WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe August/ september edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION I’m chuckling to myself as I type this - do I dare mention that we are into the second half of the year? I’ve spoken to so many people that are just as mystified as me - why does it seem that time goes so much faster as you get older?! Oh, to be young again and experience the endless days of summer! Back to the present, it is summer and the outdoor events are in full swing! It’s lovely that we have so many to choose from right on our doorstep! As always, there is something for everyone. Over the bank holiday weekend we have the Annual Festival of Flowers and Music & Associated Craft Fair at the church of St James The Great, Thorley (turn to page 23 for full details) and Rhodes Arts Complex has plenty to keep young and old entertained every day of the week! Have a look at our community and what’s on pages to find out more. All of the events and indeed local businesses that feature in this magazine are what makes our Town unique; they won’t be found anywhere else. That’s why it’s so important to keep supporting local where possible, makes sense doesn’t it! Finally, you may remember that at the end of May I took part in Streets2Homes Sleepout 2017 and am very proud to say that through your support I raised £596! Thank you so very much! For a full account of the event turn to page 8.

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
SUMMER IN HAZEL END The Three Horseshoes at Hazel End overlooks the Stort valley. It’s only a couple of miles north of Bishop’s Stortford, but feels very rural, with thatched cottages and even a vineyard nearby. This walk, on country lanes and paths, showcases the varied local countryside. Cross the road opposite the pub and walk straight down Watermill Lane, following it left and eventually past a farm. Just before junction, with road signed Stansted and Manuden, turn left onto bridleway. At end of track, turn left and then right through field and keep straight to road. Cross road, turn right and immediately left along line of trees. Go on through wood and follow path beside or through trees into field. Head for houses. At lane turn left to Farnham and left again on lane to church. Turn right just before church and left on path through field, with views of Hassobury manor. Emerging, over footbridge, onto lane, turn left and simply follow the lane ahead to return to Hazel End.

Our chosen charity streets2homes Raising the roof for homeless awareness Words by Kerrie Eastman, CEO Streets2Homes
Streets2Homes would like to say a big thank you to all 25 participants who were brave enough to take part in the sleep out in the church grounds of St Mary-at-Latton in Harlow on 26th May. We were all kept safe overnight under the watchful eye of our five-security staff; a luxury those who are actually homeless do not have. Thankfully, we also had use of the church hall toilets which again is not a luxury afforded to those who are sleeping rough every night. The weather was kind to us as it was a relatively warm and dry night, imagine how unpleasant sleeping outdoors would be in bad conditions! We had it pretty easy by comparison, but still everyone was looking forward to going back to the comfort of their own home. Volunteers from St Mary-at-Latton were up bright and early and in the church hall from 6am to put on a wonderful English breakfast for us, filling our tummies before we were all homeward bound. Another luxury our homeless don’t get and one for which we were all very grateful indeed. Thank you so very much St Mary-at-Latton church for hosting us again. Thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored the efforts of those who took part – we have raised an amazing £3,740.25 and we still have money coming in too!

It was such a pleasure to see our work so fully supported and to meet those who were taking part; some for the first time and some familiar faces who have joined us every year. This year, we welcomed a group from the Herts and Essex Community Farm, two reverends (one who slept all night in his collar!) a couple of dad and daughter duos and many other wonderful members of the community including CM Connection’s very own Lorraine Perry. Most of us are lucky enough not to know what it feels like to sleep rough night after night. Our annual sleep out replicates just a tiny part of the overall experience, but crucially it raises money so we can help our homeless community. The sleep out just reinforces how important our services are, how lonely and dangerous the still of the night can be and how lucky I am to have a home; how lucky we all are.

local business people in person Name and Business: Bradley Goodman co-director of Harlow Garden Services Ltd.
they do excellent fresh food and a good selection of beers.
Where do you live? We moved from Church Langley to Manuden about a year and a half ago, to a lovely 17th Century cottage.
I set up my business because… I have always wanted to go down the path of horticulture/landscaping and running my own business from the age of about 12. I first started growing plants and selling them locally and I then completed a degree in Horticulture and Landscape Management. I set up the business with my business partner 11 years ago and we have steadily grown the business.
What’s your favourite local shop? It Is fairly new but I like the Bishop’s Cave, they do lovely cheeses, but if you looked on my bank statement it would be Jojo Maman Bebe - as it’s my wife’s favourite shop! What’s your favourite local venue? I like going to Rosey Lea on a Saturday afternoon for lunch after I have taken my daughter to ballet. What do you like best about Stortford? I really like going to the Castle Gardens park with my wife and daughter. I also like the different independent shops and tea rooms. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love spending time with my family, either walking our dogs or doing the allotment with my daughter. We also like going to the Rose and Crown in Bentfield Green,
Strength through connections, building business together. We provide networking events for both new and established small businesses.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? We recently won an award from one of our suppliers, The Natural Paving Company, for the Best Garden Patio - this is a National award and it will be in next year’s brochure - we were really chuffed! Favourite one liner? It’s always hard to think of something like this but how about - Velcro? What a rip off!

Bishop’s Stortford choral society “A really enjoyable, spirited performance of Handel” Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society sang Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Four Coronation Anthems with the Bishops Stortford Sinfonia, on 8 July in All Saints Church in Bishops Stortford. Andrew Bruce, Head of Music at Bishops Stortford College, said the choir’s energy and enthusiastic and compelling delivery kept the audience on the edge of their seats to the last notes of the Dixit. There were stunning solos by sopranos Emily Armour and Daisy Walford and tenor Richard Robbins, the counter tenor, Magid El-Bushra, was sublime and the bass, Michael Craddock produced delightfully rich tones. Mr Bruce found it was a really enjoyable and spirited performance, thanks to the excellent interpretation and direction of Richard Brain, the Choral Society’s Music Director and conductor. The Four Coronation Anthems were sung with delightful contrast, ending with a very fresh rending of Zadok the Priest. Mr Bruce said he was impressed that the Choral Society had successfully tackled such a
demanding repertoire and was pleased to see this very good collaboration with Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia. The Choral Society raised money at the Concert for Bishop’s Stortford Winter Night Shelter, which continues its support beyond the winter months to help clients get their lives back on track, operating out of the Holy Trinity Church, South Street. Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is a group of over 80 singers. It is always open to new members and has its next open rehearsal on 14 September. Next season the Choral Society will sing Bach’s Mass in B minor, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and some Elgar, Whitacre and Chilcott. It rehearses on a Thursday evening at 8pm at Water Lane United Reformed Church between September and July.

opened their doors for a showcase On Monday 5th June 2017, Thorley U3A opened their doors, to members of their own U3A, visitors and neighbouring U3As. Most of the 45 Interest Groups displayed their range of activities, show-casing that when retirement or semi retirement becomes a reality for the over 50’s, life doesn’t have to stop. And the refreshments team did an excellent job serving a free tea and cakes! U3A, or University of the Third Age, now has over 1000 U3A’s in the UK. In the Stort Valley area we are well supported with thriving groups in Thorley, Bishop’s Stortford, Stansted, Sawbridgeworth and Harlow, as well as Dunmow and Buntingford. Anyone is invited to come along to meet us. As a group we are part of an International Network who offer learning opportunities, outdoor pursuits, social events and outings which are run by unpaid volunteers for the benefit of our members. Find out more about Thorley U3A visit our website, details below. The U3A is a self-help learning organisation for the active retired and semi-retired. It is made up of independent groups run by their members. Everyone who is on the committee runs one of the groups or helps at monthly meetings are volunteers. pact for autism Annual Charity Ball set up by Harlow-based charity celebrates living with Autism PACT for Autism, a local charity set up to support children and adults with Autism, has organised a Charity Ball to celebrate the achievements of people living with autism in the local community and beyond. The Charity Ball will feature a live performance by Dean Beadle, public speaker on autism and entertainer. It will also include videos of the highlights at PACT events over the year, art created by PACT children, as well as a tribute to all the friends and family that supported PACT over the year. The theme of the Ball, ‘Lights, Camera, Auction!’ draws from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood,
while also celebrating the increasing awareness of diversity and inclusion in our films and media. The stars on the Hollywood walk of fame was chosen as the logo, as it also reflects the PACT for Autism logo, a star, and its celebration of uniqueness and value in people living with additional needs. The Charity Ball will take place at the Manor of Groves Hotel on the 4th November 2017, and will feature a delicious three-course meal, champagne reception, live disco and a discount on rooms at the hotel. It will be a spectacular night - our biggest party yet - and at £55 a head, not one to miss this winter! Sé London are proud sponsors of the PACT for Autism Charity Ball on behalf of Eva Sharifi. PACT for Autism would like to say a big thank you to Sé London and Eva for their generosity. Drapers Pallet Trucks Ltd are the proud sponsors of the Raffle at this year’s Charity Ball.

Local history
bishop’s stortford history society The Society has its roots in the Bishop’s Stortford & District Local History Society which was set up in 1955. Its members in those days were actively involved in research and in collecting objects relating to the history of the area. More recently the Society has widened its focus beyond local history. It organises a programme of talks as well as summer visits to local places of interest. The annual subscription is £15 which allows free access to all talks, some of which are held at the Rhodes Arts Complex, in collaboration with the Bishop’s Stortford Museum, with whom the
Society has close links. Its publications are listed on the web site www.bshistory.moonfruit.com, together with the programme of talks, which run from September to May each year. If you are interested in joining the Society or attending a talk (visitors pay just £3) please contact Pauline Francis, details below.
