A Regata Atlantis Cup assume, ano após ano, o desígnio e consolida-se como uma das mais importantes provas de vela de cruzeiro realizada em Portugal, mas também como um inegável potencial de promoção e de divulgação das nossas ilhas no exterior, que terá uma forte expressão na estratégia delineada pela Direção do CNH para os próximos anos e na qual esta revista terá especial destaque. No contexto da Região Autónoma dos Açores, a Atlantis Cup procura anualmente fortalecer as relações humanas, sociais e económica, diversificando percursos e agora adaptando4

Saliento o importante contributo da Associação Regional de Vela dos Açores, dos Clube Navais e das Câmara Municipais, cujo apoio, ao longo destes anos, tem se revelado uma mais-valia, agregando vontades e fortalecendo os laços de amizade que unem estas 9 ilhas. elcome to the Atlantis Cup Regatta - Autonomy Regatta! On behalf of the Clube Naval da Horta, I welcome all the participants and sponsors, as well as all the collective entities that support this important regatta, one of the symbols of our autonomy, which is part of the commemorative program for the 45th anniversary of the Autonomy of the Azores. Year after year, the Atlantis Cup Regatta takes on the challenge and consolidates itself as one of the most important cruising sailing events held in Portugal, but also as an undeniable potential to promote and publicize our islands abroad, which will have a strong expression in the strategy outlined by the Board of the CNH for the coming years and in which this magazine will have special emphasis. In the context of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the Atlantis Cup annually seeks to strengthen human, social and economic relations, diversifying

routes and now adapting to health contingencies. After a year of interregnum, due to the Pandemic crisis, this edition will have a new course, traveling through the islands of the Central Group of the Azores. I would like to highlight the important contribution of the Azores Sailing Association, the Naval Clubs and the City Councils, whose support over the years has proven to be an asset, bringing together wills and strengthening the bonds of friendship that unite these 9 islands. In this symbolic year for our autonomy, we continue to count on the fundamental support of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores Autonomous Region and the Regional Government of the Azores, as well as our sponsors, who understand the dynamics of this event and its role in uniting all the islands of the Azores. I hope this edition will be another success and fair winds and following seas.

ecorridas mais de três décadas da primeira edição da Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia, é com enorme alegria que constato que a atual situação pandémica não fez esmorecer o ânimo daqueles que, com enorme sentido de responsabilidade, asseguram a realização de mais uma Regata nos mares dos Açores. A dedicação e excelência do trabalho que, por todos, ao longo dos últimos anos, foi realizado na manutenção de tão importante evento, merece da minha parte uma palavra de apreço e de profunda gratidão, pois é este trabalho que torna possível a realização de uma das mais significativas regatas que, ao decorrer nos Açores, não deixa de integrar o rol das mais emblemáticas provas do panorama nacional. Os Açores, o seu Mar, a sua Gente, habituados a receber de braços abertos quem os visita, voltam assim ao contacto com embarcações e tripulações das mais diversas proveniências, num sentimento de união que ultrapassa o mero aspeto competitivo, que possibilita a criação de laços de fraternidade e uma saudável partilha de experiências e modos de vida, ou seja, uma aproximação de culturas. Esta Regata é possível porque os Açores são como

são, um território de boa gente, conhecedores da sua história e da sua origem, gente que séculos afora soube lidar com a adversidade geográfica e, sem hesitar, ultrapassar os obstáculos e as inúmeras dificuldades que a permanência nestas ilhas lhes colocou. Como escreveu um dia Nemésio: “Meio milénio de existência sobre tufos vulcânicos, por baixo de nuvens que são asas e de bicharocos que são nuvens…” (Vitorino Nemésio). Os Açores e o seu Mar são a possibilidade de realização de mais uma Regata. O mar não é algo que nos separa, o mar é sim uma ponte de união, é através dele que avançamos, que chegamos onde queremos, o mar faz parte da identidade açoriana, ser açoriano é olhar o mar, ser açoriano é ser mar, permitam-me: “Como as sereias temos uma dupla natureza: Somos de carne e pedra. Os nossos ossos mergulham no mar.” (Vitorino Nemésio). Termino com votos de êxito, o êxito que a Atlantis Cup merece. Faço também votos para que, como até agora, em futuras edições – tenho certeza que serão muitas – os resultados sejam de excelência, só possíveis, fruto da competência de quem vai ao leme e determina o rumo dos trabalhos e acima de tudo dá a conhecer os Açores ao Mundo.

fter more than three decades of the first edition of the Atlantis Cup - Regatta of Autonomy, it is with great joy that I note that the current pandemic situation has not weakened the spirit of those who, with an enormous sense of responsibility, ensure the holding of another Regatta in the seas of the Azores. The dedication and excellence of the work that, for all, over the past years, has been done in maintaining such an important event, deserves from me a word of appreciation and deep gratitude, because it is this work that makes possible the realization of one of the most significant regattas that, by taking place in the Azores, does not fail to integrate the list of the most emblematic events of the national scene. The Azores, its sea, and its people, accustomed to welcoming with open arms those who visit, come back into contact with boats and crews from the most diverse backgrounds, in a feeling of togetherness that goes beyond the mere competitive aspect, which allows the creation of bonds of brotherhood and a healthy sharing of experiences and lifestyles, that is, an approximation of cultures. This Regatta is possible because the Azores are the way they are, a land of good people who know

their history and origin, people who for centuries knew how to deal with geographical adversity and, without hesitation, overcome the obstacles and countless difficulties that sojourn on these islands has brought them. As Nemésio once wrote: “Half a millennium of existence on volcanic tuffs, under clouds that are wings and bugs that are clouds? (Vitorino Nemésio). The Azores and their Sea are the possibility for another Regatta. The sea is not something that separates us, the sea is a bridge of union, it is through it that we move forward, that we get where we want, the sea is part of the Azorean identity, to be Azorean is to look at the sea, to be Azorean is to be sea, allow me: “Like the mermaids we have a double nature: We are flesh and stone. Our bones plunge into the sea.” (Vitorino Nemésio). I end with wishes for success, the success that the Atlantis Cup deserves. I also hope that, as has been the case until now, in future editions - I am sure there will be many - the results will be excellent, only possible because of the competence of those who are at the helm and determine the course of the work and, above all, make the Azores known to the world.

Depois do cancelamento da edição anterior por causa da pandemia, a Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia regressa cheia de força para estreitar a distância entre as nove ilhas dos Açores, num evento que simboliza união e a esperança num tempo novo. Esta edição da Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia decorre num contexto particularmente especial para os Açores, que celebram em setembro o 45.º aniversário da sua Autonomia Regional. Assim, neste ano especial, expresso votos para que esta regata oceânica e este imenso mar que nos rodeia, com todo o seu potencial, simbolizem também a união entre os açorianos, a importância do esforço conjunto, a proximidade e a coesão entre as nossas ilhas. he 32nd Edition of the Atlantis Cup – Autonomy Regatta is, finally, going to happen, colouring again our sea and our marinas with their sails, crowding our seaports with the sounds and smells typical from the interaction and fellowship, so characteristic of this nautical event. After being cancelled last year due to the pandemic, the Atlantis Cup – Autonomy Regatta returns full of strength to narrow down the distance between the nine islands of the Azores, at an event that symbolizes the union and hope of a new time. This edition of the Atlantis Cup – Autonomy Regatta is happening in a particularly special context to the Azores, that are celebrating in september the 45th anniversary of their regional autonomy. Therefore, in this special year, I hope that this oceanic regatta and this vast sea that surrounds us, with all its potential, also symbolizes the alliance among Azoreans, the importance of the mutual effort, the proximity and cohesion between our islands. On behalf of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, that in good time associated to the Atlantis Cup – Autonomy Regatta, I would also like to appreciate and recognize the work developed by the Clube Naval da Horta, their board members, associates and employees, as well as all the entities that are cooperating in this year’s edition. A tradição de terem mantido esta prova ininterruptamente, desde 1988, demonstra resiliência e dedicação por parte dos seus organizadores, contribuindo, deste modo, para a afirmação de um cartaz turístico-desportivo consolidado. O nome da própria prova e o trajeto que a mesma terá neste ano de 2021, apesar de limitado por motivos epidemiológicos, são uma afirmação de Açorianidade e irá permitir a ligação entre todo o grupo central, tendo como ponto de partida a Ilha Terceira, passando pela Ilha Graciosa, tocando a ilha de São Jorge, navegando pelo canal até à Ilha Montanha e terminando no ponto obrigatório para todos os que cruzam o atlântico norte, a Marina da Horta, na Ilha da Faial, num verdadeiro sentido arquipelágico e de aprofundamento da nossa Autonomia. A Atlantis CUP – Regata da Autonomia projeta os Açores no mundo e promove um dos maiores ativos que os Açores têm - o seu Mar. Esta prova une hoje ilhas, comunidades e açorianos, que durante muitos anos viveram de costas voltadas. t is with great pleasure that the Government of the Azores is associated with the organization of the 32nd edition of the Atlantis CUP - Regatta of Autonomy, an event with tradition, that projects the Azores in the world and promotes the sport. The tradition of having kept this race uninterrupted since 1988 shows resilience and dedication on the part of its organizers, thus contributing to the affirmation of a consolidated tourist-sporting event. The name of the race itself and the route it will take in 2021, although limited for epidemiological reasons, are an affirmation of Azoreanness and will allow the connection between the entire central group, starting in Terceira Island, passing through Graciosa Island, touching the island of São Jorge, sailing through the channel to Montanha Island and ending in the mandatory point for all who cross the North Atlantic, the Horta Marina on the island of Faial, in a true sense of archipelagic and deepening of our Autonomy. The Atlantis CUP - Regata da Autonomia projects the Azores to the world and promotes one of the greatest assets the Azores have - its Sea. Today, this race unites islands, communities and Azoreans, who for many years ignored each other. I wish every success to the organization and to all those who will participate in the 32nd edition of the Atlantis CUP - Regatta of Autonomy.

The city of Angra, with its centennial history as a support point for ocean sailing, is proud to welcome you. We hope that the passage of the XXXII edition of this prestigious regatta, in itself a celebration of Azorean autonomy, leaves the best memories, sharpening the desire to return to Terceira in a year when it will be possible to have a better and wider conviviality among all, overcome that the health contingencies that still take away the will to socialize and celebrate. “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia” terá a sua 32.ª edição no ano de 2021 e terá, no seu 1.º momento, uma passagem pela ilha Graciosa. Trata-se de uma regata com um caráter desportivo e competitivo, mas que, ao longo dos anos, tornou-se um símbolo de união pelo mar entre as ilhas açorianas. A ilha Graciosa terá, mais uma vez, todo o gosto em receber tamanha comitiva e que, após um ano de interregno, corra tudo pelo melhor. Atualmente, a Graciosa dispõe de um grande espelho de água, a futura Marina da Barra, onde todos esperamos que brevemente esteja devidamente equipada para se tornar um importante espaço para a náutica de recreio. Da parte do Municipio de Santa Cruz da Graciosa, encontra-se a ser elaborado um projeto de Edifício de Apoio à Marina da Barra, compromisso assumido com o Governo Regional dos Açores.

This is a regatta with a sporting and competitive nature, but that, over the years, has become a symbol of union by sea between the Azorean islands. Graciosa will, once again, have all the pleasure in receiving such an entourage and that, after a year of interregnum, everything goes for the best. Currently, Graciosa has a large mirror of water, the future Marina da Barra, which we all hope will soon be properly equipped to become an important space for recreational boating. On the part of the Municipality of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, a project for a support building for the Marina da Barra is being developed, a commitment made with the Regional Government of the Azores.

Quando por ele velejarem, lembrem-se que estão a entrar na vida deste povo que vos recebe de braços abertos. O Concelho de Velas, “Capital do Queijo”, é um povoado com mais de 500 anos de História. Tem todo um leque de experiências culturais e gastronómicas para oferecer, para além de aventura e atividades náuticas ou terrestres, das quais podem disfrutar! Felicitamos assim a organização do evento, que em muito contribui para a dinamização do desporto náutico e do turismo açoriano e que aproxima cada vez mais as Nossas Ilhas. Bem hajam!

Dear Sailors, The Azores are made of small pieces of land separated by the sea. However, this sea that separates us is the same that unites us. A blue sea full of life that makes us who we are: Azorean. So, whenever you sail in our waters, please remember that you are being welcomed with open arms by this people. Atlantis Cup regressa este ano a unir as ilhas e a estreitar laços entre os açorianos, cuja identidade está umbilicalmente associada ao mar. Independentemente da competitividade que a emblemática Regata possa promover, a iniciativa vem, acima de tudo, celebrar o mar e todas as atividades associadas, bem como evocar a história marítima dos Açores. Numa época difícil como a atual devido à pandemia de Covid-19, a Atlantis Cup é mais um contributo para a retoma da dinamização económica, mas, também, uma excelente oportunidade para projetar turisticamente os diferentes concelhos dos Açores, bem como destinos de eleição para a prática de desportos náuticos. Felicito o Clube Naval da Horta pela organização desta competição e dou as boas-vindas aos participantes de várias partes do Mundo, desejando que tenham uma boa estadia nos Açores e a uma viagem com bons ventos.

com enorme honra que a Madalena está novamente na rota da mais importante regata de vela de cruzeiro realizada no mar açoriano, a Atlantis Cup, que celebra o atlantismo e une pelo mar estas ilhas mágicas, num reforço da nossa autonomia. t is a great honor for Madalena to be, once again, on the route of the most important sailing regatta in the Azores, the Atlantis Cup, that celebrates the Atlantic and unites these magical islands by sea, strengthening our autonomy. Today, through this marine adventure, ancient traditions are relived and the azorean way of life that was described by Vitorino Nemésio is praised on this event that has been successfully promoted by Clube Naval da Horta for over 30 years. aras e caros velejadores A Câmara Municipal da Horta associa-se à realização da 32.ª edição da “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia”, uma prova organizada pelo Clube Naval da Horta, com forte tradição, na ilha do Faial e nos Açores. Assistimos, com entusiasmo, o regresso da prova, depois do seu cancelamento, no ano anterior, fruto da pandemia. Apesar da crise sanitária ainda influenciar o nosso quotidiano é fundamental saber desconfinar, também a nível desportivo. A Atlantis Cup é uma prova que reafirma a nossa coesão territorial e que reforça a nossa vocação náutica. Desejo, por isso, a todos os seus participantes e, em especial à organização, votos dos maiores sucessos. Bons ventos até à cidade-mar da Horta!

ear sailors As Mayor of Horta, we gladly associate to the 32nd edition of the “Atlantis Cup – Autonomy Regatta” organization, an event held by the Clube Naval da Horta, with a strong tradition, on the island of Faial and in the Azores. We watched, with enthusiasm, the return of the race, after its cancellation the previous year, because of the pandemic. Despite the health crisis still influencing our daily lives, it is essential to know how to deconfine, also at a sporting level. The Atlantis Cup is an event that reaffirms our territorial cohesion and reinforces our nautical vocation. Therefore, I wish all its participants and the organization, the greatest successes. Good winds till the city of Horta!
