WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe Christmas and New Year edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION I’m humming Christmas carols as I write this edition’s letter, not so strange except I’m writing it in the middle of November! For the past 2 weeks my poor daughter has been woken by my singing carols... I guess you could say I’m a tad excited but then I think, as you get older the excitement is all in the preparation and anticipation... If you haven’t given your Christmas shopping much thought as yet, do not despair. Whether you want to treat yourself, your friends, family or even your home, we’ve got it covered. There are local businesses just waiting to help you with all of your preparations, go on give them a try... I would like to invite you to nominate your favourite local charity to become our charity of the year 2018. I’ll be drawing up a shortlist for voting during December. Whichever charity or community interest company receives the most Facebook “likes” will receive £100 in lieu of sending out Christmas cards and of course, they will benefit from a years worth of promotion within the magazine and all the benefits that that brings. Please do get in touch; I really want to support the charities that are closest to YOUR hearts.

Pub & café Walks
Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
SNOW IN STANSTED A windmill, a wooded nature reserve with lakes, and some great pubs and cafés make Stansted a great place to stroll. With your back to the railway station, turn left along Water Lane, parallel with railway. At the end, turn right uphill to find the windmill. From mill, turn right and fork left, along Recreation Ground, then right again down Chapel Road back towards station. Turn left onto Lower Street and keep straight. Fork right past Dog and Duck pub. Keep on along wooded lane and straight on fenced path beyond. Follow path on around left hand edge of field. Turn left at arrow and follow path in this direction to reach lane eventually. Turn right on lane. When lane veers left, keep straight on track to find entrance for Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve. Go right through gate and follow path as it leads right past ponds, keeping water on your right. This lovely wood was once the landscaped park of a grand house nearby. Follow path out of nature reserve at far end and continue in same direction, eventually heading back around edge of field to return to Stansted Mountfichet. LOCATION:

All Things PC
Name and Business: Mark Rowley and my business is All Things PC. Where do you live? I was born and bred in Harlow and lived there for 38 years but for the past 2 years I’ve lived in Bishop’s Stortford. What’s your favourite shop? The Works. For a bookworm like me, it’s like an Aladdin’s cave. Also, as I’m the cook at home I can find so many good recipe books there. What’s your favourite Venue? My partner and I really enjoy going to the South Street Pantry as the choice and quality of food there is excellent. Skew is also a very nice restaurant and we go there when we feel we deserve a treat. What do you like best about Stortford? There’s a really good choice of eateries in the town and the steep hills are great for burning off the extra calories when walking home.

What do you like doing when you’re not working? Spending time with my family and watching football. My job is my hobby also, so I do a lot of tinkering about with home computers. I set up my business because... I wanted to be my own boss and actually make a living from my hobby, which involves building/fixing computers. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? Our 3 children all recently received great school reports. My daughter has even been told she can sit her English GCSE a year early. What’s your favourite one liner? “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

holy trinity church
Winter Night shelter
Jesus once said: ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Holy Trinity church, with Churches Together, last year provided for those who found themselves homeless in Bishop’s Stortford during the winter. Provision included: • a warm welcome, • hot meals, • washing facilities, • and a safe bed. Following a successful experience for guests and volunteers the night shelter will re-open December-March in Holy Trinity church hall. But we need your help to provide a peaceful and restful night to those who need it! This winter could you: • help to feed, • welcome, • befriend, • protect and support those who need to access the hall? If you feel you would like to volunteer then please contact us.
Get informed about homelessness We are all familiar with images of people sleeping on the streets, but may not be aware that many others are the hidden homeless; sleeping on sofas or floors of friends or family. Unfortunately in larger towns and cities this is now a common occurrence. In the middle class suburbs of Bishop’s Stortford and East Hertfordshire the problem is growing and in their daily lives most people might not stop to think how this person actually got to be homeless. Being homeless means a lot more than not having a roof over your head. Our experience at the HTWNS has taught us that homelessness is also characterised by the following: • Being separated from your family, friends and other people who care about you; • Loosening the connections with the home, community, society e.g your church, mosque, social network. • Perception of not having access to basic human rights like water and medical treatment; • Losing your sense of dignity and selfrespect.

lights of love
This festive season Isabel Hospice are warmly inviting local people to celebrate the life of someone special and make a dedication in their memory at one of their 8 Lights of Love remembrance ceremonies. Each ceremony has a Christmas tree adorned with bright lights, which are symbolic of the lives that will be celebrated. Following the service of remembrance and carol singing, the ceremony will end with the switching on of the lights. Laura Pigott, Community Fundraiser for the Hospice said “There is no cost to attend Lights of Love but as a small charity, Isabel Hospice rely on the generosity and goodwill of our local community to help us bring light and hope to families dealing with terminal illness.”
Richard Bellerby (58) attended the Isabel Hospice Living Well sessions in Thorley, Bishop’s Stortford. Following his death in May 2016, his wife Katy and her children Florence (12) and Felix (10) attended the Hospice’s Lights of Love ceremony in Bishop’s Stortford.

Katy said “Richard was very sceptical about attending the Isabel Living Well sessions at the Barnabas Centre in Thorley, but with a bit of gentle persuasion he went along. Over the course of a few weeks he settled into a Thursday routine. If he was feeling poorly and couldn’t attend you could really notice a dip in his mood. I usually stayed for a coffee, initially just to make sure Richard was OK, but after a while I too was looking forward to Thursdays and the group jigsaw puzzle! “I could see Richard was really benefiting from attending – the nurses, the exercise group, complimentary therapists, the art group, the other patients and the wonderful volunteers. “Some weeks Richard was very tired but he was happy just to sit and drink tea and eat some lovely homemade cake. Richard loved art and painted a beautiful picture of a Tibetan temple adorned with prayer flags with the help of some very talented artists. He also started on a childhood memory of a day at the horse races which sadly he was unable to finish. Richard became very poorly very quickly, one week we were at Isabel sessions and the next week he was in St Clare’s Hospice and wasn’t coming home. Sadly Richard died very shortly afterwards. “I was drawn back to the Isabel sessions at the Barnabas Centre and decided to put on a brave face and visit everyone - I was welcomed like

Hospice an old friend. Our 2 children Florence and Felix loved to hear what their daddy had been up to on Thursdays so I decided to take the children on a visit too. Everyone loved seeing the children, and knew all about them from Richard - they have now visited several times. Another visitor who came with me was our new puppy Woody Banjo who has now been to the Barnabas Centre on a few occasions. We hope to train her as a pet therapy dog over the coming months as she has started to calm down! Richard was happy a few days before attending Isabel Hospice on a Thursday in anticipation of going and he was happy whilst he was there, and happy a few days afterwards. The Isabel sessions gave Richard a reason for keeping going and we all have some wonderful memories of his time at the hospice. We were very fortunate to have the artwork of the horse race
finished by some of the volunteers. It is a lasting memory of Richard for me and the children. It sounds like a cliché but I don’t know what we would have done without Isabel Hospice. “ You can make a dedication to enable Isabel Hospice to carry on caring for local people at www.isabelhospice.org.uk/bookoflove or by calling Fundraising on 01707 382500.

Our chosen charity Art Project Words by Keiren Mitchell, Housing & Welfare Project Coordinator
The Streets2Homes art project has been running since 2014 to support the confidence, wellbeing and motivation of the people with work with. This invaluable project provides our homeless centre users with a space for reflection and expression as well allowing them to enjoy the health benefits of relieving stress, increasing brain function, improving their mood and cultivating healthy social lives in a fun and safe environment. The project was first developed in conjunction with the Harlow Recreation Fund through Essex Community Foundation. In 2016, we were fortunate enough to secure funding from the Sebright Trust to run the project up to 1st November 2017. This year we were bequeathed funds from a generous supporter which will allow us to continue with this project until April 2018, when we will seek further funding to continue. Over the last year, the Streets2Homes art project has seen many service users through its doors exploring their creativity; we expected 20 clients to attend our workshops initially, but that figure has more than doubled – this is great news as we now have enough artwork to arrange an exhibition for the local community and the artists themselves to enjoy! There really is something for everybody; whether it’s painting, sketching or crafts, clay modelling or soap carving, there is an artist in all of us we just have to find it. One service user said; “It has really helped me mentally and changed my outlook on life.”

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
LOOK WHAT’S COOKING SALMON & MONKFISH FILO WREATH Sunflower oil, for greasing 100g butter, melted 270g pack filo pastry, thawed if frozen 450g salmon fillet, skinned and diced 450g monkfish fillet, skinned and diced 225g cooked peeled tiger prawns 2 tbsp lemon juice
This
3 tbsp chopped fresh dill Salt and freshly ground black pepper Lemon wedges and dill sprigs, to garnish
festive wreath makes a great alternative to traditional roast turkey and can be prepared in advance the night before.
1. Use the sunflower oil to grease a 1.2 litre capacity ring mould, then line the mould with cling film. 2. Brush the sheets of pastry one by one with melted butter and use nearly all of them to line the ring mould. Overlap the pastry sheets slightly as you go and repeat the layers 3-4 times. Leave the excess pastry to drape over the side of the mould. 3. Mix the salmon, monkfish and prawns in a large bowl and stir in the lemon juice and chopped dill. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Spoon the fish mixture into the pastry-lined mould, pressing down gently. Fold the excess pastry in over the filling and top with more buttered sheets of pastry, cutting them to fit and completely cover the filling. Stamp small star shapes out of any remaining sheets of buttered pastry and place on a plate. 5. Cover the ring mould and the plate with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour (or overnight). Carefully invert the ring mould onto a large baking sheet and then remove the mould and the cling film. Re-melt any remaining butter and brush all over the pastry. 6. Bake in a preheated oven at 190C/fan 170C/Gas Mark 5 for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Bake the pastry stars on a separate baking sheet for 5 minutes until golden. 7. Allow the wreath to stand for 5 minutes then transfer to a serving platter and decorate with the pastry stars. Garnish with lemon wedges and dill sprigs.
TIP: Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so simply cut to fit. Don’t worry if they tear, just place another piece of buttered pastry on top to cover the tear.

policing our local community
protect yourself and your loved ones from phone scammers Police in Hertfordshire are urging people to be on their guard against phone scams following a number of recent incidents. Several different methods have been used by fraudsters to try and con victims out of cash. A 53-year-old woman from the Buntingford area was contacted by a woman who claimed to be from BT and persuaded the victim they had viruses on their computer. The victim was then transferred to a ‘security expert’ who accessed her computer remotely. The offender then became threatening and told the victim to go to Tesco and purchase £5,000 worth of iTunes vouchers. Fortunately, officers intervened and no purchase was made. An 87-year-old man from Markyate was contacted and told that he owed £500 to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The victim was persuaded to purchase £500 worth of iTunes vouchers as payment and read the codes over the phone to the offender. Similarly, a 65-year-old man from Stevenage was contacted by a man claiming to be from HMRC who stated the victim owed taxes. Again, the victim was instructed to purchase iTunes vouchers from several outlets and read the codes over the phone. He was also persuaded to transfer money over to a Bitcoin account. Overall, he lost £11,500 to the fraudsters. Reports of ‘more traditional’ phone scam offences have also been received in Hertsmere whereby offenders call victims and claim to be police officers investigating fraudulent activity on
their bank accounts. They then ask the victims to hand cash or bank cards over to a courier as part of a fictitious investigation. No money was lost on these occasions. Detective Sergeant Jon Leak, who leads Hertfordshire Constabulary’s specialist phone scam investigation team, said: “We continue to do everything we can to bring offenders to justice. A number of convictions have already been secured but, unfortunately, these scams are still occurring with a variety of methods now being used. “Thankfully, many people recognise them for what they are and refuse to part with any money however, there are occasions when people fall prey to the highly persuasive nature of these fraudsters and often lose thousands of pounds. “I want to reiterate that you will never be asked under any circumstances, by police, banks or HMRC, to purchase iTunes vouchers as payment. Similarly, police and banks would never ask for your PIN or for you to hand cash and bank cards over to a courier. “If you are suspicious of a call you receive, please hang up and report it to police. Remember to wait at least five minutes to ensure you aren’t reconnected to the offender.” He added: “Please also share this advice with older relatives, friends and neighbours to help prevent them from becoming victims.” If you think you may have been a victim of a phone scam, please report it to police on the non-emergency number 101.

We welcome groups and individuals who share our vision to join us. If you can spare a couple of hours (or even one) why not get involved? Your help will really make a difference.

Because she’ll never
be so small again...
Now your beautiful baby is finally here; she’s been growing inside you and will continue to grow through the love and care you give her, day by day. Capture those first bonding days forever From the very first day your baby arrived, she’s changing already. Together we can capture those early days, so you can always look back and cherish those special bonding moments. Looking forward, but too late to look back Your focus now in motherhood is nurturing your baby; every day will be planned for the next milestone and you’ll watch her grow quickly. Baby days will rapidly become toddler days; a hazy memory. Grab this amazing opportunity You’ll never get another chance to photograph your baby at this stage of her young life again. Plan ahead for these special moments and together we’ll create natural and timeless photographic memories. One of the most important appointments of your lives Just as you would make appointments for baby weighs or vaccines, make this all-important studio appointment whilst you’re still pregnant to ensure you preserve your early days of motherhood in art.

Take Extra Care of Your Pets this Christmas All the trimmings and paraphernalia of Christmas are wonderful for us, but they can represent a danger to your pet. So with this in mind, what in particular do you need to watch out for at this time of year? Christmas decorations If your pet has a tendency to chew, be wary of your Christmas tree lights as they may cause electrocution. Glass baubles also break very easily and it’s difficult to spot the smaller shards of glass, which
