localpeople A Reason for Running Words and portrait photograph by John Allen

How much motivation would you require to run the London Marathon? If you asked local man Gary O’Donnell, he would probably tell you he has all the motivation he needs. Nearly two years ago his wife Nikki was diagnosed with Pompe, a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. I went to meet Gary, Nikki and Tommy, their son, and to talk to them about the disease, how it has impacted on their life – and Gary’s preparations for the Marathon.

Let’s start by saying that I, like lots of people, know nothing about Muscular Dystrophy – or Pompe. Nikki: Pompe is one form of muscular Dystrophy. It affects every muscle in my body – my legs, my heart, my lungs – every muscle. My body has a deficiency of a certain Enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of Glycogen inside the muscle cells. After a time the Glycogen actually starts to kill the muscle off. For a person to develop the disease, both of their parents must have that defective gene, a 1 in 40,000 possibility. I have a brother and although he is a carrier, he’s fine. As is his son. But Tommy, our

8

eleven-year-old son, is also carrier, although he will never develop the symptoms, because Gary does not have the defective gene. But if Tommy married someone who did have the defective gene there would be a chance that any child of theirs might develop the disease.

the home I am still able to do the housework, shop and cook. Tommy and Gary have both been fantastic and really supportive. I can’t do everything that I see other mums doing, but Tommy and I, we do our own things together like going to the cinema.

Nikki, it must have been awful news to be told that you had Pompe. Nikki: It was in a way, but I knew something was wrong. I’ve had problems from my early twenties, but over the last few years I’ve not felt right - very tired and no energy; a bit wobbly sometimes and I didn’t feel sturdy on my feet.

Tommy: But then I can do all the active stuff with Dad.

I also got to the stage where I was looking at old videos of myself and thinking, I don’t walk the same way anymore. And I was finding it harder just to get out of a chair. In October 2008 I went to the doctor and I have to say, the NHS, the doctors and the consultants were fantastic. I went to PAH in Harlow where they did some tests. I was referred to Barts in London where they did lots more tests including a muscle biopsy from my thigh. Eventually, in April 2009 they told me that I had Pompe - a form of Muscular Dystrophy. How does this affect your day-today life? Nikki: When I was diagnosed the line that followed was ‘there is no cure’. But there is a treatment that will slow the progression down. I have to have an infusion of a drug called Myozyme every two weeks for the rest of my life. It’s a replacement Enzyme. Without that I would probably be in a wheelchair. Physically I have very weak legs and can’t walk very far. But around

To advertise call 01279 410345

Nikki: I go to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge every six months for lung function checks, occupational therapy, speech therapy and nutritional advice. But I have the infusions at home now. A nurse comes in and sets up the infusion through an intravenous drip. It takes up to four hours. I also belong to a Pompe network where I can communicate with people all over the world – over the Internet and by email. But then I read other stories about people who have got other illnesses and I think, you know what, it could be worse. Gary: Nikki surprised me in the way that she reacted so positively. She’s a fantastic wife and mother, we want for nothing here: she’s a keen cook and the place is never untidy. She could quite easily have rolled up in a ball and started to feel sorry for herself. We do much more as a family now. Tommy: The active things that Mum said, I can do that with Dad. But Mum and I go to the cinema and go up to the town. Right at the beginning when she first told me, it did effect me, the thought that she was disabled but now that has gone. I know how it is and why it is there. If we are out and people stare at her, I do sometimes say,

what are you looking at. I am quite protective of her.

sixteen miles and I’m really getting into it.

Nikki: In fact, I have problem with being classed as disabled. I have got a blue badge although I don’t always use it. Because I don’t feel like I fit in with what a disabled person is, if that makes sense.

The money that you raise for the charity, how is that used? Gary: In various ways. First of all it helps to run the charity itself; they have full-time people working for them. But the money also goes towards financing research and drug trials. It also provides care for those people with the disease, ways to improve those people’s way of life, to make their lives as normal as possible be it through treatment, rehabilitation or financial assistance.

Tommy: But just because you’re not in a wheelchair, doesn’t mean you’re not classed as disabled. If you’re disabled, then you’re disabled. It doesn’t matter in what way you are disabled. So, Gary, why the Marathon? Gary: I’ve always been reasonably active with football and everything else. And although I’ve always wanted to do the Marathon it was always one of those things that I never got around to doing. Now I have a reason. And I think it’s the only way to understand what Nikki is feeling in her legs. And I think I might be feeling some of that at the moment by doing two-and-ahalf hour runs to Epping and back.

And although I am running for the much larger Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, some of the money they raise will filter down to the Pompe charity.

At the beginning I wanted to run for the Pompe charity, but that charity is quite small and is not able to provide places, and I didn’t win one of the free ballot places. So I wrote to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and told them about Nikki and that I wanted to run on their behalf. And they said, yes. Now I just have to raise £1,500. I have a “Just-Giving” page but we are also holding a Charity Ladies Night at the Maypole Social Club on 25th March. A number of guys will get auctioned off for the evening – all in good taste, of course.

The Pompe website is at www. pompe.org.uk and you can find out about Muscular Dystrophy and the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign at www.muscular-dystrophy.org

And how’s the preparation for the race? Gary: The Marathon is on 17th April and I’m going for a four-hour time. At the moment I’m running for about

Nikki, Gary and Tommy, thanks for talking to me so openly – and positively. And Gary, good luck in the London Marathon. Some additional information.

Gary’s ‘Just-Giving’ page is at www.justgiving.com/ GaryO and if you would like tickets for the Ladies Night in March, send an e-mail to ladiesnight2@ hotmail.co.uk Business owners, if you would like to donate a prize to the Ladies Night Raffle and obtain free advertising on the night, please email: ladiesnight2@hotmail.co.uk

“Sticking to New Years resolutions are easy, if you stick with us!” Sticking to New Years resolutions are easy, if you stick with us!! Our ethos is simple… “Get out your comfort zone, give 100% and the results will follow” Since 2008 Stanley4fitness have been running Boot camps and Personal training courses in Harlow and surrounding areas. The company has gone from strength to strength with currently around 100 members signed up to the New Year Boot camp. This together with the introduction of the Tenerife Boot camp and kids Boot camps it has been a busy twelve months for the team. Gary, owner and lead Instructor is relishing the challenge that the future brings. Gary from Harlow and former Mark Hall school pupil gained sporting honours in Rugby and Athletics before studying for his Sport science degree at Wolverhampton University. Since leaving University in 1998 Gary had a successful career in the fitness industry before setting up Stanley4fitness. The vision was simple; group training that gives people a clear vision of what they need to achieve their goals. Gary was frustrated with the Gym culture and the lack of results it

brings. The problem with Gyms is that unless you pay around £30 per hour for a Personal trainer, you will quickly lose motivation after around 4 weeks of joining. This together with the fact you are tied in to a twelve month contract and aren’t given clear goals or marker from which to progress your training or fitness programme. Why we are different We offer a six week course that is designed to educate, motivate and support you to your fitness goals. We are on hand to listen, help and then challenge you throughout every session!! The sessions are a mix of Bodyweight, Kettlebell, Boxing, core and cardio training. We begin and end every six week course with fitness assessment and rep challenge. Based on the results over the past 2 years, all participants that completed the six week course lost inches, increased lean muscle, lost weight and improved their overall well-being. The course and exercises are designed so that all fitness levels can work with us. We are also able to offer nutritional programmes, sports massage and Ante and postnatal courses.

As part of the Boot camp we also offer the “Padbox” class on Fridays. Padbox is a class that teaches all the skills and techniques of Boxing without being hit. It improves cardiovascular fitness, strength, coordination and reflex reaction. Our next camp starts Sunday 6th March, please contact us to book your place. Tenerife Boot camp Gary and the team have just returned from the new Tenerife boot camp. Stanley4fitness teamed up with TKO gym in Tenerife for four days of training, nutritious food and glorious sunshine. The camp was a fitness and weight loss course designed for all fitness levels. Each day was structured with a mix of sessions including Beach circuits, Padbox sessions, core conditioning, cardio and of course the famous high altitude run up Mount Teide. The camp was a huge success with some of the participants already booked onto the next camp in May. S4F are now taking booking for this camp.

For more information on our services and to book your place on the Easter boot camp please e-mail the team at info@stanley4fitness.com text ‘call back’ with your name to 07545 314416 or call 01279 424471

Locals that Launch You may have already seen the mobile catering van driving around Harlow - lets face it who could miss “Sweeny Todds Pie & Mash”. Church Langley resident Matthew Neale tells us a little about his new business and why he’s bringing a little of the East End to Harlow. When did you set up the business? The business was initially set up in November 2010 but I took over on 2nd February 2011. How did you decide on the company name? I hope the name is self explanatory, it’s a tongue in cheek reference to the infamous Demon Barber of Fleet Street; Sweeny Todd, whose murdered customers who were made into “tasty” pies by Mrs Lovett. We wanted a name that would grab people’s attention... Experience in the business? I grew up in the East End and have great memories of eating pie & mash. At the time there were dozens of Pie & Mash Shops but sadly many have now closed. What work did you do before setting up the business? I’ve spent the last twenty years as a jeweller or “mounter” as it’s known in the trade. So, apart from eating it as a child, Pie ’n’ Mash is something completely new for me. What made you decide to set up your own business? An opportunity arose to buy the business. I did a lot of research and found that there wasn’t a traditional Pie & Mash establishment for miles around especially one with the quality product that we have. I also found that many local people are descended from East Enders and even today we have a lot of people moving into the area from London. What has been the most valuable lesson learnt so far? That everyone who eats Pie ‘n’ Mash is a connoisseur of it, so it has to be spot on. It has to be authentic. What hurdles have you faced? It’s still early days but is has been a challenge marketing the business - letting people know where we are, what we offer and just how good we are.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating they say, or in our case the pie! What has been the most rewarding aspect? When someone tries our food for the first time and tell us how much they have enjoyed it. We’ve had nothing but positive feedback so far, which has been really satisfying. I can recommend our homemade steak ‘n’ kidney and chicken and mushroom pies they’re unbelievably good! Do you hope to expand your business? Ultimately I would like to have a shop but with rent and rates so high our mobile kitchen is the best option for us at the moment. Being mobile means that we can literally take the business anywhere, which gives us great flexibility. How should potential customers contact you? Either by phone 07817 439209 or visit the website www.sweenytoddspienmash.com to find out where we are and when, and of course to look at our menu. Anything else you’d like to add? We are primarily based at the Market Square in the Town Centre all week except Wednesdays and Sundays. On a Wednesday we can be found on Edinburgh Way (opposite Kwick Fit). On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11.30 am to 8pm we offer a home delivery service. So, even if it’s raining and you can’t come to us, we can always come to you! We also cater for special events and occasions, let us bring a touch of East End nostalgia to you. Sweeney Todds Pie & Mash is local, authentic and with prices starting from £4.15 our prices are a snip! FENWICKESTATES Top Tips To Sell By Norma Fenwick Hi CM17 readers Every seller wants their home to sell fast and bring top dollar. Does that sound good to you? Well, it’s not luck that makes that happen. It’s careful planning and knowing how to professionally spruce up your home that will send home buyers scurrying for their cheque books. It is a buyers’ market at the moment and buyers generally decide to buy on the ‘feel good factor’. So, to give your potential buyers the feel good factor and get your home to stand out from the rest, consider following these simple rules: 1.

Disassociate Yourself With Your Home – You are about to sell your greatest asset.

2.

De-Personalize – You want buyers to say “I can see myself living here”.

3.

De-Clutter - Clear shelves, bookcases, ornaments, excess amount of plants. Create space.

4.

Rearrange Bedroom Cupboards and Kitchen Cabinets – buyers love to snoop. Show them how much space is available in all cupboards and closets.

5.

Rent a Storage Unit – Remove pieces of furniture that block or hamper paths and walkways and put them into storage.

6.

Hire Furniture – If a room is empty, hire furniture to show the buyer the potential of the room.

7.

Make Minor Repairs - Fix leaky taps, remove limescale, consider painting walls in neutral colours, replace burned out light bulbs.

8.

Make the House Sparkle – Time for a Spring Clean and make the house look like a show home.

9.

Scrutinize – Is your house welcoming? How will it look to a buyer?

10.

Check Curb Appeal – If a buyer won’t get out of their car because they do not like the exterior, you’ll never get them inside. Check that the outside is as de-cluttered and tidy as the inside.

These are just some of the many ways that you can make your home more appealing to your potential buyers. Fenwick Estates will give you help and support to prepare your home ready for sale and help you sell. To receive a copy of our step-by-step guide “Preparing Your Home For Sale”, fill in the coupon below and return to Fenwick Estates, Allen House, The Maltings, Sawbridgeworth CM21 9JX or email your details to info@fenwickestates.co.uk. You will also get the chance to win £50 worth of M&S vouchers - will you spend them sprucing up your current home or save them for your new home? In the meantime, I am happy to discuss how to market your property effectively to achieve the quickest possible sale at the highest possible price. Do call or email anytime for free advice and support. Happy selling! Norma

STOP the GILDEN WAY DEVELOPMENT (SGWD) Would you like to see views like this replaced with 1200 new houses? Under the guidance of the Harlow Civic Society, an action group has been formed to fight this development on the grounds that it will destroy a valuable piece of farmland and area of natural beauty, regularly enjoyed by the local community. In a recent survey, conducted in the local area 99.99% of residents expressed their opposition to the building of 1200 houses on farmland north of Gilden Way, and so far over 3000 individuals have signed a petition against it. We would like you to convert this overwhelming show of public opinion into an incontrovertible NO VOTE against this unwelcome development. We must make our elected representatives in parliament and local council understand that we, the local residents, hold them accountable for the preservation of this area.

We urge you to write to Robert Halfon MP and ALL of our local councillors, whether in office or candidates (when they are announced) seeking to gain election in the forthcoming May district elections, to emphasise this point. To assist you, there are model letters available on the campaign website: www.stopgildenwaydevelopment.co.uk You can simply print them off, sign them and post them to the individuals identified on the same website, or if you prefer, compose your own letter. Every single letter counts so we urge you to show your continued support for the campaign. It is only through your actions will we succeed. Celebration

Here are our favourite celebration photographs as sent in by you. We were thrilled at just how diverse the images are - celebration really does mean something different to all of us. Our overall winner was an entry from Nick Patchcott - we just loved the clarity of the picture, you really can’t take your eyes off of little Isabella and you can’t help but smile with her! The diversity of all the pictures is great, with each one holding your attention for differing reasons - recognition of a place or people and the intricacies of the subject. Well done everyone and thank you for sending your photographs in.

policingourcommunity Old Harlow & Newhall PCSO Chrisie Goodman Spring is here at last! Last month there were problems relating to parking at all of the schools that I cover in the Old Harlow area including Churchgate Street. I am hoping that with the better weather that more parents and children will be walking to school or taking part in the walking bus scheme. Parents taking their children to Fawbert and Barnard School are advised that the car park at Wayre Street is free for the first hour and has plenty of space for parking. Residents of Chippingfield, East Park and Watlington Road/ The Oxleys have been experiencing problems with vehicles parking across their drives and drop kerbs and even leaving their vehicles unattended with small children in them! Please park with consideration for the residents. If possible try and get together and organise a lift share thereby saving on petrol costs as well. I see so many large people carriers and 4 x 4’s with just one child in them it seems such a waste. Before parking first think whether you

are causing an obstruction either to other vehicles or pedestrians or breaking any rules and regulations of the Highway Code. Mark Hall School parents can use the Mark Hall Sports Centre car park or another healthy option would be for pupils to start cycling into school. I shall endeavour when possible to be outside one of the 5 schools in Old Harlow so hope to meet many more of you over the next month. Surgery Dates: Monday 14th March 10-12 noon Old Harlow Baptist Church Hall, Saturday 19th March 10:30-12noon at Old Harlow Library, High Street and Friday 25th March at the Surestart Childrens Centre, Garden Terrace Road. Potter Street PCSO Jason Hardy & PCSO Rebecca Durrant The A414 roadworks continue to cause us all travel problems but hopefully within the next few weeks work will be complete. Unfortunately we are still experiencing traffic problems in Potter Street and there have been several near misses on the pedestrian crossing by the Red Lion PH, particularly for our School’s Crossing Lady. Please be extra vigilant and remember that Potter Street is a 20MPH zone. And if you forget we now have flashing signs to remind! My colleagues and myself have been at the crossing and we have noticed many drivers using their mobile phones or not wearing seat belts. We have all seen the road safety adverts and know the consequence’s of being involved in an accident whilst not wearing a seat belt or being on your mobile phone whilst driving. Think before you decide to put yourself and others at risk.

On a positive note, crime continues to fall within the Ward and this is due, in part, to information and calls we receive from you! So please do keep calling if you see anything suspicious, it may well turn out to be nothing but we would rather be safe than sorry. Over the last month we have seen an increase in the number of animal related calls particularly horse’s. Please do call us if you see any horses wandering in roads or contact the Council on 01279 446655. Surgery Dates: Monday 7th March 10:00 - 12:00 at Potter Street Community Centre and every Tuesday 10:00 - 12:00 at Potter Street Baptist Church coffee morning. Church Langley PCSO Phyllis Chipchase At the recent neighbourhood forum at Henry Moore school I gave a brief presentation on Community Speed Watch and am still looking for volunteers. Community speed watch is a traffic monitoring scheme that is co-ordinated by the police but run and managed by volunteers in the community. There are numerous benefits to such schemes which include the chance to increase road safety, fewer fatalities and serious injury collisions, and an increase in road safety awareness. The aim of Community Speed Watch is to address the problem of either real or perceived speeding. Volunteers must be 18 years of age there is no upper age limit.

Full training will be given at the Police Station and this will take around 2-3 hours. The training is free. If you would like to take part please contact me details below.

Surgery Dates: Sunday 20th February 11:00 14:00 at Tesco, NAP meeting Mon 14th February 19:00 - 20:30 at the Potters Arms. Contact Details: 07969 130371 or 0300 333 4444 (Ext:20611) Email: phyllis.chipchase@essex.pnn. police.uk

DO YOU WANT

A REAL OPEN FIRE IN YOUR HOME?

BIO FIRES ARE THE ANSWER! FROM CREATIVE FLAME

No chimney or flue required Can be put on any wall in any room Amazing visual impact Add vibrant real-flame magic to your home!

You can utilise any of these areas • FLAT WALL • EXISTING FIREPLACE

• FALSE CHIMNEY BREAST • BLOCKED FLUE • REDUNDANT GRATE

Selected fires can be used outdoors to add that special touch to your patio or BBQ creating an inspiring atmosphere in which to relax or entertain.

How do they work? Our bio fireplaces are fuelled by our own branded BIO FUEL known in the trade as denatured alcohol or Ethanol. It burns cleanly, giving a beautiful real flame, produces no toxic fumes, no smoke, soot or mess plus all the heat is kept in the room and not lost up a chimney or flue. Bio Ethanol fireplaces are fuelled by BIO FUEL (denatured alcohol) which is derived completely from plants, produces no more emissions than human breath and gives you a naturally burning flame that looks like a gas fire. All our fireplaces are real open fires which can be put in any room on any wall – they don’t need a Flue or Chimney, they don’t need expensive professional installation and they don’t need a Gas or Electric supply!! How simple is that?

Our mobile showroom

Bio Ethanol fires produce real, rich yellow and orange flame adding some extra warmth to your room and giving you this magical atmosphere that only a real flame can create.

Interested?… if a Bio fire is the answer to your needs, please contact our friendly helpful team.

harlowchorus Nineteenth Century Child Prodigy Words by Mick Rumens

I find myself increasingly amazed by the life history of some of the composers whose works Harlow Chorus perform. Our March concert at St John’s, Epping offers a perfect example in Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, a German organist and composer born in Vaduz, Liechtenstein on 17 March 1839. When he was only seven years old he became organist at Vaduz Parish Church, and his first composition was performed the following year. At the tender age of twelve in 1851 he entered the Munich Conservatory, where he later became professor of piano and subsequently professor of composition. In 1877 Rheinberger obtained the rank of court conductor, a position which gave him responsibility for the music in the royal chapel, later being awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. A distinguished teacher, he numbered many Americans among his pupils and, when the present Conservatorium was founded in Munich, Rheinberger was appointed its professor of organ and composition, a post he was to hold until his death in November 1901. He was also given the title of ”Royal Professor”. Rheinberger was a prolific composer and among his religious works are twelve masses and the one being performed, his Mass in E flat Major, is for double chorus. His other works include several operas, symphonies, chamber music and choral works although he is primarily remembered almost exclusively for his elaborate and challenging organ compositions. I’m sure that our audience will find the Mass we are performing a superb and inspiring composition. Following this concert in Epping, our next is at All Saints Church, Hockerill, Bishops Stortford on Saturday 14th May entitled ALL THAT JAZZ and includes works by Bob Chilcott, Johnny Dankworth, Duke Ellington and George Shearing. A totally different ‘menu’ which promises a real modern surge to, hopefully, lead us all into a ‘long, hot, summer’. More of this in the next issue of CM17 Connection.

To Be or Not To Be? Year 6 bring Shakespeare’s Globe to Henry Moore! The Year 6 children at Henry Moore have spent part of their Autumn term studying the life and times of William Shakespeare. They have learned all about the Bard himself, whilst also reading and studying one of his most famous plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As part of this topic, they had to design and build a scale model of the original Globe theatre. The children researched the Globe and found out what it used to look like, what it would have been like to go a see a play there and, finally, why it burnt down and had to be rebuilt. They then began to build their own Globe models. This was a cross-curricular project, involving Maths, Art, History and D&T. They all made a fantastic job of their models and the finished articles were quite impressive. Here’s what the children had to say: “I found building the Globe difficult but I really enjoyed it! My favourite part was constructing the Globe, because it was fun cutting and measuring the shapes.” George “I loved making the Globe theatres as they were fun and interesting to design. My theatre was extremely huge and I could fit inside it! I learned how to make 3D shape nets out of cardboard, which was to do with Maths.” Lauren “I loved how just one project covered so many different subjects!” Charlie “The Globe included my three favourite subjects: art, D&T and Maths. I truly loved it!” Billy “Making our Globes was really fun. We spent lots of time studying about the Globe so it was great when we finally got to make it!” Cameron “I liked it best at the end, because you feel so proud because you made it yourself!” Jamie School website: www.henrymoore.essex.sch.uk Please mention The CM17 Connection when responding to adverts

Have you seen Oscar? In March last year we (my daughter and I) took in a little rescue kitten from the RSPCA. We named him Oscar, and he became a much loved addition to our household. Sadly he disappeared on the 9th/10th of January. He is not a wandering cat and was always in for his breakfast. We immediately alerted Petlog and have leafleted our neighbours (we live in Bentley Drive). Noone has seen him. He is neutered, has distinctive markings (from the top he looks mainly black, with white paws and a white splodge on his nose, but underneath he has white markings under his chin, on his chest and lower tummy). He was wearing a brown leather collar with silver studs with a bell and a name tag. He was also wearing a distinctive green plastic ‘Petlog’ tag saying that he was micro-chipped. Even if it is bad news, we would just like to know what happened to him. Jokey Lloyd 01279 864422

DOES DIVORCE HAVE TO BE STRESSFUL? Along with moving home and bereavement, divorce is cited as one of the most stressful things life can throw at us. It’s little wonder. As well as the stress of coping with separation and worry over whether the kids will be okay, most of us find ourselves struggling to foot expensive solicitor fees. The good news is that the endless legal bills and long courtroom battle could be a thing of the past. Increasingly, couples looking to ease the strain of divorce turn to mediation as an alternative to expensive solicitors. One such couple are Matt and Ellie. “I had no idea just how draining the divorce would be,” says Matt, 32. “It was on my mind the whole time. I was worried about the twins and terrified I wouldn’t be able to pay the bills let alone the solicitors.” Thanks to Hazel at Essex Mediation, these worries are a thing of the past. “Essex Mediation saved us a fortune, which was a big weight off my mind. And we were able to come to an agreement without having to drag it through the courts. It just made the whole thing so much easier.” “I can’t thank Essex Mediation enough.” says Ellie. So does divorce have to be stressful? It seems divorce will never be a walk in the park but thanks to Essex Mediation it can be whole lot easier to bear.

Dear Martha, MY DIVORCE IS TAKING OVER MY LIFE My husband and I have decided to split after 8 years of marriage and I’m struggling to cope with it all. My emotions are all over the place. I’m upsetting the kids, which breaks my heart, and to make it even worse I’m worrying about how I’m going to pay the solicitor. I just don’t know what to do next. Please help. Is there a way I can make it easier on us all? (Crazy and Alone, Essex) Dear Crazy and Alone, Try Essex Mediation (01279 311431). They have over 10 years’ experience in helping people just like you. Your first appointment will be completely free and there is no obligation to carry on if you don’t think mediation is right for you. What have you got to lose? It’s an alternative to using solicitors alone and could help you reduce your legal costs by over 90%. What’s more, they can help you and your ex find a solution without going through the courts— which will make it much easier on all involved—especially the kids.
