WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe october/ November edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION
CM23 CONNECTION
I know it’s still early and we have several months until Christmas but... as the next edition is for Dec/Jan, I’m hoping you will forgive me for planting a little seed with you now... I wanted to ask you to please, when you can, “support local” on the run up to Christmas - think about the kitchen table businesses that could supply those unique gifts, cards or Christmas puddings... Think about the local trades that could help put your external lights up, tidy the garden, clean your windows/carpets/ovens in readiness for the festive season. Go to see the local panto, play or Christmas fair - better still buy tickets as gifts! Get dressed up, buy a new outfit, pamper yourself... it goes on. I’m in no doubt that most of us do this already without realising just how important it is. It starts and ends with us and together we can make a huge difference to our local economy and community, let’s do this CM23’ers! Until next time, Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
AUTUMN FENS This day trip to Cambridgeshire starts with a ride on the world’s longest guided busway to a watery nature reserve and ends with tea in the picturesque market town of St Ives. Catch bus A, B or C from stop 9 outside Cambridge railway station and get off at Fen Drayton Lakes. Walk back towards Cambridge a few meters and turn left along lane. Look out, around dusk, for huge flocks (murmurations) of starlings. Keep straight, with lakes behind hedges on either side, until you reach River Great Ouse. Turn left and walk for two miles with water on right, emerging eventually onto a concrete lane. Turn left, then right on road and right again into Jones Boatyard. Walk clockwise around marina until you reach bridge with steps. Turn left and left again through wooden gate. Follow path under main road and walk along embankment beyond to road. Turn right over picturesque bridge to find River Tearooms in an old, half-timbered house. The bus station, to return to Cambridge, is straight on along Bridge Street and then right along Crown Street. LOCATION: Fen Drayton Distance: About 3 miles refreshments:

The birchanger wood trust (Bunny - rabbit droppings are brown)
HEDGEHOG!
What’s happening in the woods... by Trust Secretary Daphne Wallace-Jarvis
September started our woodland leaf drop and by the end of October, the last trees, our Oaks, will have dispensed with their leaves, and the sky and remaining birds will once again be visible through the high canopy. October, and Pat and his helpers will be planting out our exciting Woodland Trust donation of tree saplings. The woodland brambles and floor coverings will be comatose and whenever we have a mild and damp spell of weather, fungi (toad stalls) will flourish so bring out your cameras and iPhones to capture a great picture! The woodland floor will be much clearer and it should be possible to spot the evidence of deer in the Wood - the smaller muntjac and the medium size fallow deer do frequent Birchanger Wood - look for their footprints, their narrow runs (well-used cleared trails) through the undergrowth, and their droppings. This year we didn’t have the buzzards nesting in Birchanger Wood but they have been very evident all through summer from their calls and flights over the fields adjacent to the Wood and down in Stansted. By the way, since my sighting in April this year, I haven’t seen any

red kites over Stansted at all this summer. And so to our hedgehogs, well, we have Charlie our resident one-eyed man and he has been joined by Terry who is also disabled, having only three legs, so both these hedgehogs will be permanent residents in their special home within our compound and they will not be released to fend for themselves. Pat will, however, have to keep a daily eye on their health and feed them as required over the Autumn-winter period. This is an everyday chore if they are not able to hibernate. Our cut and matured fire wood for sale remains at £10 per wheelbarrow load, or £70 per cubic metre. Collect it from our Compound on most Saturdays 9-10am and 2-3pm. Off the Heath Row footpath/track entrance. We are making every effort to improve the entrance to Birchanger Wood for the collection of wood but the access to the Wood is not owned by the Trust so we are reliant on others for the maintenance of the track from Heath Row to the Wood.

advice from Hertfordshire police... How to avoid becoming a victim of fraud and telephone scams Many Hertfordshire residents have lost large sums of money after they followed instructions given to them by fraudsters posing as either police officers or bank officials over the phone. As average life expectancy increases, we have a growing number of older residents within our communities. While most reported frauds involve younger people as victims, some frauds or scams are particularly targeted at older people. Many older residents have accrued savings or receive regular income from pensions, so some criminals target this. Each month, Hertfordshire residents report more than 400 frauds, Around 100 of these involve persons over the age of 60. Luckily, most are reports where the intended victim spotted the scam before losing any money but around 35 fraud reports each month involve a financial loss to a victim aged 60 or over. Treat unexpected phone calls with scepticism. Fraudsters often claim to be officials and can seem very genuine but may not be who they claim to be. Callers may claim to be police officers advising you of criminal activity around your bank account. Genuine police or bank staff would never ask you to withdraw cash from your account and they would never ask you for your 4 digit PIN number. If a caller asks you to type in
18
your bank PIN number into your handset DON’T – fraudsters can use technology to identify numbers. Genuine computer firms will not call unexpectedly to help fix your computer. Fraudsters make these calls to steal from you or damage your computer with harmful software. Computer firms do not request credit card information to validate copies of Windows or other software. A common fraud is the ‘phoney police caller’. You receive a phone call from the ‘police’. They give you a name and the name of the police station they are calling from (usually a London based station). They ask you to ring back to get validation that the call is genuine but keep the line open so when you hang up, you unwittingly reconnect to the fraudsters who will pretend to be the police switchboard to validate the fraud. Always use a different phone or check the line has disconnected by ringing someone you know and whose voice you would recognise. You can opt out of many cold calls by registering with the Telephone Preference Service on 0845 070 0707. Don’t be afraid to put the phone down with a brief ‘no thank you’ and NEVER give personal information such as your date of birth or bank details to unexpected callers. Please pass this message far and wide, particularly if you have elderly and/or vulnerable neighbours.

1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the garlic, ginger and onion over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until light golden. Stir in the aubergine and fry for a further 2 minutes. 2. Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water and bring to the boil. BSMTC Presents calamity jane “I figure if a girl wants to be a legend, she should just go ahead and be one.” It will be ‘Girl Power’ Wild West style for BSMTC’s production of the musical comedy ‘Calamity Jane’. A rootin’, tootin’ show, packed with action, dances and feel good songs including: ‘The Deadwood Stage’, ‘Windy City’ and the Oscar winning ‘Secret Love’. The setting is Deadwood City, home to dusty cowboys and wholesome gals, but there is trouble in the saloon, when the actress booked to perform at the Golden Garter isn’t quite what ‘she’ seems. Can the legendary, sharp-shooting tomboy, Calamity Jane keep the peace and find a ‘real actress’ for the Golden Garter? More used to whip crackin’ rivalry with Wild Bill Hickcock, or rescuing the Deadwood stage from “injuns”, she sets off to Chicago to find glamorous actress Adelaide Adams, but she isn’t called ‘Calamity’ for nothing. She returns instead with Adelaide’s maid, and aspiring performer, Katie Brown and what follows is a wild ride of shoutin’, shootin’, dancin’ and singin’!
winning ‘Carousel’, the company present this well-loved musical comedy, based on the 1953 film starring Doris Day and Howard Keel. A hilarious comedy that is surprisingly romantic, as Calamity discovers she might act like a man, but she still thinks like a woman. Adapted for stage by Charles K Freeman. Music by Sammy Fain. Lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. Performed by an amateur company under license by arrangement with JOSEPH WEINBURGER Ltd.
