WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe October/ november edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION As always, I’m delighted to bring local businesses and community events straight to your door. There’s lots and lots going on this October and into the autumn and it’s all local hoorah! Have a look at the community pages and editorials in this month’s edition. There is a plethora of activities and events to keep us all happy AND busy! Many local events are run by unpaid volunteers, you may even be one of them! Sometimes they’re sponsored by local companies which is great, more often than not they’re organised and funded by people that are passionate about the cause, organisation or concept. Raising funds and/or awareness is what it’s all about and Stortford is full of these amazing people. If we can attend just one event, a coffee morning, a quiz night or a concert we will ensure that these groups, clubs, charities and facilities will be here for the next generation. That’s a good thing, right? Don’t leave it to someone else. As Mahatma Gandhi said: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Pub & café Walks
Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Epic Epping Forest Copper coloured trees, ancient embankments and sunken paths through the autumn woods. Half an hour’s drive south of Bishop’s Stortford, the huge expanses of Epping Forest begin. Turn left out of the Forest Gate pub (www.facebook. com/Forestgateinnpub) along busy Theydon Road. Just past Ivy Chimneys Road, turn R along wide grassy area between trees. Before cricket ground, turn L through trees and keep straight along well-defined track, with yellow arrows, through forest. Follow the waymarks for nearly seven miles to complete the “Oak Trail” through woods, fields and villages. Look out for deer in the sanctuary and squirrels in the trees. In Theydon Bois, keep going past shops. At Bull pub, fork L on Station Approach, L again into Forest Drive and keep straight on path at end. Continue to follow the arrows and waymarks as they lead you over the M25 and back to the pub. You can download a pdf map of the route here: goo.gl/U6F9ye. Ordnance Survey Explorer map 174 will be helpful too, but don’t worry too much if you get lost – Epping Forest is a lovely place to wander and you can make up your own routes on the fern-fringed tracks through the trees. Special feature
local business people in person Name and Business: Steve Edwards and my business is Stort Blinds. Where do you live? I live in Bishop’s Stortford. What’s your favourite shop? Mr Simms sweet shop takes me back to when you’re a kid and want sticky sweets! What’s your favourite Venue? The Cave wine bar, incredible wines, beer & lots of lovely cheese. What do you like best about Stortford? Walking into town in 10 minutes and we have a cinema, train station and tons of restaurants. For a small town it has lots to offer. What do you like doing when you’re not working? Spending time with my wife and 3 boys, playing
golf and watching football. I set up my business because... Having been in the interiors business for years I decided to go out on my own and offer a better service to that which was available. We pride ourselves on being local and giving the best value products. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Two things - having a major operation to remove some nasty cancer cells and telling the kids they can finally have a puppy! What’s the funniest one liner you’ve heard? Whilst my friend was getting a soaking on the golf course I was reaching for my camera and he just shouted, “Get the Lynx”!

Bishop’s Stortford Art society Winter exhibition: adventures in Art
Returning to Ecco in November, the Bishop’s Stortford Art Society will be holding an exhibition of members’ work upstairs at the Ecco charity shop on South Street, Bishop’s Stortford as it’s helpful staff and central location shows off their work wonderfully. All paintings are created by local artists with a large selection on show, including watercolours, oils, acrylics and pastels across a variety of subjects including portraits, landscapes and local scenes as well as abstracts. Unframed work will also be available, so there should be something to appeal to all tastes and budgets. David Cooper, President of the BSAS, had this to say: “We not only want to show our artwork but to meet people who want to join the Society. We’ve had people tell us that their work isn’t good enough, but the first step is a love of art, the second being practice. We can all learn new techniques, that’s why we hold demonstrations from professional artists, followed up by working evenings to try out their style. Members can chose what they want to attend from our programme of events, or just attend as a guest, but only as a member can they hang work in our exhibitions. So if you are thinking about

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING BEEF AND PEPPER STROGANOFF 350g tagliatelle 1tbsp olive oil 4 flash-fry steaks (each about 125g), cut into thin strips 1 large onion, peeled and thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced 300ml carton half-fat crème fraiche 2tsp coarsely ground black pepper 1-2 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley
This
is a fabulously quick and easy supper that is packed full of flavour. Serve with a watercress or rocket salad, if liked.
1. Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the tagliatelle and cook for 8-10 minutes or according to the packet instructions. 2. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and stir-fry the steak strips over a very high heat until browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes until golden then add the pepper slices and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Return the steak strips and any meat juices to the pan and stir in the crème fraiche and ground black pepper. Heat through gently. 4. Stir in the parsley and adjust the seasoning to taste. Drain the tagliatelle and divide between four warmed shallow pasta bowls. Spoon the steak mixture on top and garnish with a little more freshly ground black pepper.
TIP: Add a spoonful of wholegrain mustard with the crème fraiche for an extra piquant flavour or try a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

pact for autism the sen charity event of the region PACT for Autism has worked tirelessly over 12 years to widen access to autism services in the East Herts and West Essex region. We take pride in our connections. Together we have built a network of support and services for autism in West Essex, and the progress we have made in supporting families, together, is commendable.
to connect with the other organisations that make it happen. The kids are growing – and so are we.
Now we face the future. Autism support for the specific needs of women with autism remains under-provisioned, and there is a steep drop in support, as well as a lack of confidence in current structures, in providing for autistic youth transitioning into adulthood, aged 18-25. In the past year alone we have been in contact with 34 organisations and influencers in the field, and the PACT for Autism Charity Ball will bring these stakeholders together. This is your chance

the royal british legion
A new home for the royal british legion On August 1st the Bishop’s Stortford Branch of The Royal British Legion, the Women’s Section & the Poppy Appeal took up residence in a new home. Although it was very sad to leave 28 Windhill with all its history, we must now write a new chapter at Room 2 in The New Apton Centre, 22a, Apton Road. This year the Poppy Appeal will be run from there by a team of volunteers led by new Poppy Appeal Organiser Denise Hudson. As always at this time of year we are looking to add new names to our core of stalwart Poppy Appeal Collectors.
If you have a couple of hours to spare during the Poppy Appeal period 28th October to 12 November 2017 & would like a rewarding experience then please contact Denise to volunteer.
The Poppy Appeal raises vital money to enable The Royal British Legion to continue supporting our Armed Forces – both retired & serving & their families. The Bishop’s Stortford Community are extremely generous & last year over £42,000 was collected.

policing our local community
advice from Herts police... As the evenings draw in and Halloween and Bonfire nights approach, Herts police issue several posters to ensure that everyone enjoys their evenings. There are three in total, two of which are included with this article. The stay safe leaflet (below) gives some safety advice and there is also a “trick or treaters welcome” poster which can be put in windows. The most important one is the ‘trick or treaters not welcome’ poster (see opposite) which we usually advise older members of the community to put in their windows. I am happy for people to get in contact with me if they want either one of the posters or the stay safe leaflet but they are also available to download from Herts Police website. Myself and PCSO Paul usually visit the local schools before Halloween and Bonfire Night to speak with the students about safety and we will be out and about in the Town on the night – with sweets! General advice is: • Pumpkin watch – only visit houses that have a
24
pumpkin displayed or have been decorated, as this is a sure sign they welcome trick or treaters. • Always trick or treat in numbers – never go alone and always be supervised by an adult. • Tricks are not nice – if you cause damage you could be prosecuted. We have also seen a slight increase in theft from work vans in Town just recently. Our advice is: • Remove tools from vans when left overnight • If removal of tools is not possible, fit a tool safe and ensure it is fully secured with good quality locks • Engrave or mark tools and boxes/cases with postcode, house name or number • Fit additional door locks If you see any suspicious behaviour in your community, please call 101. Hi, let me introduce myself, I’m Keiran Mitchell and I want to share with you how in 2012 I made the career change into support work. I began working with Harlow Youth Vision supporting vulnerable young people and then mentoring offenders with the Essex branch of SOVA, who support people in developing the skills to take control of their lives and reach their full potential. Soon after, I joined Streets2Homes as a volunteer and within a couple of weeks felt as though I had been there for years. Everything about the place felt right; I have often described coming to Streets2Homes as discovering a ‘Keiran-shaped-hole in the universe’ I was exactly where I was meant to be, I was home. I eventually began working as paid staff in the role of Outreach Worker. The team were so encouraging and supportive in my first role; we were a small team with limited space and very limited funds - I didn’t even have a desk and perched wherever I could put my laptop for a while, but we made it work and it was brilliant! I was given a surgery at Occassio House, supporting young people whose tenancies were at risk or who were facing eviction/ homelessness. It was a profound moment for me, walking into that building with briefcase as years prior, as a young homeless person, I

had walked in there with a black bin bag over my shoulder. I’ll never forget one of my first appointments when a cocky young lad sitting slouched in the chair told me “you don’t know nothing, mate.” It was an amazing privilege to reply, “Let me tell you my story.” Later, I was given a full-time post (and a desk!) which evolved into my current role - Housing & Project Coordinator. In my job, I am primarily responsible for overseeing the Deposit Scheme and have the joy of supporting people from the first moment of contact, right the way through to handing them a set of keys for their new home. This never gets old. I continue to meet and get to know the most extraordinary people, with unbelievable and sometimes unthinkable stories. Where we work there is something more valuable than money and twice as scarce – hope. I have the opportunity every day to see the effects of hope returning, shining into the cracks in people’s lives. It really is a very special place. I have been blessed in being given creative freedom with projects and fundraising initiatives over the years; putting together a health & wellbeing project, providing support in all areas of physical, mental & emotional, including sexual health, was a personal favorite of mine. We discovered poets, artists and dancers in our midst and confidence sored!

We also ran a ‘romance academy’ where we looked at what healthy relationships look like; it was loads of fun and very amusing. Things like ‘The Big Chill’ live music fundraiser and ‘My Story’ which explores our service users’ personal journeys to, and through, Streets2Homes, giving them the opportunity to share on video. I am blessed to be able to pitch these ideas and be given the support to run with it. More recently I have set up a ‘Property Search & Tenancy Support Workshop’ to meet the ever-increasing need for affordable housing in the private rented sector. This has proved invaluable for people who are unsure on where to start when it comes to privately renting and in providing clients with information and advice

around tenancies, rights and responsibility and housing legislation. I’ve also accessed lots of training and most notably gaining a Level 3 NVQ in Housing and a Diploma in Psychology. There is always opportunity to grow, develop and learn new skills here. The charity itself has expanded and evolved over the years and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it. We have grown into acquiring our own property, increasing staff members, accessing local authority nominations and increasing the number of private landlords working with us exponentially. The future looks bright, and there is always hope here.

Grove cottage Will be going far in their new accessible mini bus
Grove Cottage – the home of Bishop’s Stortford Mencap is delighted to announce that it has taken delivery of a brand new, fully wheelchair accessible, 17-seater Volkswagen Crafter minibus as part of the second round of the Department for Transport (DfT) Community Minibus Fund. The minibus will be used to pick up and return local people with learning disabilities from their homes to attend the many weekly clubs on offer at Grove Cottage, as well as being used for various day trips out.
develop their potential, avoid social isolation and to provide respite for their families. To ensure that we can continue to provide a range of transport services, we need more volunteers to drive the minibus and we would welcome anyone interested to email volunteer@ mencapgrovecottage.org or call 01279 656085.
Richard Smith, Treasurer at Grove Cottage said: “This is another key milestone in the 50 years of our charity. Our current minibus is over ten years old and it was really time for a new one, so we applied to the Community Minibus Fund and thankfully we were successful. The new minibus is fully accessible and can take four wheelchairs which means that we can transport more of our members comfortably and safely. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Department for Transport for the grants received from them that made the acquisition of the new minibus possible.”
Bill Freeman, Chief Executive at the Community Transport Association, who administered the fund on behalf of the DfT said: “CTA was thrilled to facilitate the second round of the community minibus fund on behalf of the Department for Transport. The vehicles awarded to successful applicants will make a massive difference to the people and communities they serve, opening up access to education and social activities, employment and vital public services. On behalf of everyone at the CTA I would like congratulate to Grove Cottage on their new vehicle; I look forward to seeing the impact it will have.”
Andrea Charity, Operations Manager at Grove Cottage also commented: “This new minibus is not just a vehicle to take people from A to B, it is a vehicle that supports and enables people of all ages with learning disabilities to access our social and educational activities to
