WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe February/March edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION

THE

CM23 CONNECTION

As this is the first edition of 2018 may I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year! You may recall that in the last edition I invited you to nominate your favourite local charity to become our charity of the year 2018. There were lots but the top 6 nominated made the shortlist and they were: • CanalAbility • Herts & Essex Community Farm • PACT for Autism • St Clare Hospice • St Elizabeth’s Centre • The Hailey Centre The voting window was just 4 days on social media and for the first 2 it was very close but after day 3 it became apparent that one nominee touched the hearts of more voters. I am delighted to announce that St Clare Hospice is the CM Connection Charity of the Year 2018!

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Snowdrops in Enfield This springtime walk discovers flowers and farmland in London’s northernmost borough. Just half an hour away by train (change at Cheshunt) or car, Enfield is full of hidden treasures. From Turkey Street Station, turn right under railway and continue along Turkey Street, under main road, and keep straight. Cross the New River and a road to enter Myddelton House, with a rockery garden at the far end full February snowdrops, or carpets of March daffs in the Alpine meadow. Go back to entrance of Myddelton House and turn right along road. Just before brick bridge, turn right through gate, left over footbridge, right and right again. Follow Forty Hall Loop (purple waymarks) for two miles, past wooded lakes farmland with sheep and pigs, and a vineyard. Look out carefully for the purple arrows, eventually turning left at a junction of paths. Through door in corner of walled garden, you reach Forty Hall. This Jacobean mansion, in a huge landscaped park, has a great café, serving farm veg soup and interesting cakes, like spinach and lime. Leaving Forty Hall, turn left onto road past church. Just after school, turn right on tarmac path; keep straight over main road and past cemetery. Finally, turn left at London Loop sign back to Turkey Street.

Special feature

local business people in person Name and Business: Gabrielle Vickery, partner ay Storm Design, Web & Print. Where do you live? I live and work in rural Great Hallingbury just outside Bishop’s Stortford. I love working here, surrounded by the peace and quiet. Although I do live under the Stansted flight path and in front of a donkey farm, so I’m actually talking rubbish. I do love being surrounded by nature though, particularly the chickens, deer and donkeys. They are outside though, obviously. Not inside. That would just be weird. What’s your favourite shop? I love the Steamer Trading Cookshop. I love every single thing in there. Not because I cook, you understand. I can’t cook. I just stand in that beautiful shop admiring everything and whining about why I didn’t marry a chef. What’s your favourite Venue? Cafe Mocha for the best hot breakfast, Bills for the best rib lunch and Carluccio’s for a pasta dinner. Not every day obviously. That would be unacceptable apparently. What do you like best about Stortford? The secondary schools in the area are excellent, and also the diversity of exercise classes that you can choose from, there’s something for everyone. Also the eateries, so much variety!

What do you like doing when you’re not working? When I’m not working I design virtual lingerie and daywear for an online game called Second Life. I have a virtual shop and people from all over the world visit my shop and pay me to clothe their virtual avatars! It’s insane. www.seldombluefashion.com. I’m also on a spirit quest to find out if there is life after death, but I’ve not been successful so far. https://flickeringlightblog.wordpress.com/. I set up my business because... I’ve been drawing since I could pick up a pen, and have always had a creative drive, so being a graphic designer/illustrator/web designer allows me to go creatively nuts every day. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? The menopause. Only because what went before it was even worse. What’s your favourite one liner? Passing comment from my 12 year old girl… “Don’t worry about your eyes getting old and blurry mummy! It means that you won’t see the beard that’s been growing on your chin.”

Bloody cheek!

isabel Hospice volunteers needed! Isabel Hospice has over 600 volunteers who donate their time in supporting the local charity throughout eastern Hertfordshire. As the need for their specialist end-of-life services increase, so does the need for more volunteers. It is estimated that 87,000 hours of volunteer time were donated to Isabel Hospice last year, at the value of £780,000* The Hospice offers full training and has a variety of roles in which help is needed. These include driving patients to and from Hospice Living Well with Isabel Day sessions, helping in the hospices shops and helping in fundraising to put on mass events. If you feel you could donate a few hours a week on a regular basis, please get in touch, as we really need your help! One of our Volunteer Drivers, Malcom shared his experience of working for the Hospice.

“As a volunteer driver you collect patients from home and take them to Isabel Hospice Living Well sessions across eastern Hertfordshire. It is a real privilege to drive. You get to know people over the weeks and its much more than driving people from A to B. You listen, you talk and hear stories from people from all walks of life. As you are driving it takes the pressure off the conversation and they are able to tell you things that maybe they can’t share with their family, knowing it won’t go any further. I’d thoroughly recommend it.“ * based on National (Real) Living Wage

St Clare Hospice Winter walkies 2018

Puppy love is in the air at St Clare Hospice as registration officially opens for the charity’s annual Winter Walkies event. The 5k pooch parade will be taking place at the Hastingwood-based hospice on Sunday 25th February 2018 and more than 300 walkers and their furry friends are expected to support the fundraiser. St Clare Hospice’s Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, is organising the event and said: “This year marks the 12th time the Hospice has hosted the event and it is as popular as ever! The 2017 walk saw a record-breaking 350 owners and their dogs take part, and we are hoping even more people register for 2018.”

and paws. It is such a great event – you’d be barking mad to miss it!” Registration costs £10 for adults and £5 for children, which includes a free soup, dog rosette and certificates for children. Walkers can also sign up on the day. Please be aware that the route is not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Emma continued: “Anyone is welcome to join us on this rural route across the beautiful Essex countryside – whether you are a dog owner or not. Just remember your wellies as it is likely there will be plenty of muddy feet

Bishop’s Stortford choral society dancing in the mountains with elgar

Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society hope their audience will be transported and thinking of summer holidays in the mountains when they hear Elgar’s Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands on 17th March at 7.30pm at the Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church. Elgar wrote the songs after staying in Southern Bavaria in the 1890s, setting to music six poems written by his wife. The Elgars had very much enjoyed their holidays, walking in the daytime and visiting the local Kneipe in the evenings to drink and watch displays of folk dances. The songs are each associated with a particular place in the area and are light and happy, in their Bavarian style. Alongside these, the Choral Society will sing Whitacre’s Three Flower Songs and Chilcott’s Aesop’s Fables, so providing a smorgasbord of song-making and themes. Whitacre’s Flower Songs set to music three poems by Emily Dickinson, Federico García Lorca and Edward Waller, telling of love, life and death through the seasons. Chilcott’s songs, which he wrote in 2008, present five of the wellknown fables, including the Hare and the Tortoise and the Goose and the Swan (that’s the one where a swan is mistaken in the dark

for a goose and was about to be killed, until from its song it was clear that it was a swan – its “swan song”). Ros Rowe, the Chair of the Choral Society says “We love bringing less familiar choral pieces to the town and this programme has something for everyone! Before Christmas we sang Bach and in the summer we will be singing Mendelssohn’s Elijah. We are always pleased to welcome new members who want to join us in learning and performing this eclectic range of music, lead, cajoled and developed by our brilliant young Musical Director, Richard Brain.”

Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is a group of over 80 singers, led by its Musical Director Richard Brain. It sings large scale choral music by new and established composers and holds its concerts locally, most often in the town. It rehearses on a Thursday evening at 7.45 pm at Water Lane United Reformed Church between September and July. The Society is always open to new members.

Stort valley rotary Quiz Night

Stort Valley Rotary Club are bringing its popular quiz to the Charis Centre, Water Lane, Bishop’s Stortford for the fourth year running on the 10th March. Last year £1,400 was raised in support of the local Food Bank (which the Club helped set up) and Life Education, another enterprise that we pioneered locally. This year we are adding “Herts Musical Memories” a charity that helps people with dementia and their carers. They meet weekly for singing and fellowship, led by a trained professional. See www.hertsmusicalmemories. org.uk for more details.

Also, we would like to thank all those that kindly donated to our Christmas Santa collection helping us raise just under £3,000 that will assist a number of Local Charities over the course of the year. Thank you and Happy New Year from all of us at Stort Valley.
