WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe oct/nov edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION You may have noticed in the last edition that I had increased the “Listings” pages to incorporate more local groups and organisations, this was as a direct result of your survey feedback. The Listings, like our community pages are FREE for local clubs, groups and organisations - not businesses (sorry!). So if you run a community group etc and you don’t take a salary, please get in touch so that I can add you to the page. Interestingly, a significant number of those surveyed said that they enjoyed the recipe pages, so I will always try and run at least one - I can do savoury or sweet alternating or perhaps run both as I’ve done in this edition. Let me know your preference. More changes and enhancements are planned; they just take a little time, so please bear with me. China Trek 2018 Update: Some hill and stair/step training and another 13 miler, this time hip protested so much that I limped the last 3 miles homes... but I got home! It’s getting real now and by the next edition we will have completed the trek! I’ll share some photo’s, in the meantime please keep supporting us and this amazing charity, thank you x. Our Just Giving page - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ mariandlorraineschinatrek2018. Until next time,
Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
Autumnal Birchanger In October and November Birchanger Wood in Bishop’s Stortford is lit up with seasonal colours. Cross the Stansted Road outside Home & Eat and turn right for 200m. Just beyond Goodliffe Park bus stop, turn left up little steps between hedges. Continue straight ahead to corner of Wickes’ car park, where a narrow tarmac path between fences winds into Birchanger Wood, an area of ancient woodland, recorded long ago as Bircehangra (“wooded slope with birch trees”). In recent years, the Birchanger Wood Trust (www.birchangerwoodtrust.org) has done a fabulous job of improving paths through this lovely area, full of anemones, bluebells, leafy shade, autumn colour or frosty silhouettes, depending on the season. Keep straight ahead and follow the path along the right hand edge of the woods for a mile, always bearing right, but without leaving the wood. Eventually, you will see Birchwood School playing fields and the wall of a warehouse (a fruit ripening depot) ahead through the trees. Turn left along a defined path and follow this path left around the edge of the woods, running parallel with the ring road for a while. The woods here are less peaceful, but still beautiful. Keep the edge of the woods on your right, eventually finding yourself walking next to fields rather than road. Follow the main route left downhill to re-join the path you were on at the start. Turn right and retrace your steps to Home & Eat, where you can buy lunches, teas and an extraordinary selection of other things too. LOCATION:

bishop’s stortford choral society homage to a pioneer: 100 years on from women’s suffrage What do you remember of the Suffragettes? Fire-bombing post boxes and empty buildings? Chaining themselves to railings? Being subjected to force-feeding in prison? And of course the death of Emily Davison at the Epsom Derby. A Suffragette you may not have heard of, though, is Ethel Smythe. She was a composer, whose Mass in D was premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in 1893 and whose second opera, Der Wald, was performed at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1904 – the first and last opera composed by woman that was performed there until the 2016-17 season. Ethel Smythe joined the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1910 and dedicated two years of her life to its efforts to achieving votes for women. She wrote The March of the Women, which became the anthem for women’s suffrage, and took part in direct action –she was arrested for breaking windows along with 100 others and served two months in Holloway prison.
Ethel Smythe’s contemporary, Hubert Parry, and reach their own view as to whether it was prejudice that kept Ethel’s work unheard for most of the years since it was written. Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society will be performing the Mass with the Bishop’s Storford Sinfonia at 7.30pm on Saturday 1 December in All Saints’ Church, Stansted Road, Bishop’s Stortford. Information and tickets can be found at: www.singwithbscs. org.uk
In this 100th year since the first women were allowed to vote in Britain, Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is bringing to you Ethel Smythe’s Mass in D. It was described by Rian Evans earlier this year as having “indisputable eloquence” … with unconventional text, word-setting and scoring, and its Agnus Dei having a “mellow richness”. The audience will be able to contrast the Mass to the work of

all things Pc column you’re never too old to get PC Savvy by Mark Rowley
In almost every house today there is a piece of technology that enables its residents to gain access to the internet. If I was to sort all of my customers into demographic groups I think it’s safe to say that the largest group would consist of the over 60’s. While many are tech savvy, there are some who are not. There are various reasons for this, and fear of technology is probably paramount. Like it or not we are now entering the age of what’s been called the ‘Internet of Things’ which sounds a little sci-fi and cryptic but it’s real and it’s here. What it means is that we are now entering a technological phase whereby more and more day to day objects/appliances are connecting to the internet. We now have smart watches, smart TV’s, smart meters and smart lighting. We’ll soon have smart fridges/freezers that will be able to re-order groceries when it knows you’re running low. Cars that will be able to drive themselves using road data obtained from the internet and much more. A lot of people deem computers to be very complicated, which is true if you wish to take one apart and learn about its circuitry. But don’t forget, computers were created to make our lives easier. And they do. So those that are avoiding technology, could be missing out on internet access, and potentially making their lives more difficult as a result. They are in danger of falling behind. I met a gentleman in his 80’s who had sadly recently lost his wife. It was she who knew how to use their computer, while he had avoided it. After she passed away he realised he wasn’t actually sure how to turn the computer on, and

All Things PC hadn’t the first idea how to access the internet. This meant that he was unable to access their email and receive and respond to correspond from friends and family. My own in-laws, who are in their early 70’s, may know how to turn their laptop on but still rely on us to purchase things through online shopping and booking their holiday flights for them each year, as they are adamant that using the internet is too complicated. They have missed out on cheaper flights because they have had to wait for one of us to be available to help. The elderly gentleman I knew decided to tackle his aversion and I recently received an email from him, that he was very proud of, having composed and sent it all by himself. He is connected once more and the world has opened up to him. I’m still working with the inlaws! The internet, and the devices that connect to it, are there for our convenience. You wouldn’t insist on living in a house that didn’t have electricity after all, and we soon got used to television as the norm’. If you want to know more about the Internet of Things and what’s around the corner for all of us then a simple Google search will throw up many articles. What’s that? You don’t know how to use Google? (See what I did there?)
Whether you require customised computer training, software or hardware support, help with viruses and malware, data recovery, backups or computers built from scratch. All Things PC can help, just ask. Our work is fully insured, we don’t charge a call out fee and we offer free, no obligation quotes.

The essex Magician My interest in magic was sparked as a small boy by my Grandad pulling coins from behind my ear; a bit cliché but true! In later life, I became a hobbyist magician and was known as the fella’ that would do a trick at a work’s event, after a dinner party or at Christmas, but there came a point where I had a real desire to see if I could get to a professional level and make a living at performing magic. So, I found a couple of magicians who offered tuition and their guidance, plus my own hard work and practice, enabled me to reach a professional standard. Around 10 years ago I dipped my toe into the world of professional magic and I haven’t looked back. I’m now blessed to be doing my long term hobby as my full time job and I appreciate that this is a rare thing. Around half of the events that I get booked for are weddings. This is a joy! I get to work in some beautiful venues, dress up smartly with all of the guests and play a part in what are always happy days. I’m usually booked to perform during the drinks reception which overlaps with the time for official photographs. Sometimes I perform at the dining tables during the wedding breakfast or at the evening reception. Brides and Grooms are now increasingly conscious of the amount of time their guests spend hanging around at weddings and look to provide entertainment for them at certain points in the day. I have worked at wedding venues all over Essex and, most frequently at Parklands, Fennes, Down Hall, Leez Priory and Stoke by Nayland. As well as weddings I perform at private parties; these can be everything from lavish affairs to a garden BBQ for a few friends and family. I also perform at corporate events such as trade dinners, staff parties, conferences and charity fund raisers. I continue to love what I do and if I can add some magic to your event, feel free to contact me for a no-obligation chat.

2018 Poppy Appeal - urgent call for help The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community - serving men and women, veterans, and their families, and over 300,000 people are needed to help with their annual fundraising campaign - the Poppy Appeal. The Bishop’s Stortford Royal British Legion Branch is preparing for the Appeal in this very special year of the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1, and we are in urgent need of collectors and helpers. The Poppy Appeal starts with the Launch Day on Saturday 27th October and continues to Sunday 11th November Armistice Day. Last year over £44,800 was collected from the Bishop’s Stortford population and it will be a tall order if we are to exceed this figure this year.
for people to wear a poppy. You will have an opportunity to choose where you collect - it could be manning the Poppy Appeal stall in Sainsbury’s Jackson Square or other supermarkets for a couple of hours, or helping to deliver poppy boxes. Crocheted and Knitted poppies are always very popular fund raisers and if you can knit or crochet some poppies for us we would be pleased to hear from you. If you would like to volunteer, or would like to know more about the Poppy Appeal please contact: Terrie Archer, TRBL Branch Secretary mob: 07804 778036 or email terriearcher@hotmail. com

Grove cottage Special Needs nursery receives a “good” rating from Ofsted Grove Cottage’s Special Needs Nursery recently had a visit from Ofsted where the inspectors gave the facility a rating of ‘Good’, something that the staff of Grove Cottage are thrilled about. The Grove Cottage Special Needs Nursery aims to develop the long-term potential of children with learning disabilities by providing specialist education and social support at an early age. The nursery provides one-to-one (sometimes two-toone) support with highly qualified staff, who adapt the Early Years curriculum to help the children succeed to the best of their ability, at their own level. They teach and develop skills which the children may be delayed in such as speech and mobility while they also encourage them to meet and build positive relationships with other children. The nursery was rated as ‘Good’ in all four areas of inspection: Effectiveness of the leadership and management; Quality of teaching, learning and assessment; Personal development, behaviour and welfare; Outcomes for children. Maria Sims, Nursery Manager at Grove Cottage, was thrilled with the result saying “We are so
pleased with the positive comments in our most recent report. The team all work so hard to give these children the very best start in life so it is wonderful that this has been recognised. Our focus now at the start of the new term is to continue to support these children as well as their families and carers to ensure that they are in the best possible position to continue their educational journey.” This nursery, which costs approximately £80,000 per year to run, is a unique facility to the Bishop’s Stortford area and it has been known for parents to travel up to an hour to access the services. This nursery is the only one in the county that specialises in caring for preschool children with learning disabilities and is the only facility that will accept children pre-diagnosis. Places are currently available for children with learning disabilities within the nursery, for more information please call 01279 656085 or email nursery@mencapgrovecottage.org.

hertfordshire county council
GET YOUR SALT IN NOW IN TIME FOR WINTER Resident and community groups can get free salt to grit their streets from Hertfordshire County Council, as the council starts to gear up for the winter. The county council is also offering salt to schools to help them stay open during icy weather, as well as to parish and town councils who can use their local knowledge to identify exactly where best to use the salt during severe weather. District and borough councils that help with clearing high priority pavements can apply for up to 30 tonnes of salt to assist with highway treatments at no cost. Resident and community groups can apply for up to 680kg of salt, and schools can ask for up to 1 tonne. Last year some 200 local groups took advantage of the offer. Phil Bibby, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “It may seem quite early to be thinking about snow and ice, but last winter showed how important it is to be prepared. We’ll be
ordering thousands of tonnes of salt for the county’s main roads and while we’re doing that it seems sensible to order some for resident and community groups, or parish and town councils, who want to help keep their local roads and pavements clear. Our gritters can’t get everywhere, so it’s a real help when local groups are willing to do their bit too.” The salt will be provided for use on the public highway, not on private property, and the county council can only make one delivery of salt at the beginning of the winter. Application forms can be found at www. hertfordshire.gov.uk/salting and must be received by the county council by 31 October.

GROUP COORDINATOR REQUIRED - COULD THAT BE YOU? We are looking to recruit a Group Coordinator to the East Herts & West Essex Group. We currently have a team of friendly and active volunteers who are working to provide exercise, support and social opportunities to people affected by MS in the local area.
We tend to meet as a team on a monthly basis and keep in touch via phone and email as and when is needed. The current group volunteers are active throughout the year, our volunteering roles are flexible and open to sharing and we aim to fit in with each other wherever possible.
We’re at a really exciting time in the group where we are looking at our longer term plans for activities and fundraising, as well as the opportunity to reach out to new groups of people. The group is in a strong financial position due to legacies received in recent years hence we need to develop spending plans for the coming years. We are looking for a Group Coordinator to join the team and to get involved with developing the group in different ways and would love to hear from someone with fresh ideas and a willingness to work with the existing team to maximise the group’s potential.
This is a great opportunity to get involved with a national charity at a local level. We are looking for someone friendly and organised with good communication skills and a willingness to represent the MS Society in the local area on behalf of the group. An excellent team player, we’re looking forward to working with someone who can get involved in the group and support other volunteers, as well as working closely with MS Society local staff.

the royal british legion Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90) Ypres Belgium On Wednesday the 8th August 2018 eighteen hundred Standard Bearers and eighteen hundred Wreath Carriers marched through Ypres town square to the Menin Gate for the One Hundred Days Ceremony to mark the centenary of the launch of the ‘Hundred Days’ offensive and to recreate the march of WW1 War Veterans and War Widows that took place in 1928. They came from all over the UK and also from further afield – a Standard from Hong Kong and a wreath from South Africa were spotted. The route was lined several deep with RBL members who had travelled to Ypres for this special occasion, locals and other visitors – some from The Netherlands and Spain were noted. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and security was low key. The whole parade was a great spectacle and a unique way of saying ‘Thank You’ to all those who gave their lives in the Great War. A short service took place at the Menin Gate and the wreaths were laid. They were later put on display for viewing by the general public and formed an impressive sight. The proceedings could be followed on a big screen by those in the square. The parade returned and the participants joined those already in the square for an afternoon of comradeship and entertainment provided by The Central Band of The Royal British Legion, The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland, The London Welsh Male Voice Choir and Sam Jefferson culminating in a rousing rendition of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. Standard Bearer Arthur King, Wreath Carrier Peter Wilson, Chair Denise Hudson and Secretary Terrie Archer all from the Bishop’s Stortford Branch of TRBL were able to meet up in the square after the march to talk about being a part of this truly memorable day.

Charity of the year scorching firewalk fundraiser Calling all courageous soles... are you brave enough to conquer the coals for St Clare Hospice? Following the success of their 2017 Firewalk, in which more than forty fierce fire-walkers raised over £10,000 for the Hospice, the Hastingwoodbased charity will be hosting another scorching event on Sunday 28th October at the hospice itself. St Clare supporters will be lining up to walk barefoot over red-hot wood embers, smouldering at over 800 degrees Fahrenheit, to raise vital funds for the charity. Amongst last year’s brave participants were two members of the St Clare Hospice Inpatient Unit team: Vanna Poulter the IPU Manager, and Essie Ducat, a nursing assistant. Essie Ducat said: “I’ve never done anything like this before and was nervous about it, but I absolutely loved it. I just kept thinking of all the patients I have cared for, and knew that I was making a difference to so many families by raising vital funds. It was such a thrill to cross the coals and gave me a real buzz – I encourage everyone to try it!” St Clare Challenge and Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, said: “Are you worried about being troubled by chilly toes this autumn? Want to warm your feet by the fire? What better way to get toasty than by entering the St Clare Firewalk! Not only will you keep the chill off as the weather turns cooler, you will also help to raise a scorching amount for your local hospice. Help us hit

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: savoury
LOOK WHAT’S ONE PAN LEMON AND HERB CHICKEN ROAST
50g butter, softened 2 garlic cloves, crushed 3 tbsp fresh chopped mixed herbs (see Tip) 2 lemons Salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 chicken thigh portions 500g baby potatoes, halved 2 tbsp virgin olive oil 4 sprigs fresh rosemary, broken into small sprigs
A quick and easy roast for midweek or Sunday lunch with hardly any washing up!
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6. Place the butter in a bowl and beat in the garlic, mixed herbs and the zest and 1 tbsp juice from one of the lemons. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Ease the skin away from the chicken thigh portions and gently push about 1 tsp of the herb and garlic butter under the skin of each portion then smooth the skin back down. Place all the chicken portions in a large roasting tin. 3. Toss the potatoes in half the olive oil and season. Scatter around the chicken along with the rosemary sprigs. Cut the second lemon into thin wedges and nestle them in between then chicken and potatoes. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. 4. Roast in the pre-heated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes until the chicken is golden and cooked though and the potatoes are crisp and tender, turning the potatoes and basting the chicken with the pan juices once or twice. Serve from the roasting tin with steamed green vegetables, if liked.
TIPs: You can use any combination of mixed herbs for the garlic and herb butter – thyme, parsley and oregano all go particularly well with chicken. Or just choose one strongly flavoured herb such as tarragon.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: sweet
COOKING SALTED CARAMEL, CHOCOLATE & CHILLI TARTLETS Flour, for dusting 250g ready-made sweet shortcrust pastry 260g jar salted caramel sauce 25g unsalted butter 100g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 1 small red chilli, deseeded and chopped (see Tip) Shredded fresh basil leaves, to decorate (optional) Icing sugar, for dusting
It
may sound like an unusual combination but a hint of fiery chilli complements a rich chocolate dessert perfectly. Serve with a spoonful of thick cream or Greek yogurt for a really indulgent dessert.
1. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line six 10cm tartlet tins. Prick the bases with a fork and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. 2. Line each tartlet tin with a circle of baking paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes. Remove the beans and paper and bake the tarts for a further 4-5 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Leave to cool completely, then remove the pastry cases from the tins and place on a board. 3. Divide the salted caramel sauce between the cold tartlet pastry cases, smoothing the surfaces level with the back of a teaspoon. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 4. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir the mixture until smooth. Cool for 20 minutes then spread over the salted caramel filling. Chill for 1 hour or until set. 5. To serve, sprinkle the chopped chilli pepper over the set chocolate topping and scatter over the shredded basil (if using). Dust with icing sugar. TIP: Blanch the chopped chilli pepper in boiling water for 1 minute, then refresh
under cold water and pat dry with kitchen paper. This will remove a little of the fiery heat from the chilli. If you prefer, replace the fresh chopped chilli with a sprinkle of dried chilli flakes. PLEASE MENTION THE CM23 CONNECTION WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS
