Esta revista Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia, editada anualmente pelo Clube Naval da Horta, tem a vontade de ser sempre um claro elo de ligação entre os participantes da Regata, os sócios e os desportistas do Clube, bem como um retrato fiel da intensa actividade deste Clube Naval, invariavelmente em constante evolução. Com as mensagens das altas Entidades Oficiais e Presidentes das Câmaras Municipais que apoiam a Atlantis Cup Regata da Autonomia, com as mensagens dos dirigentes associativos envolvidos e com artigos, entrevistas e apontamentos de reportagem de elevado interesse náutico, construímos anualmente uma Revista que é já um marco de referência na vida associativa náutica da região e do país. A Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia assume-se e consolida-se, ano após ano, como uma das mais importantes provas de vela de cruzeiro realizada em Portugal. É, inegavelmente, um fator de promoção e de divulgação das nossas ilhas no exterior e sendo esta Revista desde sempre editada em Português e Inglês, estamos convictos de que tem sido e vai continuar a ser, um sólido instrumento na internacionalização da atividade do CNH. O Clube Naval da Horta orgulha-se por ter conseguido ser um dos impulsionadores

desta Regata, que este ano realiza a sua XXXIII edição. Orgulha-se também, sem qualquer modéstia, por editar há mais de 20 anos esta Revista associada à Atlantis Cup. Reconhecidamente, este feito só foi possível com o total empenho e profissionalismo dos nossos colaboradores, e os demais obreiros desta Revista. Verificar que de ano para ano, os participantes desta regata vão sempre aumentando, alguns pela primeira vez e outros tantos participantes de longa data, é o mote perfeito para nos tentarmos superar a cada edição. Neste ano simbólico, em que o Clube Naval da Horta celebra o seu 75º Aniversário, continuamos a contar com o apoio fundamental da Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores e do Governo Regional dos Açores, bem como dos nossos patrocinadores, que entendem a dinâmica e importância desta prova e o seu papel na união entre todas as ilhas do Açores. elcome to the Atlantis Cup Regatta of Autonomy! This magazine Atlantis Cup - Regatta of Autonomy, published annually by Clube Naval da Horta, has the will to be always a clear link between the participants of the Regatta, the members and sportsmen of the Club, as well as a faithful portrait of the intense activity of this Naval Club, invariably in constant evolution. With the messages of the high Official Entities and Mayors of the City Halls that support the Atlantis Cup - Regatta of Autonomy, with the messages of the associative leaders involved and with articles, interviews and notes of reportage of high nautical interest, we annually build a Magazine that is already a reference in the nautical associative life of the region and of the country. The Atlantis Cup - Regatta of Autonomy is assumed and consolidated, year after year, as one of the most important sailing events held in Portugal. It is, undeniably, a factor of promotion and dissemination of our islands abroad and being this magazine always published in Portuguese and English, we are convinced that it has been and will continue to be, a solid instrument in the internationalization of the CNH activity. Clube Naval da Horta is proud to have managed to be one of the driving forces of this Regatta, which this year holds its XXXIII

edition. It is also proud, without any modesty, for publishing for over 20 years this magazine associated with the Atlantis Cup. Admittedly, this achievement was only possible with the total commitment and professionalism of our collaborators, and the other workers of this Magazine. To verify that from year to year, the participants of this regatta are always increasing, some for the first time and others long-time participants, is the perfect motto to try to surpass ourselves in each edition. In this symbolic year, in which the Horta Naval Club celebrates its 75th anniversary, we continue to rely on the fundamental support of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and the Regional Government of the Azores, as well as our sponsors, who understand the dynamics and importance of this race and its role in uniting all the islands of the Azores. It is also important to highlight the important contribution of the Azores Regional Sailing Association, the Naval Clubs, the City Councils, the Port Authority and the Maritime Authority, whose support over the years has been an asset, adding wills and strengthening the bonds of friendship that unite these 9 islands. Mundo está diferente, a situação pandémica e a recente invasão da Ucrânia pela Federação Russa veio alterar significativamente o equilíbrio mundial. Somos obrigados a assistir, nos dias de hoje, aos maiores atropelos à Democracia, ao Direito Internacional e a um enorme desrespeito pelos Direitos Humanos. No entanto, apesar da angústia que tais acontecimentos nos provocam, algo de bom continua a merecer a nossa atenção. Uma vez mais, vamos ter o prazer de assistir a nova edição da “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia”. A edição de 2022 tem a particularidade de se realizar no ano em que o Clube Naval da Horta comemora 75 anos de existência, 75 anos a proporcionar a centenas de jovens, de menos jovens e simpatizantes, um contacto com os desportos náuticos, que de outra forma não teria sido possível. O empenho demonstrado ao longo dos anos, teve o mérito de incutir em todos aqueles que ao Clube estiveram e estão ligados, o gosto pelo Mar. O Clube Naval da Horta, beneficiou de um quadro político estável, reconhecedor do esforço realizado e da sua importância, bem como de um quadro de igualdade que reconhece nas diferenças a possibilidade efetiva da comunidade. Democracia e Direitos Humanos estão interligados, a primeira tem a sua realização na forma do discurso político, no exercício de cidadania através da participação em eleições livres e na igualdade de direitos. Já os Direitos Humanos só serão eficazes quando alicerçados nas constituições e nos diversos acordos internacionais. Tudo isto para salientar o cariz democrático e respeitador dos Direitos Humanos que caracteriza o nosso país, bem como a autonomia dos Açores que lhe traz o reconhecimento como sujeito político ao nível das relações internacionais. É neste quadro que o Clube Naval da Horta desenvolve o seu trabalho, ajudando a criar laços de amizade e acolhendo no seu seio gentes das mais diversas proveniências, numa salutar competição que, ao não olhar a raças, credos ou culturas, respeita todos por igual. O Clube Naval da Horta é assim um exemplo a seguir. O trabalho realizado ao longo de décadas vem enriquecer de forma assinalável a Região Autónoma dos Açores, Portugal e o Mundo. Desejo os maiores êxitos a esta nova edição, bem como a todas que, sem dúvida, se seguirão.

he pandemic situation and the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia have significantly changed the balance of the world and made it different. Nowadays, we are forced to witness the biggest abuses of democracy, international law and a huge disrespect for human rights. However, despite the distress that such events have caused, positive aspects continue to deserve our attention. Once again, we will have the pleasure of having a new edition of “Atlantis Cup – the Regatta of Autonomy”. The 2022 edition will take place the same year that Clube Naval da Horta celebrates 75 years, providing young people and sympathizers with water sports, until then not possible. The commitment shown over the years has envolved all those who were and are connected and delighted with the club and the sea. Clube Naval da Horta has benefited from a stable political situation, as a consequence of the effort made and its importance, as well as an equality framework. Going back in time, democracy provides a policy of equal recognition by granting an equal status to different people and cultures, which is not happening in Eastern Europe, due to a lack of democratic

culture. Democracy and human rights are linked. The first has its realization in political discourse and the exercise of citizenship through participation in free elections and equal rights. Human rights, on the other hand, will only be effective when based in constitutions and different international agreements. All this emphasizes the democratic nature and respect for human rights that characterizes our country, as well as the autonomy of the Azores that brings its recognition as a political figure in terms of international relationships. It is within this, that the Clube Naval da Horta develops its goals, helping to create bonds of friendship and welcoming people from the most different parts of the world, in a healthy competition, no matter race, creed or culture, respecting everyone equally. Clube Naval da Horta is an example to follow. The activities carried out over the decades have significantly enriched the the Azores, Portugal and the world. I wish the greatest success to this new edition, as well as to all that are yet to come.

É, pois, com especial alegria que vemos o nosso azul voltar a encher-se de velas e os nossos portos rebentarem pelas costuras, com a alegria, a cor e o brilho das muitas embarcações que nos visitam. Por estes dias, estamos todos engalanados e de partida rumo “à 33ª AtlantisCup – Regata da Autonomia”, a prova náutica onde a união e a coesão falam mais alto do que a distância entre as 9 ilhas dos Açores, ou as adversidades que o mar sempre vai trazendo. Os velejadores que nela participam são para nós um exemplo a seguir, rumando na direção certa. Mesmo perante as tempestades mais afoitas, continuam a velejar juntos em busca de um porto seguro, simbolizando a união e esperança num tempo

melhor. Esta 33ª edição da “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia” decorre também num momento muito especial para o seu organizador, o Clube Naval da Horta, que celebra este ano 75 anos de vida. Quero, pois, em nome da Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores, reconhecer e aqui agradecer todo o trabalho desenvolvido pelo Clube Naval da Horta ao longo destas 33 edições da Atlantis Cup, mas sobretudo ao longo destes 75 anos, em que muito fez pelo desenvolvimento dos Açores, ajudando a dar projeção à Região no mundo. Esperamos continuar a contar com o seu exemplo e dinamismo, sobretudo nesse grandioso trabalho de inspirar as gerações mais novas para caminhar nesse mar, que nos une e nos projeta muito para além da nossa pequenez. hey say that there are more tides than sailors but, in these islands of the Azores, the men of the sea are the ones who feed our spirit of good adventure. It is with special happiness that we see our blue filling up with sails again and our seaports bursting at the seams with joy, color and shine with the many vessels that visit us. By these days, we are all decked out and heading towards the “33rd Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia”, the sailing event where the union and the cohesion speak lauder than the distance between the nine islands of the Azores or the adversities that the sea always bring. The sailors that participate in this regatta are for us an example to follow, going in the right direction. Even facing the most dangerous storms, they continue sailing together, looking for a safe sea harbor, symbolizing union and hope for a better time. This 33rd edition of “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Au-

tonomia” also happens in a very special moment for its organizer, Clube Naval da Horta, which celebrates this year its 75th anniversary. Therefore, on behalf of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, I want to recognize and thank all the work developed by Clube Naval da Horta through these 33 editions of the Atlantis Cup, but, above all, through these 75 years, for what it has done for the development of the Azores, helping to project the Region in the world. We hope to continue counting with its example and dynamism, especially in this great work of keeping inspiring the younger generations to path in this sea that unites and projects us far beyond our smallness. s Açores são, em matéria marítima, a melhor expressão do atlantismo de Portugal e da União Europeia e orgulham-se de sempre terem protegido os tesouros da natureza. A 33ª edição da Regata Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia decorrerá nas ilhas de São Miguel, Terceira e Faial, entre os dias 1 e 7 de agosto, com uma competição que, através de caminhos invisíveis traçados no mar, vai ligar cada uma destas ilhas, com o elevado prestígio que já nos habituou, incorporando, este ano, o Campeonato Regional de Vela de Cruzeiro. Esta prova é, com a cooperação do Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada, o Angra Iate Clube e o Clube Náutico de Angra do Heroísmo, o exemplo de que nenhuma ilha está isolada e que todos devemos descobrir e fomentar o sentimento que nos une: A Açorianidade. O Clube Naval da Horta está de parabéns, não só pelas 33 edições desta regata, como também pela comemoração das suas bodas de diamante. Aos que fundaram há 75 anos, aos que mantiveram o trabalho e aos que almejam mais para este clube, o meu obrigado pelo vosso ato livre e voluntário de confiar no azul do horizonte, mesmo contra ventos e marés. he Azores are, in maritime matters, the best expression of the Atlanticism of Portugal and the European Union and are proud of having always protected the treasures of nature. The 33rd edition of the Regatta Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia will take place in the islands of São Miguel, Terceira and Faial, from the 1st to the 7th of August, with a competition that, through invisible paths traced out at sea, will connect each of these islands, with the high prestige that we have become accustomed to, incorporating this year the Regional Sailing Championship. With the cooperation of the Naval Club of Ponta Delgada, the Angra Yacht Club and the Nautical Club of Angra do Heroísmo, this race bears witness to the fact that no island is isolated and that we all must discover and promote the feeling that brings us together: being Azorean. We must congratulate the Naval Club of Horta, not only for the 33 editions of this regatta, but also for the commemoration of its diamond jubilee. To those who founded it 75 years ago, to those who have kept up the work and to those who aim for more for this Club, my special thanks for their free and voluntary act of trusting in the blue of the horizon, even against winds and tides. Neste ano de 2022, o Clube Naval da Horta, clube de excelência desportiva, assinala a 33ª edição desta feliz iniciativa de projeção nacional e internacional, num ano extremamente especial na vida da instituição votada e voltada para o mar: O Clube Naval da Horta comemora 75 anos de existência, as suas bodas de diamante, e surge em 2022 com a motivação regenerada de fazer desta Regata da Autonomia um evento ainda mais inspirador na valorização da nossa condição e dimensão marítima ao promover três regatas Offshore, oceânicas, que ligarão São Miguel Terceira e Faial, e três regatas Inshore, costeiras, como forma de incentivar o convívio em cada uma das ilhas entre as regatas. É esta a virtude da Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia: garantir, através do desporto náutico, a união dos Açores, com uma história marítima de quase 600 anos que se escreve e continua, neste momento, a escrever-se numa “nova viagem autonómica”. Eventos como este divulgam os Açores e as suas ilhas; nove punhados de rocha moldadas por este mar que nos distancia, mas sobretudo o mesmo mar que nos une na nossa condição ilhéu, arquipelágica e autonómica. In this year of 2022, the Clube Naval da Horta, a club of sportive excellence, organizes the 33rd edition of this happy initiative of national and international projection, in an extremely special time in the life of this institution dedicated to the sea: The Clube Naval da Horta celebrates 75 years of existence, its diamond anniversary, and shows itself in 2022 with a renewed motivation to make this Regatta of the Autonomy an even more inspiring event, valuing our maritime condition and dimension by promoting three Offshore, oceanic regattas, which will connect São Miguel, Terceira and Faial, and three Inshore regattas, coastal, as a way of encouraging communication and socialization between the regattas, on each of the islands. This is the virtue of the Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia: to guarantee, through the nautical sports, and sailing in particular, the union of the Azores, which have a maritime written history of almost 600 years that still continues to be written in its way to a “new autonomous journey”. Events like this promote the Azores and its islands; nine shaped rocks, sculptured by this immense sea that distances us, but above all the same sea that unites us as islanders in our archipelagic and autonomous condition. The Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia is a nine islands regatta, because it’s not limited to the participation of three islands of the Azores; it is becoming an increasingly national regatta, by the recognition of its quality and organization; and becoming more international, because this Atlantic challenge is not just about competition, but also about discoveries, and fraternization between those who love the sea: The same sea that the regatta participants, in particular, love, and the sea that all the Azoreans love. E é com grande alegria e satisfação que este Clube retoma esta parceria com a agora denominada Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia e Campeonato Regional de Vela Cruzeiro. Cumprindo o formato das primeiras edições, a regata une as três mais antigas cidades dos Açores ao longo das cerca de 160 milhas náuticas, terminando naquela que representa a maior festa náutica da região, a Semana do Mar. Não poderia ter melhor epílogo. Esta é, sem dúvida, a grande regata dos Açores. Uma regata cheia de história e com muitas histórias para contar ao longo das suas trinta e duas edições. Regata que une, como poucas, as vertentes desportiva e de lazer, proporcionando salutar convívio entre os marinheiros destas ilhas e os de outras paragens. Fundadores da regata, organizações, clubes, velejadores e embarcações, todos ajudaram a construir o legado desta regata e contribuíram para o desenvolvimento da vela cruzeiro nos Açores. he collaboration of the Clube Náutico de Angra do Heroísmo with the organization of the Atlantis Cup was born with the first edition of the regatta, in 1988. And it is with great joy and satisfaction that this Club resumes this partnership with the now called Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta and Regional Championship of Yacht Sailing. Following the format of the first editions, the regatta unites the three oldest cities in the Azores along 160 nautical miles, ending in what represents the biggest nautical festival in the region, the Sea Week. It couldn’t have a better epilogue. This is, without a doubt, the great Azorean regatta. A regatta full of history and with many stories to tell throughout its thirty-two editions. A regatta that unites, like few others, the sporting and leisure aspects, providing a healthy socializing between the sailors of these islands and those from other places. Founders of the regatta, organizations, clubs, sailors, and boats have all helped build the legacy of this regatta and contributed to the development of yacht sailing in the Azores. And as a challenge I ask: when will there be a book about the Atlantis Cup? The Clube Náutico de Angra do Heroísmo wishes all sailors and organization a joyful regatta. With great winds and good moments. With lots of camaraderie and sharing. Na altura o nosso patrocinador era a TAP e o delegado nos Açores era o Terceirense Hélder Gomes, amigo de longa data desde o tempo dos bancos do Liceu.

“Como tudo co Decidimos falar com o Hélder e expusemos-lhe a nossa ideia sugerindo-lhe até o nome que a prova poderia ter “Atlantis Cup”, já que a TAP tinha há muito pouco tempo criado uma companhia de voos charter “Air Atlantis”. O Hélder Gomes disse-nos logo ser uma boa ideia, que a TAP patrocinava a regata, desde que nós organizássemos o evento, ao que respondemos não ser essa a nossa vocação, mas que o Clube Naval da Horta, pela sua experiência e meios disponíveis era a entidade certa para organizar e levar por diante tal projeto. O Hélder Gomes concordou com a nossa sugestão, reuniu com representantes do Clube Naval da Horta e assim, em 1989, aconteceu a primeira de muitas Atlantis CUP.

How it all began

iocleciano Silva and Rui Andrade, at the time owners of the trimaran OLYMPUS, sailing from Faial to Terceira, after the Sea Week of 1988, and talking about the nautical races held during the festivities, thought of an offshore regatta with a longer course connecting the three cities of the archipelago, Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo, and Horta. At the time our sponsor was TAP1 and the delegate in the Azores was Hélder Gomes from Terceira, a long-time friend since high school. We decided to talk to Hélder Gomes and explained our idea to him, even suggesting a name for the race “Atlantis Cup”, since TAP had recently

created a charter company “Air Atlantis”. Hélder Gomes told us it was a good idea, that TAP would sponsor the regatta, as long as we would organize the event, to which we replied that this was not our vocation, but that the Clube Naval da Horta, for its experience and available resources, was the right entity to organize and carry out such a project. Hélder Gomes agreed with our suggestion, met with representatives from Clube Naval da Horta and so, in 1989, the first of many Atlantis CUP took place. 1 - TAP, currently TAP Air Portugal, is the state-owned flag carrier airline of Portugal

uma história curta e breve, como na Horta capital do iatismo dos Açores, o Clube Naval da Horta é e, não poderia deixar de ser, o seu pulmão. É simples, porque se fez único “à vela”, ou seja, clube não oficioso organizou-se com a finalidade exclusiva dos desportos náuticos desde 27 de setembro de 1947, data de aprovação dos seus Estatutos pela Direção Geral de Educação Física, Desportos e Saúde Escolar do Governo da República. Passados 75 anos de existência de uma vida feita de ciclos, do mesmo modo que o trama evolutivo da história das ilhas, ainda aqui o Clube Naval da Horta respira e mantém ativas múltiplas atividades desportivas, recreativas, formativas e competitivas. Sem ele, a Horta Náutica não era o que se reconhece internacionalmente como interposto transatlântico, de receção amistosa e refresco das tripulações de múltiplas línguas que cruzam o imenso mundo atlântico. A Horta debruçada desde sempre sobre o mar, como não deveria recriar-se sobre este clube, conferir entusiasmo aos desportos náuticos que nascem de forma oficiosa ainda no séc. XIX, mas se constituem em organização de iniciativa não governamental de fato com a criação do Clube Naval da Horta. É notável o seu historial num espaço insular tão parco, que para além da iniciativa organizativa de âmbito local, regional e nacional, com destaque para o grande festival náutico da Semana do Mar, o projetou para um patamar cimeiro na receção de regatas internacionais. Neste tempo, é bom sublinhar ou, regressar às origens. Para um território como o Arquipélago dos Açores, o trânsito marítimo foi um meio imprescindível para o ligar ao espaço geo-económico e político do novo modelo de economia-mundo pós revolução industrial, como também o elemento crucial de múltiplas formas de relacionamento sócio-cultural que o moldaram ao longo dos tempos. Os Açores, numa posição geográfica privilegiada, e pelo seu regime de ventos, eram já no séc. XVI e XVII, um centro comercial de importância

considerável, como ponto de escala do retorno da carreira das Índias, das Áfricas, do Brasil a toda a América Espanhola. No séc. XVIII, com ligações mensais de duas, três e mais vezes com Lisboa, mas ainda de forma irregular, circulavam nos dois sentidos diversos tipos de barcos, como as corvetas, fragatas e bergantins. Chegado o séc. XIX, o trafego de mercadorias e pessoas efectua-se já com frequência em chalupas, brigues, escunas ou brigues-escunas, sempre tocando as principais ilhas do Arquipélago, S.Miguel, Terceira e Faial. Iniciadas ligações mais estreitas com a velha aliada, a Inglaterra, ainda em pleno séc. XVIII, com a exportação da laranja e do vinho em barcos daquele pavilhão, os Açores iniciam então um novo ciclo de maior abertura ao mundo, que atinge o seu zénite no século seguinte, como ponto de passagem de um crescente fluxo de trocas inter-oceânicas, cujos centros nevrálgicos se fixam no Norte da América e Europa. Na circunstância da nova tecnologia da navegação a vapor, o Arquipélago dos Açores é assinalado com imprescindível para a rota do Atlântico Norte e, o Porto da Horta inscreve-se pela sua excelência geográfica e pelas condições naturais de uma baía abrigada. Da importância internacional deste porto no contexto da evolução tecnológica verificada no século XIX, merece referência a respeito a anotação que dele se faz na Chart of the World Schowing Distance by de Maritime Canal of Nicaragua

n a short and brief story, as Horta is the capital that breathes yachting in the Azores, the Clube Naval da Horta is, and could not be otherwise, its lungs. It is simple, because it became unique “by sailing”, that is, an unofficial club organized with the exclusive purpose of nautical sports since September the 27th, 1947, date of approval of its statutes by the Direção Geral de Educação Física, Desportos e Saúde Escolar do Governo da República (General Directorate of Physical Education, Sports and School Health of the Government of the Republic). After 75 years of existence of a life made of cycles, in the same way that the evolutionary plot of the islands history, Clube Naval da Horta breathes and keeps active multiple sports, recreational, training and competitive activities. Without it, “Nautical Horta” would not be what is internationally recognized as a transatlantic hub, of friendly reception and refreshment of the crews of multiple languages that cross the immense Atlantic world. Horta has always looked out to sea, how could it not recreate itself on this club, giving enthusiasm to nautical sports that were born in an unofficial way back in the 19th century, but became an organization of non-governmental initiative in fact with the creation of the Clube Naval da Horta. Its history in such a sparse insular space is remarkable, which in addition to the organizing initiative of local, regional, and national scope, with emphasis on the great nautical festival “Sea Week”, projected it to a top level in hosting international regattas. At this time, it is good to underline or, to return to the origins. For a territory like the Azores Archipelago, mar-

(New York 1892), tendo em vista a construção e abertura do istmo do Panamá, o que levaria o Governo Português a considerar classificá-lo como porto franco e, quando posteriormente a nova República do Panamá nomeara cônsules nas maiores ilhas do Arquipélago, dado a sua importância no fluxo marítimo de ou para a Europa. Nesta conjuntura, não é alheio o estabelecimento das companhias do cabo submarino na ilha do Faial a partir de 22 de Agosto de 1893, e como consequência o estabelecimento e trânsito de gente de diversas nacionalidades, que a influenciaram social e culturalmente, quando a família Dabney já lhe dera a devida projeção. Na realidade, o Clube Naval da Horta nasce naturalmente neste berço insular no ano de 1947, baía cosmopolita “tatuada” pelo cruzamento de barcos e gentes de múltiplas origens.

itime transit was an indispensable means of connecting it to the geo-economic and political space of the new post-industrial revolution world-economy model, as well as the crucial element of multiple forms of socio-cultural relationships that have shaped it over time. The Azores, in a privileged geographical position, and because of its wind regime, were already in the XVI and XVII centuries, a commercial center of considerable importance, as a port of call for the return of the Indies career, from Africa, from Brazil to all of Spanish America. In the 18th century, with monthly connections of two, three and more times with Lisbon, but still irregularly, various types of boats circulated in both directions, such as corvettes, frigates and brigantines. When the XIX century arrived, the traffic of goods and people was already made frequently in sloops, brigs, schooners or schooner brigs, always reaching the main islands of the Archipelago, São Miguel, Terceira and Faial. Closer connections with its old ally, England, began in the 18th century, with the export of oranges and wine in ships from England. The Azores then began a new cycle of greater openness to the world, which reached its zenith in the following century, as a transit point for a growing flow of inter-oceanic trade, with its nerve centers in North America and Europe. In the circumstance of the new steam navigation technology, the Azores Archipelago is marked as indispensable to the North Atlantic route and the Horta harbour is inscribed by its geographical excellence and the natural conditions of a sheltered bay. Of the international importance of this port in the context of the technological evolution that took place in the 19th century, it is worth mentioning the annotation made about it in the Chart of the World Showing Distance by de Maritime Canal of Nicaragua (New York 1892), in view of the construction and opening of the Panama Isthmus, which would lead the Portuguese government to consider classifying it as a free port and when the new Republic of Panama later appointed consuls on the Archipelago’s largest islands, given its importance in the maritime flow to and from Europe. The establishment of the submarine cable companies on Faial starting on August 22nd, 1893 was no stranger to this situation. In fact, the Clube Naval da Horta was naturally born in this insular cradle in 1947, a cosmopolitan bay “tattooed” by the crossing of ships and people of multiple origins.

regata Atlantis Cup 2022 ocorre poucas semanas depois da Conferência dos Oceanos das Nações Unidas se ter realizado em Lisboa. Esta conferência, de relevância mundial, permitiu um debate alargado sobre o estado do oceano, envolvendo muitos milhares de delegados de governos, organismos internacionais, instituições científicas, empresas e organizações da sociedade civil, culminando na aprovação da Declaração de Lisboa “O nosso oceano, o nosso futuro, a nossa responsabilidade”. O primeiro passo para se resolver um problema é

reconhecer a sua existência. A ciência demonstra-nos que chegámos a um estado de emergência global. Estamos a enfrentar uma subida do nível das águas do mar e erosão costeira; o oceano está cada vez mais quente, mais ácido e mais poluído; as reservas de peixe estão a ser sobreexploradas, a biodiversidade marinha continua a diminuir, com metade de todos os corais vivos a perderem-se e espécies exóticas e invasoras a ameaçarem a maioria dos ecossistemas. É evidente que desafios globais, como estes, carecem de soluções globais e só a procura incessante de soluções internacionais, com crescente eficácia,

he Atlantis Cup 2022 regatta happens just a few weeks after the United Nations Oceans Conference, organised in Lisbon. This conference, of global importance, promoted a wide-ranging debate on the state of the ocean between many thousands of delegates from governments, international organizations, scientific institutions, companies and non-governmental organizations, and resulted in the adoption of the political declaration “Our ocean, our future, our responsibility”. The first step to solve a problem is to acknowledge its existence. Science shows us that we have reached a global state of emergency. We are facing rising sea levels and coastal erosion, the ocean is getting hotter, more acidic and more polluted, fish stocks are overexploited, marine biodiversity continues to decline, with half of all living corals disappearing and most marine ecosystems being threatened by exotic and invasive species. It is clear that these global challenges require global

solutions and that only a relentless search for international solutions, with real impact, will solve the main problems of the ocean. However, there is much that we can and should do as citizens. On the one hand, collectively, we can exert enormous power through simple decisions about what we eat, what we buy, how we manage our professional activities or how we spend our holidays. That is why it is essential to promote ocean literacy. On the other hand, as voters we should favour politicians who understand the importance of promoting an international agenda for the ocean, and politicians who base their decisions on reliable scientific information. In Portugal, with important contributions from the Azores, we have made strong investments in ocean science, and improved knowledge of marine ecosystems, which enabled us to put forward an ambitious proposal to extend our national jurisdiction to the continental shelf, beyond 200 nautical miles. Indeed, acquiring knowledge is the first stage to

exerting sovereignty over one’s maritime territory. Ocean science has revealed the complex network of links between the atmosphere, the ocean and climate. Similarly, these discoveries point towards potential solutions to some of the most pressing problems we are facing. For example, the restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems can contribute to fighting climate change by fixing carbon, protecting biodiversity and endangered species, and improving fishing stocks, because these ecosystems act as nurseries for species with commercial value. Another example is the revelation of the important role that whales play in carbon sequestration. In the Azores, the autonomous region’s self-government bodies, have worked for decades to protect sensitive marine areas, in close coordination with the University of the Azores and its research centres. The region is home to a rich diversity of marine life forms and ecosystems, especially in what is known as the “deep sea”. These valuable resources, in addition to their intrinsic value, are natural capital that is the basis for developing the so-called blue permitirá resolver os principais problemas deste património comum que é o oceano. Contudo, há muito que todos podemos, e devemos, fazer como cidadãos. Por um lado, coletivamente, temos um enorme poder ao decidirmos o que comemos, o que compramos, de que forma exercemos as nossas profissões ou passamos as nossas férias. É por isso que é essencial promovermos a chamada literacia do oceano. Por outro lado, como eleitores devemos eleger políticos que entendam a importância da definição duma agenda internacional para o oceano, e políticos que tomem as suas decisões com base em informação científica fiável. Portugal, com um determinante contributo dos Açores, tem tido um investimento forte em ciência oceânica, e no melhor conhecimento dos ecossistemas marinhos, que nos permitiu avançar com uma proposta ambiciosa de extensão da nossa jurisdição à plataforma continental, para além das 200 milhas náuticas. Efetivamente, o conhecimento é a primeira forma de exercermos soberania sobre o nosso território marítimo. A ciência oceânica tem revelado a complexa teia de relações que existem entre a atmosfera, o oceano e o clima. Igualmente, estas revelações 28

têm indicado potenciais soluções para alguns dos problemas mais prementes que enfrentamos. Por exemplo, o restauro de ecossistemas marinhos e costeiros pode contribuir para o combate às alterações climáticas, fixando carbono, para a proteção da biodiversidade e de espécies ameaçadas, e para o aumento de recursos pesqueiros, por estes ecossistemas funcionarem como berçários para espécies com valor comercial. Outro exemplo é a descoberta do importante papel que as baleias têm na fixação de carbono, ao longo das suas vidas. Nos Açores, os órgãos de governo próprio da região autónoma têm desenvolvido um importante trabalho ao longo de décadas na proteção de áreas marinhas sensíveis, em estreita articulação a Universidade dos Açores e os seus centros de investigação. A região alberga uma riquíssima diversidade de formas de vida e ecossistemas marinhos, em especial no chamado “mar profundo”. Estes preciosos recursos, para além do seu valor intrínseco, constituem um capital natural que é a base do desenvolvimento da chamada economia azul – um dos pilares estratégicos do futuro crescimento económico dos Açores, de Portugal e da União Europeia. Vários projetos e iniciativas de sucesso na região incluem, por exemplo, o projeto Blue Azores, que é desenvolvido pelo Governo Regional dos Açores com a Fundação Oceano Azul e o Instituto Waitt e que visa a proteção e valorização do capital natural marinho da região, assegurando o envolvimento dos principais atores interessados. Recentemente o Governo Regional dos Açores anunciou a decisão de antecipar para 2023 a meta definida pela Estratégia de Biodiversidade da União Europeia, de classificar áreas protegidas em 30% do mar sob jurisdição dos Estados-Membros até 2030. Pretende-se que metade destas áreas (15% do total) sejam áreas de proteção total. Este é um desígnio importante que nos deve mobilizar a todos, em particular os amantes do mar. A Regata da Autonomia – Atlantis Cup – é um momento propício para refletirmos sobre a urgência de proteger o oceano, desde logo para assegurar que muitas mais gerações de açorianos e visitantes podem continuar a usufruir destes inesquecíveis encontros no pristino mar dos Açores. Bons ventos!

economy – one of the strategic pillars for future economic growth in the Azores, Portugal and the European Union. Successful projects and initiatives in the region include, for instance, the Blue Azores project, which is developed by the Regional Government of the Azores together with the Oceano Azul Foundation and the Waitt Institute, which aims at protecting and valuing the region’s marine natural capital, ensuring the involvement of the main stakeholders. Recently, the Azores Regional Government announced the decision to anticipate to 2023 the goal set by the European Union’s Biodiversity Strategy of protecting 30% of the sea under the jurisdiction of the Member States by 2030. Half of these areas (15% of the total) should become areas under strict protection. This is an important objective that must motivate us all, especially the ocean lovers. The Atlantis Cup regatta is a propitious time to reflect on the urgency of protecting the ocean, as we should ensure that future generations of Azoreans and visitors can continue to enjoy these unforgettable gatherings in the pristine Azores Sea. 75 anos de Clube Naval da Horta (CNH). Que retrato faz deste período? Eu não sou, provavelmente, a pessoa indicada para fazer um retrato destes 75 anos. De qualquer forma, tendo em conta a história do CNH e os relatos que vamos ouvindo de sócios mais antigos, penso que o CNH é um clube estruturado, com uma história muito rica desde os seus primórdios, quer na área náutica quer na área social e na dinâmica que dá à nossa cidade, à nossa ilha e à Região Autónoma dos Açores (RAA). É um clube importante também para a nossa juventude e as nossas crianças, porque trabalhamos para formar melhores homens e mulheres. Numa cidade, que se intitula de cidade de mar, não deixa de ser essencial criar e manter essa ligação à nossa baía, à nossa história e à nossa cidade. 30

75 years of Clube Naval da Horta (CNH). What is your portrait of this period? I am probably not the best one to make a portrait of these 75 years. Anyway, taking into account the history of the CNH and the reports that we hear from older members, I think that the CNH is a structured club, with a very rich history since its beginnings, both in the nautical and social areas and in the dynamics that it gives to our city, to our island and to the Autonomous Region of the Azores (RAA). It is also an important club for our youth and children, because we work to form better men and women. In a city that calls itself a city of the sea, it is essential to create and maintain that connection to our bay, our history, and our city.

A história deste clube faz-se com todos os seus atletas, sócios e voluntários e mantendo essa mesma ligação histórica da ilha ao mar? O CNH é claramente um clube virado para o mar que precisa, na minha modesta opinião, de ser mais acarinhado pelas nossas instituições públicas e até pelo cidadão comum. Embora o CNH se faça com os seus sócios, atletas e voluntários, que são fundamentais na dinâmica, é necessário que se perceba que o CNH recebe, diariamente, solicitações exteriores. O CNH é um clube da sociedade faialense e não só dos seus sócios. É fulcral que haja essa noção. O CNH tem a importância que tem nessa ligação da ilha ao mar, mas isso não se faz só com a boa vontade de quem está mais próximo. Faz-se se com todos, porque o clube efetivamente deixou de ter uma abrangência de 1000 sócios e passou a ter uma abrangência de 15 mil habitantes do Faial e até uma abrangência regional pela relevância que tem na vertente desportiva, social e económica. Como olha para o clube atualmente? O clube sofreu alguma reestruturação nos últimos tempos. O CNH vive da atividade dos seus atletas, no entanto é um clube sólido com um nome José Alberto Tavares Comércio de Produtos Alimentares e Equipamento Hoteleiro, Lda.

The history of this club is made with all its athletes, members, and volunteers, and maintaining that same historical connection of the island to the sea? CNH is clearly a club turned to the sea that needs, in my humble opinion, to be more cherished by our public institutions and even by the common citizen. Although the CNH is made with its members, athletes and volunteers, who are fundamental in its dynamic, it is necessary to realize that the CNH receives, daily, external requests. The CNH is a club of Faial’s society and not only of its members. It is essential to have this notion. The CNH has the importance it has in connecting the island to the sea, but this is not done only with the good will of those who are closest to it. It’s done with everyone, because the club effectively went from having 1,000 members to 15,000 inhabitants of Faial and even to a regional scope due to its relevance in the sports, social, and economic areas.

Does the CNH end up having activity all year round? Yes, because the CNH has more than a dozen sections. We have three sections that work exclusively in training, our youngest athletes are in the local, regional and national competitive board, and end up having a sports season. But outside

Nowadays, how do you see the club ? The club has suffered some restructuring in recent times. CNH lives from the activity of its athletes, however it is a solid club with a name that accompanies from local activity to regional, national and even international with the regattas it has been hosting and that this year are back. It is a club that has a strong position in society and it is also true that the CNH has such a high dimension that it needs, above all, the capacity to continue to be self-financed. But it’s also important that public institutions realize that they have to give more support to the CNH.

a vela de cruzeiro, a pesca desportiva, os botes baleeiros, entre outras. Costumo dizer que o CNH funciona 365 dias por ano o que leva a um desgaste humano e material grande, e não podemos esquecer que o material utilizado no CNH é caro. A competição é importante? Sem dúvida. Devemos enquadrar aqueles que não querem competir, a vertente lúdica, mas também temos de dar condições materiais e humanas àqueles que querem efetivamente competir porque são esses os verdadeiros embaixadores do clube e da ilha fora da RAA. O CNH está mais do que solidificado no arquipélago, mas a verdade é que começamos a trabalhar com muitos atletas que vão a nacionais. Temos feito esforços para manter esse nível competitivo dando-lhes mais condições. E as próprias secções dos mais jovens têm dado o exemplo angariando fundos para comprar os seus próprios materiais, que de certa forma alivia o orçamento do CNH mas também torna estes jovens melhores pessoas.

Is the competition important? Without a doubt. We have to frame those who don’t want to compete, the recreational aspect, but we also have to give material and human conditions to those who really want to compete because they are the true ambassadors of the club and of the island outside of the RAA. The CNH is more than solidified in the archipelago, but the truth is that we are starting to work with many athletes who are going to nationals. We have made efforts to maintain this competitive level by giving them more conditions. And the younger sections themselves have given the example by raising funds to buy their own materials, which in a way relieves the CNH budget but also makes these young people better people.

We have federated competition up to a certain point, and then we have another with our members in sections like sailing, sport fishing, whaling boats, among others. I usually say that the CNH works 365 days a year, which leads to great human and material wear, and we can’t forget that the material used in the CNH is expensive.

What are the Naval Club’s main challenges for the coming years? The CNH’s challenge, and what it has been in recent times, is financial solidification, but the real challenge is its facilities that are 30 years old. With the growth of activity, with the way the island, the other clubs and other associations use the facilities, with the amount of young people that we have throughout the year, it is evident that the CNH needs new facilities. And when I talk about new I’m not talking about new buildings, I’m talking about requalifying the existing one. It is important to realize that we have to look at this building, which is very old and on the water’s edge, with major wear and tear. And this project, it has to be short medium term. Our institutions should and must look at this situation and the CNH must work on this process and also contribute to the solution.

Com o crescimento de atividade, com a forma como a ilha, os outros clubes e outras associações utilizam as instalações, com a quantidade de jovens que temos durante todo o ano, é evidente que o CNH precisa de novas instalações. E quando falo de novas não falo de edifícios novos, falo de requalificar o edifício que existe. É importante que se perceba que devemos olhar para este edifício que tem muito tempo e está à beira da água com um desgaste maior. E este projeto tem de ser a curto médio prazo. As nossas instituições devem e têm de olhar esta situação e o CNH tem de trabalhar nesse processo e também contribuir para a solução.

Magalhães: “Atravessando a Porta do Pacífico”1 e “Desenhando a Porta do Pacífico”2. Desenhando a Porta do Pacífico é uma obra das cartas para o desconhecido onde navegamos, como Magalhães. Com este livro testemunhamos o aperfeiçoamento da geografia. Os seus avanços e recuos durante um século, que mudou a nossa compreensão do mundo, do homem e de Deus. Esta compilação de cartografia mostra-nos os caminhos tortuosos da ciência e do conhecimento, tantas vezes experimentados por tentativa e erro. O estreio de Magalhães foi de facto a porta que permitiu o contato direto entre povos marítimos Atlânticos e Pacíficos durante séculos. Mas mais do que isso, foi a porta para um novo paradigma de perceção do mundo. A relevância conceptual e a beleza geológica e a dimensão mitológica, justificam o detalhe, o zoom cartográfico que este livro nos oferece. A viagem iniciada por Fernão Magalhães a 20 de setembro de 1519 rompeu com o reinado do “ouvir-dizer que” e mostrou que era possível circum-navegar o mundo através do Mar-Oceano. Com este feito, Magalhães, com a sua companha, realizou aquilo que um dos seus mais notáveis e exultantes biógrafos, Laurence Bergreen3, classificou como “a maior viagem marítima alguma vez feita e a mais significativa”. No seu tempo, navegar pelos oceanos era navegar num mundo desconhecido, obscuro de conhecimento, sem horizontes definidos. Nesses tempos, pioneiros e exploratórios, estas incursões oceânicas apenas estavam ao alcance da melhor ciência marítima da época: a Portuguesa! Aliás “a concepção que Fernão de Magalhães tinha do mundo que planeava explorar” era inexata e incerta. A porta intuída do Pacífico estava por provar. A imensidão do Oceano que se abria não estava inicialmente prevista. A travessia, com correntes e recifes desconhecidos, é a grande aventura de descoberta. O feito de Fernão de Magalhães assentou na mais dinâmica e avançada ciência marítima e da navegação existente na época, que estava em pleno desenvolvimento em Portugal, a terra onde o navegador nasceu e se formou. Designing the Pacific Door is a work of charts for the unknown where we navigate, like Magellan. With this book we witness the perfecting of geography. Its advances and retreats during a century that changed our understanding of the world, of man and of God. This compilation of cartography shows us the tortuous paths of science and knowledge, so often tried by trial and error. The Strait of Magellan was indeed the door that allowed direct contact between Atlantic and Pacific maritime peoples for centuries. But more than that, it was the door to a new paradigm of perception of the world. The conceptual relevance and the geological beauty and mythological dimension justify the detail, the cartographic zoom that this book offers us. The voyage begun by Ferdinand Magellan on 20 September 1519 broke with the reign of “hearsay” and showed that it was possible to circumnavigate the world by means of the Sea-Ocean. With this feat, Magellan and his companion accomplished what one of his most remarkable and exultant biographers, Laurence Bergreen3, called “the greatest sea voyage ever made and the most

tor das cartas que tinham inspirado a viagem de Fernão de Magalhães às “Ilhas das Especiarias”, também usufruía deste conhecimento, desenvolvido por um núcleo duro de pensamento e trabalho científico, pioneiro, sem o qual as viagens da Expansão teriam sido impossíveis, como tão bem ilustra Onésimo Teotónio de Almeia na obra, “O Século dos Prodígios”4. Os conhecimentos geográficos anteriores tinham obviamente enormes lacunas, mas a verdade é que Ptolomeu já tinha desenvolvido um sistema de latitudes e longitudes e derivado mapas de um globo curvo. No entanto, foi Magalhães, homem de dados científicos e navegante bem formado, que foi além do ouvi-dizer e que desfez a quadratura do Mundo, deu-nos um mundo redondo e abriu horizontes a novos mundos, novos povos, novas culturas, novas economias, motivado pelas riquezas das “Ilhas das Especiarias” e pela possibilidade de novo comércio, surpreendente aos olhos de hoje, em que um arbusto de sementes aromáticas, o cravinho, “providenciava o incentivo para uma economia mundial emergente”. A viagem de Fernão de Magalhães e Juan Sébastian Elcano, é sem sombra de dúvida a trilha para a globalização, no que esta tem de bom e de mau. Nos relatos mitológicos que circulavam pela Europa, o Mar-Oceano em que o Fernão de Magalhães se aventurou era povoado por monstros fantásticos e terríveis que dilaceravam quem se aventurava nos seus domínios. Monstros que povoavam rotas através do imaginário das mentes humanas, animais gigantes, dragões, unicórnios, deuses e seres semi-humanos, desde logo encimados pelo temível Adamastor. No final, nas palavras de Antonio Pigafetta5 o cronista italiano da viagem de Magalhães, “não havia monstros com rostos em chama a ameaçar os navios: em vez deles, peixes voadores saltavam da água, e não apenas uns poucos, mas tão grande quantidade todos juntos parecia uma ilha no mar”. Sim, era um mundo estranho e rico, que ultrapassava a imaginação, mas diferente do que os proto-historiadores e inventores de mitos especulavam na idade Média. Onésimo Teotónio Almeida 2018. significant”. In his time, to sail the oceans was to navigate an unknown world, obscure of knowledge, with no defined horizons. In those pioneering and exploratory times, these oceanic incursions were only within the reach of the best maritime science of the time: the Portuguese! In fact, “Ferdinand Magellan’s conception of the world he planned to explore” was inexact and uncertain. The intuited door to the Pacific was unproven. The immensity of the ocean that was opening up was not initially foreseen. The crossing, with unknown currents and reefs, is the great adventure of discovery. Ferdinand Magellan’s achievement was based on the most dynamic and advanced maritime science and navigation available at the time, which was in full development in Portugal, the land where the navigator was born and educated. Francisco Serrão, the author of the charts that had inspired the voyage of Ferdinand Magellan to the “Spice Islands”, also benefited from this knowledge, developed by a hard core of thought and scientific work, pioneer, without which the voyages of the Expansion would have been impossible, as Onésimo Teotónio de Almeida illustrates so well in his work, “The Century of the Prodigies”4. Previous geographical knowledge obviously had huge gaps, but the truth is that Ptolemy had already developed a system of latitudes and longitudes and derived maps of a curved globe. However, it was Magellan, a man of scientific data and a well-trained navigator, who went beyond hearsay and undid the squaring of the world, gave us a round world and opened horizons to new worlds, new peoples, new cultures, new economies, motivated by the riches of the “Spice Islands” and the possibility of new trade, surprising to today’s eyes, where an aromatic seed shrub, cloves, “provided the incentive for an emerging world economy”. The voyage of Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano is without a doubt the trail to globalisation, in all its good and bad aspects. In the mythological accounts that circulated in Europe, the Sea-Ocean in which Ferdinand Magellan ventured was populated by fantastic and terrible monsters that tore apart those who ventured into their domains. Monsters that populated routes through the human mind’s imagination, giant animals, dragons, unicorns, gods and semi-human beings, topped by the fearsome Adamastor. In the end, in the words of Antonio Pigafetta5 the Italian chronicler of Magellan’s voyage, “there were no monsters with flaming faces threatening the ships: instead of them, flying fish jumped out of the water,

Contudo, hoje sabemos que o Mar/Oceano também já não é um domínio prístino e desconhecido, tal como observado por Magalhães e por tantos outros que lhe seguiram as rotas. Muito mudou nestes 500 anos de história. O oceano do século XXI está mais explorado e contaminado e por isso mais empobrecido, mais fragilizado, mais vulnerável à ação global do homem. O oceano de hoje está mais mais ácido, mais quente e expandido, as correntes estão a mudar em força, direção e calor, o oxigénio está a rarear em extensões cada vez maiores e a biodiversidade e abundância de vida a diminuir. Ilhas e nações do Pacífico em risco de desaparecerem pela emergente subida do nível do mar. As notícias que surgem diariamente não são boas. As ilhas de peixes voadores descritas por Antonio Pigafetta, como parecendo ilhas, passaram a grandes manchas de lixo e plástico. Vemos o lixo de uma sociedade de desperdício acumular-se em ilhas flutuantes e a entrar na dieta de muitos organismos e no fim na nossa. Como as comemorações dos 500 anos da viagem de circum-navegação se estendem até Outubro de 2022 é pertinente e oportuno alinhá-la com um conjunto de outras iniciativas que, à escala internacional, se associam à temática do conhecimento e desenvolvimento sustentável do oceano, e em particular com a Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre o Oceano que decorreu em Lisboa

and not just a few, but such a great number all together looked like an island in the sea”. Yes, it was a strange and rich world beyond imagination, but different from what proto-historians and myth-makers speculated in the Middle Ages. However, today we know that the Sea/Ocean is no longer a pristine and unknown domain either, as observed by Magellan and so many others who followed his routes. Much has changed in these 500 years of history. The 21st century ocean is more exploited and contaminated and therefore more impoverished, more fragile, more vulnerable to global human action. Today’s ocean is more acidic, warmer and expanded, currents are changing in strength, direction and heat, oxygen is becoming scarcer over ever greater expanses and the biodiversity and abundance of life diminishing. Pacific islands and nations at risk of disappearing by emerging sea level rise. The news emerging daily are not good. The islands of flying fish described by Antonio Pigafetta, as looking like islands, have turned to large patches of rubbish and plastic. We see the rubbish of a wasteful society piling up on floating islands and entering the diets of many organisms and ultimately our own. As the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the voyage of circumnavigation extend until October 2022, it is pertinent and appropriate to

Nesta conferência discutiu-se o caminho para transformar em ação o Objetivo de Desenvolvimento Sustentável 14: Proteger o Oceano, reforçando e assegurando os compromissos voluntários dos Estados membros da ONU. A urgência de atingir os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável não abrandou. Pelo contrário, ela reforça-se e torna-se mais evidente a cada momento. A projeção internacional das comemorações, associada ao reconhecimento da importância da primeira viagem de circum-navegação e à notoriedade da “marca Magalhães” constitui-se como motivo inegável para a afirmação externa de um Portugal inovador, empreendedor, tolerante, atrativo, cosmopolita e empenhado na agenda de um Oceano saudável e produtivo.

align it with a set of other initiatives that, on an international scale, are associated with the theme of knowledge and sustainable development of the Ocean, and in particular with the United Nations Conference on the Ocean held in Lisbon between 27th June and July 1st 2022. This conference discussed the way to transform into action the Sustainable Development Goal 14: Protect the Ocean, reinforcing and ensuring the voluntary commitments of the UN Member States. The urgency to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals has not slowed down. On the contrary, it is reinforced and becomes more evident with each passing moment. The international projection of the celebrations, associated with the recognition of the importance of the first circumnavigation voyage and the notoriety of the “Magellan brand”, is an undeniable reason for the external affirmation of an innovative, enterprising, tolerant, attractive, cosmopolitan Portugal committed to the agenda of a healthy and productive Ocean.

Miguel e Terceira, sendo que Angra do Heroísmo foi a primeira cidade portuguesa classificada como património mundial da humanidade pela Unesco. A receção e participação em regatas internacionais e nacionais, bem como a organização de inúmeras a nível regional, tem sido uma das atividades do Clube Naval da Horta, que também em muito tem contribuído para a promoção e coesão dos Açores, como a Atlantis Cup, que este ano terá o mesmo percurso que o da primeira edição, ligando as três mais populosas ilhas. he Azores are part of one of the few regions that today constitute the last in Europe in terms of potential in offering true quality tourism. Its historical importance in the world, the existence of natural resources and quality of life that make it possible to satisfy the desire for rest and contact with nature will increasingly become privileged reasons for the growth of tourism, which should continue to be progressive but balanced, and therefore associated with quality of life, preservation of natural and cultural heritage, and the relationship between man and his environment. Besides the diversity of its natural beauty and landscape, such as lakes, volcanoes, endemic flora and fauna integrating its vast natural heritage, the Azores have been developing and promoting tourism products existing in all the islands, mainly

segunda maior em comprimento, a cinco e vinte milhas, respetivamente, da cidade da Horta, sede do parlamento regional, constituindo a zona de onde se tem uma maior e melhor perceção de região arquipelágica. Na baía do seu porto localiza-se a marina nacional onde maior número de iates aportam anualmente – cerca de mil e quinhentos em 2018 -, maioritariamente em travessia atlântica, tornando-a na mais colorida do mundo por, “supersticiosamente”, os seus tripulantes cumprirem a tradição efetuando uma alusiva pintura. Dos miradouros da Espalamaca e dos Montes da Guia e Carneiro, sobranceiros à cidade, para além do maravilhoso panorama que presenteiam, destacam-se as imponentes igrejas, o conjunto de edifícios utilizados pelas companhias de cabos telegráficos alemãs, americanas e inglesas, que durante décadas permitiram as ligações com as principais capitais mundiais, e os seus belos jardins. A beleza da paisagem do vulcão dos Capelinhos ocorrido em 1957/58 torna-a deveras paradisíaca, com um moderno centro de interpretação subterrâneo cuja visita possibilita autêntico conhecimento das distintas fases da atividade sísmica. Igualmente deslumbrante é a vista sobre a profunda e ampla Caldeira com dois mil metros de diâmetro e quatrocentos metros de profundidade e considerada um pequeno tesouro botânico, onde alguma dessa vegetação poderá ser observada

On a cultural level, besides the different museums, the valuable built heritage of religious, military and historical monuments that exist in all the islands with special relevance in S. Miguel and Terceira, where Angra do Heroísmo was the first Portuguese city classified as world heritage by Unesco. The hosting and participation in international and national regattas, as well as the organization of numerous regional regattas, has been one of the activities of the Clube Naval da Horta, which has also contributed greatly to the promotion and cohesion of the Azores, such as the Atlantis Cup, which this year will have the same course as the first edition, connecting the three most populated islands. Faial is one of the vertices of the Triangle Islands formed by Pico, where the majestic and highest mountain in Portugal is located, and S. Jorge, the second longest in length, five and twenty miles, respectively, from the city of Horta, where the regional parliament is located, being the area from where one has a greater and better perception of the archipelagic region. In the bay of its port is located the national marina where the largest number of yachts dock annually about one thousand five hundred in 2018 -, mostly in Atlantic crossings, making it the most colorful in the world for, “superstitiously”, its crew members fulfill the tradition by making an allusive painting.

No museu da Horta é fascinante a coleção única de trabalhos em miolo de figueira, enquanto no mundialmente conhecido Café Sport, antes de tomar o famoso “Gin do Peter” poderá visitar o museu de “Scrimshaw”, com deslumbrantes gravações e baixos relevos em dentes de cachalote, resultantes daquela que outrora foi uma das atividades económicas de sobrevivência de muitos açorianos. Na antiga e agora “fábrica da baleia-museu” no Porto Pim, é possível observar o equipamento e respetivo processo de transformação então utilizados. Sejam bem vindos! Bons ventos! Agradável estadia!

From the viewpoints of Espalamaca and the hills of Guia and Carneiro, overlooking the city, in addition to the wonderful panorama they present, stand out the impressive churches, the set of buildings used by German, American and British telegraph cable companies, which for decades allowed the connections with the main world capitals, and their beautiful gardens. The beauty of the landscape of the Capelinhos volcano that occurred in 1957/58 makes it truly paradisiacal, with a modern underground interpretation center whose visit enables authentic knowledge of the distinct phases of seismic activity. Equally dazzling is the view over the deep and wide Caldeira with two thousand meters in diameter and four hundred meters deep and considered a small botanical treasure, where some of that vegetation can be observed in the Botanical Garden. At the Horta Museum the unique collection of fig tree kernels is fascinating, while at the world-renowned Café Sport, before drinking the famous “Peter’s Gin” you can visit the “Scrimshaw Museum”, with dazzling engravings and bas-reliefs in sperm whale teeth, resulting from what was once one of the survival economic activities of many Azoreans. In the former and now “whale-museum factory” in Porto Pim, it is possible to observe the equipment and respective transformation process used then. Be welcome! Good winds! Pleasant stay!

regata originalmente chamava-se Vannes - Les Açores - Vannes, criada em 1990. Um certo Armando Castro veio a Morbihan para alinhar à largada desta regata, e de lá nasceu uma amizade entre o Armando e os concorrentes da Classe Mini. Em 2006, a cidade de Les Sables d’Olonne, incentivada pelo presidente da Classe Mini, Antoine Grau, e do 1º deputado da cidade de Les Sables d’Olonne, Yves Roucher, decidiram relançar esta regata. Armando Castro respondeu imediatamente ao apelo e graças ao apoio dos governantes dos Açores, da Câmara Municipal da Horta e do Clube Naval da Horta, foi lançada a 1ª edição de Les Sables - Les Açores - Les Sables. 69 Minis inscreveram-se para fazer esta regata offshore em

he regatta was originally called Vannes - Les Açores - Vannes, created in 1990. A certain Armando Castro came to Morbihan to line up at the start of this regatta, and from there a friendship was born between Armando and the Mini Class competitors. In 2006, the town of Les Sables d’Olonne, encouraged by the President of the Classe Mini, Antoine Grau, and the 1st deputy of the town of Les Sables d’Olonne, Yves Roucher, decided to relaunch this regatta. Armando Castro immediately responded to the appeal and thanks to the support of the Azores government, the Horta City Hall, and the Horta Naval Club, the 1st edition of Les Sables Les Açores - Les Sables was launched. 69 Minis signed up for this offshore regatta in small 6.50 meter boats, and it has become a classic of the Mini circuit. In 2022 we are in the 8th edition! This event has become mythical and all sailors dream of doing this very technical course and getting to know the inhabitants of the Azores and especially Faial, whose kindness is a value that sailors seek.

Mini-boats but with maximum performance. Although the size of the boats may seem small, these sailboats are very safe to sail, they are equipped with buoyancy reserves that make them practically unsinkable, and their sail area allows them to reach very fast speeds downwind, with large spinnakers of around 110m2 and speeds of over 18 knots!

Mini-barcos mas com performance máxima. Embora o tamanho dos barcos possa parecer pequeno, estes veleiros são muito seguros a navegar, estão dotados com reservas de flutuabilidade que os tornam praticamente inafundáveis, e a sua área vélica permite-lhes atingir velocidades muito rápidas a favor do vento, com grandes spinnakers de

cerca de 110m2 e velocidades superiores a 18 nós! Mas os concorrentes não podem participar na prova de qualquer forma, têm de fazer qualificações, ou seja, 800 milhas náuticas em regata e 1000 milhas em solitário. Existem duas categorias na regata. A categoria protótipo, em que os barcos são construídos à unidade por encomenda, com a possibilidade de utilizarem materiais de alta tecnologia, tais como telas de carbono. Têm um mastro mais alto do que os barcos de série, um calado superior e são bem mais leves. Na categoria de série, os barcos têm de ser feitos num molde específico e num mínimo de dez exemplares utilizando para tal, resina de poliéster. Nos últimos anos, as formas do casco evoluíram muito, sendo agora as proas muito mais arredondadas e com maior volume, o que permite aos Minis passar mais facilmente nas ondas. A particularidade da regata Les Sables - Les Açores - Les Sables é que ao longo do percurso os concorrentes enfrentam diversos sistemas meteorológicos. Têm de lidar com eles da melhor maneira possível, e as escolhas de rota são muito importantes, especialmente a passagem do Cabo Finisterra e, claro, a chegada ao arquipélago dos Açores. Este ano a regata registou o número máximo de inscritos, com 72 Minis a largar de Les Sables em direção à Horta.

But competitors can’t take part in the race just anyhow, they have to do qualifications, i.e. 800 nautical miles in racing and 1000 miles in solo. There are two categories in the regatta. The prototype category, in which the boats are built to order, with the possibility of using high-tech materials, such as carbon fibers. They have a taller mast than series boats, a higher draft, and are much lighter. In the series category, the boats have to be made in a specific mold and a minimum of ten using polyester resin. In recent years, the hull shapes have evolved a lot, and now the bows are much more rounded and have more volume, which allows the Minis to pass more easily through the waves. The special thing about the Les Sables - Les Açores - Les Sables regatta is that along the way the competitors face several weather systems. They have to deal with them in the best possible way, and route choices are very important, especially the passage of Cape Finisterre and, of course, the arrival in the Azores archipelago. This year the regatta registered the maximum number of entries, with 72 Minis sailing from Les Sables in the direction of Horta.

alar, pensar, idealizar, organizar ou até mesmo operacionalizar mais uma edição da “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia”, é inevitavelmente recordar o Dr. Luís Carlos Decq Mota. Contextualizando, importa relembrar que a ideia desta Regata surge em 1987, em plena Semana do Mar, numa jantarada no “Frank” (Capelo), que juntou à mesma mesa um grupo de amigos de diferentes ilhas, que entre outras coisas, tinham em comum a paixão pela Vela de Cruzeiro. O primeiro objetivo era o de organizar algo que permitisse repetir estes encontros, e que levasse os velejadores do Faial, até à Terceira e São Miguel. Rapidamente a estratégia ficou definida: o CNH encarregar-se-ia da organização, cabendo aos companheiros da Terceira e de São Miguel arran-

o talk, think, idealize, organize or even operationalize another edition of the “Atlantis Cup - Regatta of Autonomy”, is inevitably to remember M.D. Luís Carlos Decq Mota. In context, it is important to remember that the idea of this Regatta arose in 1987, during the Sea Week, during a dinner at “Frank” (Capelo), which brought together at the same table a group of friends from different islands, who, among other things, had in common a passion for sailing. The first objective was to organize something to repeat these meetings and take sailors from Faial to Terceira and São Miguel. Soon the strategy was defined: the CNH would be in charge of the organization, while the members from Terceira and São Miguel would find sponsors for the event. The enthusiasm was so great that one year later the first “Atlantis Cup” Regatta was held on a course that linked Ponta Delgada to Horta, passing

jar os patrocinadores para o evento. O entusiasmo era tanto, que um ano depois realiza-se a primeira Regata “Atlantis Cup”, num percurso que uniu Ponta Delgada à Horta, passando pela ilha Terceira, e que desde lá até então, mantém na sua génese o convívio entre todos os participantes. Para o Dr. Luís Decq Mota, a competição não deveria nunca sobrepor-se ao convívio, nem tão pouco ser um fator dissuasor deste espírito de companheirismo. O humanismo que desde sempre o caracterizou, o seu sorriso contagiante, a sua solidariedade para com todos, fosse na sua atividade enquanto médico, fosse na sua participação cívica, ou em todos os relacionamentos que facilmente estabelecia, sem dúvida que são um enorme legado, que cabe a todos nós cidadãos e aos participantes desta Regata, honrar. No total, participou em 26 edições desta Regata, invariavelmente acompanhado pela sua mulher Maria da Graça Freitas Decq Mota, estreando-se com o veleiro “Teimoso”, numa outra edição com o “Tamarin”, mas a maioria das edições foram feitas com o seu veleiro “Air Mail”. Este veleiro foi por si adquirido em 1992, sobre o qual sempre dizia estar ligado afetivamente, tendo-o acompa-

through the island of Terceira, and which since then has maintained at its core the conviviality among all participants. For M.D. Luís Decq Mota, competition should never take precedence over conviviality, nor should it be a deterrent to this spirit of companionship. The humanism that has always characterized him, his contagious smile, his solidarity with everyone, whether in his activity as a medical doctor, in his civic participation, or in all the relationships he easily established, are undoubtedly an enormous legacy that it is up to all of us citizens and to the participants of this Regatta to honor. In total he participated in 26 editions of this Regatta, invariably accompanied by his wife Maria da Graça Freitas Decq Mota, making his debut with the sailboat “Teimoso”, in another edition with “Tamarin”, but most editions were made with his sailboat “Air Mail”. He bought this sailboat in 1992, and always claimed to have an emotional attachment to it, having accompanied it until the last day of his life. It was also in the “Air Mail” that in 2002 he won the Atlantis Cup Regatta, even though his competitors were much more competitive sailboats, which gave him enormous pleasure. For him the “Air Mail” was a family school, where his daughters and all his nephews passed through. This is how he passed from generation to generation his love of sailing, having taught most of his family to sail in his sailboat, where everyone enjoyed sailing. For him, sailing was a school of life, and life on board was a unique opportunity to strengthen relationships and deepen his knowledge of others, his greatest challenge being to find the balance needed to live together with six or more people on a 12-meter boat.

nhado até ao seu último dia de vida. Foi também no “Air Mail” que em 2002 venceu a Regata Atlantis Cup, mesmo tendo como concorrentes veleiros muito mais competitivos, o que lhe deu enorme gozo. Para ele o “Air Mail” era uma escola familiar, por onde passaram as suas filhas e todos os seus sobrinhos. Foi assim que foi passando de geração em geração o “seu bichinho” pela vela, tendo ensinado grande parte da família a praticar Vela de Cruzeiro no seu veleiro, onde todos gostavam de navegar. Para ele a Vela era uma escola de vida, e a vida a bordo era uma oportunidade única de estreitar relações e aprofundar o conhecimento sobre o outro, tendo como maior desafio encontrar o equilíbrio necessário à convivência de seis ou mais pessoas, num barco de 12 metros. Enquanto médico sobejamente reconhecido pela sua dedicação e entrega ao serviço de obstetrícia, maioritariamente desenvolvida na ilha do Faial, era comum fazer o paralelismo entre a sua atividade profissional e a sua paixão pela Vela, pois em ambas as atividades, na sua perspetiva, do ponto de vista emocional, era capaz de usufruir de momentos de ‘relax’ profundo e de momentos de enorme tensão. A presente edição da “Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia”, é a 1ª edição desde o seu falecimento, mas todas elas serão sempre uma homenagem a este homem do mar, que muito do seu tempo dedicou ao Clube Naval da Horta, tendo inclusivamente assumido a sua direção por 2 mandatos consecutivos e mantido sempre a sua presença nos órgãos sociais deste clube. A sua integridade, a sua lealdade, a leveza da sua presença e a forma desprendida com que sempre serviu tudo e todos, deixa um vazio que dificilmente algum dia poderá ser preenchido. Resta-nos por isso, trabalhar para que o seu desejo de ver esta Regata cada vez mais valorizada, seja integralmente cumprido.

As a medical doctor widely recognized for his dedication and commitment to the obstetrics service, mostly developed on the island of Faial, it was common to draw parallels between his professional activity and his passion for sailing, because in both activities, from his perspective, from an emotional point of view, he was able to enjoy moments of deep relaxation and moments of enormous tension. The present edition of the “Atlantis Cup - Regatta of Autonomy”, is the 1st edition since his death, but all of them will always be a tribute to this man of the sea, who dedicated much of his time to the Clube Naval da Horta, and even assumed its leadership for two consecutive mandates and always maintained his presence in the social bodies of this club. His integrity, his loyalty, the lightness of his presence and the unselfish way he always served everyone and everything, leaves a void that will hardly ever be filled. We can therefore only work so that his desire to see this Regatta increasingly valued is fully realized.
