THE
WELCOME
CM23
Early days I know, but are you ready for Christmas? I started my planning back in October. Before you groan, I have a very good reason for this. Having published magazines for over 11 years now, I have learned that working flat out producing the New Year editions AND trying to do my Christmas shopping, whilst attending various concerts, plays and shows adds stress to what already is a stressful time of year! Although I have only bought a few prezzies so far, I know exactly what I will be buying and where from, which means I can have a little more time to stop and enjoy this wonderful time of year (smiles and sighs with relief!). If you haven’t given your Christmas shopping much thought as yet, do not despair; this month’s edition might just help you find that special gift. Whether you want to pamper yourself, your friends, family or even your home, we’ve got it covered. We have details of local Christmas fairs, where you can pick up unique gifts or how about buying tickets to a show at a local theatre? There are local businesses just waiting to help you with all of your preparations, go on give them a try... Until next time!

LOCAL CHARITIES east herts ymca shoe box appeal Our vision is that all young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential in body, mind and spirit. The sad reality is that many young people are simply not afforded this opportunity. For a whole variety of reasons, their reality is troubled and their future seems bleak. That’s where we step in. We believe that all young people deserve to have a safe place to live and the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our objective is to enable young people to truly belong, contribute and thrive – and we create this possibility by providing:
EAST HERTS
Either for a young man or young woman. We always struggle filling the young men’s boxes in particular. If you don’t have the time to purchase items then the YMCA will accept donations and items will purchased to fill the boxes. Please put donations, (doesn’t matter how large or small) in an envelope marked Christmas show box appeal and send to Robert Purcell, CEO, East Herts YMCA, 4 Northgate End, Bishop’s Stortford CM23 2EX. Items can also be dropped off to the same address, no later than 16th December, thank you.
• A safe place to stay, • An opportunity to make a fresh start, • Effective support based on needs, • The tools to enable young people to thrive. Over the Christmas period there are a number of the young residents from the Bishop’s Stortford, Harlow and surrounding areas (aged between 16-24) who spend their Christmas at the hostel or do not have much contact with their families. Every year we wrap shoe boxes and fill them with a few treats to provide a bit of Christmas cheer over the festive period. Sometimes the residents don’t have many personal possessions so even small household items for use in the kitchenette or shower are welcome. We are not asking for a whole shoe box, although that is wonderful. We are looking for items to put in the shoe box that don’t cost a lot of money.

local business people in person Name and Business Faye Brownjohn and I own and teach at Pole Train Fitness. Where do you live? Church Langley, Harlow. What’s your favourite local shop? I love all the independent shops in the town. Always somewhere to buy a present from! What’s your favourite local venue? We tend to come here when Pole Train have a night out. I love the atmosphere in Baroosh! What do you like best about Stortford? It would have to be the choice of restaurants and bars! What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love fitness and exercise, so I’m likely to be in the gym if I’m not working. I set up my business because...
Fitness is an industry I love. I count myself lucky to be able to get out of bed everyday and actually want to go to work. I’d been out of the fitness industry for about 10 years following a career break. However, once I took up Pole Fitness myself, I realised how much I missed teaching. It was the right time for me to get back into it. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? Deciding to move Pole Train Fitness to a bigger and better venue. We moved on 1st November and our new location opens up fantastic new opportunities for Pole Train and its members. Exciting times! Favourite one liner or saying? “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you”. This is a powerful statement and so true. You need to work hard to reach goals - fitness or otherwise. Put the effort in and you will reap the rewards. Life isn’t easy, but it’s what you make it.

christmas charity Quiz for sale What is it? A take away quiz is now on sale. It is on the theme of the Festive Season (as was the one we did in 2010) and so it is called the ‘Festive Season Quiz Part II’. Most of the questions are cryptic clues or anagrams although some are (relatively!) straightforward. The answer to each one is a word relating in some way to the Festive Season. To help you we even provide a list of all the possible answers so all you have to do is match the word to the clue. The closing date for the quiz is not until Monday 6th February 2017, so it is the ideal thing to do with your family and friends over Christmas and the New Year. You could also use copies as Christmas presents – they would make unusual, cheap and hopefully interesting stocking fillers.
What is it in aid of? All profits from the quiz will be sent to the Mildmay Mission Hospital and, in particular, its work supporting children in Uganda who have HIV/Aids. (Last year’s quiz raised £1609.90 for this project!) Where can I get a copy? Copies of the quiz are on sale at £2 and are available from: Nisa (formerly The Tuck Shop), Bell Street, Sawbridgeworth Or contact: Steve and Pam Robertson, 10 Bell Mead, Sawbridgeworth, Herts, CM21 9ES. Celebrate the Stort
A stroll by the river and a pint in the pub are always cheering. From the Star pub, turn left down Water Lane and right through Waitrose car park. Cross road and bridge ahead and turn left beside river on tarmac path that leads past Grange Paddocks leisure centre. Continue on far side of car park, keeping river on left, to footbridge in corner of field. Turn right without crossing and follow path with trees on left, until tarmac path leads right through playground to reach river again. Turn left and keep going, with river now on right, over Hockerill Street, under station road, crossing over (and a little right) along London Road and continue for a mile over lock and past Rushy Mead nature reserve to second lock. Turn right on Pig Lane and, after gate, right again into field. Keep straight on path to emerge, via lanes and railway crossing ahead onto Twyford Road. Cross and keep straight on Southmill Road, turn right by Rhodes Centre into South Street and past shops along Potter Street. Turn right down Bridge Street to return to Star.

Bishop’s Stortford choral society Do you want to sing, but have never dared? At Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society we aim to sing large and complex choral works, but we accept that new members may not have sung recently, or like Miranda Hart may have missed the opportunity. Apparently she said: “I am still bitter about not being in the school choir. Furious actually!” I wonder if that means she couldn’t sing or that she wasn’t wanted in the choir?! We do not require new members to be experienced in choral singing or to audition - we welcome all singers who are up for the challenge of mastering new pieces each term. We find that new members will learn and become more accomplished with us in the process. Our next open rehearsal is on 12 January in the United Reformed Church, Water Lane, Bishop’s Stortford. This term we have been rehearsing Britten’s Cantata St Nicolas and Dvorak’s Mass in D Major for our Christmas concert on 10 December in the Methodist Church, South Street, Bishops Stortford. Joining us for the concert will be the organist David Hinnitt, the tenor Richard Robbins and three young treble soloists. That is our big concert, but we will also be singing carols in the town’s Christmas Fayre on 3 December.

Bishop’s Stortford Night Shelter This year we have teamed up with the Bishop’s Stortford Winter Night Shelter operating from the Holy Trinity Church, South Street, from December to March. Our fundraising will help towards the costs of running the Shelter this Christmas. The Shelter provides emergency accommodation and supportive services to people who are homeless, or at risk. Last year the Winter Night Shelter was really successful and provided shelter and helped people to tackle their addictions and find work and housing and so improve their lives. Bishop’s Stortford art Appreciation In the lead up to Christmas, Bishop’s Stortford Art Society in conjunction with Ecco, will be holding an art exhibition upstairs at the Ecco charity shop on South Street, Bishop’s Stortford. After a successful event earlier this year, the second week in December was chosen as the ideal time for the next exhibition, allowing Art Society members enough time to be creative and offering the public the opportunity to pick up a unique gift before the holidays. As usual a large selection of paintings will be on show, created by local artists including watercolours, oils, acrylics and pastels across a variety of subjects

including portraits, landscapes and local scenes to abstracts, so there should be something for everyone to enjoy. David Cooper, President of the BSAS, had this to say: “We always look forward to our exhibitions, not only to show our artworks but to meet people who want to join the Society. Some people are concerned their work isn’t good enough, but we are mostly an amateur society, with only a few members earning a living as artists - the first step is a love of art, the second being practice. We can all learn new techniques, that’s why we hold demonstrations from artists, followed up by working evenings to try out their style. With a changing yearly programme, members can chose which events they want to attend, come to them all, or attend as a guest, but only as a member can they hang work in our exhibitions. So if you are thinking about joining us, do come along and talk to one of the members who will be stewarding the event and pick up an application form.” If you are looking for a unique present this Christmas why take a look, there will be a variety of paintings on display, with unframed work also available.

advice from Hertfordshire police... With 25th December fast approaching, our thoughts turn to shopping, shopping and more shopping! It can be a hectic and very stressful time of year so I wanted to take a few minutes to remind you all to stay alert and stay safe when out Christmas shopping. • When using a cash machine, remember to be vigilant and shield your PIN • Never leave shopping on view in your vehicles • Keep bags zipped, buttoned or clasped shut and keep purses out of sight (purse bells available – email me and I will send them out to you if you would like some) • Stay alert in crowded areas • If you use a handbag with a strap, wear it across your body and not just over one shoulder so it is more secure. • Men should keep their wallet in a front pocket rather than in their back pocket, making it harder for a thief to slip their hand in unnoticed.
After the presents have been opened, take time to register any new items on the free online property database www.immobilise.com. That way, police have more chance of being able to return them to you if they’re lost or stolen. If you are shopping online, remember before entering payment card details on a website, ensure that the link is secure, in three ways: • There should be a padlock symbol in the browser window frame, which appears when you attempt to log in or register. Be sure that the padlock is not on the page itself ... this will probably indicate a fraudulent site. • The web address should begin with ‘https://’. The ‘s’ stands for ‘secure’. • If using the latest version of your browser, the address bar or the name of the site owner will turn green. If you have any issues over the festive period, ring 101.
