This Atlantis Cup Magazine, edited annually, exists as the support of a very remarkable activity of Clube Naval da Horta, which is the Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia. With it we can accentuate the importance of the Regatta, create an advertising space of our supporters and sponsors and offer the participants of the Regata da Autonomia, the Associates and the general interested public some information regarding activities, topics and events connected to the sea. With this edition, in Portuguese and in English, we lay, once more, on the hands of the public a Magazine made with the commitment of a lot of people, with the support of a lot others and conceived to be a link between the public who reads it and the club who edits it. ,n this edition, are relevant the messages of 2fĆcial and Associative Entities who support the Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia and other aspects of the activity of Clube Naval da Horta, the articles concerning themes linked to the sea, to the environment, to the maritime History and to the people who, voluntarily, commit themselves in the associative activity, and still, the news reports about some of the major events held during the current year. We sincerely expect that this edition, like the ones before, contributes for the narrowing of the relations between nautical athletes and this Clube Naval da Horta, who exists and works hard to promote the nautical sports and to promote the Azores.

Here we are once again to help build the prestigious Atlantis Cup Regata da Autonomia which celebrates its 27th edition. To us Angra Iate Clube the attitude is the same as always it is both a pleasure and an honour to contribute to this event that is a reference in the Azorean nautical sport. The “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomiaâ€? will set sail again this year being the 27th edition. After the successes of the last years we were cheered by the motivation of giving the best of us in a way of reinforcing the sports seal of this cruising regatta and in a way of improving the social program offered to the crews. Inside that guideline we worNed to reáne several aspects creating last year awards for each of the three legs decision that translated in one more impulse for the crews and allowed to associate new sponsors to the social program to taNe place in each island. This solution is repeated and improved this year. Also inside that same guideline we decided to Neep the Atlantis Cup Magazine in both printed and electronic editions we had the attention of assuring diversiáed collaborations and producing the magazine with accentuated graphic Tuality. :e recNon on the Highly 6ponsor of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores with the support of the Azorean Tourism with the useful collaboration of the City Councils of 9ila do 3orto 3onta 'elgada Angra do HeroÂŻsmo and Horta and with the priceless support of 3orto dos AŠores 6A and 6ATA Air AŠores that together with our private 6ponsors maNe possible the execution of this Regata

Being a natural harbour delimited at North and 6outh with headlands Espalamaca and Monte da Guia but having the 3ico Island at miles to the East and the 6ÂĽo -orge Island at 2 miles Northeast all this turned years before the construction of artificial docNs Horta into a very sought destiny especially after the th century with the growing transatlantic traffic. In Horta many damages were repaired bacN in the days of the sail and the steam boat; in Horta the American whale fleet was provisioned and unloaded; in Horta existed until the mid-2 th century a coal supplying warehouse for the steam boats; in Horta water landed all the North Atlantic air navigation pioneer planes; in Horta in the ’s operated the first commercial airport for hydroplanes; in Horta during :orld :ar II after was installed an allied naval base and before many ships with damages or need to scale were harboured. All this mentioned activity ended up leaving a strong port activity marN in Faial’s economy. The harbour demand started to create new response abilities to the navigation reTuests.

“Llangibby Castle� was a passenger ship built in 2 incorporated in the Royal Navy in . It held . tons and was meters long. After the war it returned to serve as a passenger ship until . 3hotograph shows “Llangibby Castle� in Horta Harbour. One can notice the damaged condition of the stern. Emphasis on the emergency repair here in Horta and while the ship was floating allowing it to arrive Gibraltar. That repair held in local repair garages was accomplished in only days and reveals the great capacity those garages had acTuired so far without a dry docN.

Today I tell you about a revealing episode of that response ability. In -anuary th 2 the English Troopship “�Llangibby Castle� was attacNed with a torpedo to North of the Azores in the Bay of Biscay latitude by the German submarine 8- 2 suffering several serious stern damages. The attacN led to the death of 2 English military men. Three days after this attacN the “Llangibby Castle� entered the Horta Harbour by its own means where during days it was subMect to emergency repairs that allowed it to navigate to Gibraltar with the help of the “Thames� towboat. In February 2nd this Troopship left the Harbour escorted by the English destroyers “Crome� “:estcott� and “Exmoor�. In the beginning of that Mourney the HM6 “:estcott� sanN the German submarine 8- in the entry of the Faial 3ico canal. This was one of the many German submarines sent to the Azorean 6ea with the attempt of sinNing allied damaged troopships.

investigation, like the “Porquois Pas?� or the “Meteor�, scientists typically join one week to one month missions. On those periods, they have three big goals: 1 – gather the information and the samples they planned, 2 – add to the generic success of the missions they are part of, and 3 – start or strengthen scientific networks that allow even bigger steps. There is another goal, less evident, but as important: to have fun! I have to admit that the excitement of the knowledge and meeting new colleagues means a great pleasure to me.

formal questions take on a very important role, only similar to the large generosity and commitment of the involved parties. Aboard the non-governmental environment organizations ships, the sustainable development, which on a daily basis leans towards social and economic questions, here inclines totally to the environmental questions. On the other hand, on the missions aboard private companies, the priority is the duality efficacy/efficiency. Everything is registered and must happen according to the pre-established schedule.

Summer Missions Given the strictness of the atmospheric events during the winter, Azorean marine scientists take advantage of the summer to develop what one might call “field workâ€? (deceiving name, given the lack of a better one, since they are far from working in a field, but in the sea). Therefore, great part of the months from May through September are used to gather information and samples, close and far from shore, that contribute to the structure of the scientific thought. Some scientists gather information about the depth temperature and the salinity, others check the situation of fish farming sources, there are scientists who worry about the distribution of some rare species and even others who monitor the presence of alien species. However, the complexity of the scientific questions on the Azorean sea goes beyond the limits of the marine depths and discusses themes as mysterious as the darkness that insists to reign there. For an instance, there are marine scientists who are now studying something as esoteric as the biodiversity existing at the sub bottom of the great depth hydrothermal fountains. These are alluring subjects and are located on what is called the “border of knowledgeâ€?. Aboard ships like the “ArquipĂŠlagoâ€? or the â€œĂ guas-Vivasâ€? speed-boat, but many times on international scientific cooperation missions aboard giants of the marine

In this last regard, the fun part, and having already been part of several kind of marine scientific missions, I established a hierarchy of the missions, according to the pleasure they give me. Just to mention the three best ones, in crescent order of rejoice, we have, in third place, the missions held in big international ships. These authentic floating cities of scientists are the best place to conduct experiences with the fresh sampled materials, are absolutely fantastic places to discuss the science of one another, given that no one can flee the ship, and many times are equipped with long reach instruments, like submarines and remotely operated vehicles. With these instruments, it is possible to witness the deepest zones of the oceans in total safety and complete rather complex tasks. In spite of being third place in pleasure, there is no doubt that these missions produce more and better science. Without any hesitation. However, for the pleasures of live, science isn’t everything. In second, I place the missions held aboard informal scientific ships. Working aboard the Navy ships, aboard environmental protection organizations ships, like Greenpeace, or on platforms of private corporations affords me moments of incredible individual growth. On these mixed environments, the contrast in the approach to the different subjects is greatly enriching. In the Navy, for an instance, the

The approaches are totally distinct. Nevertheless, in my hierarchy, the top is filled by the missions that include diving with autonomous diving suit. Be the one day exits, to gather images, or the several day missions to, for example, check the environmental conditions in the Formigas Islets Bank or in the D. João de Castro Bank, these are the tasks that give me the most pleasure. To open the eyes, right after getting into the water, and seeing a manta ray, a slippery amberjack fish or the deceiving smile of a moray eel between the rocky sea bottoms, and all the other situations one can be confronted with after inhaling for the first time the regulator cold air in each of the new immersions‌ rare were the dives that ended with disappointment, in the Azores. There was always a moment to register and to rejoice over. Summer missions are, for most of the marine scientists, one of the essential reasons why they chose and conserve both energy and enthusiasm in their activities. Between the huge instability and uncertainty of the job, the barely slept hours thinking about new scientific challenges and the days employed on the experiment planning, the days spent at sea are always a reason to give us an immediate grin from ear to ear and a giant desire to dive in!

Then there is the smell of the land replacing the tidal waves that have been accompanying us being friendly received and socialize with the locals and the sailors. Every single one is simply a sailor leaving behind their Mobs as businessman teacher engineer farmer doctor or nurse. 6ailing without the disturbing noise of the engine. Learning to Nnow the tides the winds the secrets of passing and approaching each island.

The 3ortuguese set sail and turn their bacNs on land because our true nation is the 6ea. Eternal soul of sailor men sailor 6oul we the Azorean do the same between islands or amongst further whereabouts.

Finding the same old fellows sea made men liNe Hildeberto LuÂŻs AntÂľnio LuÂŻs Nuno 6antos and so many others. Learning with each one of them the art of sailing. Each one brings the Nnowledge the irreverence the bravery the simplicity resulting from a practice that in Faial we enMoy in a so special and shared way it made me fell in love and Neeps motivating me.

6ailing in the middle of the Atlantic open deep turTuoise blue sea unexpected sea of calmness or storms living sea it gives us bacN our maritime life the audacity that tooN us to the horizon that made the ocean straight.

Reconciling all this with the adrenaline of a tough regatta an extremely competitive one translates in this great shared challenge named Atlantis Cup the most outstanding oceanic “Regatta� in the Azores and in 3ortugal.

.eels that enMoy tides hurled by the winds sails that steal their souls and maNe us masts overøowing with oceans.

These are amongst others the reasons that taNe me this year to fulál the 2th participation in 27 editions. 6tarting bacN in with the sail boat Moody LuTui now called Filigrana; winning in 7 with the ;-Treem a boat that we miss so much having conditioned all following names and after a pause for the earthTuaNe in Faial of eight years getting bacN in 2 . Each year ever since counting six victories three regional championships but especially with much much pleasure in being part of it.

Gil 9icente wrote that the Nings of 3ortugal conTuer the 6ea of the :orld.

The sea is the strength that rises out of time and space and rips from us all the root sentiment that maNes us earth bound. And in the Azores that’s the way it goes. One constant movement of waters and meetings with a marine yet well conserved life who Nnows turtles sperm whales tuna áshes ásh balls rafts of Cory’s shearwater and the so constant unexpected on the open sea. Every day on this regatta there’s an approach to a different island watching them form on the horizon sailing between 6ÂĽo -orge and

Now with the present ;cape more suited to the øeet and with so many good signs of being a purebred such as transmitted last year.

Of course one can ánd their own way of being part some in a cruising a relaxed way and others in a more competitive way. As a result of my sporting past in Athletics 6wimming and spearáshing this is where I mostly ánd myself.

:e have been through ups and downs in terms of organization as a conseTuence of the many board of directors that have been on the lead of Clube Naval da Horta more or less focused on this Regatta.

Being the Regatta of the Regattas to me it is the one we focus the most trying to present ourselves in a more competitive way what we can accomplish with a good boat or gear but mainly good sailing staff the 6oul of the boat. :e have been a rather homogenous crew and have been sailing together for years in a great surrounding without conøicts or disagreements much sharing Nnowing when to digest the losses and enMoy the victories. Highlight to the important collaboration of Miguel Guimar¼es representing 'ufour the boats we have been sailing on 3aulo 6ilva Neusa and 'iogo 3ereira from 6ailáx Company representing the sails we unfurl. They have been an important asset a source of Nnowledge and purely based on the pleasure of participating in this Regatta they helped us immensely to get where we are now.

Considering the present group that has brought up all the prestige this regatta has who is very open minded committed and motivated. The current course is in my opinion the ideal solution one weeN islands out of bordering 2 more competition as “il faut� under an international considered rating enough cruise and fabulous social time. The conditions are excellent for this to be one more success in terms of organization and participation. Also considering some sentences heard in the past from some not so motivated people in these nautical toils “<ou guys are only there because we’re here� whoever these words only let down the ones who said it and are empty words not even gone with the wind. 6ailing is the need to carry the sea in the heart. ThanN you Clube Naval da Horta for giving us the opportunity to participate in this Regatta.

But after all what is 9olunteer :orN" It may have a different definition for every person according to their personal vision but there is no doubt that the basic definition is first and foremost wanting to worN for free for the saNe of a cause. And I say “want� because it implies motivation willingness and availability from onevs part. In 3ortugal we often say that anyone that runs for pleasure doesn’t get tired; well in fact it does get tiring but if we identify with a cause then even tired it is worth it because when we give it all; and we only thinN of the ideal the results and we end up forgetting everything else. A priest who crossed my parish once freTuently referred this maximum that we must “erode� oneself in benefit of others. 9olunteer :orN is more or less liNe that I let myself “erode� or rather I give myself and give the most precious gift I have which is my time in favour of something and or someone. If there is an institution that Nnows in its “fabric� the value of 9olunteer :orN it is Clube Naval da Horta – CNH (Horta Naval Club ; since always this institution has counted with the committed worN of the volunteer worNers; may they be directors associates friends supporters or anonymous citizens. Naturally the athletes and the club staff can also be “painted� this way regardless of the functions or role they play in the Club. The 9olunteer :orN can be seen as a chain which connects one linN to another until it becomes a

powerful force. And the linNs in this chain are the parents of the athletes they are the ones who help prepare snacNs for the trials help organize the spaces for different activities cooN dishes meals for the holidays; became the elements that constitute the Regatta and 3rotest committees (also sailing activity whom assemble and disassemble routes those that time the trials and supervise the nautical activities; who go out to the sea in support vessels ensuring the safety and giving all the necessary collaboration and they are also the ones who accept to watch the activities and register them for posterity in amateur photography video or Must do it for the fun of it. In another level we have the Associates Friends and the 6upporters that collaborate with their own vessels and together with the elements that maNe up the Managing Bodies of the Club end up streamlining and regulate all activities of the institution. They are all volunteers with different functions; it is this Moin effort that maNes this well-oiled machine worN so well year after year. 'issecting this structure we have the Ruling Bodies of the Club (Main Board General Assembly and Fiscal Council although the worN flow falls mostly on Main Board of management of the Club the Club 6taff and 9olunteers. Noble nautical institution at the service of the Faial people since 7 Clube Naval da Horta is nowadays deep-rooted on the civil and sportive society of our island connecting the athletes and the sea turning it in one singular case of regional and national reference. For someone who lives in Horta nearby Cais de 6anta Cruz the hurry-scurry between -uly and August is something one cannot stay insensitive. 6uch as for someone who strolls by the Marina and cannot but be dazzled by the number of sailors who parN here in search of the so deserved rest and leave their colorful seal on the walls and on the ground. As everyone who may have done it on its own way I crated my own mystic of Clube Naval da Horta. The mystic of sailing boats and sailors the foreigners who coming from all over arrive to this little part of the world provided only with “a piece of fabric and a nutshell� on the vastness of the ocean. On my point of view living only from and for the sea free of cultural social or professional restraints is a few liNely conceivable reality only at the reach of the most courageous. But on the other hand the mystic of the little sailors from Horta who turned into men in this House who learned how to turn their own Cape of 6torms and who today even if apart all this maritime life continue to be sea wolves. I was far from thinNing that the mysterious ways of destiny would bring me at the service of one of the Faial’s institutions that proMects the most the island name out there. My first big event on which I had the pleasure of collaborating was the th National -uvenile Championship on March 2 a competition that Clube Naval da Horta proudly executed with success remembering the wonderful land and sea capacities we have for sailing practice on a national level.

The second event more recently in which I felt the weight of the institution once more was the th International :haleboats Regatta which taNes place every two years and gathers crews from Faial 3ico and New Bedford 86A. It was only after the last social dinner that I had the idea of how big the fellowship and friendship of people who share the same passions are the whaleboat. In here I started to admire the magic of the motor whaleboats reminding voyages from the time of our grandparents and the whaleboats that in times helped the whale hunting and today help telling the story through the ones who use them on regattas. Every time I watch a regatta I have the feeling of being sucNed to older times. At last I could feel in my own sNin the sentiment of someone who serves a cause with a passion going along the Regatta Commission on their trip with the Horta – 9elas – Horta Cruising Regatta. This was the first offshore regatta organized by Clube Naval da Horta Tuite a few years ago. This year’s edition counted with 2 sailboats calling to mind the good old regattas with plenty of sailboats sprinNling the Triangle 6ea. The spirit of Moining a regatta I could tell even onshore or on the support vassel is uniTue. 6etting the race courses waiting on the finish line or help with the departure line counting minutes and seconds delivering the awards the social contact watching proud smiles these are the moments in which we feel part of some higher force. Because in the end it doesn’t matter who wins or arrives the last everyone gets to sit on the same table and share their stories. The mystic of Clube Naval da Horta reminds me of that little happiness chill or that Tuiet sigh of upcoming “saudade� at the nearing end of some activity leaving its marNs and leaving you craving for more all over again.

The event was held by Clube Naval da Horta and by Clube N£utico de 6anta Cruz das Ribeiras with the collaboration of Horta’s City Council and the Association of 3ico

Island’s City Councils. 6ailed both in sailing and in Rowing the Regatta was disputed by one masculine and one feminine crew from the Azorean Maritime Heritage 6ociety of New Bedford MA 86A from 3ico Island and from Faial Island. The program started in 6anta Cruz das Ribeiras on -uly rd with the accomplishment of the árst half of the races st Men’s 6ailing Regatta st and 2nd :omen’s 6ailing Regatta st and 2nd Men’s Rowing Regatta and st :omen’s Rowing Regatta. On 6aturday -uly th there was a breaN on the program to participate on the “4 de -ulhoâ€? Regatta in Horta Bay which was part of the commemorations of the 2nd Anniversary of Horta as a city.

The program was resumed on 6unday -uly th in Faial to accomplish the six remaining regattas 2nd and rd Men’s 6ailing Regatta rd :omen’s 6ailing Regatta rd Men’s Rowing Regatta and 2nd and rd :omen’s Rowing Regatta.

8th National Juvenile Championship

Francisco FrÂŁguas from Clube de 9ela do Barreiro and Beatriz Gago from Clube Naval de 3ortimÂĽo were consecrated the big champions of the th National Juvenile Championship a competition that tooN place in Horta with the organization of Clube Naval da Horta and the Azorean 6ail Association. On the first and second days of regattas the wind was perfect for sailing allowing the sailors to perform six total races. However on the third day the athletes weren’t able to set sail due to the strong wind and current. Finally on the fourth and last day the sailors competed again but the weather managed to be against this time with less wind than expected. Francisco FrÂŁguas from Clube de 9ela do Barreiro was consistent on his performance throughout the days managing to stay st from day one achieving the so well deserved victory. His fellow team mate Manuel Ramos won second place and LuÂŻs 3inheiro from 6port AlgÂŤs e 'afundo finished in third. As for the girls Beatriz Gago from Clube Naval de 3ortimÂĽo was 2th in the overall but secured the first feminine place taNing home the title. InÂŹs Mateus from Clube de 9ela do Barreiro scored the second place finishing in the 4th place overall while 'aniela Miranda from AssociaŠ¼o Naval do Guadiana won the bronze on the th place overall.

The accomplishment of a National Championship in this case the Muvenile class in the Azores Autonomous Region and here on Horta in particular is much positive for a vast number of reasons. On one side the sporting and unity reasons being one very important contribute so the 6ailing practiced here in the Azores may have a much stronger connection with the standard and the level that the national territory has already reached. It’s also deeply important from the isolation rupture point of view. Here we are much isolated the competitive level is necessarily much weaNened and it gives this generation between 2 and years old and the respective staff the possibility to visit a region that has special sailing sNills and to Nnow a Region that is part of the country but that also greatly needs to be Nnown as whole of the country. There is one other very important reason. It is the fact that it occurred during school 6pring BreaN which means it happens outside of the central period of the nautical sports season. 3recisely announcing the beginning of that season and the 6ea City scales bigger sailboats are starting to arrive at Horta’s Marina and it is a reality worthwhile seeing by the visitors. By conducting the Championship we are therefore widening the nautical sports season. To conclude all this creates a companionship a movement and the share of Nnowledge experiences and wisdom that by themselves are

As soon as the proposal arose the Federation had absolutely no doubt that this would be the best place to happen supporting it . Besides it’s been seven years since it was organized a National Juvenile Championship in the Azores the last one was in 2 in 3onta 'elgada and it was time for us to get bacN. ,!; -9 @3<8 #!ÂŁ!2$' 3( ;,' $316'ধধ32S It was fantastic. I wasn’t here for the árst two days but for the following two days I could state the excellent organization everything was on place a Tuite competent staff and a very committed Clube Naval da Horta insuring that everything went smoothly. The Championship had a lot of Tuality I noticed that the better ones won and therefore I congratulate everyone involved.

First the sport integration of the athletes on a bigger dimension championship. The Azores were able to place a number of sailors that wouldn’t be possible on a competition outside the region achieving the maximum share of 2 athletes. In second place it is important to strengthen the role of the Azores and in this case Horta as a destination of Excellence for the practice of nautical sports specially sailing. I believe this is being achieved the feedbacN we had from the coaches is that they understand the potential the Azores have in this matter. :ho Nnows one day adapting the Azores and in particular Faial as a cluster to this Nind of activities such as traineeships and preparation for Olympic teams

There was a big concern with the athletes’ safety since we’re talNing about 2 teenagers between 2 and years old offshore plus coaches. This was an essential Ney and it worNed Must áne. :e had around 2 vessels at sea in addition to the coaches boats assuring us a good safety warranty. Besides all the organic structure regatta and protest commissions were operating smoothly being not only our opinion but as well the opinion of the ones visiting us whether they be coaches athletes or athletes’ parents who came to watch. Therefore the balance of the whole competition is Tuite positive.
