WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe June/july edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION
THE
CM23 CONNECTION
Can you believe it we are half way through the year - half way?! We’ll be on the count down to “you know what” before we know it! Waaaay back in January I turned 50 and decided to mark the milestone by having an ”adventurous year” and the biggest adventure planned so far is to walk the Great Wall of China. I should clarify, I won’t be walking ALL of it as that would take about 18 months to cover its entire 5,500 mile length but just a small section that can be completed in around 9 days. I won’t be going alone as my school friend Marie (also 50!) will be doing the challenge with me, along with 35 other trekkers from across the country. We’re all raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, which is an organisation very close to my heart. Marie & I are self-funding, which means everything we raise will go straight to the charity. So the next few months will see us facing lots of mini challenges in terms of fitness and preparation (some parts of the wall are extremely hairy!) but also in getting out there and organising fundraising events - totally out of my comfort zone but hey, I wanted a year full of challenges! I’ll keep you posted on our progress, who knows perhaps it may motivate you to embark on your own challenge - after all if this 50 year old, menopausal woman can do it, what’s stopping you! Until next time,
Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
BOATS AND BEACH HUTS This stroll around seaside Harwich is just over an hour’s drive away, but feels like another world. Even better, take the train via Manningtree – it runs beside the scenic Stour estuary through a wonderful watery landscape. Harwich is full or maritime history and long atmospheric beaches. Start near Harwich Town station and walk towards the High Lighthouse ahead, the official start of the long distance Essex Way. There’s free roadside parking nearby. Turn left, right and left again into Church Street, passing the Guildhall. Turn right into Market Street and left into Kings Head Street with former home of Christopher Jones, captain of the Mayflower, at number 21. At the end of the road, turn right along the Quay past Ha’penny Pier and the waterside café. Follow the road right into King’s Quay Street and Wellington Road. Walk along the waterfront, past the Treadwheel Crane and Low Lighthouse. Keep going, with the sea on your left for 1½ miles, passing two more lighthouses. Reaching some ponds by a long row of beach huts, turn back along Lower Marine Parade. At the statue of Queen Victoria, turn left into Kingsway and right into High Street, bearing left into Main Road. Don’t miss the Redoubt, a large circular fort built in 1808 to protect the harbour from a Napoleonic invasion. Continue up main road back to the High Lighthouse and station. LOCATION:

St elizabeth’s
Community & corporate volunteering Programme St Elizabeth’s are delighted to be launching their Community and Corporate Volunteering Programme for 2018. Do you have a CSR (Corporate & Social Responsibility) programme? Why not get involved with St Elizabeth’s! St Elizabeth’s can offer a range of volunteering opportunities for both corporate and community volunteers of large or small groups from April – October. Whether it is assisting with gardening or lending a hand with painting, there is a role to suit everyone! St Elizabeth’s provide positive living and learning for people of all ages with severe epilepsy, learning disabilities and other complex needs. Based in Much Hadham on a 68-acre site, St Elizabeth’s consists of a school, college and adult home and includes residential housing and gardens to support over 200 children and adults. Volunteering can make a real difference to St. Elizabeth’s. By giving your time, the living
environment of all vulnerable beneficiaries is kept in a beautiful condition, enabling everyone to enjoy it all year round. Volunteering also ensures St Elizabeth’s can save on valuable resources and money that keep the site up to date. Above all, it’s a great team-building exercise! The volunteering dates will run until Wednesday 24th October 2018, on Mondays and Wednesdays. There are two different types of volunteering roles available this year - general site maintenance (painting, gardening and tidying) & Ashvale (gardening, weeding, pruning etc., within “Ashvale”, the Horticultural Project). When your volunteering role comes to an end, St Elizabeth’s want to encourage all volunteers to remain engaged – from signing up to a challenge event, to running a company-wide bake sale or attending one of our fundraising events. The Centre would love for you to share your experience with your colleagues, friends and family!

local business people in person Name and Business: My name is Stuart Tulloch and my business is S Tulloch Roofing. Where do you live? I lived in Harlow for the majority of my life but moved out to Takeley a couple of years ago when I met my wife. What’s your favourite shop? Does The Bishop’s Cave count? Great wine bar plus you can buy cheese, wine and craft beer. Great place! What’s your favourite Venue? We really like going to Skew - good food and a really enjoyable place to spend the evening. What do you like best about Stortford? The varied rooflines - something from every era! What do you like doing when you’re not working?
I enjoy travelling and have just come back from a cruise, so hopefully we’ll have many more adventures to come. I set up my business because... I am good at what I do! But seriously, I have over 20 years roofing experience and with the support of my family decided to go it alone. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Getting married! What’s your favourite saying? We have a family saying - “we are done!”

Stortford stags volleyball club Ever thought about trying a sport that’s a little different? The Stortford Stags Volleyball Club are looking for new players ahead of the forthcoming indoor season starting this September 2018.
are from abroad where Volleyball is more mainstream.
Stortford Stags Volleyball Club started in late 2015 by a few local volleyball enthusiasts.
Most people think Volleyball is something just for a mess about on the beach whilst on holiday but we think Volleyball is a great sport, it’s technical, fast paced and requires some explosive power plus is not too demanding on fitness levels as other sports (unless of course it goes to a five set thriller then you do need to dig deep). We encourage you to try it out, our first taster session for newcomers is always free and we are pretty sure you’ll come back for more.
We offer a competent level of Volleyball for the local community of Bishop’s Stortford and surrounding areas. We are a friendly and fun club playing every Friday night during the indoor season (September to April) at Leventhorpe Leisure Centre, Sawbridgeworth. We play in the local amateur Essex men’s league, the competition is strong but we always give it
Also, from June (in our off season) a bunch of us get together informally and play outdoor volleyball on a weekly basis in Bishop’s Stortford town park (Sworders Field), this is great fun and I would encourage anyone interested to contact us. We
our best shot and most of all enjoy ourselves. We currently don’t have a women’s team but that is something we would like to offer in the future so please get in touch if you’re keen. As Volleyball is certainly not a mainstream sport it can be quite a challenge at times in recruiting new players to the club. Most of our players are either those who have played during their time at University, had family members who played or
usually play until the light defeats us. Everyone is welcome and best of all it’s free to play. Just get in touch with Rob Alexander, details below.

Charity of the year Hospice calls on local schools and supporters to ‘Go Bright for st Clare! St Clare Hospice is calling on their local schools, workplaces and community groups across West Essex and East Hertfordshire to put their creative fundraising skills to the test by taking part in their second annual Go Bright Week. The hospice charity is running the weeklong campaign as part of their community fundraising activities and the event promises to be the ‘brightest week in the St Clare calendar.’ Taking place from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd July, St Clare supporters are invited to hold ‘bright’ events in aid of the charity – raising awareness and funds for the cause. St Clare Community Fundraising Lead, Dani De’ath, is co-ordinating Go Bright Week and explained: “Go Bright is all about supporting St Clare Hospice, your local hospice charity. Our lovely, bright St Clare logo is all the colours of the rainbow and we want to celebrate the brightness and happiness that St Clare brings to the lives of our community – by holding a whole week of bright, rainbow-coloured celebrations for St Clare!” Dani continued: “One of the first things patients and families often say to us when they arrive at St Clare is how lovely and bright the hospice is, and what a happy and peaceful atmosphere it has. It is often not what they expected, as they imagine a hospice to be a dull and dingy place. That is another reason why we have chosen to
call it Go Bright Week – helping to spread the word that St Clare is a bright and happy place.” Commenting on range of Go Bright events that participants could organise, Dani said: “Why not hold a Go Bright dress-down day at your school or workplace – by donning the brightest clothes in your wardrobe; bake a bright rainbow cake and hold a bake sale; wear a bright-coloured wig for the day or wear your brightest facepaint? Whether you dress up, eat cake, wear a wig or paint your face, you will be part of the brightest week in the St Clare calendar – and help to raise awareness of our work and raise much-needed funds for us.” Go Bright Week will start with St Clare’s first-ever Go Bright Walk held on Saturday 14th July in the Water Gardens in Harlow. The new summer 5k fundraiser promises to be the ‘brightest 5k in town’ and the event is suitable for the whole family. The walk will set off at 11am with a familyfriendly festival of stalls, games and treats from 10am to 3pm. Running from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd July Go Bright Week is open to all local schools, businesses and community groups across West Essex and East Hertfordshire – the catchment area of the hospice. For more information about how you can get involved in St Clare’s Go Bright Week contact Dani, detaiils below.

An annual one-day, charity, family-friendly music festival deep in the Hertfordshire countryside, Brookfest takes place at Brook Cottage Farm Riding School, Furneux Pelham on Saturday 30th June 2018. Gates open at 12.30pm with live music over two stages all day and Uncle Funk and the Boogie Wonderband headlining at 8.30pm. means they cannot ride. The festival is hoping to raise funds for the creation of a half-mile driving track around the hay field with trees (ordered from the Woodland Trust), wildflowers, butterflies and a picnic area. Tickets are now available online from www. brookcottagefarmridingschool.co.uk/ brookfest or from the cafe or office at the riding school. Tickets are £17.50 for over 18s, £10 for 13 - 17 year olds, £5 for 5 - 12 years olds and under 5s are free. Please call Caroline on 07474 257621 for more information
The festival also features an interactive theatre tent, yoga / mindfulness area, dance, art & craft, food, and drink stalls along with lots of activities for the children. Camping is available by prior arrangement and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome. The festival is a non-profit event raising money for the riding school’s Riding for the Disabled (RDA) activities. Children with disabilities are offered many activities in Herts and Essex, including horse riding, but opportunities to ride and enjoy horses tend to dry up as they reach adulthood. Brook Cottage Farm Riding School, already an accredited Riding for the Disabled Centre, will be offering carriage driving and therapy drives to adults with disabilities from May 2018. Driving a carriage allows people to enjoy nature, to be physically active and benefit from contact with horses, even when the nature of their disability

Charity of the year St Clare Hospice granddaughter records song to raise funds for hospice charity A student midwife from Harlow has honoured her grandmother by creating a charity song to raise funds for the hospice who cared for her. Kerry Garner (37 years from Harlow, now living in Welwyn) has created a charity CD of her original song ‘What a difference a year makes’ in honour of her grandmother Joan Poole, and to raise vital funds for St Clare Hospice where Joan received care in December 2017. Joan Poole (84 years from Harlow) was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May 2016 and received support from St Clare’s Day Therapy team, as well as spending time on their Inpatient Unit in Hastingwood in December 2017. Joan died on 17th December at the age of 84 years. Kerry was inspired to raise funds with a charity CD after speaking to Nan about how St Clare had helped her. Kerry Garner said: “I was visiting my Nan when she said that she wanted to find a way to thank the Hospice for their care. That was when I suggested that I make a charity CD for St Clare. I played her a song that I had written a number of years ago, but had never released, and my Nan loved it. It was the perfect way for Nan and I to say ‘thank you’ to St Clare – I am so pleased that the song has helped us to do just that.”
place, and is not what you imagine a hospice to be like at all. All the nurses and doctors were so kind and welcoming to everyone in our very large family. It really felt like ‘home from home’ and my Nan loved the environment. She spoke about the staff at St Clare as if they were her best friends! Her one wish was that she didn’t want to die at home, on her own, so although I was obviously distraught when she died, I was pleased that she was at peace and died with her loved ones around her.” Kerry Garner’s song ‘What a difference a year makes’ has already raised more than £500 for St Clare Hospice, as well as an additional £500 raised in memory of Joan Poole. The incredible amount of £1,000 is enough to pay for more than 55 counselling sessions delivered by a qualified bereavement counsellor at St Clare Hospice. The CD is available in St Clare Hospice’s main reception for the suggested donation of £5. Alternatively, you can order a copy of the CD by contacting Kerry direct on: whatadifferenceayearmakescd@outlook.com
Kerry continued: “The song is called ‘What a difference a year makes’ and is all about what is important in life, and appreciating the time that you have. When you are told you have got limited time to live, it actually does make you appreciate the time you have. You’ve really got to enjoy what you’ve got.” Commenting on the care Joan received from St Clare Hospice, Kerry said: “St Clare is a lovely
