WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe april/May edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION
THE
CM23 CONNECTION
Hoorah! The clocks have sprung forwards. Mornings and afternoons are lighter, the snowdrops and crocuses have given way to Bluebells - spring has well and truly sprung! As I type it is lovely out there - blue, cloudless skies. My daughter has come home from school, red-cheeked and puffed out from the heat and walking - feeling proud that she’s managed to beat her 19-minute record. I, on the other hand have been limited to admiring the spring weather from afar - well from my window, to be exact. To make matters worse, my “step” count is dire (yep, I am a slave to my Fitbit!). On the weeks that I go to print, I’m lucky if I make 2 or 3 thousand steps - way off the recommended 10k steps a day. I’ll have to make up for it tomorrow... Don’t forget if you have an event coming up or belong to a group that could do with a little boost please do get in touch. In this edition I have loved being able to support Bish Bash (so glad the festival is back this year!), Rubber Cheese, St Clare Hospice The Royal British Legion plus everyone that appears on the community and listings pages, which are FREE. It’s also a great pleasure to have the support of local businesses, without whom this magazine would not exist. Welcome Hertswise and returning customers Spin Doctor, Leventhorpe Community Classes, MRB Gardening, Hayes Tree Services and Harlow Garden Services Ltd (bit of a theme going on there!). Until next time,
Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Pretty Ugley When it comes to bluebell woods, we’re spoilt for choice. This pretty ramble through fields and villages takes in several carpets of bluebells and there are more nearby around Quendon. Turn right out of the Chequers and right again on a lane leading towards cottages. Turn right at junction, follow lane to church and turn right once more on lane beyond it. Keep straight on path across fields to arrive, via another lane, in Ugley Green. Follow the road right and turn left by bus stop, past phone box. Turn right at footpath sign, through gate of Lavender Cottage. Keep straight on path to reach Alsa Wood and turn right through trees. At end of wood, turn right on path to lane and keep straight. At junction, take lane signed Stansted. Immediately after last house on right, turn right into another wood. Walk through wood to emerge from far right corner onto a path between fences. Follow it left around house to reach road. Cross over and walk straight up lane marked Bonnington Hall. Turn right at cottages and follow track past Wade’s Hall and alongside woods. Fork left on way-marked track leading into trees and, very soon, fork R at large oak onto narrower path past small pond. Cross little footbridge and keep straight over fields, under first line of pylons. Turn right along the hedge and keep following marked path through the woods ahead to return to the pub. LOCATION:

stortford music festival returns living legend wilko johnson & rolling clones to headline The Stortford Music Festival aka The Bish-Bash makes a welcome return in 2018. T he festival, which took a break this year returns to it’s traditional May bank holiday date, falling on 5th and 6th May 2018. Already confirmed to headline the Saturday are The Rolling Clones, one of the UK’s biggest and best Rolling Stones tribute bands. Sunday’s headliners are 90s indie band The Bluetones, and living legend Wilko Johnson. Wilko Johnson was the original guitarist for Canvey Island RnB legends Dr. Feelgood, recording four albums with them before going solo, then joining The Blockheads in 1980. His highly publicised fight with and recovery from cancer in recent years has seen Wilko Johnson in the spotlight again, starring in Game Of Thrones and Oil City Confidential, recording a top 3 album with Roger Daltrey from The Who, and taking his new band featuring Blockheads bassist Norman Watt-Roy and drummer Dylan Howe on the road.

Other acts confirmed so far included WITHERED HAND(acclaimed indie/nu folk from Scotland), nu-jazz duo Vertaal, punk band The Muffin Heads, Real McKoys and Pet Needs. More acts will be announced soon. The Bish-Bash will return to Sworders Field in Bishop’s Stortford, and will include all the usual festival mainstays including real ale bar, Stortford Soundsystem, comedy, Acoustic stage and kids area.
The Bluetones were part of the Brit-pop explosion in the late 90s, a genre topped by the warring factions of Oasis and Blur.

rubber cheese herts agency plans 15th birthday bonanza Sawbridgeworth-based digital agency, Rubber Cheese, celebrates 15 years in business with an ambitious year-long charity fundraiser. Founded in 2003, what started out as a foray into the world of graphic design has blossomed into a multi-award-winning team of digital experts, working with some of the world’s most exciting organisations. To celebrate 15 successful years, the team aim to raise £15,000 for the Tamba Bereavement Support Group, which exists to support parents and carers of multiple births who have experienced loss, whether during pregnancy, at birth or at any point afterwards. It’s a cause close to the heart of Founder and Managing Director, Kelly Molson. “Tamba BSG have been a huge support to myself and partner Lee after losing our twin girls Lily May and Ava in 2017. I’m really not sure how I’d have made it through the past 6 months without the peer to peer support I’ve received from the befriending service. This is a chance to do something really positive in return.” To achieve this ambitious target by 31 January, 2019, the team are going all out. Each member of the team will be taking on a 15-themed fundraising activity, all culminating in a huge birthday bash, currently slated for 15 September (National Cheese on Toast Day). The first two challenges take place in March & April. March 28th – 7.30pm - Fastest time To Eat A Can Of Cheddar Cheese Pringles
Kelly and Wag are going head to head in the first #15yearsofRubberCheese challenge. We’re attempting to smash the word record for Fastest Time To Eat A Can Of Cheddar Cheese Pringles which currently stands at 06:56.84 min/sec! April 19th - The RC 24 hour Danceathon Team Cheese are hitting the dance-floor for 24 hours of non-stop moves! 70’s, 80’s, 90’s – anything goes – from the Spice Girls to General Levy and The Killers. How can you help us? We’ll be live streaming to Facebook for your enjoyment, so dig deep and sponsor us. If you think you can take on the challenges, sponsor £15 and you can join us on the night at Rubber Cheese Towers to take part! Paul ‘Wag’ Wright, Creative Director, had this to say, “15 years in business is something to be incredibly proud of. We know this is a mammoth challenge, but as a team we are always pushing ourselves to the limits creatively, so why not this!” You can donate to this demanding goal at Rubber Cheese’s JustGiving page. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/15year sofrubbercheese

Hertswise hubs take place on the same day and time each week in various locations across Hertfordshire, and the 10 weekly sessions are held in areas where there is localised interest. Our East Hertswise Hubs take place at:
The Hailey Centre, Sayesbury Manor Bell Street, Sawbridgeworth, CM21 9AN, every Wednesday 9.30am – 11.30am. River Beane View (Quantum Care Ltd), 1 Beane View, Port Vale, Hertford, SG14 3UD, every Tuesday 10-12pm. Hertswise activities are designed to stimulate memory, improve cognitive function, encourage conversation, and strengthen and motivate individuals. Sessions include, but are not limited to, gentle exercise including team sports, arts and crafts, singing, and themed sessions. In addition, various organisations visit the groups to run specific sessions, including indoor cricket, dance, horticultural activities and yoga. Our teams have enjoyed some excellent feedback – here is what a Hertswise client from our East Herts hub at the Hailey Centre had to say: “Mum absolutely loves our group and very much looks forward to going each week. Her dementia has definitely affected social skills and confidence, our group is the only place she joins in and feels confident to join in. Mum has the type of dementia that causes vivid hallucinations, which are constant when at home, I’ve found while at the group this just doesn’t happen, which is a great relief, her mind is obviously focused on the activities. We both talk about and try to continue

Charity of the year St Clare launches new day therapy services St Clare Hospice has launched a series of new services for 2018 to complement their current Day Therapy service. The Hastingwood-based hospice charity has been delivering free, expert advice and support to people across West Essex and East Herts, via their Day Therapy team, since the charity opened in 1990. Their Day Therapy service offers a wide-range of support for people with life-limiting conditions – supporting people and their families from the moment a life-limiting or terminal illness is diagnosed. Day Therapy care includes support from a multidisciplinary team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Registered Nurses and Complementary Therapists. The team run group therapy sessions; rehabilitate patients through physiotherapy and occupational therapy; support families to make adaptations to their homes so that they can remain independent; and offer specialist palliative support for conditions such as heart failure, respiratory diseases and neurological conditions, through their outpatient clinics. The support is holistic – supporting a person’s physical, psychological, practical and emotional needs. St Clare Day Therapy Manager, Emily Stowe, explains: “We often hear people say that they thought hospice care was ‘just for the last few days or weeks of someone’s life’ – and that is just not true. Day Therapy supports you from the moment you are diagnosed as having a lifelimiting condition – supporting you to process
what that diagnosis means, and empowering you to live your life to the full. When you have an illness or condition that cannot be cured, it is very easy to let the illness overcome you – and we often see people who feel like they are ‘just a patient’ and not a ‘person’ any more. Day Therapy supports people to take back control, to become ‘me’ again. We support people to live with their condition, to remain independent, and continue to fulfil their goals and dreams in life.” St Clare Hospice has consulted with patients, families and local clinical professionals and is launching a number of new services to complement their existing programme of activities.

tips to prevent burglary We are very lucky in East Herts. We live in an area that has a low number of burglaries, however, they do happen and below is some advice to help you not become a victim. Tips to prevent burglary: • Check all downstairs windows and doors are locked and secure before you leave or go to bed. If you are going out, lock upstairs windows too (if you remove keys, ensure you have a fire escape plan). • Don’t leave car keys, mobile phones, wallets or other valuables on window sills, in hallways or in any other visible place. • Double-lock UPVC doors by lifting the handle and locking it to engage the security features. • Use timer switches on lamps to give the impression someone is at home. Get in touch with your local PCSO to see if there are any available. • Secure your rear garden: lock rear gates, securely lock sheds and garages, and keep tools and ladders locked away, as they could be used to break into your home. For more detailed crime prevention information, including a printable Home Security SelfAssessment, visit our website. Hertfordshire Constabulary has a dedicated team of officers who investigate distraction burglary. The team is called Operation Manhunt and their work has helped to drastically reduce incidents across the county. Distraction burglary means, quite literally, that a criminal will gain access to your property under false pretences and attempt to distract you while they or a colleague carry out a burglary.
Police advise never letting anyone you are not expecting into your home, whatever excuse they may give. If you are not sure, don’t open the door and call police if you feel the caller is suspicious. You can help prevent your neighbours from becoming victims. Someone may knock on your door - sometimes in uniform-style clothing and with fake identification - and claim that they need to get into your house to access the water/gas/ electricity, or to use a phone or have a glass of water. Some distraction burglars have even claimed to be police officers investigating a burglary. The most common trick is to claim they are from the water board and need to check your water supply. Be aware - ‘Water Boards’ no longer exist - it is an obsolete phrase used only by these criminals. If a stranger calls and you are not sure - don’t open the door. If you are not expecting anyone and you don’t recognise them, don’t let them into your home. A genuine caller won’t mind coming back at a time when you can arrange to have somebody you trust with you. If you feel that your caller is suspicious call the non-emergency number on 101 to report suspicious activity. Call 999 if you suspect a crime is in progress. Your call could help us apprehend even more criminals and stop them visiting someone else in your street.

So that is why I have set myself the challenge of fundraising for a whole year – from September 2017 to September 2018. The money I raise in sponsorship for the London Marathon will go towards my overall target of £5,000.” Kim is undertaking a year’s worth of fundraising in honour of Angela and she aims to raise £5,000 between September 2017 and September 2018.
