About: Aliyah Whatley Thursday, April 29, 2021 By LESLEY HAYLES

Aliyah Whatley was born at the Mercy Hospital in Guyana on the 16 th of November. At the age of 5, Whatley moved to Trinidad via Tobago, where she grew up and lives to this day. She attended the El Dorado East Secondary School. The 19-year-old model realized she wanted to be an actress since she was 10 years of age as she found the diversity and sense of fantasizing incredible; the art behind the stories captured her attention. Whatley remembered when she used to watch one of her favourite TV shows, Hannah Montana, wishing and praying to be on television just like her one day. From there, Whatley knew she wanted to be an actress with full support from her parents. Whatley credits Miley Cyrus, Will Smith and others as her influences growing up. The self-motivated aspiring actress often look within herself for inspiration as she gets into her acting zone. Whatley is

signed to a modeling agency in Trinidad called Island Girls Modeling Agency and didn’t start pursuing her passion for acting until age 19, when on March 23, 2021 she got the call from her modeling agent, Shanta Bishop, about an available opportunity. This first acting gig was where she was discovered by Keyon Bryon from Visionary Productions and came in the form of “The Hit Woman” in his movie called Batchack Man 2. Bryon had contacted Bishop, looking for females to act in a scene.

That’s when Whatley’s talent for acting was acknowledged by Ancil Harris of Network GT, who immediately sought to cast her for the part of “Ameera” in the Ville Ventures Universe show, Black Land. She likes working with Bryon and Harris since they’ve both taught her so much while filming with them and it’s been an honour for her as well. However, in the future, Whatley would like to work with William Morris Endeavour, one of the largest talent agencies in the world.

To get into character for any role, Whatley tries to imagine what the scenario would be like in real life, how she would react if faced with such a scenario and how she would feel about it. Before filming begins, she would literally play out the situation in her head, pinpointing her facial expressions of each action in the mirror. Her preferred types of movies/shows to act in are sci-fi, action and horror. Her desire to have so much of herself to share and tell the world, with acting, she believes, might be the only way she can share that without having to vocalize it.

The feedback on her acting is amazing for someone who has never acted before with compliments ranging from “great job for a newcomer” to “you’re a natural!” It’s been all positive feedback from day one and it gives her the hope that within the next 5 years, she’ll be traveling the world; acting and modeling in the most exotic places; meeting new people and changing her legacy. Her message for young actresses like herself is: “A wise man once told me that when a horse is running a race, it wears blinders so that it can stay focused and not run off track, to help keep the negative away. My message to young actresses like myself is to do like a horse and put on blinders. Stay focused until you reach the finish line. Never let anyone say you can’t; never tell yourself you can’t and always remember to pray to the Almighty God.”

Whatley is signed to a modeling agency but would be pleased to join an acting agency sometime in the future. With no 9-5, acting and modeling are her full time jobs. Whatley would be the first actor in her family. She has only worked with Bryon and Harris so far and still shooting scenes for Black Land. Batchack Man 2 is in it’s editing process. Both projects are set to be released soon.

Q& A

:w/Aliyah Whatley

Friday, April 30, 2021 By LESLEY HAYLES Young Trinidad-based actress, Aliyah Whatley, represents for Caribbean people of colour in Black Lands

Guyana-born, Aliyah Whatley, is a 19-year-old model who has always dreamed of entering the world of acting. This dream became a reality when her modeling agent, Shanta Bishop from Island Girls Modeling Agency, was contacted by Visionary Productions' owner, Keyon Bryon, who was looking for a female for a role in his movie, Batchack Man 2. Bryon gave the role of "The Hit Woman" to Whatley, who delivered an astounding performance at the audition. With the film in its editing process, Bryon asked his colleague, Ancil Harris of Network GT, Ville Ventures Universe and CMix Magazine, his opinion of Whatley. Harris was amazed by her acting skills, moreso for the fact that she's never acted before. Harris immediately casted Whatley for the starring role of "Ameera" in Black Land. CMix Magazine's Jamaica-based Editor-in-chief, Lesley Hayles, had a little one-on-one with Miss Whatley via WhatsApp to get to know this rising star some more.

Q: You've literally been acting for just a little over a month now. What has the experience been like for you, knowing that your dreams of becoming an actress are finally coming true? A: Honestly, it has been very exciting. It's like a dream come true, well one of my dreams come true. At first, I thought I wouldn't be able to perform well, to act well, to give off facial expressions well so I had like a bit of discouragement within myself but when I met Keyon Bryon, he kinda comforted me and has been building a bit of confidence on set thinking that, "Yeah, probably Aliyah, you can do this. This has been your dream, I believe you can do this." So the experience has been a little bit mixed up and one time I'll think I [won't] be good enough and next time I'll think, "You know what, I can definitely do this." It's an overwhelming experience but the fact that Ancil Harris and Keyon Bryon make you feel like a part of the family is what really makes the experience great.

Q: You do seem like you're very shy. What/Who motivates you to give it your all each day? A: Yes, I'm a very shy person, especially if I don't know someone. Honestly, my mom, she motivates me a lot. Like if she

knows I want to do something, she will really and truly just be my whole support system, she'll be my inspiration, everything. She will try to give me ideas, she will pray for me and tell me that, "Aliyah, you can do this. You're my daughter. I believe in you." We would sit down and talk about ideas, you know, so I believe that my mom is my inspiration and the fact that I have her and my father by my side to support me with whatever I want to do in life is what makes me want to do 100% in whatever I put in and whatever I decide, with whatever career choice I decide. So, yeah, my parents, my family are my motivation.

Q: So would you consider your parents as your mentors as well? Or do you consider [Keyon] Bryon and [Ancil] Harris as your mentors? A: Yes, I would consider [Ancil Harris and Keyon Bryon] as my mentors on set because if I am not sure what to do or not

sure how to put my face for a certain situation that the movie requires, they would show me, they would demonstrate and tell me. They would teach me certain things to do and not to do when acting a movie. So yeah, I would consider [them] as mentors.

Q: You talk about your parents being your main source of inspiration. You were born in Guyana but are your parents Guyanese or Trinidadian? A: I don't usually tell anyone this but I've never met my biological father before. I heard stories about him. I've tried getting

in contact with him but nothing has ever really worked out but I am living with my stepfather and he's more of a dad to me than my biological father has ever been. So, my mom, she's a Guyanese and my stepdad is a Trinidadian.

Where her biological dad is concerned, if her success should warrant him reaching out to her, Whatley had this to say: "I will definately accept his support. He can be like a friend to me but I don't think that I could consider him as a father. I will just know him to be more of a sperm donor but not a father figure. But if he can be a friend to me, someone who can give me positive advice when needed and stuff, yeah, that would be very thoughtful and appreciative but he would never take the place of my stepdad [Phil]. I'm sorry to say but my stepdad, he worked very hard and he earned his position and his title can not be given up so easily. I'm sorry."

Q: OK, I understand. Have you ever been back to Guyana or anywhere else ouside of Trinidad? A: No. [After leaving Guyana] I went to Tobago, I think at the age of 3, maybe 4. I came to Trinidad at the age of 5 and I

have never left since then. I cannot leave the country anytime soon due to some document situation but no, I've never traveled and go anywhere out of Trinidad before.

When asked why, Whatley said, "Because I'm not from Trinidad, getting an ID card and passport is very difficult and ex-

pensive. And now that I'm of age, I have to do it on my own which makes the process longer because I can't get a job. That's why I don't work a 9-5."

Q: Well, in that case, what do you do in your spare time to take your mind off things? What do you do for fun? A: Well, to take my mind off of that, I mostly sleep (chuckles). But other than that, I'm a moko jumbie for 2 groups called

Little Giants and Jaiso, [performing at schools, parks, etc.]. I also model for an agency called Island Girls Modeling Agency. Yeah, I try to join as much things that I can, just to take my mind off of stuff to try to reach somewhere, see if I can better myself, to see if I can earn an income to help with the [iCard] and my passport instead of just sitting at home and not doing anything. I just considering and wondering when it will be done. I try to go out there and try to earn an income the right way to start to prepare myself for when it's time for me to travel, I know I will be set.

Q: What types of music do you listen to? A: I love Soca and I love Dancehall and mostly Afrobeats. Afrobeats, I love that. I feel like I can express myself. When I

dance is one of the ways that I can express myself through Afrobeats. So if I am walking down the road and I hear an afrobeat, some part of my body, it just start shaking. It's like something in me says, "Aliyah go! This is your song!" You know? So yeah, I love Afrobeats, Soca, Dancehall. Yeah, that's it. (chuckles)

Q: You're 19. You're young. You're a dark-skinned female. What has been your challenges so far in acting? A: I haven't had any challenges in acting yet but what I do know is that in any industry, be it modeling or acting, etc., once

you're a teenager, people tend to class you as immature and my skin has actually helped me reached to where I am right now. Although, sometimes it can be a problem because [some] will find that I'm not suitable for the part because I'm too dark. So, in other words, my skin and age can bring both opportunities and disappointment in the acting and modeling industry.

Q: What changes would you like to see, then, in favour of females in the acting business, especially for women of colour from the Caribbean? A: I would love if people can give women of color opportunities to shine as well. Let's see some darker people on television, let's see them shining as well. We're all human beings with dreams. I don't think anyone should stripped of an opportunity just because of their skin colour or race. There should be more people like Ancil Harris to help give youths, young adults with dreams a chance to shine.

Q: Other than Harris and Bryon, how have men in the business been treating you? Are other women supportive? A: Well I've never really met anyone else besides Keyon and Ancil. Q: Do you think that eventually you will stop modeling and pursue acting full time? A: Yes! If I got the opportunity, I believe I will stop modeling and pursue acting as a full time job. Q: And finally, which big Hollywood blockbuster film is your favourite of all time? A: My favorite movie is Bad Boys.

Paronyde Bio Wednesday, May 12, 2021 By LESLEY HAYLES

Upcoming Dancehall/Reggae Artiste, Paronyde, was born Talbert Brown in Spanish Town on January 23rd and grew up around the March Pen Road, Eltham Park, Eltham View and Mount View areas in St Catherine. He attended the Jonathan Grant, Willow Dean and Dunoon Technical High schools. Brown got the name “Paronyde” from a childhood friend who gave it to him as a joke. When he realized he wanted to be an artiste around the age of 15, Brown decided to keep the name Paronyde as his stage name. It wasn’t until he turned 22, though, that he started to pursue music. His mother has always supported this career choice but not his father, especially since no other musician is in his family. Growing up, however, Paronyde had the likes of Half Pint, Bob Marley, Edi Fitzroy, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Lt Stitchie, Admiral Bailey, Papa San, Wolfman, Lady Saw, Marcia Griffiths, Junior Tucker, JC Lodge, Nadine Sutherland, Nitty Kutchie, Bushman, Chaka Demus and Pliers as his influences. Musically, he is also inspired by Ras Ghandi, Notorious B.I.G, Kibaki and Lt Stitchie, just to name a few. His first recording was a track called “Next DJ Out Of Jamaica” on the One Pop/Taxi Gang label in 2003 working with Kaz One Pop. It was never released and the disappointment caused Paronyde to take a break from music. Eventually, Paronyde migrated to the United States in March 2007, where he

went on to become a yacht detailer of a company he co-owns called Island Yacht Detailing. The Florida-based Artiste met popular DJ/ Artiste/Producer, Supahype, and Dancehall Artiste, Chi Ching Ching, in 2009 which then revitalized his passion for music.

It wasn’t until 2019, however, that Paronyde began recording again. Since then, Paronyde has worked with Supahype from 2020 on several projects; Dave Richards and the Home Bred Band on songs called “Everybody” featuring Shauna Allen and “Freaky Girls” yet to be released under his label alongside Home Bred Productions; as well as Krish Will. He likes working with Supahype and sees many great tracks coming from the UPT camp for years to come.

It would be an honour for him to work with Kibaki, Spice, Ghandi, Jada Kingdom, Shenseea, Bounty Killer and Nitty Kutchie. Currently, a collaboration with the latter is already in the making. Paronyde is also working on his EP, with singles like “Yeng Yeng/110” released in May 2021 on the Styling Gel Riddim, “UFO Love”, “If I Should Die Tonight” and “Worl Gyalis” featuring Supahype, set for release in the upcoming months.

The preference is always to do Dancehall and Reggae music first but Paronyde has done records in other genres like Pop, EDM, Soft Rock and Hip-Hop/Rap. His versatility will carry him a long way, with the feedback being tremendously positive so far. Doing better for his Dancehall culture is what drove him to become an artiste in the first place; his talent and determination will help Paronyde do just that.

Paronyde is aiming towards winning a Grammy within 5 years’ time, giving him greater opportunities to easily collaborate with major artistes. His message to other upcoming entertainers like himself is: “Continue to be real. Stay focused and ready. Have a goal and work hard towards it.”

Relying on the support of his newly built team, Paronyde is sure to achieve his goals. He owns and is signed to his label, Island Yacht Music, and is managed by Chantelle Wright out of New York. The team also consists of his Jamaica-based Publicist, Lesley Hayles; Supahype, of course, and chances are, with more to be added in the future.

Miggz Meddi shows his Crocodile Teeth in new freestyle Thursday, May 6, 2021 By LESLEY HAYLES UK-based, Jamaican recording artiste, Miggz Meddi, recently released his version of the Skillibeng track, “Crocodile Teeth”, in a freestyle remix format. On the 23rd of April, 2021, the “Crocodile Teeth Freestyle” dropped worldwide along with an accompanying music video on YouTube. In the track, Miggz Meddi talks about his days as a child growing up in Jamaica utilizing his very own way of delivering uniquely constructed lyrics. He talks about the inspiration behind the remix: “I always liked the song and as a fellow Jamaican from St. Thomas, Skillibeng made me proud because this song was being played all over the world. I live In London and the youths in London really like the song. This is why I decided to do a remix but in my own style. In this remix, I was speaking about factual stuff that happen in my life, for example, me being featured in the Jamaica Star around 2 months ago.” Miggz Meddi is charging forward at full speed as he looks ahead to making his mark on the music scene since receiving an overwhelming positive feedback from the release of the remix. “The feedback is amazing. People would see me and tell me they love the freestyle and they would beg me to release more freestyles like it,” he said.

It is expected that “Crocodile Teeth Freestyle” will open many more doors for the artiste, not only in the UK and Jamaica, but also worldwide. The song is currently been played on a few local radio stations in London.

The talented artiste is regarded as a sing-jay, relaying a distinctive type of flow where he often times can be heard on a record, but he decided to put a twist on something old to make it sound incredibly new. Currently, Miggz Meddi is working on a project to be released at the end of the year. He is also going to be dropping more singles and some collaborations very soon. It’s just non-stop work for the upcoming artiste. He is not signed to a major label at the moment. However, he has a team called RNP. He is being managed by Anthony Haynes from Haynes Records in Jamaica. Miggz Meddi is known for songs such as “Enjoy Life”, “Money Me Want” and “Blessings” featuring Artaiga. Legend Sean Paul “Live N Livin” Atop iTunes Reggae Charts Thursday, March 11, 2021 By LESLEY HAYLES

The entertainment industry is being hit the hardest during the COVID pandemic but that hasn’t stopped talented artistes worldwide from hitting back with musical punches. Now, with the international market finally opening up its once sealed doors to the Caribbean, Dancehall artistes especially are proudly stepping through in hopes of capitalizing on the global stage with streams using Spotify. Grammy award winning Dancehall/Reggae artiste, Sean Paul, peaked at #2 on the iTunes Reggae pre-order list since it became available the last week in February 2021. The “Live N Livin” album only made its way there from 10th to 3rd to 2nd after the

release of “Don’t Mean To Brag” by newcomer Mzs Quanny on March 6th. However, a week later on March 12, Sean Paul’s 16track album debuted at #1 on the iTunes Reggae Chart. While having another Grammy nod would be icing on the cake, Sean Paul stated in earlier interviews that he is more focused on putting out the best cake instead. The album includes 12 collaborations, a deliberate deed as an intent to unite the Dancehall world, versus counter actions and competition which divides us more than helps up grow to international standards. It’s the first of two albums set for release in 2021, a full-on hardcore Dancehall project that features the likes of Buju Banton, Chi Ching Ching, Masicka, Busy Signal, Suku Ward and much more that is sure to whet all appetites in preparation for dance floors worldwide when “outside” reopens again.

His sixth studio album, “Full Frequency”, was his last with Atlantic Records almost seven years ago; the EP “Mad Love The Prequel”, some singles and collaborations with Stefflon Don, J Balvin and others the only works he’s put out since then. Under his Dutty Rock Records label, “Live N Livin” makes this an official return for the legendary artiste, with the second album of 2021, “Scorcha”, having a planned release date in May that includes appearances from Jada Kindom, Stylo G and international acts Ty Dolla $ign, Sia and Gwen Stefani, among others. Spotify became available in his home country of Jamaica since March 2021, therefore, “Live N Livin” is expected to hit high streaming numbers. That is also the hope of Mzs Quanny for her first LP, “Don’t Mean To Brag”. Her goal too is charting on Billboard since they’ve switched their way of compiling the Reggae Albums chart, from a sales-only table to a stream-driven format on their website. However, it would come as no surprise if Sean Paul tops it there as well.

The Philadelphia songstress has already made an impact on the Dancehall scene after her first album, “Don’t Mean To Brag”, peaked at number 5 on the iTunes Reggae charts and number 7 on the Amazon Reggae charts within the first day of its release. To date, her album has racked up over 100,000 streams on Spotify. Mzs Quanny has remarked that, “To be up against the likes of a legend in the business such as Sean Paul, is an honor already within itself.”

Hopefully, VEVO would soon follow suit and open up to the Caribbean. Besides that, the only other dream left now is for the world to differentiate between Reggae and Dancehall, with separate charts and awards across all platforms and to one day even include Soca and other Caribbean music forms.

Dancehall artiste DiCelebrityy, given name Adrian Campbell, is upping the promotion of his latest single, “VIP”, featuring one of Dancehall’s most current superstar, Skillibeng. “VIP” was released on February 5th, 2021 on his Pyyros Govament Production label. When asked how the collaboration came about, DiCelebrityy said, “It was just the right time and place. I would say it was where preparation meets opportunity. That means, I was ready and he was too.” While recording alongside Skillibeng, DiCelebrityy also had this to say: “The vibe was real. He listened to the beat, loved the track after the song was finished and already is in existence.” What was the inspiration behind the collaboration? DiCelebrityy says the main aim was to keep it real with the people and sing about something that they can relate to. To aspire to do or live that way, which is the VIP lifestyle, was also an inspiration behind the track. So far, the feedback has been overwhelming. The Biography of Cay-Z Saturday, March 27, 2021 By LESLEY HAYLES

Born Kayolin Martin in Sav-La-Mar and grew up in Smithfield, Westmoreland with her greatgrandaunt until she was 7 years old and went to live with her mother while her father was ever present in her life. The Reggae/Dancehall artiste went by the moniker Lady Cay, a name she got from becoming popular in dancing at various events. However, the name was altered in April 2021 to Cay-Z, a name that reflects her versatility. She attended the Godfrey Stewart High School, then got certified in cooking due to her initial love for the kitchen, and went on to work as a waitress at a Beaches Resort hotel. Cay-Z got her start in music singing in church from a very young age. She was a member of her youth choir and this built her confidence to perform on stage. While there are no other musicians in her family, they are all lovers of music; with Maxi Priest being a major influence to her, growing up watching his performances on VHS during those video cassette/VCR days. Later on, Cay-Z developed

a passion for songs by Etana. This fed her desire to do music more, leading her to the stage and performing at parties, weddings and competing in various talent shows against other upcoming artistes, winning multiple awards.

While working at Beaches, Cay-Z gained an even greater experience by joining a band and performing on stage for a diverse audience visiting Jamaica from all over the world. The feeling inspires her up to today: singing with a band, the stage, the love and motivation from the audience. Cay-Z moved to the Turks & Caicos Islands in 2013, continued working for Beaches Resorts and building her fan base there. Producers from Triple Bro Records recognized her talent and began working with her, releasing her first official single, “Whining Up” in 2018. She has since signed with the label based in the Turks & Caicos Islands and dropped “Can’t Get Enough” in 2019, “Survivor” in 2020 as Lady Cay and “Facetime” ready for a planned release in 2021. Currently, Cay-Z is working on an EP.

In due time, the dedicated artiste would like to see herself traveling the world, bringing good music to global Dancehall fans. Cay-Z is hoping that by then, older artistes would collaborate more with the younger ones. She is yet to work with any other artiste or producer other than those from Triple Bro Records.

Her message to other upcoming artistes is: “Always believe in yourself. Age doesn’t have a barrier or a start for talent. Keep motivated even when it seems like it’s a rough road to accomplish your dreams. Hold on. A test is always there to be completed before success. Let self-love and confidence continue to flow positiveness through your veins.”

To date, Cay-Z states that so far, she has not been given any negative feedback, but instead, all strength from every avenue. The Turks & Caicos’ support has been phenomenal with a very strong fan base. It is the belief that having Triple Bro Records behind her, providing the right team and the support are all she needs to bring her career to higher heights.

Retstar Biography Monday, April 26, 2021 by LESLEY HAYLES

Upcoming Dancehall artiste, Retstar, was born Tyrese Walker on November 19 at the Spanish Town Hospital in Saint Catherine, Jamaica. He grew up in May Pen, Clarendon in an area called Sevens Road, otherwise known as “Farm”. Retstar attended Central High, Vere Technical and May Pen High Schools. Despite not having a regular 9-5 job, the 19-year-old literally gets his hands dirty daily by farming and raising chickens. The youngster has always been a big fan of music, loving the different sounds. Therefore, he began pursuing music from the age of 12. His parents have been extremely supportive of his career choices and fans of his music from the get-go. Retstar has an aunt, an uncle and cousins withing the music business, hence, his influence growing up stemmed from them as well as some of his friends. His oldest cousin, Shammare, inspires him the most musically. Retstar got his stage name from his cousin who at

first dubbed him “Rettae”, but since childhood, Retstar believes he’s always been a star so they both decided to switch it to “Retstar”.

The thing that drove Retstar into becoming an artiste is the desire to speak to youths of Jamaica, especially in the garrisons, about life being bigger than the ghetto and killing each other. He wasn’t sure how to do that but God told him to do so through music and it happened. Retstar is not signed to a label yet but he is based at LDR Recordz which is owned by his manager, Ivayda.

The go-to genres of Retstar are Dancehall, Reggae and Hip-Hop. His first recording was a song called “May Pen Choppa”. At the moment, he is only working with LDR Recordz, with many projects in the works. Retstar didn’t want to disclose just yet what he’s working on because he loves to surprise his fans with new content at various intervals so as to keep them on their toes in anticipation. However, the one to hit the road soon though is a single called “Neva Know”, produced by LDR Recordz. Retstar would like to collaborate with artistes like Rick Ross, Roddy Rich, Lil Baby, Masicka and Popcaan, as well as producer NotNice among others.

Retstar sees himself topping all markets with his products all over the world and setting trends. His message to others like him: “Work hard and be patient. Anything is possible. You never know when it’s your time to start succeed.”

The feedback so far is making him excited as everyone around him is happy for him and can’t get enough of his voice. They keep telling him that he’s going to be the next Vybz Kartel.
