WELCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe February/March edition of THE CM23 CONNECTION For the first time I didn’t set myself ANY New Year resolutions and I have to say, it feels pretty good! I am, however on a mission to get some work/life balance and I have so far just about booked myself on every “thing” with “everyone” possible. I’ve gone a bit manic on this front actually and probably tipped the scales firmly in the other direction. It’s slowly dawning on me that I am perhaps an “all or nothing” kinda gal. It is nice though, having lots of things planned with my family and friends. I thoroughly recommend it. Now I’ve just got to find some time for work... got any ideas? Actually I have been quite busy on the work front too - this edition is the proof! It has been great fun putting the magazine together and I do hope you enjoy it - lots of information on locals groups and organisations and dare I say it, lots that may help you enjoy a greater work/life balance! Before I finish, I wanted to thank those of you that took the time to contact me about the new bi-monthly distribution. It was lovely to hear how much you enjoy the magazine and showed just how much you care about it, and for that, I am very grateful. Until next time,
Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...
THRIPLOW DAFFODILS Every spring the little village of Thriplow, seven miles south of Cambridge, has a Daffodil Weekend to raise money for charity. In 2016, the festival will be in April (thriplowdaffodils.org.uk), but you can walk this circuit any time, admire the budding flowers along the route and support Thriplow’s friendly, community-run pub. Turn right out of the Green Man along Lower Street. After about 150m, turn left just before Yew Tree Cottage along a footpath leading to Middle Street, turn right along this road and left again along another footpath, leading past fields to Church Street. Turn right along the road and then left onto a track at the corner, just beyond Paddock House, following signs towards Heathfield. Follow this track left again, just before buildings, and then take footpath right and left around a wood and finally left again through trees. Turn right past a pond with the water on your right and then left along an ancient track known as “The Drift” that leads to Church Street. Turn right and follow the road, forking left near the school to return to the pub. LOCATION:

local business people in person Name and Business Norma Fenwick, Your Perfect Travel Ltd.
Where do you live? I grew up in Harlow and moved to Sawbridgeworth about 10 years ago now. I love living and working in Sawbridgeworth. What’s your favourite local venue? Baroosh. Nice place to meet with friends and colleagues. What’s your favourite local shop? White Stuff for their unusual clothes & accessories. What do you like best about Stortford? It’s lovely little boutique shops. What do you like doing when you’re not working? Travel to new destinations (my favourite hobby), play the piano, read and now keep fit. I’ve joined
S2 Fitness (formerly Stanley Fitness) a couple of months ago and I’m loving every minute of it. I set up my business because... I love to travel and I wanted to help other people plan their travel and use my experience and knowledge. It also means I get to travel a whole lot more to check out destinations and resorts. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I got engaged on 3rd January. My now fiancé Andrew proposed to me on a recent holiday to Myanmar (Burma). What’s the funniest thing you’ve overheard? ‘Isn’t the Grand Canyon located on top of a mountain?’

Live music every week bishop’s stortford acoustic club Since Keef Jackman and Drew Bonnington founded Bishops Stortford Acoustic Club in 2002, there has been an enormous change in live music, not only in Bishops Stortford and the surrounding area but generally over the whole country. Places that would never have thought of having an acoustic evening are springing up all around. There has never been a better opportunity for anyone to find live music on most nights of the week. The only real constant in all of these welcome changes is the Bishops Stortford Acoustic Club. These changes are great for listeners to and players of music. It matters not if the music is an original song, a modern cover, a classic, a blues or country or whatever. Live music is why the players practice and perform in the hope that the listeners like it.
So, what is the format? Acoustic Club is held in the Long Room at the Half Moon pub every Thursday night. We generally have 8 x 10 minute slots with a 30 minute Showcase at the end. Doors open at 8.30pm, music starts at 9pm and the Showcase begins at 10.30pm. It is £5 admission for listeners and £2 for players. If you wish to see what is on each week, please get on our distribution list by sending your email address to: acousticclubstortford@gmail.com If you wish to book a 10 minute two song slot to play and/or sing, please contact Acoustic Club via our email: acousticclubstortford@gmail.com Please support Bishops Stortford Acoustic Club. We look forward to seeing you and welcoming you.
Bishop’s Stortford Acoustic Club is different in two major respects. The first is the venue. The Long Room at The Half Moon pub in North Street has few rivals, with its combination of accessible location, easy parking, stage/PA set up and ambience. The second is that Acoustic Club is there every week on a Thursday. We have a tradition of promoting every genre of Acoustic Music with new and established players, seasoned veterans and youngsters making their first appearances. All are welcome and listened to and this will not change. We also like to Showcase the very best. In the past many players have appeared at our club and gone on to greater things: Sam Smith, Matt Cardle, George Ezra, Charlie XCX, Eric Roache, Jon Gomm to name but a few!! email: acousticclubstortford@gmail.com Web: www.facebook.com/hertfordacousticclub

Grove cottage the home of celebrating 50 years in 2016 Grove Cottage, the home of Bishop’s Stortford Mencap is proud to celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2016.
grow our existing clubs and develop much needed life skills opportunities for adults and children with learning disability.
Grove Cottage was set up in 1966 by a small group of families to who didn’t have anywhere for their children to go. They felt alienated and got together and started a support group which has evolved over the last 50 years to Grove Cottage as we know it today.
To achieve our dreams costs money and we could not continue without the support of the local community.
Kevin Davis, Trustee at Grove Cottage said: “We are so proud to have reached this incredible milestone at Grove Cottage and it would not have been possible without the fantastic support of the local community. We would like to invite everyone who has been involved with Grove Cottage over the last 50 years to get in touch and come and join us in our celebrations during 2016. At Grove Cottage we face three key challenges: Awareness: Although we have been around for 50 years many people don’t know about us and we need to continue working with the local community to raise awareness
We look forward to welcoming old and new members, families, staff, volunteers and supporters of Grove Cottage to celebrate with us in 2016. Without all of you our success and celebrations this year would not have been possible.” Grove Cottage provides social and educational activities for people of all ages with learning disabilities. They run a Special Needs Nursery, Performing Arts Clubs, Youth Clubs, Adult Social Clubs, Get Active Clubs, Saturday and School Holiday Clubs, a Stay and Play Toddler Group, a Speech & Language service and take adult members away on residential breaks and have very exciting plans for the future.
Volunteers: Grove Cottage could not run without Volunteers. If you have time and skills to offer – we will put them to good use! Funding: It costs over £250,000 to run Grove Cottage each year and we could not exist without the support of the local community. Although we are linked to Mencap we receive no funding from them. Despite our challenges, the future looks very exciting for Grove Cottage. We are bursting at the seams at 151 London Road, Bishop’s Stortford. We are looking for a building to renovate or a plot of land to build on to enable us to

To run all these clubs costs over £250,000 pa and Grove Cottage could not exist without the support of the local community as they receive no central funding from Mencap. Natalie Trapmore, fundraising at Grove Cottage said: “We want to have a year of celebrations with the Bishop’s Stortford community. We have lots of exciting activities planned. We have Quiz nights, Comedy nights, Pampering events, Uncle Funk events, Golf Days, Choral extravaganzas, a 50th Anniversary Ball and much, much more. Maybe you are also celebrating something special this year? Over the last 50 years, many people have asked their friends and family to consider an alternative way of celebrating by making a donation to Grove Cottage rather than buying them presents. This is an incredibly generous act and helps make a real difference to our members. We would like to invite everyone who may also be celebrating in 2016 to consider supporting Grove Cottage; you may be having your Golden Wedding Anniversary, 50th Birthday, Wedding or any other memorable event. If you are interested in doing this you could set up a ‘Just Giving’ page or ask for a Grove Cottage Gift card or a donation to be made instead.
Supporting people of all ages with learning disability. One new initiative we are very excited about is the launch of our NEW Grove Cottage Gift Card that you can purchase in support of Grove Cottage. It’s a great way to give a life changing gift to your friends and family and make a real difference to local people with learning disabilities. Gift cards are now available in £10, £20 and £50 denominations and are available online at www.mencapgrovecottage.org. Please help to share smiles at Grove Cottage during their 50th anniversary year and give a Grove Cottage gift card to someone you know. We look forward to celebrating with everyone in Bishop’s Stortford. Thank you all so much for your continued support - you make a real difference.” To find out more about how to support Grove Cottage and to join in their 50th anniversary celebrations go to www.mencapgrovecottage.org or give them a Facebook LIKE on grovecottagebishopsstortfordmencap. 1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Place the meat and seasoned flour in a large plastic freezer bag. Seal the bag and shake well, until the meat is coated in the flour. 2. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and brown the meat in small batches, over a high heat. Add more oil if necessary. Transfer the meat to a large casserole dish. 3. Add the remaining oil to the pan and fry the onions for 5 minutes. Pour in the Guinness, stock and Worcestershire sauce and bring to the boil. Pour the liquid and onions over the meat and add the carrots, thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Cover and cook for about 3 hours until the meat is tender, stirring once. 4. To make the dumplings, place the flour, suet, horseradish and parsley in a large bowl. Season with half a teaspoon of salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper, then stir in enough cold water to mix to a soft dough. Using lightly floured hands, divide and shape into 8 dumplings. 5. Uncover the stew and gently sit the dumplings on top of the meat. Cover and cook for a further 20 minutes until the dumplings are fluffy and risen. Serve sprinkled with extra freshly ground black pepper. TIP: If you don’t want to serve this stew with dumplings, try topping with sliced potatoes instead. Arrange 3 large peeled and thinly sliced potatoes in concentric circles on top of the stew after 2 hours cooking time. Season well and dot with butter. Return to the oven, uncovered, and cook for a further 1- 1¼ hours until both meat and potatoes are tender.

Fancy a walk?
Bishop’s Stortford & District Footpaths Association By Daphne Wallace-Jarvis for BSDFA
Walks for February and March Weather... Sometimes rain is unavoidable, and in February please check out the weather forecast before you leave your house and dress appropriately. The Bishop’s Stortford and District Footpaths Assn. walk Leaders will try and take the best route in consideration of the circumstances on the day. However, there are times when there is no alternative other than having to splosh through the mud. The Essex Herts borders is an arable area with vast quantities of clay soil which in the wet will be sticky, slippery and heavy. It is not an area for climbing magnificent hills but yes, this clay together with its arable fields has some ‘good little bumps’ which when achieved on a good clear day, you can see for miles. February, in this part of England, can quite often display brilliant sunshine and the most beautiful deep blue skies. It is equally true that on a poor old misty day, some certain amount of imagination is required - the odd bird will still decide to sing; there can be the noise from road traffic; a church bell may toll.
And what next? Well it would be wishful thinking to imagine that the second half of a BSDFA Sunday walk is always downhill and back to the pub, but having said that, the steps along the return journey always seem to pass more swiftly. Arriving back at the start point, yes! You have just completed 5-6 miles - who else has achieved that today? Ramblers notes: Thorley footbridge (FP12) has been repaired; the Twyford Railway Crossing remains to be determined; Don’t forget to inform the Secretary of any other issues concerning our Rights of Way (ROW). At the half-way point, it’s great to stop and rummage for a coffee, soak up the fresh air and watch the spirals of warm breath willowing from the group as little puffs stream into a crisp morning air. It is grand to stand and stare, to be warm, care-free and know that the half-way point has been achieved.
