WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe June/july edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION

THE

CM23 CONNECTION

We are half way through the year, half way! Time flies as you get older doesn’t it - I remember as a child the summer just seemed to go on forever... On that whimsical theme, I visited Birchanger wood to see the Bluebells with some friends, what a little gem that place is and maintained so beautifully! Thank you to the kind gentleman who took some photos for us - treasured memories! It’s school summer fete season, why not take the opportunity to get to know your local schools and support them at the same time... Until next time, Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Summer in Pishiobury Pishiobury Park is especially beautiful in summer and the nearby riverside paths take you along the cool banks of the Stort. Cross the road outside the Harlow Mill pub and follow the path along the right bank of the River Stort for a mile, past Feakes Lock. Cross over the next footbridge and go on along the far bank until you reach a post with yellow arrows. Turn left here, on long wooden walkway through marshland and tree tunnel. Go through a gate and keep straight across a field. Go through two more gates and continue among the trees ahead. Eventually, a final gate leads out into open parkland. Walk left along an avenue of large trees. This is the “Oak Walk”, whose original trees dated back to the 15th century. As you reach the end of the avenue, carry on in the same direction through a gate onto a fenced path. Cross a small road and keep straight. Turn right immediately after a stream, soon bearing left to rejoin the river and turn right along it. Keep on past riverside flats to return to Harlow Mill. LOCATION: Old Harlow Distance: About 3 miles refreshments:

The birchanger wood trust in the wood... by Trust Secretary Daphne Wallace-Jarvis

The lack of rain in the past few weeks has meant a very short bluebell flowering season this year in Birchanger Wood, and the woodland pond is dry. Sadly no tadpoles reached full maturity and therefore, we again have no frogs. This is where every pond whether large or small in a garden, is so important to wildlife. It is absolutely necessary for their very lives that there are places where birds and mammals can come and drink water - a small pond and/or dishes of water, kept topped up with clean water are an absolute oasis. The Birchanger Wood Ash trees have broken leaf, and we are waiting for the sweet chestnut to do likewise - whilst the horse chestnuts meanwhile are already doing well - you will see the sets of conical pink and white flowers. Oaks too, have also started to ‘leaf-up’. However, a note of caution, this long period of drought in our part of England will have a long-term effect on our trees, and even if this does not outwardly appear to be an issue currently, this lack of water is certainly causing them stress, which will show in the growth rings of the trunks. Of course, all our trees will be in leaf when you read this article. The local buzzards are up there above the canopy (early May), and often at this time of year, a large group of parents and fledglings will be seen together, calling to one another when they soar out above Heath Row and the houses and open spaces in this part of Stortford. These

large birds float seemingly effortlessly using the warm thermals to gain height. They wing their way over to Stansted, and Manuden and over the countryside between. In addition, there are now red kites frequently to be seen floating overhead. They are also ‘large brown birds’ but can be easily identified from the buzzards by their pronounced forked tails. Kites do not kill other animals and birds, as do the buzzards, but they are searching for already dead animals and birds. They therefore tend to drift around much lower whilst looking for their food - road kill mostly, and, because they often glide along at a lower height, when the sun is shining above them you will see the most beautiful reds and browns colours of their feathers. Do enjoy summer!

Age concern at the new apton centre alone in a crowd Most of us will experience loneliness at some point in our lives, though this feeling is often passing. Yet, according to Age UK 10 per cent of adults aged over 65, feel lonely often or all of the time, Which means that currently for over 1 million older people this is their reality; what defines them, with devastating effects. Humans are by nature, social creatures that require the company and interaction of others at all stages of life, arguably more so in our latter years. The impact isolation has on health and well-being can be catastrophic, affecting people physically and mentally, and can contribute to premature aging, dementia and lead to an early death. The good news is, there is help out there and you can do something too. Jac, the manager at Age Concern, The New Apton Centre Bishop’s Stortford says, “There are lots of ways in which you can help lonely or isolated elderly people in your community.” 1.

Start a conversation It may be you have noticed a neighbour in passing, take the time to stop and talk to them, build-up a relationship.

2.

Offer Support Many of our older community are restricted to the home due to various health issues. If you notice someone who barely leaves the home, or has few/no visitors, ask them if they need help! It could be just picking up essential items, accompanying them to an appointment or just helping them around the house with chores.

email:

3.

Age Concern and similar charities Share your time by volunteering at Age concern or direct people to organisations that are already there. The help is here, it’s just not everyone knows about it. Centres such as Bishop’s Stortford’s Age Concern provide a warm, safe and friendly environment for older people to engage in a variety of activities and meet new friends, to help combat loneliness.

Evidence suggests giving your time is as valuable to you as the people you support, giving you a sense of purpose, which increases your self-esteem. Providing a boost to your own health and well-being and increasing your social interaction which we all need.

Summer reading challenge 2017 The reading agency and libraries present: animal agents This summer, go wild for a marvellous mystery at your library! Hertfordshire Libraries and The Reading Agency are delighted to announce that Animal Agents, Summer Reading Challenge 2017 will launch on Saturday 15 July.

Last year an incredible 20 000 children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge across Hertfordshire. With your help, we’re hoping to make 2017 the best year yet! We’re challenging children of all ages to read six library books over the summer holidays and return to the library to tell us about them. They can read anything they choose, including story books, fact books, talking books, and even e-books (available to download for free from our e-library). As children report back on what they’ve read, they’ll be rewarded with limited edition Animal Agents smelly stickers to help them sniff out the truth behind the mystery and catch the culprit. Every child who finishes their six books will be awarded a medal and a certificate. Children who finish by Saturday 9 September will also have the chance to win a ticket to an exclusive author event. It is free to take part; all children need to do is visit their local library from 15 July to collect a starter pack, while stocks last. The Summer Reading Challenge ends on 9 September. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge kicks off on Saturday 15 July with a fun-filled Launch Event at Hemel Hempstead Library. Children can also download the Animal Agents App and visit: www.animal-agents.org.uk for more fun and games and don’t forget to pop into your local library!

Our chosen charity Some facts & stats about homelessness

Did you know that these 10 celebrities were once homeless? Hard to imagine, isn’t it? Jennifer Lopez, Steve Jobs, Sylvester Stallone, Halle Berry, Heather Mills, Chris Pratt, Jim Carey, Daniel Craig, Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Chaplin. Unexpected happenings in life can take any one of us from stability to fragility in a matter of moments and as the high-profile list of celebs above goes to show, no one is immune. The potential to the vulnerability to poverty, hunger and homelessness impacts our community each and every day and that’s why The CM Connection supports our charity of the year, Streets2Homes. Becoming homeless can happen to anyone for a whole range of reasons; drugs and alcohol addiction, mental and physical ill health, relationship breakdown, unemployment and falling on hard times can all be a cause or effect of homelessness. Pride is what often causes estrangement with family and friends and if there is no one to help, a swift decline in a person’s personal situation is inevitable. Harlow’s Streets2Homes charity manages a day centre which reaches out to our local homeless community and raises awareness further afield too. They support their clients through providing the essential needs in day to day life such as offering a place to access

important information including housing advice, employment advice, health services, skills and training sessions. They also meet basic needs by providing washing facilities, food, clothing, general guidance and support as well as providing much-needed social contact in a safe and friendly environment. The main aim is, of course, to help them find accommodation, which can be a lengthy process due to high demand and lack of available homes, so with the support of other agencies and supporters of the charity, they work tirelessly to find suitable accommodation. There are many reasons for the continued homelessness crisis, but the welfare reforms, rental costs and the shortage of affordable housing and landlords willing to let to those on benefits have all had a major impact on the figures. With increased focus on homelessness over the past 3 years especially, this has resulted in the Harlow community working together to help those who are vulnerable and without a home. Our local group of Harlow churches including St Paul’s, St Mary-at-Latton, St Stephens, St Mary’s Churchgate Street, St Mary Magdeleine have been working with The Chocolate Run and Streets2Homes and combined, have created Hope4Harlow; working together to provide a much-needed winter shelter so those without homes did not

Statistically, over the last 3 years, Streets2Homes has seen: 1,047 new clients accessed services. 1,011 accessed meals at the centre 13,333 meals were made at the centre 999 clients engaged with one or more elements of their project such as allotment, volunteer programme, IT skills workshop, job club, accredited courses, well-being sessions to improve their confidence, self-esteem and enhance their employability Approximately, 74% are male and 26% female The average age is 37 33% admitted they had mental health needs and 20% had physical health needs. Main causes of homelessness are eviction from the private rented sector, loss of job, relationship breakdown Of the 1,047 to access services, they assisted 684 to either secure accommodation or prevent them from becoming homeless Over the past 5 years, homelessness in Harlow has increased in line with national figures; the number of rough sleepers has increased by 133% in Harlow alone (number of sofa surfers not counted)

fundraising for st clare Sliding down the corkscrew tunnel slide winding around the orbit at the Olympic Park. On Saturday 22nd July at 11.15 am It is the world’s highest, longest and fastest tunnel slide. I volunteer for St Clare Hospice. The Hospice gives free specialise care to terminally ill and end-of-life patients. They need funds to carry out the free loving work they do for patients. Patients and their families are given loving support and care. The NHS gives a little help, but the rest of the money has to be raised through intense fund-raising. I am therefore sliding down the Orbit to raise money for our Hospice. You could donate by going on my donation page or by sending me a cheque made out to St. Clare Hospice, but posted to me at my home address. Thank you. Goolmohr Cantel. (Georgie)
