Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Bocking in Bloom This walk through the colourful houses north of Braintree passes a riverside nature reserve and a windmill. And hundreds of new spring bulbs were planted in the pretty park here last year so why not take a stroll to see them in flower? Walk from Cool Beans café through Bocking Public Gardens in Braintree. Shortly before circular pond, turn R onto tarmac path and L onto Causeway. Keep straight along Bradford Street and turn R after house 50 into Philips Chase. Continue along narrow lane ahead and turn right onto River Mead. Fork left along tarmac path and branch left again to join riverside path. Turn right along River Blackwater and keep going over boardwalk. Where path ends, turn right up steps to join tarmac path and keep going in same direction. Cross footbridge left and turn left again along lane beyond. Turn right on way-marked grassy path. When it bends left, keep straight into trees and turn right along wooded path. Continue, following path left and turn left again onto Thistley Green Road, through houses. Cross over main road, heading slightly right, and continue on footpath, eventually following it right towards distant windmill. Turn left along Church Street to church. Turn left just before bridge into Dorewards Avenue. Keep straight along The Chase and follow it ahead. When track bends left, keep straight on grassy path and fork right to emerge onto road. Turn right and follow road ahead back to gardens. LOCATION:

bishop’s stortford choral society back to the classics: mozart and haydn Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society are stepping back in time for their next concert of pieces by Haydn and Mozart. Haydn and Mozart learned their trade, composing for the aristocracy in Austria & Hungary and the pieces in this concert all come from the 1780s. This was a time when there was little new classical music in England – perhaps because of the pre-occupation with the American War of Independence and constitutional crisis as Parliament sought to govern while George III undermined the Whig/ Tory coalition working with Pitt the Younger. In Austria, Joseph II became ruler in 1780 and became known for his “war” against feudal privileges and for his secular reforms. Mozart’s Mass in C Minor was first performed in 1783, even though it remained unfinished! Haydn’s symphony was commissioned and premiered in Paris in 1786, a few years before the French revolution resulted in the decapitation of Joseph II’s sister Marie Antionette! Audiences will need to judge for themselves

whether the music represents the end of the old guard or early signs of cultural change. Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society will be performing at 7.30pm on Saturday 30th March in the Methodist Church, Bishop’s Stortford. BSCS Background: Bishops Stortford Choral Society is a group of around 100 singers, led by its Musical Director Richard Brain. It sings large scale choral music by new and established composers and holds its concerts locally, most often in the town. It rehearses on a Thursday evening at 7.45 pm at Water Lane United Reformed Church between September and July. The Society is always open to new members and will hold its next Open Rehearsal for new members on 25 April 2019. For more information go to their website or find them on Facebook.

all things Pc column the importance of backing up your data by Mark Rowley

Unless you have a good knowledge of the working of PC’S and laptops, it’s likely that the early signs of a hard disk drive (HDD) failure will go un-noticed. Usually, by the time a customer calls me with a problem, the health of their HDD has already begun to deteriorate, and sometimes it’s in a very bad shape. Occasionally it has ceased to function completely. The most worrying thing about HDD failure is the potential for loss of data stored on it. Locked in that now unusable device could be thousands of cherished photographs of children and loved ones, or vital emails, work data and personal documents. I had a customer who had spent years researching his family tree, and had downloaded software that allowed him to chart his ancestors dating back to the 1700’s. His HDD had mechanically failed and all the years of work he had put into his hobby was lost forever. So, you see, it really is important to back up your data, and to back it up regularly, before problems start. The most common tell-tale signs that your HDD is beginning to fail are the following: • Your system runs slowly or freezes intermittently • The system crashes or you get blue screens • The HDD begins to make audible noises (clicking) • Accessing data or opening applications takes longer than normal

All Things PC How are you going to prevent the loss of your data? The most common method is to use an external HDD which will connect to your PC via a USB cable. These devices can offer loads of storage at a very reasonable price. Once attached to your PC, you can then set up a backup schedule via Windows or use of a 3rd party application so that your data is backed up regularly or at an interval that suits you. Another method, which is becoming more and more popular these days, is the use of cloud-based storage. This means your data is uploaded to a 3rd party who store this data for you. For this method you will usually have to pay a small monthly fee for a fixed amount of storage and the cost and amount of storage available increases incrementally. This kind of storage can help protect your data in the event of a worstcase scenario such as burglary or fire. However, many people have issues with trusting a 3rd party with all of their data especially in light of the many data breaches we so often hear about these days in the news. There are other methods such as using a USB Thumb/Pen drive, Network Attached Storage (NAS), or even just by simply printing documents off. However you choose to do it, make sure it’s done regularly, and keep what matters to you as safe as possible. Whether you require customised computer training, software or hardware support, help with viruses and malware, data recovery, backups or computers built from scratch. All Things PC can help, just ask. Our work is fully insured, we don’t charge a call out fee and we offer free, no obligation quotes.

Local history bishop’s stortford history society The Society has its roots in the Bishop’s Stortford & District Local History Society which was set up in 1955. Its members in those days were actively involved in research and in collecting objects relating to the history of the area. More recently the Society has widened its focus beyond local history. It organises a programme of talks as well as summer visits to local places of interest. The annual subscription is £15 which allows free access to all talks, some of which are held at the Rhodes Arts Complex, in collaboration with the Bishop’s Stortford Museum, with whom the Society has close links. Its publications are listed on the web site www. bishopsstortfordhistorysociety.org.uk, together with the programme of talks, which run from September to May each year.
