrt or text Join to 60066. LOCALs that launch: Jaclyn Dunne left the corporate world to embark on a new career in 2012 after realising life is too short not to follow your passion. Initially studying as a counsellor and hypnotherapist, she ultimately qualified as a nutritionist and health coach and Mind and Body Detox was born. Jaclyn’s husband James, an ex professional footballer and now qualified personal trainer has joined her in her quest of empowering their clients to lead a healthier life...

What is mind and body detox? We are a local husband and wife team who work together to create significant shifts in our client’s attitude towards nutrition, health, exercise mindset and beyond. We are fat loss specialists for men and women 35+. We support and motivate our clients to implement positive lifestyle changes that may even possibly save lives by optimising health and wellness. How do you do this? Through an in-depth consultation with Jaclyn, our Nutritionist who questions our clients to gain clarity and focus of where they are at present and how we can move them forward towards their goal and beyond. We determine a client’s plan of action by analysing their ultimate goal and which of our skillset will be best suited to the desired outcome. We are qualified in hypnotherapy, food intolerance testing, personalized nutrition, DNA Fit Testing and personal training which, according to client preference, can be at our clients home or at Pure Body Health in Dunmow. Most of our clients have no idea how good their

bodies are designed to feel as they are so used to constantly feeling tired, lethargic, fatigued, irritable, etc. What’s the most rewarding element of your work? Most of our female clients have shared that after having their children, they feel: • • • • •

Overweight In a constant state of Groundhog Day Have low energy levels They are a low priority Unhappy with the way they feel or look.

They need to start looking after themselves so they can look after their loved ones and start to feel comfortable and confident but they don’t know where or how to start. It is truly wonderful to see the journeys and transformations that our clients make on our transformation packages. Having embarked on a program with us, Eve of Hatfield Heath said: “They were reasonably priced but not the cheapest option however, nobody offered in such detail, mindset, nutrition and training. really helped and encouraged me to remedy my weight issue that stemmed from stress and hormone levels, which I hadn’t realized were so out of balance. They didn’t only help me achieve my goals; I gained more energy, lost significant weight and increased muscle at the same time, (losing 14lbs in body fat and gaining 5% muscle in 4 weeks) which has never happened. I was challenged through exercises that I never felt that I could do and I managed to complete with relative ease. They have now helped me set new goals to achieve and I can’t wait for further progression.” Her feedback is typical of our clients, once they start they don’t look back - it truly is a transformational experience! What do your transformation packages include? Our transformation packages run for 6, 8 and 12 weeks and are tailored to individual clients requirements. They most commonly include personal training sessions, nutrition assessment, a personalised nutrition plan and regular accountability sessions with Jaclyn to monitor weight, body fat, muscle and water and to ensure diet is on point.

How do you test for food intolerances? Our food intolerance tests are carried out by Jaclyn who takes a finger prick of blood, which is sent to a lab to be tested for an intolerant reaction with over 150 ingredients. Definitive results are returned to us within 10 days. Jaclyn has recently co-authored the International best selling book, “What’s left to Eat” which focuses on eating a diet free from allergenic and intolerant ingredients, therefore, she is well placed to advise our clients on coping with, managing and in some cases eradicating food intolerances. Is there anything else you would like to add? We are extremely passionate about our work and find it highly rewarding to work alongside committed clients who want to make significant changes. If this is you we are offering the first ten people that contact us a free 15-minute assessment, which is highly valuable to determine how we could help you, feel fitter and healthier. We look forward to helping you transform your mind and body...

1. Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. 2. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways. 3. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps. 4. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary. 5. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice. 6. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

TIP: Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape.

It is now established in a number of Countries including Australia, New Zealand, the Dominican Republic and South Africa. The University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is a unique and exciting movement which provides, through its U3As, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward:

the sheer joy of discovery! Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them. The U3A movement is supported by its national organisation, the Third Age Trust. The Bishop’s Stortford U3A started in 1985, and is one of the oldest and largest in Hertfordshire. It currently has in excess of sixty interest groups, with a total membership of approximately 1,200. It has a waiting list because of its popularity but if you are interested then view our website, details below.
