WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe February/March edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION Happy New Year! It seems a bit odd saying it in February but as this is my first opportunity to do so, it felt only right and proper to take the opportunity to wish you a wonderful 2017, full of everything that you hope for... Hmmm, interest that I’ve used the term “wish”. I’ve been making plans for the coming year both personally and for my business (it’s ongoing, I’m not THAT organised!) and one recurring theme keeps coming up, if you don’t plan, write and REVIEW your goals (or wishes) they are less likely to happen. Here’s some interesting statistics*: • 80% of Americans claim that they don’t have goals • 16% of them have goals, but they don’t write them down • Only 3% actually have written goals, but they don’t review them regularly • Only 1% has written goals and they review them regularly, and these are among the highest achievers in the US. So, I’m not wishing for changes and good things this year. I’m making a list of my goals, breaking each one down into smaller, achievable steps and I’ll be revisiting them until they become reality! I’m determined to be one of the 1%, no more wishing for me! Here’s to a productive, goal achieving year!

Pub & café Walks
Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Cakes and Crocuses The popular Rosey Lea café makes a great base for a ramble through Stortford’s flowering rural fringes. From the café, accessible via a long drive off the Hadham Road, start walking back along tarmac lane towards the entrance. Turn sharp right by silver silos and right again on bridleway. Follow track behind Wickham Hall and turn left at little lodge house. Take next path right and follow it, winding alongside fields until an arrow points right; double back across fields, over stiles and head for brick arch under bypass. Walk past woods and follow path, eventually emerging onto Dane O’Coys. Turn right along road, cross Cricketfield Lane and continue, cross again to left, and go on along Maple Avenue. Turn right along Maze Green Road and follow Hertfordshire Way signs along paths through houses, across bypass, along field edges and, finally, right again past budding woods. Follow path under Hadham Road and leave Hertfordshire Way to continue straight along daffodil-lined drive of Hadham Lodge. Keep on, with pond on left and house on right, through pretty paddock and past more woods. When trees on left end, follow surfaced track right towards Wickham Hall. Just before you reach buildings, turn right on footpath to return to start. LOCATION: Wickham Hall

local business people in person Name and Business Andy Peasey and I own and run Ruggerbugs. Where do you live? Hatfield Heath. What’s your favourite local venue? Pircio is a lovely place- it‘s a nice for a quiet meal for two or for a family celebration. What’s your favourite local shop? Prontaprint in Bishop’s Stortford are excellent. They have been our suppliers for over 9 years and nothing is too much trouble for them. Dan, Anna and the team are all fantastic. What do you like best about Stortford? It’s nice to be able to have a wander around and grab a coffee and a slice of cake in any of the cafes, especially Rosey Lea! What do you like doing when you’re not
working? Spending time with my family and also playing golf badly! I set up my business because... I wanted to encourage children in the area to engage with sport from an early age and have the opportunity to take part in the best sport in the world. Rugby offers so much to parents, players and supporters alike. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? My company was awarded a Gold Accreditation to the Children’s Activities Association in a matter of 3 weeks when it can take up to 3 years. This gives parents the peace of mind that our activity is age appropriate, safe and all our procedures have been independently assessed and approved.

The birchanger wood trust What’s happening in the woods... by Trust Secretary Daphne Wallace-Jarvis
Well firstly, I am picking up on a comment that came in to me last year regarding the cherry tree which, sadly came to the end of its life. This tree had, regrettably to be felled - we had been monitoring it over the years and noticed that there was some recent movement and, given its precarious position over the path, the Warden and voluntary workers decided against leaving it any longer as there was a risk it could come down unexpectedly when a person or animal was in the vicinity. A shame, but this is all part of woodland management and positive consideration to public safety. However, there are a good number of other cherry trees growing in Birchanger Wood and woodland users will still have the pleasure of their flowering when spring arrives. Another thing you may have noticed is that some of our paths are well covered in leaves particularly over in the smaller section of Wood on the Birchanger side of the A120. We have obviously not been experiencing strong winds so far this winter as these would naturally move the leaves Tel:

away and into the woodland floor, where they would break down, produce food and cover for small animals, and insects, on which birds feed, and help to fertilise our Woodland bulbs. It does, however, make for some difficulty in finding our paths, sorry! Finally, just to remind you, Birchanger Wood is owned and operated totally by local volunteers and this ancient woodland is kept available and free for everyone to use 365 days of the year. Do come and enjoy this most valuable green lung right on your doorstep and please do feel free to contact me if you would like to be a volunteer or have any interesting ideas in this respect.

Our CHARITy of the year 2017
IT’s your community
streets2homes In December CM Connection Magazines ran a Facebook competition asking people to vote for their favourite local charity. The winner would become our first ever “Charity of the Year” receiving additional exposure from us in terms of support and publicity within our publications and also receive a donation of £100, in lieu of Christmas cards. The charities were put forward by our advertisers and the top 5 nominated were: • Grove Cottage • Herts & Essex Community Farm • PACT for Autism • Streets2Homes • St Elizabeth’s Centre It was a very exciting and a close run thing with the lead changing several times. On the last day of voting it was neck and neck but with a last minute surge of votes (or FB likes!) Streets2Homes pipped St Elizabeth’s to the post to become our charity of the year 2017! The whole campaign reached over 11k people in less than a week, that’s 11k people that now know a little more about each of the charities shortlisted, which is good thing in our book! Rest assured that we will continue to support all other local charities, and non-salaried organisations as we have always done, and you never know it could be your favourite group that becomes our next “Charity of the Year”!

Who are Streets2Homes? Streets2Homes is a charity based in Harlow, Essex and we manage a day centre which seeks to reach out to and help homeless people. We provide a safe and friendly environment in which we can assist them in a number of ways, including finding accommodation. The demand for housing in this area always outstrips availability so it can take time to find suitable accommodation; we are always looking for good landlords to work with us. The day centre provides a place to access housing advice, social contact, training sessions, employment advice, health services, help with claiming benefits, washing facilities, food, clothing, general guidance and support. In 2016 we have seen 362 new clients and dealt with 146 cases over the telephone, providing advice, guidance and practical solutions. Of the 508 people we assisted the following: • 72 into the private rented sector • 57 into other form of rented accommodation (this group includes lodging with friends/family etc.) • 20 successful referrals to supported accommodation • 3 were housed by the local authority • 25 were reconnected to the area they had an established link with • And the best part…85 were prevented from becoming homeless through mediation or intervention.

Fancy a walk? Bishop’s Stortford & District Footpaths Association By Daphne Wallace-Jarvis for BSDFA
Hello Everyone. BSDFA is 60 years old in March 2017! There will be a display in the Rhodes Centre of walks undertaken over the years. 2016 encompassed an interesting series of walks from North Harlow through to Debden, almost all of which were held in excellent weather and so in completion of the calendar year on Boxing Day a stalwart group met up for a brisk walk from Stansted Mountfitchet over to Birchanger and Birchanger Wood, and indeed the weather was brilliant. This article will be printed in February, and who knows what the weather will be doing? This winter, well in December, the weather swung wildly between mild and warm days, dense and frozen fog days through to calm and mild ones. There were brilliant sunshine days and others when it was thoroughly cold wet and windy. Interestingly, January, as I write is so far behaving very similarly. Notwithstanding, the Footpaths Association continues into 2017 with a varied set of walks in February and March, and we are now planning the spring/summer walks - Do you have a special walk to propose, or which you would like to lead? Do not feel daunted, and please do ask. To celebrate our 60th anniversary we are holding our AGM at the Rhodes Arts Complex on 18th March. Come along at 2pm and join us, or simply
Birchanger Boxing Day 2016 - by Sylvia Hayes, BSDFA
visit the grand display of leaflets and walks, which span 60 years of walking in the Stortford and District area. The display documents have been gathered together diligently by our Secretary, Sylvia Hayes and with the help of Chris Lydamore of the Bishop’s Stortford Museum will be on display. In addition, all the documents have been digitised and will be held in the Bishop’s Stortford archives for posterity. My very best wishes for a Good New Year!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING CARAMELISED ONION & GOATS’ CHEESE PIZZA 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced 2 tsp brown sugar 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced 5 cherry tomatoes, halved
THIS
IS A TASTY ALTERNATIVE TO THE CLASSIC CHEESE AND TOMATO PIZZA. SERVE WITH A SIMPLE MIXED GREEN SALAD DRESSED WITH BALSAMIC VINEGAR AND OLIVE OIL.
1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. 2. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. 3. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. 4. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown. TIP: Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano
