WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe Aug/Sept edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION

THE

CM23 CONNECTION

Hasn’t the weather been lovely, reminds me of the summer of 1976! Seemed fitting to have something cooling for this editions front cover... hope I’ve not jinxed anything! A month or so ago I commissioned 3 surveys for the magazine: one for advertisers, one for residents and one for local charities. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone (there’s always good to be found outside of it isn’t there!) however, it was made a lot easier with the help and support of Ankrah Associates (thank you Yvette!). Based on the feedback I will be making some enhancements to the mag in the coming months. They say a change is as good as a rest and I hope that I’ll be able to demonstrate that I’ve listened to the feedback that you’ve given me and make this the best community & local business magazine in Stortford! China Trek 2018 Update: our training continues as does our fundraising. Our longest walk to date is now 13 miles - hips ached for days after! I’ll post updates on Facebook, it would be lovely to have your support. Our Just Giving page - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ mariandlorraineschinatrek2018. Until next time,

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Meander around Maldon Another coastal walk for long summer days. Turn right out of Mrs Salisbury’s, right again down Market Hill, and follow the road over the Chelmer Estuary. Keep on along The Causeway and eventually turn right into Bates Road and follow it to the end (there is an overgrown path running parallel). At the fence, turn left and then right onto the path and keep going in the same direction. At Heybridge Creek, turn left along bank and right along path beside water. Continue on the main path and follow it all the way around the Heybridge Basin with great views right across Maldon. Finally, reaching the Heybridge Sea Lock, cross the lock gates and turn left beside channel, with water on left. Follow path ahead for a couple of miles under three roads. Look out for Tesco’s across the water and turn left over the bridge nearby. Keep straight on tarmac path and turn left along Chelmer estuary. Turn right after the Sunny Sailor and return up Market Hill to Maldon’s High Street.

advice about cold callers Hertfordshire Police often receive reports about traders cold calling at the door telling homeowners that they need work to be done to their home, garden, roof, guttering or that their trees are unsafe and need work. The work has then been badly done and sometimes the price jumped by ten times because the trader “helpfully” found other gardening work that also had to be done! We also receive reports about other home maintenance cold calls such as driveway work and roof cleaning. In some driveway cleaning cases the traders have persuaded the homeowner to have the back patio cleaned as well as the front drive, causing the price to jump up hugely from the original estimate. Although roof cleaning may make the tiles look cleaner, the force of the pressure washer can cause other problems with the roof. The National Federation of Roofing Contractors advises that moss is not a problem on a roof and that this service is completely unnecessary.

identity of the trader who is doing the work and the total cost of the work to be carried out. The consumer must authorise the trader in writing if the work is to start within the 14 day cooling off period. Just having a statement on a flyer or business card that there is a 14 day cooling off period is not enough. Please keep an eye out for any vulnerable neighbours who may be approached by cold callers. If someone has agreed to work from a cold call and there is no paperwork, it is likely that there will be a problem. Similarly, if you see roof work being carried out and there is no scaffolding in place, there is likely to be a problem with that trader. Call 101 to let the local police know. If you need further help or advice please contact the Citizen’s Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506. For a Trading Standards recommended tradesperson contact Trading Standards on 08454 040506 or visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk

Our advice is never to have work done by anyone who cold calls. No reputable trader ever approaches a customer in this way. If you think your home or garden needs work, please use a recommendation from friends and neighbours or find a good trader. You should also obtain three quotes to check if the price is competitive and if the work really needs doing - never rely on the word of a single trader. Any contracts over £42 that are agreed in a consumer’s home are subject to a 14 day cooling off period. The homeowner must be given written information about their right to cancel, about the

bishop’s stortford choral society Elijah: enjoyed by audience, choir and orchestra Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society and Hertfordshire Philharmonia came together under the musical direction of Richard Brain to give a spirited and enjoyable performance of Elijah on the last of the blazing days of June, but not the last day of the heatwave! As the streets of Bishop’s Stortford still hummed with local people enjoying the Mediterranean conditions, the audience in the Methodist Church heard the story of Elijah entreating the people of Israel to worship God and pray for rain. Four young and very professional soloists sang the parts of Elijah, Obadiah, Ahab & his queen, Angels and a widow, while a schoolgirl from Finchley with a clear and pure tone sang the part of a youth. Feedback from the audience was that the concert was spirited and enjoyable; sung with gusto; and very memorable. The orchestra enjoyed the experience and have promised to play with the Choral Society again and the choir members were left buzzing and exhilarated. Richard Brain’s motivational and inspirational leadership had

brought the best out of the singers, orchestra and soloists and it was very clear throughout the rehearsals and the concert how much he, too, had enjoyed himself! The Choral Society is always happy to take in more new members, without audition. It starts rehearsing again in September for a concert of Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D on 1 December. There will be an Open Rehearsal on 13 September, where potential new members can join in and see if they would like to be part of this growing and enthusiastic group!

Bishops Stortford Choral Society is a group of around 100 singers, led by its Musical Director Richard Brain. It sings large scale choral music by new and established composers and holds its concerts locally, most often in the town. It rehearses on a Thursday evening at 7.45 pm at Water Lane United Reformed Church between September and July. The Society is always open to new members.

cst.today: dementia support group #LivingWellWithDementia, regain the joy in life

CST.Today is a not for profit social enterprise set up in October 2015 by Debbie Baker a resident of Bishop’s Stortford. Debbie had been working for a dementia support charity in Essex and realised that there was a lack of support services for people living with mild to moderate dementia in Bishop’s Stortford. She made the decision to leave her job with the Charity and set up CST.Today, an activity and social group for people living with dementia. Debbie and her wonderful team of volunteers hold the sessions in the New Apton Centre on a Wednesday and soon will be opening on a Tuesday in Birchanger Village Hall. CST stands for Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, Debbie has attended CST training held in London by Dr Aimee Spector one of the pioneers of the treatment. It is an evidence based treatment for people living with mild to moderate dementia, that has been found to help improve memory, communication, executive functioning, social interaction and more. The principles of CST are used in the CST.Today group sessions. The main aim of CST.Today is to help maintain independence for as long as possible, not only for the person living with dementia, but also for the carer, as it provides a respite for them too. After an initial free taster at the group for the person living with dementia and a friend or carer accompanying them, the person living with dementia can attend on their own, giving them a chance to meet new friends, enjoy activities with like minded people, and feel

relaxed, whilst the carer can have some much needed ‘me’ time - everyone is a winner. There is so much fun at the group, activities include: singing, dancing, exercise to music, Indoor Games such as Darts, Hockey, Volley Ball, Skittles etc plus crosswords, quizzes, arts and crafts, poetry, reminiscing and more. There is also the opportunity to join in short discussions about current affairs and what is going on in the world today. Once a month the group organises entertainment for it’s members, a few months ago they held a Royal Tea Dance to celebrate the Royal Wedding, with local ballroom dancers coming along to the group to give a demonstration and encourage the members to get up and have a go. It was such a lovely afternoon. Recently Woodwind of Dunmow and The Woodwind of Stortford have entertained the group, past events have included African Drumming, a casino morning, percussion workshop, belly dancing, a one man band and lots more. The group is held in the New Apton Centre, Apton Rd, Bishop’s Stortford on a Wednesday, and soon to be opening in Birchanger Village Hall on a Tuesday from 10am until 3pm including a hot lunch, half days are also available. If you would like to have a free taster or for more information please contact Debbie, details below.

the rhodes Support Group retain rhodes for the community Following East Herts Council’s proposal to build a new Arts Venue on the Old River Lane in Bishop’s Stortford an independent group has been formed to support the retention of the Rhodes Arts Complex and Bishop’s Stortford Museum in South Road.

Whatever the outcome of the East Herts Council’s proposals the members of the Rhodes Support Group do not wish to see a building which is popular, fit-for- purpose, works well for the local community and has seen significant improvements over the years, go to waste.

The Town Council has agreed in principle to contribute to the on-going costs of East Herts Council’s proposed new Arts venue in Old River Lane. If it does so, there is a danger it could withdraw all, or substantially reduce its current financial support for the Rhodes Arts Complex in South Road. This would make it very difficult for the Rhodes Trustees to maintain a viable business.

As part of our campaign we launched a petition at the town’s Carnival on 16th June to ‘Call upon Bishop’s Stortford’s Town Council to continue to support the Rhodes Arts Complex and Museum on its current site in South Road by means of an annual grant sufficient to maintain it as a viable venue.’ We obtained over 550 signatures on that afternoon.

The town would be deprived of its Museum and of a thriving facility which currently provides a wide variety of activities - meeting the needs of the local community. The many donors, staff, museum volunteers, ushers and the General Public, have, by their combined efforts and support, contributed to Rhodes’ success. Their contribution must not be ignored.

For anyone else wishing to sign the petition an online version is available at: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/retainrhodes-arts-complex-bishop-s-stortford NOTE: The Rhodes support group is independent of the Rhodes Birthplace Trust and the Rhodes Arts Complex management.

The Hastingwood-based Hospice is organising a charity abseil down the UK’s tallest sculpture – the Orbit tower – on Saturday 25th August 2018 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. St Clare Challenge and Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, said: “Do you want to get your adrenaline pumping and conquer your fear of heights? Then we have the perfect challenge for you! Join us and take part in the UK’s highest freefall abseil at the Olympic Park – you can feel like an Olympic champion and help your local hospice at the same time!” Emma Broadbent continued: “The trained professional instructors from Wire and Sky will give you a comprehensive safety briefing and all the specialist equipment, before escorting you to the upper viewing platform of the ArcelorMittal Orbit. From there, you begin an exhilarating descent to the ground, taking in breathtaking 20-mile vistas across London – including iconic buildings such as the Gherkin, St Paul’s, Canary Wharf and Wembley. As well as, of course, the world-famous sporting venues of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park!”
