sta Revista, editada anualmente pelo Clube Naval da Horta, tem a vontade de ser sempre um claro elo de ligação entre os participantes na Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia, os sócios e os desportistas do Clube e a actividade, cultura e acção intensa deste Clube Naval em permanente evolução. São muitos os que fazem e viabilizam esta Revista, procurando todos que ela seja interessante e valiosa pelo seu conteúdo e apresentação gráfica. Com as mensagens das altas Entidades Oficiais e Presidentes das Câmaras Municipais que apoiam

a Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia, com as mensagens dos dirigentes associativos envolvidos e com os artigos, entrevistas e apontamentos de reportagem de elevado interesse náutico, construímos anualmente uma Revista que é já um marco de referência na vida associativa náutica da Região e do País. Sendo a Revista desde sempre editada em Português e Inglês é absolutamente certo que tem sido e vai continuar a ser um sólido instrumento na internacionalização da actividade do CNH. O Clube Naval da Horta orgulha-se por ter conseguido implantar esta Regata que este ano realiza a sua XXIX edição. Orgulha-se por editar há mais de 20 anos esta Revista associada à Atlantis Cup. Orgulha-se por ter conseguido sempre excelentes colaboradores e excelentes obreiros da Revista. Orgulha-se por ter sempre na Regata barcos

que já participaram e barcos que vêm pela primeira vez. Registo aqui um sentido agradecimento a todos os participantes, organizadores, apoiantes e patrocinadores institucionais e privados, autoridade portuária, autoridade marítima, anunciantes da Revista e demais colaboradores neste evento marcante que é a Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia e em toda esta imensa actividade que o CNH desenvolve. Intensificar, de forma ampla, a prática dos desportos náuticos e promover os Açores no exterior são sempre os nossos objectivos principais.

his magazine, published annually by Clube Naval da Horta (CNH) has the desire to be a clear link between the participants in the Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta, the members, sportsmen and sportswomen of the Club and the activity, culture and intense action of this Naval Club in permanent evolution. There are many who make feasible this Magazine, all pursuing the goal to make it interesting and valuable for its content and graphic presentation. With the messages of the High Official Entities and Mayors of the Town Councils that support the Atlantis Cup, with the messages of the associative leaders involved and the articles, interviews and reports of high nautical interest, we have built annually a Magazine that is already a milestone in the nautical associative life of the Region and the Country. Being the magazine always edited in Portuguese and English, is absolutely certain that it has been and will continue to be, a solid instrument in the internationalization of CNHâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activity. Clube Naval da Horta is proud to have been able to implement this Regatta that this year holds its XXIX

edition. It is proud to have edited for more than 20 years this Magazine associated with the Atlantis Cup. It is proud to have always obtained excellent collaborators and excellent staff to create the Magazine. It is proud to have always in the Regatta boats that have already participated and boats that come for the first time. I would like to thank all the participants, organizers, supporters and sponsors, the port authority, the maritime authority, the magazineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advertisers and other collaborators in this event that is the Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta, and in all the immense activity that CNH develops. Intensifying the practice of nautical sports in general and promoting the Azores abroad are always our main objectives.

Representante da República para a Região Autónoma dos Açores The Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of the Azores

elejando desde há quase três décadas entre as nove ilhas dos Açores, a Regata da Autonomia assume uma função importante na aproximação entre todos os açorianos e na abertura dos Açores ao mundo. O seu atlantismo, entre a Europa e a América, dá-lhe um simbolismo de união entre os povos, precisamente onde a ligação dos cabos submarinos já teve esse papel. Podemos dizer que a Atlantis Cup tem nos seus “genes” os bravos marinheiros que enfrentaram o Adamastor, agora não à procura de novos reinos e especiarias, mas sim como forma de manter viva uma saga marítima que se traduz numa das mais importantes regatas de vela de cruzeiro em Portugal. Os meus parabéns ao Clube Naval da Horta por ser o criador e o elo de ligação entre a Atlantis Cup -Regata da Autonomia e a grande festa da Semana do Mar, na cidade mais oceânica dos Açores, que, com o cosmopolitismo da sua Marina, junta no mesmo abraço os portugueses das ilhas, do continente e da Diáspora e povos distantes que demandam a Horta nesta altura, numa comunhão que leva os Açores cada vez mais longe. Aqui deixo os meus votos para que mais uma vez a Atlantis Cup seja um grande sucesso.

Pedro Catarino Sailing for nearly three decades between the nine islands of the Azores, the Autonomy Regatta plays an important role in bringing together all the Azoreans and opening the Azores to the world. Its Atlanticism, between Europe and America, gives it a symbolism of union between peoples, precisely where the connection of the submarine cables already had that role. We can say that the Atlantis Cup has in its “genes” the brave sailors who faced the Adamastor, now not looking for new kingdoms and spices, but rather as a way to keep alive a maritime saga that translates into one of the most important cruise sailing regattas in Portugal. My congratulations to Clube Naval da Horta for being the mentor and the link between the Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta and the great Sea Week party, in the most oceanic city of the Azores which, with the cosmopolitanism of its Marina, joins in the same embrace the Portuguese of the islands, the mainland and the Diaspora and distant people who demands Horta at this time in a communion that takes the Azores further. Here I leave my votes so that once again the Atlantis Cup be a great success.

mia! No ano passado velejámos pelas ilhas das Flores e do Corvo. Este novo formato da regata, leva-nos este ano ao Grupo Oriental do Arquipélago, às ilhas de Santa Maria e São Miguel. Os audazes participantes sairão da ilha de Santa Maria, para Vila Franca do Campo, em São Miguel, sendo a primeira vez que esta cidade acolhe a Atlantis Cup. De Vila Franca do Campo parte para Ponta Delgada e de seguida para a Horta, cidade mar, que acolhe a chegada dos velejadores. É o espírito de união, que tão bem caracteriza o povo açoriano, que está igualmente bem patente na Regata da Autonomia numa união, pelo mar, das nove ilhas açorianas. Esse imenso mar que nos rodeia, e que assume tão grande importância no ser-se Açoriano, que está sempre presente nas nossas vidas e que embala o nosso íntimo. Tranquilizador em dias estivais, quando também necessitamos de descanso, desinquieto, como temos de ser, por tantas vezes nas nossas vidas. A Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores, mais uma vez, e com muito orgulho, associa-se à Regata da Autonomia. Uma palavra de apreço ao Clube Naval da Horta, pela organização exemplar e pela projeção das nossas ilhas e do nosso mar além- fronteiras. Ana Luísa Luís Another year, another new page in the unfolding of this noble event that is Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta! Last year, we sailed along the islands of Flores and Corvo. This year, the new format of the regatta takes us to the Eastern Group of the Archipelago, to the islands of Santa Maria and São Miguel. The daring participants will leave the island of Santa Maria heading to Vila Franca do Campo, in São Miguel, being the first time this city hosts Atlantis Cup. Then, it sets sail from Vila Franca do Campo to Ponta Delgada and finally to Horta sea town, which welcomes the arrival of the sailors. The spirit of unity, which so well characterizes the Azorean people, is equally well evident in the Autonomy Regatta in a union by the sea of the nine Azorean islands. This immense sea that surrounds us, which assumes such great importance in being Azorean and which is always present in our lives cradling our depth. Calming on summer days, when we also need rest, restlessness, as we should be, so many times in our lives. The Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, once again, proudly joins the Autonomy Regatta. A word of appreciation to Clube Naval da Horta for the exemplary organization and the projection of our islands and our sea beyond borders. A well-being to all and may the winds of unity be on your side!

com muito gosto que o Governo dos Açores se associa, uma vez mais, à Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia, um dos maiores eventos náuticos do país e que, também por essa razão, é motivo de orgulho para a Região Autónoma dos Açores. Ao longo das suas várias edições, a Atlantis Cup tem, entre outros, o mérito de dar uma grande visibilidade ao Mar dos Açores, assumindo-se, assim, como um elo de ligação e de aproximação entre as várias parcelas que compõem o nosso arquipélago. No fundo, esta regata oceânica constitui um dos bons exemplos do aproveitamento das potencialidades do nosso Mar, numa comunhão perfeita entre as componentes desportiva, ambiental e social, a que se junta a relevante promoção da Região no exterior, graças ao estatuto que a Atlantis Cup foi consolidando ao longo dos anos. Manifesto, assim, ao Clube Naval da Horta, bem como às restantes entidades que colaboram na sua organização, o reconhecimento por, mais uma vez, darem vida a uma prova que está em linha com a estratégia de consolidação e promoção dos Açores com uma Região de natureza ativa. A todos os participantes na XXIX Atlantis Cup, faço votos de uma excelente prova entre as nossas ilhas, sempre com bons ventos rumo a um porto seguro.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro It is with great pleasure that the Government of the Azores joins, once again, the Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta, one of the most relevant nautical events in the country that is also a source of pride for the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Over the course of several editions, the Atlantis Cup has had the merit of enhancing the visibility of the Azores, among other things, thus being a vital link in connecting and bringing closer the various parts that make up our archipelago. Essentially, this ocean race is a good example of harnessing the potential of our sea. It combines the sports, environmental and social components in a perfect symbiosis with the relevant promotion of the Region abroad, thanks to the status that the Atlantis Cup has been consolidating over the years. Hence, I would like to express my recognition to Clube Naval da Horta, as well as to other entities that collaborated in its organisation, for preparing, once again, an event that is in line with the consolidation and promotion strategy of the Azores as an active nature Region. Atlantis Cup – Regata da Autonomia constitui a maior prova oceânica de vela e cruzeiro dos Açores e é considerada uma das mais importantes de Portugal. Esta prova é uma mais-valia para a promoção dos Açores enquanto destino turístico e este ano, na sua 29ª edição, centra-se no Grupo Oriental, sendo Vila Franca do Campo uma das suas etapas oficiais. É com muito gosto que acolhemos uma das etapas na nossa vila quinhentista intimamente ligada ao mar, seja pelas suas idílicas praias e pelo nosso magnífico Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, ou ainda, a termo de curiosidade, pela sua ligação à história das grandes batalhas navais portuguesas, como foi a Batalha Naval de Vila Franca do Campo em 1582. Esta é também uma prova que une a nossas ilhas e os nossos habitantes, sendo, para além de uma competição, uma forma de aproximação e contato com pessoas de outras partes do mundo. Ricardo Rodrigues The Atlantis Cup – Autonomy Regatta is the largest ocean sailing and cruising event in the Azores and is considered one of the most important in Portugal. This event adds value for the promotion of the Azores as a tourist destination and this year, in its 29th edition, focuses on the Eastern Group, being Vila Franca do Campo one of its official stages. It is with great pleasure that we welcome one of the stages in our 16th century village intimately connected to the sea, either by its idyllic beaches or by our magnificent Islet of Vila Franca do Campo, or, by curiosity, by its connection to the history of the great Portuguese naval battles, as it was with the Naval Battle of Vila Franca do Campo in 1582. This is also a competition that unites our islands and our inhabitants, being, besides a competition, a form of approach and contact with people from other parts of the world. Lastly, I want to congratulate Clube Naval da Horta for the initiative and for all those who strive and dedicate themselves to this event, which, with each passing year, grows and gains more notoriety. Na sua 29.ª edição, a Atlantis Cup é uma regata de referência nos Açores, que tem sabido crescer, envolver clubes e skippers e percorrer diferentes percursos, transformando-se, cada vez mais, não só na Regata da Autonomia, mas sobretudo num evento cultural, histórico e social de relevo, que reforça a ligação dos faialenses com a sua Semana do Mar e com o Festival Náutico a que se assiste na baía. Por essa razão, felicito o Clube Naval da Horta e a Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores pela organização e pela dinâmica imposta na realização desta regata oceânica, fora de portas. At its 29th edition, the Atlantis Cup is a reference regatta at the Azores, having known how to grow, to involve clubs and skippers and run different courses. It’s not only the “Autonomy Regatta” but also a cultural, historical and social event as well, that reinforces the connection of the Faial people to its Sea Week and to the nautical festival that runs out at the bay. For that, I congratulate Horta’s Nautical Club and the Azorean Parliament for the organization and dynamics putted into this oceanic regatta, outdoors. To all participants, I hope you can find good winds that will lead you to this cosmopolite bay that its waiting you decked out, in fully Sea Week, at One of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. mais uma vez com muito gosto e empenho que o Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada está envolvido nesta Atlantis Cup-Regata da Autonomia. Ao longo dos anos esta Regata, que se quer cada vez mais participada, por velejadores Açorianos e outros do exterior que venham participar, tem conquistado uma posição de relevo no panorama do iatismo Português. E o que se pretende é uma solidificação deste papel ao mesmo tempo que aos participantes é proporcionado para alem dum interessante panorama das diversas ilhas dos Açores, um memorável convívio entre eles e também com os Açorianos que de braços abertos lhes recebem nos vários portos e clubes Navais. O Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada, até pelo peso histórico, (fundado em 1901 é o mais antigo dos Açores em qualquer modalidade), congratula-se com a organização e impulso que o Clube Naval da Horta tem dado a esta prova sabendo congregar as vontades e esforços dos diversos clubes envolvidos. Along the years this regatta, that we wish to be more and more participated by local and exterior sailors, has conquered a leading position at the panorama of the Portuguese yachting. And what is intended is a solidification of this position as well going on showing the beauty of our islands and a memorable gathering with the Azoreans that receive the regatta at the ports of call and yacht clubs. tlantis Cup de novo na Rota de Santa Maria. Tão importante Regata regressa este ano à Ilha mais Oriental do Arquipélago dos Açores, fazendo assim o verdadeiro sentido da Regata da Autonomia. É com enorme orgulho que o Clube Naval de Santa Maria e as gentes da nossa ilha recebem, de novo, este evento considerado por muitos como o principal na “Vela de Cruzeiro” nos Açores. Faz parte dos nossos genes a hospitalidade e o bem receber todos os que nos visitam. O mar que tantas vezes nos separa é, também, o mar que nestas alturas nos une. Santa Maria, nos últimos anos, com a sua agradável Marina tem sido porto de abrigo de milhares de velejadores internacionais e Regionais que se deslumbram com as belezas da ilha e com as suas gentes, ao ponto de muitos deles fixarem cá residência e cativarem outros Velejadores a fazerem o mesmo. Por vezes são pequenos gestos, simpáticos e genuínos, que tão bem sabemos fazer, que colocam os Açores no mapa do “mundo da Vela”. O Clube Naval de Santa Maria deseja a todos os Velejadores bons ventos e as maiores felicidades. Cá vos esperamos com a mesma disponibilidade e alegria de sempre.

So important Regatta returns this year to the most Eastern Island of the Archipelago of the Azores, thus making the true sense of the Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta. It is with great pride that Clube Naval de Santa Maria and the people of our island receive, once again, this event considered by many to be the main event in “cruise sailing” in the Azores. Hospitality its part of our genes and we warmth welcome all those who visit us. The sea that so often separates us is also the sea that now unites us. Santa Maria, in recent years, with its pleasant Marina has been a haven for thousands of international and regional sailors who are dazzled by the beauties of the island and its people, to the point that many of them fix their residence and captivate other sailors to do the same. Sometimes there are small, friendly and genuine gestures, which we know how to do, that put the Azores on the “Sailing World” map. ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo será novamente cenário de um grande evento, pelo que esperamos que a sua evocação às origens dos deportos náuticos nesta vila, e que determinou a fundação deste clube naval, se reflita num enorme sucesso da 29.ª edição da Atlantis Cup / Regata da Autonomia. É para o Clube Naval de Vila Franca do Campo, seus atletas e simpatizantes, um privilégio poder colaborar com vista a tornar este sucesso uma realidade. Votos de uma boa estadia e saudações náuticas a todos os participantes e colaboradores.

Paulo Pacheco Costa The islet of Vila Franca do Campo will once again be the scene of a major event, and we hope that its evocation of the origins of nautical sports in this village, and that has determined the foundation of this naval club, is reflected in a huge success of the 29th edition of Atlantis Cup / Autonomy Regatta. It is a privilege for the Vila Franca do Campo Naval Club, its athletes and supporters, to collaborate in order to make this success a reality. gosto pela Vela fez Rui Dowling embarcar no Projeto “Vela Para Todos - Faial Sem Limites”, uma iniciativa conjunta da Associação de Pais e Amigos dos Deficientes da Ilha do Faial (APADIF) e do Clube Naval da Horta (CNH), que arrancou no fim de 2011, visando “a inclusão de todos na prática da Vela, destruindo barreiras e preconceitos que ainda possam existir, dando o seu contributo para a construção de uma sociedade mais justa e aberta à diferença”. O convite a Rui Dowling partiu do Treinador da Escola de Vela do Clube Naval da Horta, João Duarte, cuja experiência e garantias cativaram este velejador especial, assim como os restantes da Classe Access (Vela Adaptada para pessoas com mobilidade reduzida). Após um primeiro treino, que primou pela ausência de vento, Rui estava convertido à prática e daí até às provas e aos títulos tem sido sempre a somar. O maior vício deste jovem é o cinema de documentário, tendo começado em 2004 – altura em que comprou a sua primeira câmara – a fazer cinema amador. “Onde está toda a gente”, “Mãos que endireitam”, “Filomena”, “Memórias baleeiras - Calheta de Nesquim, “O Oleiro” e “Fayal: Retrato de um Passado”(este último vai ser apresentado brevemente no Auditório da Biblioteca Pública da Horta), são trabalhos feitos até hoje. Desde que conheceu o ioga e a meditação que este faialense passou a encarar a vida de maneira diferente, percebendo que pode divertir-se sem recorrer aos copos ou ao seu conteúdo. Rui evita passar por lugares onde more a depressão e, embora seja um ombro amigo, prefere não saber confidências difíceis. Na agradável conversa mantida e no subsequente passeio pela Marina da Horta, deu para perceber que o Rui é uma excelente companhia, que sabe ouvir e apreender. É simpático, educado e autónomo, mas avisa, sem inibições, que se precisar de ajuda, pede. O mar permite-lhe “desligar a ficha”, apreciar a cidade de outra perspetiva e inspirar-se para os seus documentários. “Tive brincadeiras arrojadas, como jogar futebol com os meus amigos de rua” Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: A Vela já fazia parte da tua vida? Rui Dowling: Já tinha andado no mar, mas nunca como velejador. Tinha reticências em velejar devido à minha doença, que se chama osteogénese imperfeita e cujo problema mais gravante é a fragilidade dos ossos. Apesar de ter outras implicações, esta é a que me condiciona mais a vida. A doença tem vários graus, sendo que estou no médio, o que já é sinónimo de alguma gravidade.

The pleasure for sailing made Rui Dowling take board into the “Vela Para Todos - Faial Sem Limites” Project, a partner initiative of the Faial Island Association of Parents and Friends of the Disabled (APADIF) and Clube Naval da Horta (CNH), which started at the end of 2011, aiming “the inclusion of everyone in the practice of sailing, eliminating barriers and prejudices that may still exist, contributing for building a more fair society, opened to difference”. The invitation to Rui Dowling came from Clube Naval da Horta Sailing School Coach, João Duarte, whose experience and guarantees captivated this special sailor, as well as the rest of the Access Class (Adaptive Sailing). After a first training, marked by the lack of wind, Rui was converted to sailing practice and since then, he´s always been adding titles until tests. The biggest fixation of this young man is

the documentary film and this started in 2004 - when he bought his first camera - to make amateur cinema. “Onde está toda a gente”, “Mãos que endireitam”, “Filomena”, “Memórias baleeiras - Calheta de Nesquim, “O Oleiro” e “Fayal: Retrato de um Passado” (this last one will be soon presented in the Auditorium of Horta Library) are his works done until today. Ever since he knew yoga and meditation, this Faialense was able to see life in a different perspective, realizing that he can have fun without drinking. Rui avoids going to places where depression lives and although he´s a friendly shoulder, he prefers not knowing hard confessions. The car gives him independence and this is important, but he has become spared, also thinking about travels, since he prefers to run the world instead investing in something material. And, as for investments, he´s equally cautious about women. Although he already had some relationships, currently he´s in a free or better, liberal regime, because he argues that a good friendship is better than a relationship that only gives him headaches. In the pleasant conversation held and the following walk through the Marina of Horta, we noticed that Rui is an excellent company, who knows how to listen and learn. He´s friendly, polite and autonomous, but he warns without inhibitions, that if he needs help, he asks. The sea allows him to “turn off the plug”, enjoying the city in a different perspective and inspiring him for his documentaries. “I’ve had bold games, like playing football with my street friends”

CNH Press Office: Sailing was already part of your life? Rui Dowling: I´ve already had been at sea, but never as a sailor. I was reluctant to sail because of my disease, called Osteogenesis imperfecta, which the most severe problem is the brittleness of bones. Although it has other implications, this is what conditions my life the most. The disease has several types

Já nasci assim e trata-se de uma questão genética, mas a verdade é que a minha irmã é saudável e não tenho conhecimento de casos na família. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Estás particularmente sujeito a fraturas? Rui Dowling: Sim, e já tive algumas de certa gravidade. Como tal, preciso de ter cuidado e tenho um pouco de dor crónica. Tudo isto me levou a ponderar muito bem antes de começar a praticar desporto a sério, pois era algo novo na minha vida e que poderia ser arriscado. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Quando eras criança não brincavas com os teus amigos? Rui Dowling: Claro, e fiz algumas maluqueiras! Praticava desporto com os meus amigos de rua e até fiz brincadeiras mais arrojadas – como jogar futebol – que provocaram certas quedas com gravidade, tendo ido parar ao hospital. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Atualmente andas de cadeira de rodas. Foi sempre assim? Rui Dowling: Nasci em 1981 e andei até 1991. A partir daí comecei a usar canadianas e após 1998 passei para a cadeira de rodas. Quando andava de canadianas, cheguei a jogar futebol e a fazer maluqueiras. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Tudo isto exigiu muito trabalho e dedicação dos teus pais? Rui Dowling: Os meus pais tiveram uma vida penosa comigo. Esta situação não afeta só o doente, mas todos os que estão à volta. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Agora já não há segredos neste desporto? Rui Dowling: Já sei gerir as condições e

quando está demasiado vento não arrisco, além de que o João dá plena liberdade para desistir. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: O Treinador é uma peça fundamental neste xadrez? Rui Dowling: Sem dúvida! O João Duarte é um grande Treinador e uma excelente pessoa, com muita sensibilidade. Claro que é exigente enquanto treinador e, por vezes, stressa-se connosco, mas para termos resultados é preciso exigência. E a partir de agora vai ser a doer com os treinos, pois vamos participar no Campeonato Nacional que se realiza em Cascais, de 30 de Junho a 2 de Julho próximos. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Como é que encaras a competição? Rui Dowling: Tão a sério que me leva a esquecer a minha situação. E por isso já sofri pequenas lesões, mas nada de especial. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Ser Campeão Nacional, em 2016, em Viana do Castelo, teve um sabor especial? Rui Dowling: Especialíssimo! Foi o ponto mais alto no meu percurso de velejador de competição. Foi óptimo, porque não estava à espera. Éramos 12 ou 13 participantes e como estava um bocadinho de vento, fiquei receoso, mas correu bem. Estamos a falar de rio, que nunca cria grande ondulação. Já no mar, a ondulação torna-se complicada. Não ia com muitas expectativas devido ao vento e à minha situação. A partir dos 12/13 nós ja começa a ser complicado para mim, e então quando vai aos 15... porque quer se queira quer não, a verdade é que o vento abana um bocadinho e como eu sou extremamente leve, pode haver uma refrega mais perigosa para mim. Por isso, prefiro o rio, por não haver ondulação, embora com a corrente também se torne complicado, mas o facto é que me correu bem. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Mas já houve outras vitórias? Rui Dowling: No ano de 2015, em Portimão, consegui um 3º lugar, e em 2014, no

and I´m in the middle one, which is already synonymous of some gravity. I was born this way and it´s a genetic issue, but the truth is that my sister is healthy and I´ve no knowledge of cases in my family. CNH Press Office: Are you particularly subject to fractures? Rui Dowling: Yes, and I´ve had some serious ones. Being so, I need to be careful and I´ve some chronic pain. All this led me to think very carefully before I started to practice sports seriously, because it was something new in my life and it could be risky. CNH Press Office: When you were a kid, didn´t you play with your friends? Rui Dowling: Of course, and I did some crazy ones! I practiced sports with my street friends and even played bolder games - like football - that caused me serious falls, leading me to the hospital. CNH Press Office: You´re currently wheelchair-bound. It was always like this? Rui Dowling: I was born in 1981 and I walked until 1991. From there I started to use crutches and after 1998, I went to the wheelchair. When I walked with crutches I even played football and did crazy stuff. CNH Press Office: All this required a lot of work and dedication from your parents? Rui Dowling: My parents had a hard life with me. This disease not only affects the patient, but all those who´s around. CNH Press Office: Now there´s no secrets in this sport? Rui Dowling: I already know how to manage the weather conditions and when it´s too windy I don´t risk, besides that João gives me full freedom to give up. CNH Press Office: Is the Coach a key piece in this chess? Rui Dowling: Without a doubt! João Duarte is a great Coach and an awesome human being, highly sensitive. Of course he´s demanding as a coach and sometimes he stresses with us, but in order to achieve re-

sults, requirement it´s needed. And from now on, it will be hard trainings, because we´ll be in the National Championship that takes place in Cascais, from June 30th to July 2nd. CNH Press Office: How do you see the competition? Rui Dowling: So seriously that it takes me to forget my condition. And for that, I`ve suffered small injuries, but nothing serious. CNH Press Office: Being a National Champion in 2016, in Viana do Castelo, had a special taste? Rui Dowling: Very special! It was the highest point in my competition sailing journey. It was great, because I wasn´t expecting it. We were twelve or thirteen and I was afraid because it was a bit windy, but it went well. We’re talking about river, at sea the riffle becomes harder. I didn´t have high expectations due to the wind and my condition. From 12/13 knots it starts to be difficult for me, and then when it goes to 15 knots...because whether you want it or not, the truth is that the wind shakes a little and as I´m extremely light weight, there can be a more dangerous fight for me. So I prefer the river, because there´s no ripple, although with the current it also becomes tricky, but the fact is that I ran well. CNH Press Office: But have been there other victories? Rui Dowling: In 2015 in Portimão, I´ve got a 3rd place, and in 2014, in Faial, the year that Clube Naval da Horta organized the National Championship, I was in the 4th place. I didn’t get the 3rd place by close, but victories are won by the millimeter. CNH Press Office: Does Sailing awake your most adventurous side?

Faial, ano em que o Clube Naval da Horta organizou o Campeonato Nacional, fiquei em 4º lugar. Por pouco não consegui ficar em 3º, mas as vitórias são conquistadas ao milímetro. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: A Vela faz despertar o teu lado mais aventureiro? Rui Dowling: Pois... Sempre fui um pouco aventureiro desde pequeno e às vezes quando estou lá fora e está mais mexido penso: o que é que eu estou a fazer aqui? Mas acho que no desporto como em tudo na vida, é importante sentir a adrenalina e é aquele receio – em demasia não – que dá pica ao que fazemos. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Há muitas pessoas nas tuas condições que pratiquem Vela? Rui Dowling: Não. Estamos a falar de uma doença rara, e nos Açores apenas há mais 3 ou 4 pessoas na mesma situação. E é pelo facto de eu ser portador desta doença, que foi tão especial o título de Campeão Nacional. No Continente português não há qualquer velejador com esta doença, e mesmo a nível mundial, sou um caso muito raro de alguém que faz Vela Adaptada e tem osteogénese imperfeita. É preciso ver que na Secundária praticamente nunca fiz Educação Física. Andei a ver os outros. O professor João Castro tinha os Bilros e o Xadrez, com que me entretinha. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: No Clube Naval da Horta os velejadores da Classe Access são adversários mas, acima de tudo, amigos... Rui Dowling: A competição é saudável. Somos amigos e a competição está num nível muito bom. Fui Campeão Nacional no ano passado, mas tanto o Lício como o Libério também poderiam ter sido. O nosso nível aqui é todo por igual. Uma das razões que contribuiu para que o Campeonato realizado no Faial tenha corrido bem, foi precisamente o facto de estarmos os 3 num nível muito alto, fazendo com

que a vitória estivesse ao alcance de qualquer um. Embora tenhamos uma visão de conjunto – sobretudo em provas fora de casa – a verdade é que cada um está a fazer por si e a dar o seu melhor. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Uma vez que o Clube Naval da Horta é o único nos Açores que dispõe de Vela Adaptada, se não fosse os campeonatos nacionais não havia competição? Rui Dowling: É a nossa realidade tendo em conta que o Clube Naval da Horta foi e continua a ser o único nos Açores capaz desta dinâmica, revelando o seu pioneirismo na Vela Adaptada e noutras situações. Infelizmente não temos concorrência no Arquipélago, mas sem dúvida que os campeonatos realizados no Continente nos permitem evoluir muito. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: A Semana do Mar também constitui uma competição interessante? Rui Dowling: Para ser sincero, a Semana do Mar nunca me corre bem, sobretudo devido às

Rui Dowling: Yeah... I´ve always been a bit adventurous since I was little and sometimes when I’m out there and the sea it’s a bit rough I think: what am I doing here? But I think that in sports, as in everything in life, it´s important to feel the adrenaline and it´s that fear - but not too much - that gives excitement to what we do. CNH Press Office: Are there many people in your condition who practices sailing? Rui Dowling: No. We´re talking about a rare disease and in the Azores there are only three or four people in the same condition. And it´s because I carry this disease,

that it was so special to win the National Championship title. In the Portuguese mainland and even worldwide, there´s no sailor with this disease, I´m a rare case of someone who practice Adaptive Sail and has Osteogenesis imperfecta. It´s important to say that in High School I´ve almost never practiced Physical Education. I’ve watched the other students. João Castro teacher had the “Bilros” and the Chess, with which I entertained myself. CNH Press Office: In Clube Naval da Horta Access Class sailors are opponents but, above all, friends... Rui Dowling: Competition is healthy. We´re friends and the competition it’s in a good level. I was a National Champion last year, but both Licio and Libério could´ve been. Our level here is alike. One of the reasons that made the Faial Championship goes well was the fact that the three of us are in a very high level, making that victory was within anyone reach. Although we´ve an overall vision - especially in home-away events - the truth is that everyone´s doing it for themselves and doing their best. CNH Press Office: Since Clube Naval da Horta was and still the only Club in the Azores that has Adaptive Sailing, if it wasn´t for the National Championship was there any competition? Rui Dowling: It´s our reality taking into account that Clube Naval da Horta was and remains the only one in the Azores capable of this dynamic, revealing its pioneering in Adaptive Sailing and in other situations. Unfortunately we don´t have competition in the Archipelago, but there´s no doubt that the championships held in Portuguese mainland, allows us to evolve a lot. CNH Press Office: Is Sea Week also an interesting competition? Rui Dowling: To be honest, Sea Week never goes well for me, mainly due to the weather conditions. In August, maybe because of the sea tides, the sea is already weird, so I think if the Nautical Festival was in July, it would be better. “Sailing changed my life” CNH Press Office: Is it hard to learn how to sail? Rui Dowling: Sailing requires a little bit of sensitivity. The person who has the ability to understand, at the right time, the side of the wind and it´s jumps, takes advantage. Everyone knows how to sail, but has in any competitive sport, the details are what counts. CNH Press Office: What changes did Sailing bring? Rui Dowling: Sailing changed my life. It has improved the

condições climatéricas. Em Agosto, talvez devido às lavadias, o mar já está esquisito, por isso acho que se o Festival Náutico fosse em Julho, seria melhor. “A Vela mudou a minha vida” Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: É difícil aprender a velejar? Rui Dowling: Andar à vela exige um bocadinho de sensibilidade. A pessoa que tem capacidade para perceber, na altura certa, de que lado está o vento e os saltos de vento, ganha vantagem. Toda a gente sabe velejar, mas os pormenores é que contam em qualquer desporto de competição. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Que mudanças trouxe a Vela? Rui Dowling: A Vela mudou a minha vida. Melhorou a parte física e a auto-estima, pois diz-me que sou capaz de fazer algo com qualidade. Este desporto também me permitiu fazer amigos, desenvolver a camaradagem e realizar viagens. A Vela funciona como uma espécie de fisioterapia, sobretudo mental. Quando estou no mar, esqueço tudo! A Vela tem essa vantagem. Tento aproveitar a paisagem e olhar para o Faial como nunca olhei. O último documentário que fiz (“Fayal: Retrato do Passado”, que vai ser apresentado brevemente), foi inspirado na forma como olhei, a partir do mar, para as igrejas Matriz, do Carmo e de São Francisco. São construções que sobressaem no casario da cidade e isso fez logo um click na minha mente. “O CNH teve um papel muito importante na integração da pessoa com deficiência” Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Qual a importância do CNH? Rui Dowling: Tenho um carinho muito especial pelo Clube Naval da Horta, porque me deu a possibilidade de fazer Vela a sério e sempre com muita segurança. É preciso enaltecer esta questão e é algo que eu nunca esqueço.

O CNH tem uma função muito mais importante do que aquilo que possa imaginar. Apostou na Vela para pessoas com deficiência no Faial e teve um papel importantíssimo na sua integração no mundo do desporto. Todos devemos estar gratos por isso e é um local onde me sinto muitíssimo bem, rodeado de amigos. É de máxima justeza sublinhar o papel do Técnico Nilzo Fialho (APADIF), uma pessoa fundamental neste Projecto e nas nossas deslocações, além dos Dirigentes e Voluntários do Clube. Este reconhecimento é extensivo àquelas entidades ou associações como a Academia do Bacalhau, que foram os primeiros a apoiar a Vela Adaptada, oferecendo um barco, oferta que já tive oportunidade de agradecer publicamente, no decorrer de um jantar. Sinto-me completamente acarinhado por esta instituição, que defino como impecável. Sabemos que há dificuldades, mas nota-se que toda a gente faz o seu melhor. Se há problemas em todas as casas (até nas nossas!), esta não é excepção, mas o CNH envolve uma família muito grande, sendo necessário muita experiência e dedicação. “A capacidade organizativa do CNH é reconhecida a nível nacional” Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Como é que os clubes nacionais olham para nós? Rui Dowling: Tenho me apercebido de que eles já nos conhecem. A organização do Campeonato Nacional de 2014, da responsabilidade do CNH, foi excelente. O pessoal do Continente adorou e ainda hoje fala nisso. Foi uma organização muito trabalhosa, mas o mérito foi reconhecido fora de portas. E, a propósito, devo usar de honestidade e confessar que lá fora ainda nunca encontrei uma organização como a do CNH, em 2014. O Clube de Viana do Castelo tem melhores infraestruturas do que o nosso – o que nesta altura também não é muito difícil – mas em termos de know-how e treinadores,

physical part and my self-esteem, because it tells me that I´m able of doing something with quality. This sport also allowed me to make friends, develop camaraderie and travel. Sailing works as a kind of physiotherapy, especially a mental one. When I’m at sea, I forget everything! Sailing has this advantage. I try to enjoy the landscape and look at Faial like never before. The last documentary film I´ve made (“Fayal: Retrato do Passado” to be presented soon), was inspired by the way I looked at Matriz, Carmo and São Francisco churches from the sea. They´re buildings that stand out in the town houses and this just made a click in my mind. CNH Press Office: How important is CNH? Rui Dowling: I´ve a very special affection for Clube Naval da Horta, because it allowed me to practice Sailing seriously and always with high security. We must extol this particular detail and this is something that I never forget. The CNH has a much more important role than you can ever imagine. Bet on Sailing for people with disabilities in Faial and played a very important role in their integration into the world of sports. Everyone should be grateful for this and it´s a place where I feel very good, surrounded by friends. It´s highly fair to underline Nilzo Fialho (APADIF) Technician role, a key person in this Project and also in our travels, besides the leaders and volunteers of the Club. This recognition is extended to those entities or associations such as the “Academia do Bacalhau” who were the first to support the Adap-

tive Sailing, offering a boat, an offer that I´ve already had the opportunity to express my gratitude in public, during a dinner. I feel entirely cherished by this institution, which I define as flawless. We know there are strains, but we notice that everyone does their best. If there´re problems in every house (even ours!), this is no exception, but the CNH involves a large family, requiring a lot of experience and dedication. “The organizational ability of the CNH is recognized at a national level” CNH Press Office: How do the national clubs look at us? Rui Dowling: I´ve realized that they already know us. The 2014 National Championship organization, under the CNH responsibility, was great. Mainland people loved it and still talk about it until today. It was a very demanding organization, but the merit was recognized out of the doors. And, by the way, I must be honest and confess that outside I´ve never met an organization like the one held by the CNH in 2014. The Viana do Castelo Club has better infrastructures than ours - which at this time it´s also not very difficult - but in terms of know-how and coaches, we are ahead. CNH Press Office: How do your family and friends look at Rui the sailor? Rui Dowling: They ask questions, show interest in knowing more about this sport, show support and pride. I remember that an uncle from Pico called me when I was National Champion and many people congratulated me.

Rui Dowling: Fazem perguntas, demonstram interesse em saber mais sobre este desporto, manifestam apoio e orgulho. Recordo que um tio meu do Pico me telefonou quando fui Campeão Nacional, e muitas pessoas me deram os parabéns. A minha família apoiou-me sempre, mas chamando a atenção para os cuidados a ter. Apesar de andarmos todos na Vela, o meu problema é muito diferente do do Lício e do do Libério, que são pessoas saudáveis, mas que sofreram uma lesão durante a vida. Dentro do possível, também sou saudável, mas tenho um problema completamente diferente do deles. Tenho outros cuidados com que eles não precisam de se preocupar, como por exemplo, evitar o vento forte lá fora ou os impactos que o barco possa ter. Além disso, quando chove, as lentes de contacto incomodam-me. Por outro lado, e em relação a eles, talvez eu ganhe um pouco no que concerne à mobilidade, pois mexo os pés e dou umas passadas agarrado. “A força dos meus pais tornou-me mais forte” Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Percebe-se que tu lidas bem com a tua doença e que és uma pessoa serena. Foi sempre assim? Rui Dowling: Os anos de teenager são complicados e dificeis de aceitar, mas depois de ultrapassar essa fase vem a maturidade e não se imagina o que pode trazer até passarmos por ela. A experiência de vida vale mais do que muitos canudos. Nunca vou ter tudo o que os outros têm, mas talvez eles também não tenham muitas das coisas que eu consegui. Fiz o Liceu como qualquer outro aluno e tive uma juventude – dentro deste quadro – bastante boa. Muita gente com a minha doença

sai pouco ou está acamada, e alguns até são portadores de osteogénese imperfeita num grau superior. Portanto, neste cenário, posso dizer que sou um privilegiado. Naturalmente que jamais posso esquecer aquilo que os meus pais fizeram por mim e o que passaram!... A idade ajuda-nos a ter consciência disso e a reconhecer que foram fundamentais para eu ter chegado até aqui. Acredito que a união da família tem reflexo na nossa vida. É um bom suporte. O segredo está em sabermos manter essa união. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Quem são as pessoas mais importantes para ti? Rui Dowling: Os meus pais e a minha irmã. Quando fui Campeão Nacional pensei logo neles. Os meus pais tiveram uma vida complicada, mas foram fortes, deram-me força e a força deles tornou-me mais forte. BILHETE DE IDENTIDADE: 1. Data de nascimento: - 17 de Agosto de 1981. 2. Signo: - Virgem, mas não ligo a horóscopos, a jogos de azar ou bruxarias. Nunca me senti discriminado. 4.Escolaridade: - 12º ano de escolaridade. Poderia ter ido mais além, o que está sempre a tempo. 5.Paixões: - Cinema de documentário é a minha grande paixão, mais ainda do que a Vela (se o João Duarte ler isto, vai ficar mesmo contente!). Considero-me um autodidacta. Posso dizer que são amores diferentes... 6.Gostos: - Gosto muito de fotografias antigas. Também gosto de ler e de viajar, conhecer novas culturas. Já estive em Roma, Barcelona, e nos EUA com o nosso amgo Aguinaldo Luís, que durante uns tempos fez Vela connosco.

My family always supported me, but drawing attention to the care needed. Although we all practice Sailing, my problem is very different from Lício and Libério who were healthy persons but who suffered a life body injury. As much as possible, I’m healthy too, but my problem is entirely different from theirs. I´ve other cares they don´t need to worry about, such as avoiding strong winds or the impact that the boat might have. Besides that, when it rains, the contact lenses bothers me. On the other hand, maybe I win a little on mobility, because I move my feet and take a few steps hold. “My parent strength made me stronger” CNH Press Office: It´s noticed that you deal well with your illness and that you´re a calm person. Was it always like this? Rui Dowling: Youth is hard and difficult to accept, but after passing this stage comes maturity and we can´t imagine what it can bring us, until we pass through it. Life experience is worth much more than many degrees. I´ll never have everything that others have, but maybe, they also don´t have many of the things I got. I did High school like any other student and I´d a quite good youth - within this picture. Many people with my disease go out little or are bedridden, and some even have Osteogenesis imperfecta in a higher type. So in this scenario, I can say that I´m privileged. Of course, I can never forget what my parents did for me and what they went through! ...Age helps us to be aware of this and to recognize they were fundamental for me to have come this far. I believe that family union has a reflection in our life. It’s a good support. The secret is to know how to maintain this union. CNH Press Office: Who are the most important persons for you? Rui Dowling: My parents and my sister.

When I was a National Champion, I soon thought of them. My parents had a hard life, but they were strong, they gave me strength and their strength made me stronger. IDENTITY CARD: 1. Date of birth: - August 17th, 1981 2. Zodiac Sign: “Virgo, but I don´t mind horoscopes, gambling or witchcraft. I believe a lot in the odds of life. 3. Job: - Operational Assistant at Horta Hospital. I like what I do and I’m treated equally. I’ve never felt discriminated. 4. School grade: - High school grade (12th grade). I could have gone further, which is always in time. 5. Passions: - Documentary film is my big passion, even more than Sailing (if João Duarte reads this, he’ll be really happy!). I consider myself a self-taught. I can say that they´re different kind of loves. 6. Tastes: - I really enjoy old photos. I also like to read and to travel, getting to know new cultures. I´ve been in Rome, Barcelona and in the USA with our friend Aguinaldo Luís, who for some time, practiced sailing with us. I don’t travel as much as I’d like too, but I’m saving up for it. 7. Defects: - I’m distracted and forgetful. 8. Personality: “I’m not very demanding and concerning that, I admire Licio´s attitude, who doesn’t remain silent. Sometimes I am wronged and I don´t speak. I get defense mechanisms and I try to overcome less favorable situations. If I want something badly, I fight for it, but I’m not an explosive person. 9. Qualities: - I respect loyalty a lot. I know how to keep a secret and that’s important. I believe everyone is good, until they prove

Não viajo tanto como gostaria, mas estou a poupar para isso. 7.Defeitos: - Sou distraído e esquecido. 8.Personalidade: - Sou pouco reivindicativo e, nesse aspecto, admiro a postura do Lício, que não fica calado. Por vezes sou injustiçado e não falo. Arranjo mecanismos de defesa e tento ultrapassar as situações menos favoráveis. Se quero muito algo, luto por isso, mas não sou explosivo. 9.Qualidades: - Respeito muito a lealdade. Sei guardar um segredo e isso é importante. Acredito que toda a gente é boa até me provar o contrário. É claro que alguns nos decepcionam, mas por vezes nós também decepcionamos os outros. 10.Filme preferido: - Gosto de filmes do Alfredo Hitchcock. Documentários já vi muitos. Assim de repente, vou dizer “Eduardo Mãos de Tesoura”. 11.Livro lembrado: - Nunca li muitos livros, mas um que me marcou na altura, foi “A Volta ao Mundo em 80 dias”. Não é profundo, mas fala de uma temática que me diz muito, que são as viagens. 12. Prato preferido: - Gosto de polvo bem feito pela minha mãe, à moda da Calheta do Nesquim. A comida da mãe é sempre a melhor!

ensou-se, e com justeza, que este seria o tema que poderia servir de mote à nossa Revista deste ano. Sim, porque o Clube Naval da Horta tem-se afirmado cada vez mais no panorama Local e Regional, sem dúvida mas, sobretudo, a nível Nacional e até Internacional. Não estamos a falar de um clubezeco de bairro que faz umas actividades de vez em quando e que passa mais tempo hibernado do que propriamente em actividade. Também não estamos a falar de um clube elitista, virado para dentro e gerido por meia dúzia de empedernidos, que se esforçam por dar lustro ao ego, com habilidade para não fazer pêva e ainda se orgulharem de deitar abaixo o legado herdado.

Bearing in mind that this Club was the natural successor of the role that the Local Junta of the Portuguese Naval League had been playing in Faial since 1903. While others in the Azores took advantage of this, we, softly, let it be... Regardless of the futility of this point, which does not diminish or belittle our importance, what matters is to highlight the work of Clube Naval da Horta as a true and worthy Ambassador of Faial, the Azores and Portugal in the World. Perhaps the usual routines make us accustomed in such a way to this volumetric pace, that it seems easy and natural to deal with the “program”, which unveils year after year. It is imperative, that we bear in mind that Clube Naval da Horta organizes the largest

Portuguese Nautical Festival. If we were at another location in the East, the headlines would not end and the support would not stop. But we, over here, have to do more with the same, and sometimes, even to do more with less than before. But even (deliberately) unsupported, Clube Naval da Horta organizes the Encontro Internacional de Vela Ligeira (Dinghy International Meeting) (this year, the XII year of the Meeting, which, year after year, brings to Faial more than 100 national and foreign competitive sailors), is also responsible for the organization of the Travessia do Canal

Faial / Pico (Faial / Pico Swim Cross Challenge), attracting the best of the Azores and Portugal, and witch could even (already) host some of the best open water competitive swimmers in the World; such does not happen however, due to the lack of support by some “usual friends”, for the simple reason (for lack of better words), that in the absence of the know-how to do the events, they cannot stand that others will do it, even if this others, do it by their own means and their own sweat. In spite of these permanent pinpricks, the CNH can boast that, since the 80’s, its activity has been consolidated, in a

t was rightfully believed that this would be a theme that could serve as a motto for our magazine this year. Yes, and this is because Clube Naval da Horta - CNH has been increasingly affirmed in the Local and Regional panorama, without doubt, and above all, at National and even International level. We are not talking about a little club who does some activities from time to time, and who spends more time hibernating than actually in activity. Nor are we talking about an elitist club, turned inward and run by half a dozen snobs, that strive to luster their own egos; with the ability to do nothing and still be proud to throw down a club inherited legacy. With all the legitimacy, the reference is directed to a respectable and honorable Club, that this

Com toda a legitimidade, a referência é dirigida a um respeitável e honroso Clube, que este ano completa 70 anos de vida! E, a bem da verdade, poderiam, (deveriam!) ser 114, tendo em conta que foi o natural sucessor do papel que a Junta Local da Liga Naval Portuguesa vinha desempenhando no Faial desde 1903. Enquanto outros nos Açores se aproveitaram disso, nós, brandamente, deixámos andar... Independentemente dessa questiúncula, que não diminui nem menospreza a nossa grandeza, o que importa realçar é o trabalho do Clube Naval da Horta como verdadeiro e digno Embaixador do Faial, dos Açores e de Portugal no Mundo. Talvez as rotinas façam

com que nos tenhamos habituado de tal maneira a este volumétrico ritmo, que pareça fácil e natural o “programa” desfiado ano após ano. É imperioso que tenhamos presente, que o Clube Naval da Horta organiza o maior Festival Náutico de Portugal. Se estivessemos numa outra paragem mais a Oriente, as parangonas não acabavam e os apoios também não. Mas nós, por cá, temos de fazer mais com o mesmo. Ou até com menos. Mas mesmo (deliberadamente) desapoiado, o Clube Naval da Horta organiza o Festival Internacional de Vela Ligeira, (este ano o XII que, ano após ano, traz ao Faial mais de 100 velejadores nacionais e estrangeiros) é

It should be also noted that, for many years now, Clube Naval da Horta has played a pivotal role in attract and support international regattas, such as the Les Sables / Horta / Les Sables Regatta; The “Lorient - Horta Solo”, the “Route des Hortensias” (Etel / Concarneau / Horta) and it is a usual partner in the reception program for “Tres Hombres” (the only freighter in the world, which is owned by the Dutch company “Fairtransport Shipping”), whenever it supplies itself in the Faial island. The same goes for the “Regina Maris”, a Dutch sailboat, which has on board the “School at Sea” program; such ship is already a usual presence in the port of Horta. It should be no-

ted that, in fact, some students from the Horta Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School (High School) have also embarked on this maritime adventure that will last about 6 months. In parallel to all of this range of actions, the CNH organizes the National Indoor Apnea Championship, promotes the Underwater Photography Contest, it has the Rui Silveira Olympic support Project underway, annually carries out the Sports Holidays Program, develops efforts to carry out the Horta-Madalena-Horta Sailing Sprint and battle daily to maintain the practice of sport of its 12 Sections: Apnea, Whaling Boats, Canoeing, Diving, Swimming, Boat Angling Championship, Shore Angling Championship, Mini-Sails, Cruise Sailing, Dinghy, Windsurf and Chess. A tremendous effort and work has been endured by the CNH, so that the athletes of the various sections can compete nationally and abroad, always aiming at qualitative support to the growth and evolution of all of its athletes. The CNH, which is proud to be visited by representatives of numerous naval clubs around the world, who are keen to present compliments and leave a souvenir. And that has a Center for the Training of Nautical Sportsmen, functioning as a Training Entity of Courses for Nautical leisure activities. It is this Club - undoubtedly the most dynamic of the 9 islands, that make up the Azores and which annually moves hundreds of athletes – which is responsible for the organization of the International Whaling Boat Regatta, on a alternating scale with the patricians and friends of the Azorean Maritime Heritage

responsável pela organização da Travessia a Nado do Canal Faial/Pico, atraindo os melhores dos Açores e de Portugal, e que já poderia contar com os melhores do Mundo, o que só não acontece por falta de apoio de alguns amigos de estimação que, por não saberem fazer, não suportam que outros se evidenciem à custa do próprio suor. E mesmo com estas permanentes alfinetadas, o CNH pode orgulhar-se de, desde os anos 80, ter a sua actividade consolidada, numa sucessiva linha de crescimento. De salientar, ainda, que, desde há muitos anos, que o Clube Naval da Horta assume um papel de charneira na captação e apoio a regatas internacionais, de que são exemplos a Regata Les Sables/Horta/Les Sables; a “Lorient - Horta Solo”, a “Route des Hortensias” (Etel/Concarneau/Horta) e, que, é parceiro usual no programa de recepção ao “Tres Hombres” (o único cargueiro, em todo o mundo, que navega sem motor, propriedade da companhia holandesa “Fairtransport Shipping”) sempre que este aporta ao Faial, bem como do “Regina Maris”, veleiro holandês, onde a bordo se desenvolve o Programa “Scool at Sea”, e que já é presença habitual no porto da Horta. Note-se que alguns alunos da Escola Secundária Manuel de Arriaga, da Horta, embarcaram nesta aventura marítima ao longo de 6 meses. Paralelamente a toda esta panóplia de acções, o CNH é organizador do Campeonato Nacional Indoor de Apneia, promove o Concurso de Fotografia Subaquática, tem em curso o Projecto Olímpico de Rui Silveira, realiza anualmente o Programa Férias Desportivas, desenvolve esforços para levar a cabo o Horta-Madalena-Horta Sprint e batalha diariamente para manter a prática desportiva das suas 12 Secções: Apneia, Botes Baleeiros, Canoagem, Mergulho, Natação, Pesca Desportiva de Barco, Pesca Desportiva de Costa, Mini-Veleiros, Vela de Cruzeiro, Vela Ligeira, Windsurf e Xadrez. Tem sido enorme o esforço e o trabalho encetado para que os atletas das várias Secções possam competir no país e fora dele, visando o seu crescimen-

to e evolução com qualidade. O CNH, que se orgulha de ser visitado por representantes de inúmeros clubes navais de todo o mundo, que fazem questão de apresentar cumprimentos e deixar uma lembrança, dispõe de um Centro de Formação de Desportistas Náuticos, funcionando como Entidade Formadora de Cursos da Náutica de Recreio. É este Clube – sem dúvida o mais dinâmico das 9 ilhas que compõem os Açores e que movimenta anualmente centenas de atletas – a quem cabe a organização da Regata Internacional de Botes Baleeiros numa escala alternada com os patrícios e amigos da Azorean Maritime Heritage Society, de New Bedford; que colabora activamente com a Organização da ARC Europe (Rally Atlântico pela Europa, organizado pelo World Cruising Club, que todos os anos visita o Faial); que organizou – com mérito reconhecido – o Campeonato Nacional de Vela Adaptada, (organização de 2014 foi memorável) e que é Responsável pela Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia, a maior Regata de Vela de Cruzeiro dos Açores, que este ano vai já na sua 29ª edição. Associada a esta Regata, está a edição da Revista “Atlantis Cup”, a cargo do Clube Naval da Horta. Trata-se de uma publicação bilingue (em português e inglês), a cores, com uma tiragem de 500 exemplares, distribuída nos mais importantes Centros do Iatismo Nacional e Internacional e que serve de veículo promocional desta prova de Vela de Cruzeiro de reconhecido prestígio nacional. O Faial é conhecido pelo seu pioneirismo em vários aspectos, desde logo nos desportos. E isso revelou-se uma vez mais pela mão deste Clube ao destacar-se na integração da pessoa com deficiência no desporto, neste caso na Vela Adaptada (destinada a pessoas com mobilidade reduzida). Fomos os pioneiros e continuamos a ser os únicos nos Açores. O faialense Rui Silveira, velejador de topo, (Classe Laser) é a maior bandeira do Clube Naval da Horta em Portugal e no estrangeiro, sendo um atleta que honra e orgulha

Society, New Bedford; which collaborates actively with the ARC Europe Organization (Atlantic Rally, organized by the World Cruising Club, which visits Faial every year); who organized - with recognized merit - the National Adaptive Sailing Championship (the 2014 organization was memorable) and is responsible for the Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia, the largest Cruise Sailing competition of the Azores archipelago, which this year is already in its 29th edition. Associated to this Regatta, is the publication of the “Atlantis Cup” Magazine, an edition of Clube Naval da Horta. This has been shown once again by the hand of this Club by highlighting the integration of people with disabilities in sport, in this case in Adaptive Sailing (for people with reduced mobility), for all that was mentioned above, we were the pioneers and we continue to be the only ones in the Azores islands. The faialense Rui Silveira, a top-class sailor, (Laser Class) is the biggest flag bearer of Horta’s Naval Club in Portugal, and abroad, being an athlete who honors and prides his land and his Club, he is the holder of a winning roster, filled with victories and distinctions. David Abecasis and Miguel Guimarães, living in the Portuguese main land, are also sailors (Snipe Class), who are keenly defending the colors of the CNH, knowing that they are cherished and supported by all in Clube Naval da Horta in their love to this high competition sport, to which they always have a profound dedication. This duo also holds dozens of titles and cups, in their long

a sua Terra e o seu Clube, detentor de um palmarés recheado de vitórias e distinções. David Abecasis e Miguel Guimarães, a viver no Continente português, são, também, velejadores (Classe Snipe) que, afincadamente, defendem as cores do CNH, sabendo que são acarinhados e apoiados no seu gosto e dedicação pela modalidade, que levam muito a sério. Esta dupla é igualmente detentora de dezenas de títulos e taças na sua já longa carreira. Depois de, em 2011, ter recebido o Prémio de Excelência Desportiva, a última coroa de glória do Clube Naval da Horta foi a Certificação da sua Escola de Vela nas modalidades de Vela Ligeira e Vela Adaptada, pela Federação Portuguesa de Vela. Desde Dezembro de 1989 que o CNH foi declarado pessoa colectiva de Utilidade Pública, por ser “uma organização orientada para fins de interesse geral e que presta serviços, de maneira desinteressada, à sociedade”. Em Maio, na Gala do Desporto Açoriano, dois dos seus velejadores, Rui Silveira e Rui Dowling, foram galardoados pelos feitos alcançados: o primeiro encontra-se a trabalhar num projecto que visa os Jogos Olimpicos de Tóquio, em 2018, e o segundo foi Campeão Nacional de Vela Adaptada em 2016. Este ano, no Dia da Região (5 de Junho), o Clube Naval da Horta foi distinguido com a com a Insígnia Autonómica de Mérito Cívico, numa Sessão Solene que contou com o Presidente da República, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Apesar de todas estas distinções e a beirar 7 décadas de existência activa e proactiva, o Clube Naval da Horta continua (vergonhosa e escandalosamente) a funcionar numa sede degradada e obsoleta, onde chove dentro. Se somos capazes de ser e fazer tudo isto, num quadro de rigorosa gestão, provocada pela austeridade imposta pelos cortes nos apoios e subsídios governamentais, o que seríamos com um pouco mais? E, então, se nos dessemos ao luxo de ter um orçamento como aquele que os senhores dos rallies ou dos

futebóis (imerecidamente) recebem, onde é que estaríamos? Se o CNH dinamizasse à proporção do que recebe, há muito que poderia ter encostado os barcos e fechado as portas. A começar pelo Presidente desta “casa”, que faz um horário superior a tempo inteiro, que chega cedo e sai tarde, que dá de si, do seu tempo, do seu material e do seu dinheiro. Tudo em prol do Clube que ele defende com unhas e dentes. E depois, há os restantes corpos directivos, um batalhão de atletas, um exército de Voluntários, uma legião de Sócios e um número ínfimo de Funcionários, mas todos a dar a cara pelo Clube, independentemente do que (não) ganham. É o dinamismo desta massa humana, liderada por um Mestre experiente e visionário, que faz com que o Clube esteja neste patamar e consiga projectar o Faial. É nas adversidades que mostramos o que valemos. A nossa posição geoestratégica, a nossa vocação e ligação ao mar, a nossa experiência e know-how, a nossa simpatia, hospitalidade e bem receber, fazem parte do nosso ADN e não há ventos nem marés que desfaçam esta composição. Por isso, continuaremos assim (mesmo que doia), porque gostamos e sabemos fazer. Em prol dos nossos Atletas, dos nossos Sócios e do nosso Faial, terra briosa, pioneira e culta.

After having received the Sports Excellence Award in 2011, the last crown of glory of Clube Naval da Horta was the certification of its Sailing School in the classes of Dinghy Sailing and Adaptive Sailing, by the Portuguese Sailing Federation. Since December 1989, the CNH has been declared a legal person of Public Utility, because it is “an organization oriented towards common interest purposes and that provides disinterested services to society”. In May of this year, two of the CNH sailors, Rui Silveira and Rui Dowling, were honored for their achievements, in the Gala for Azorean Sports: the first one is working on a project aimed at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2018, and the second one was the National Champion of Adaptive Sailing in 2016. In the present year, on the Region Day (June 5), Clube Naval da Horta was awarded the Autonomic Insignia of Civic Merit, in a solemn session that included the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Despite all these distinctions, and bordering on seven decades of active and proactive existence, Clube Naval da Horta continues (shamefully and outrageously) to operate in a degraded and obsolete headquarters, where it rains inside. If we are capable of being and doing all this, in a framework of strict financial constrainment management, provoked by the austerity imposed by the cuts in government supports and subsidies, what would we be, with a little more? And then, if we could afford to have a budget like the one´s that the managers of rallies and or football championship’s (undeservedly) receive, where would we be? If the CNH would perform at the proportion of what financially receives, for a long time it should have tied up the boats and closed its doors. But all its members go above and beyond their regular duties, beginning with the President of this “house”, that sets an example from the top, doing a full-time work schedule; always arriving early and leaving

late, giving, his time, his supporting materials and even his money. All for the sake of the Club that he defends with all his conviction, and then there are the remaining governing bodies, a battalion of athletes, an army of volunteers, a legion of club associated members and a very small number of loyal club staff; but all of them defend the Club, regardless of what they are (not) payed. It is the dynamism of this human mass, led by an experienced and visionary leader, who makes the Club reached and stand at this level and achieves to project the image of Faial Island on an international scenery. It is in adversity that we show what we are worth. Our geostrategic position, our vocation, and connection to the sea, our experience and know-how, our sympathy, hospitality and hosting practice’s, are part of our DNA and there are no winds or tides to undo this composition. So we will continue this way (even if it hurts), because we like it like this, and know how to do it better than most. Sendo que o tema da Revista Atlantis Cup 2017 é o Dinamismo do Clube Naval da Horta (CNH) na Projecção do Faial, eu diria que esta tripulação é o fruto desse dinamismo. A nossa vontade de correr pelo CNH vem, principalmente, da abertura deste Clube que sempre nos recebeu da melhor forma, onde as amizades sempre perduraram e sempre que regressávamos o carinho se mantinha ou era reforçado. Foi, então, com naturalidade, que nos decidimos a representar este Clube e que também passámos a ser embaixadores do mesmo e, principalmente, do Faial. A nível nacional somos sempre questionados pelo facto de corrermos pelo CNH, porque ambos éramos conhecidos por correr por outros clubes, e essas questões são óptimas oportunidades para falarmos sobre o Paraíso que é o Faial, local aliás que tanto eu como o David não nos importaríamos nada de viver. A nível internacional, tentamos sempre esta-

belecer boas relações com os clubes que visitamos e sempre apresentamos o Clube Naval da Horta e o Faial. Sempre que existem estas conversas, em ambos os casos que falámos anteriormente, o resultado é bastante engraçado, porque usualmente nos dias seguintes somos bombardeados com perguntas sobre o Faial ou o Clube como, também, a respeito das baleias, da natureza, do excelente porto de passagem para barcos, e quase sempre as pessoas acabam por dizer que depois do nosso encontro colocaram a visita ao Faial como um dos seus sonhos de vida. Penso que, para nós, a projecção do Faial é isto. É feita desta forma simples onde, pessoalmente passamos aos nossos companheiros de regatas pelo mundo fora os valores e a terra que nos fizeram representar este Clube.

at national and international level” Being the theme of the Atlantis Cup 2017 Magazine the Dynamism of Clube Naval da Horta (CNH) at the Faial Projection, I would say that this crew is the fruit of this dynamism. Our desire to run for the CNH comes mainly from the opening of this Club that always received us in the best way, where friendships always lasted and whenever we returned the caring was maintained or reinforced. It was then, with naturalness that we decided to represent this Club, this way we also became his ambassadors and, mainly, Faial. At national level we are always questioned why we run for the CNH, because we were both known to run for other clubs, and these questions are great opportunities to talk about the Paradise that is Faial, a place that David or I would not mind to live in.

At international level, we always try to establish good relations with the clubs we visit and we always introduce Clube Naval da Horta and Faial. Whenever there are these conversations, in both cases we have talked about before, the result is quite funny, because usually in the following days we are bombarded with questions about Faial or the Club as well as about whales, nature, the excellent port of passage for boats, and almost always people end up saying that after our meeting they put the visit to Faial as one of their dreams of life. I think that, for us, the projection of Faial is this. It is made in this simple way where, personally, we pass on to our racing partners around the world the values and the land that made us represent this Club.

orge Macedo foi, durante 12 anos, Vice-Presidente do Clube Naval da Horta (CNH), tendo, simultaneamente, sido Director da Secção de Vela de Cruzeiro deste Clube e Director de Prova da Atlantis Cup - Regata da Autonomia. Passados estes anos, entendeu que era altura de fazer uma pausa sem, contudo, se alienar do dirigismo, onde se encontra há 30 anos. Neste cenário, e com o intuito de ter alguém que conhecesse a realidade e pudesse dar sequência ao trabalho que vinha sendo feito, José Decq Mota, Presidente da Direcção do CNH, propôs que Jorge Macedo passasse a liderar a Associação Regional de Vela dos Açores (ARVA), o que foi aceite pelos restantes clubes da Região. E é na qualidade de Presidente da ARVA – uma realidade desde março deste ano – que Jorge Macedo acedeu ser entrevistado pelo Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH, revelando o rumo que pretende implementar ao longo deste mandato, que termina em 2021. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Embora tenha experiência de liderança, a verdade é que o Clube Naval e a ARVA são entidades distintas. Jorge Macedo: Tudo isto é novo para mim e por isso ainda estou a apalpar terreno. O funcionamento do Clube Naval da Horta não tem muito a ver com a ARVA, são entidades com competências diferentes. Enquanto na ARVA o trabalho é direccionado exclusivamente para o desporto federado de competição, no CNH o foco é desenvolver a formação de atletas do próprio Clube, fomentar actividades que vão ao encontro dos Sócios, promover os Açores no mundo náutico através das regatas internacionais, etc. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH:

Jorge Macedo: O trabalho da ARVA incide, essencialmente, na organização e orientação Regional da Vela Ligeira de Competição, dando aos clubes todo o apoio de enquadramento, no que à modalidade da Vela Ligeira diz respeito. or 12 years, Jorge Macedo was Vice-President of the Clube Naval da Horta (CNH), being at the same time, also, Director of the Cruise Sailing Section of this Club and Race Director of the Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta. After these years, he understood that it was time to take a break without, however, alienating himself from civic management, an activity where he has been for 30 years. In this scenario, and with the intention of having someone who knew the reality and could follow up on the work that had been done, José Decq Mota, President of the CNH board of administration, proposed that Jorge Macedo should lead the Regional Sailing Association of the Azores (Associação Regional de Vela dos Açores - ARVA), which was accepted by the other clubs in the Region. And it was, as president of ARVA - a reality since March of this year – that Jorge Macedo agreed to be interviewed by the Press Office of the CNH, revealing the course he intends to implement throughout this term, which ends in 2021. CNH Press Office: Although you have leadership experience, the truth is that CNH and Associação Regional de Vela dos Açores - ARVA are distinct entities. Jorge Macedo: This is all new to me and so I’m still “testing ground”. The operation of the Clube Naval da Horta does not have much to do with ARVA, they are entities with different competences. While at ARVA the work is exclusively directed to federated sport at competition level, at CNH the focus is to train and develop the athletes’ of the Club itself, to promote activities that meet the needs of Club Members, and to promote the Azores in the nautical world through international regattas, etc.

CNH Press Office: What are the tasks of ARVA? Jorge Macedo: The work of ARVA focuses essentially on the organization and regional orientation of Light Sailing Competitions, giving the clubs all the framework support, in everything that concerns the “modality” of Light Sailing. ARVA also collaborates in the joint organization of Regional Trials, where the sailors/athletes are selected for the National Trials, according to criteria previously defined by the associated clubs; we also manage all the logistics of travel to the Trials, both in the Region of the Azores islands and in the Portuguese mainland. - CNH Press Office: What are the guidelines for this mandate? Jorge Macedo: Before answering the question, I would like to point out that one of the conditions I placed to accept the position, was that of representing more clubs in ARVA’s management bodies. This Directorate has a majority of elements of the island of Faial, which is understandable given our geographical discontinuity, it is equally important to also have people from other islands, which already happen in this mandate, with an element of the island Terceira and one of São Miguel Island. The idea was well received by the clubs present at the General Assembly, held last March. With today’s communication technologies, it is very easy for everyone to attend the meetings on any island. In fact, we already had meetings with member’s participations via Skype. The present Directorate intends that the clubs that are inactive, to resume their activity on a regular basis. It is our intention to implement in the Clubs a greater activity in terms of Local Regattas, encouraging that in the islands, with more than one Club, we intend to incentive these groups local activity, and fomenting more actions of exchange, in order to obtain greater competitiveness and the will on the part of the Athletes in the competition. We will do everything in our power to carry out a Regional Training internship program with a coach of the Portuguese Sailing Federation,

Regionais, onde são apurados os velejadores para as Provas Nacionais, dentro de critérios previamente definidos pelos clubes associados, orientando toda a logística de deslocações às Provas, quer na Região quer no Continente. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Quais são as linhas orientadoras para este mandato? Jorge Macedo: Antes de responder à questão colocada, gostava de referir que uma das condições que coloquei para aceitar o cargo, foi o da representatividade de mais clubes nos órgãos de direcção da ARVA. Esta Direcção tem uma maioria de elementos da ilha do Faial, o que se compreende atendendo à nossa descontinuidade geográfica, é igualmente importante ter, também, pessoas de outras ilhas, o que já acontece neste mandato, com um elemento da ilha Terceira e um de São Miguel. A ideia agradou aos clubes presentes na Assembleia-

-Geral realizada em março passado. Com as tecnologias de comunicação existentes actualmente, é muito fácil todos participarem nas reuniões feitas em qualquer ilha. Aliás, já houve reuniões com participações via Skype. A actual Direcção pretende que os clubes que se encontram inactivos retomem a sua actividade de forma regular. É nossa intenção implementar nos Clubes uma maior actividade em termos de Regatas Locais, incentivando a que nas ilhas com mais de um Clube, estes se agrupem na actividade local fomentando mais acções de intercâmbio, para que se obtenha maior competitividade e à vontade por parte dos atletas na competição. Faremos tudo o que estiver ao nosso alcance para realizar um Estágio Regional com um treinador da Federação Portuguesa de Vela, situação já colocada à Federação e aceite com muito agrado. Outro dos objectivos em marcha – e existe uma rúbrica para isso por parte da Direcção Regional do Desporto (DRD) – é a contratação de um Director Técnico, licenciado em Educação Física tendo, obrigatoriamente, formação na vertente de Vela. Esta questão foi abordada com a DRD na Cimeira da Vela, que decorreu em Angra, no passado mês de maio. E, a propósito, foi dito que há uma comparticipação para o ressurgimento deste quadro da ARVA, que já existiu em tempos. Estamos a falar de mais um funcionário para a ARVA, que neste momento dispõe apenas de uma administrativa. O Director Técnico daria um apoio fundamental nas questões de desenvolvimento desportivo e apoio técnico aos nossos clubes associados, tendo em conta que todos os dirigentes têm a sua vida profissional e que já dão, graciosamente, muito do seu tempo a esta instituição.

a situation already proposed in the national Federation and accepted with great pleasure. Another of the objectives in progress - and there is a guideline for this by the Regional Directorate of Sports (Direcção Regional do Desporto - DRD) - is the hiring of a Technical Director, graduated in Physical Education, who also has to be trained in the Sailing field. This issue was addressed with DRD at the Sailing Summit, which took place in Angra (Terceira island) last May. And, by the way, it was already said that there is a contribution to the resurgence of this ARVA framework, which already existed in the past. We are talking about one more employee for ARVA, who currently only has one administrative on its payroll. The Technical Director would give a fundamental support on the issues of sports development and technical support to our associated clubs, bearing in mind that all the leaders/directors have their professional life and that they already gracefully give much of their time to this institution. I know it’s not easy to find someone who meets all of these requirements. He must be a superior technician graduated in Physical Education, who is predisposed to go train in the area of Sailing. The ideal would be someone who had already done Sail, to have this school of training. Our idea is to be able to count on the Technical Director already in 2018. The Sail sports season ends on 31 July and on 1 August begins another. There is interregnum in practice, but on actuality that does not happen. The Regional Championship of Sailing Schools will take place from July 22nd to 23rd in Magdalena do Pico. It is the last Regional Event that gives access to the National of Small Schools, to be held in the first week of September, this year in Funchal. It is our intention - if we have the financial backing to support it - to retake up the original Regional Championship organization, which included four competition stages instead of the current three Regional Championship stages (Provas do Campeonato Regional - PCR), with the aim of providing more competitive-

ness in larger groups, but it is something that we will not be able to implement this year due to lack of support. - CNH Press Office: Considering that you took charge of ARVA, only a few months ago, do you feel that you are already aquatinted with all its duties and function’s? Jorge Macedo: As soon as we took office, we had to deal with the logistics of the Games of the Islands, which took place in Martinique and where the Vice President, António Pedro Oliveira, went to accompany our Sail´s entourage. Then we had to deal with the logistics related to the National Championship of Juniors and Absolutes, which took place in Viana do Castelo, where I joined this entourage, even to perceive the operational issues with our fleet parked on the Continent. Next, it was the Portuguese Youth Championship with the Optimists in Sesimbra, where we had to move the boats on the Association’s own trailers, from Ovar to Sesimbra, and still to complicate our lives, the semi-rigid trailer was stolen. - CNH Press Office: But ARVA has in the Mainland a warehouse with material... Jorge Macedo: Yes, there is a warehouse rented with equipment in Ovar, in the area of Aveiro, but it is out of the way. We have there 8 Optimist, 3 Laser, 2 420, 2 semi-rigid, 1 9-seat van and their respective trailers

Sei que não é fácil encontrar alguém que preencha todos estes requisitos. Tem de ser um técnico superior formado em Educação Física, que tenha predisposição para ir fazer formação na área da Vela. O ideal seria alguém que já tivesse feito Vela, para ter essa escola. A nossa ideia é podermos contar com o Director Técnico já em 2018. A época desportiva acaba a 31 de julho e a 1 de agosto começa outra. Há interregno na prática, mas no papel isso não acontece. O Campeonato Regional de Escolas de Vela terá lugar de 22 a 23 de julho na Madalena do Pico. É a última Prova Regional que dá acesso ao Nacional de Escolinhas, a realizar na primeira semana de setembro, este ano no Funchal. É nossa intenção – caso tenhamos reforço financeiro no apoio para tal – retomar o figurino inicial de Campeonatos Regionais e que contemplava quatro em vez das actuais três Provas do Campeonato Regional (PCR), com o intuito de proporcionar mais competitividade em grupos maiores, mas é algo que este ano ainda não conseguiremos pôr em marcha por falta desse apoio. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Já deu tempo para conhecer os cantos à casa? Jorge Macedo: Mal tomámos posse, tivemos logo de tratar da logística dos Jogos das Ilhas, que decorreram na Martinica e em que o Vice-Presidente, António Pedro Oliveira, foi acompanhar a comitiva da Vela. Depois, tivemos de tratar da logística relacionada com o Campeonato Nacional de Juniores e Absolutos, que se realizou em Viana do Castelo, em que integrei essa comitiva, até para perceber as questões de funcionamento com a nossa frota estacionada no Continente. A seguir, foi o Campeonato de Portugal de Juvenis com os Optimist, em Sesimbra, em que tivemos de andar com barcos em atrelados da própria Associação, de Ovar para Sesimbra, e ainda para nos complicar mais a vida, o atrelado do semi-rígido foi furtado. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Mas a ARVA dispõe, no Continente,

de um armazém com material... Jorge Macedo: Sim, tem um armazém alugado com equipamento em Ovar, na zona de Aveiro, mas fica muito fora de mão. Temos lá 8 Optimist, 3 Laser, 2 420, 2 semi-rígidos, 1 carrinha de 9 lugares e os respectivos atrelados para todo este material, mas estamos a tentar arranjar um armazém numa zona mais centralizada. Aliás, encontrar um armazém na zona de Lisboa e trazer toda a frota que se encontra em Ovar, é algo que queremos fazer no imediato. Outra das prioridades, é substituir a carrinha, que acusa algum desgaste e, sendo um meio destinado ao transporte de jovens, as responsabilidades são acrescidas. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: A ARVA conta com apoio da Direcção Regional do Desporto (DRD)?

for all this material, but we are trying to find a warehouse in a more centralized area. In fact, finding a warehouse in the Lisbon area and bringing the entire fleet that is in Ovar is something that we want to do immediately. Another priority is to replace the van, which shows some wear and tear and, as it is a means of transporting young people, the responsibilities are increased. - CNH Press Office: Does ARVA counts with the support of the Regional Directorate for Sport (Direcção Regional do Desporto - DRD)? Jorge Macedo: We have an annual program contract, dedicated to the development of the activity of Sailing, similar to what exists for other sports. - CNH Press Office: Are the President of ARVA and the whole board of directors volunteers? Jorge Macedo: Of course! And political power sometimes does not realize that these leaders/directors also have their private lives. It is a voluntary job that requires a lot of work and none of us gets any compensation. In terms of dirigisme, this is state regulated, but the head of the service of the employer is not obliged to dismiss the employee whenever it is necessary. That is why there is a request for prior consent to this effect. There has been understanding on the part of the bosses, otherwise we would have even more problems. - CNH Press Office: What made you embrace this project? Jorge Macedo: I began to dedicate myself to the nautical world in 1989, at a time when I was already adult and married. All this began “because of” Mr. Aurelio Melo, who was at the time President of the HNC, along with Carlos Lacerda, my door neighbor. As a part of the board of the directorate of the HNC abandoned them, Carlos Lacerda challenged me to help them. I accepted the invitation and began to collaborate with the HNC. So far, I’ve always been connected to Football, both as a player and as a manager. I may even say that I was among the younger

leaders. At the age of 17, I was the manager of the Angústias Atlético Clube. They said they remembered that I had been the youngest element to assume Federated dirigisme on Faial Island. The first edition of the Atlantis Cup took place in 1988 and in 1989 I was already part of the Race Committee team. And I’ve always been connected to the Organization, although I’ve never done Sail in my life, nor even know how to sail. All this has a lot to do with organizational activity affinity. I like the sea, to see sailing and to enjoy to see the kids doing sail. Sailing is of the stubborn and not of the elite as sometimes one hears to say. If you go to Football, the club gives you some kickers (shoes) and a ball and you can get wet from rain every now and then, or you go to the Volleyball and the Basketball and you can get the material and the teams to a sheltered place, in Sail this does not happen. It may be bad weather or good weather that you are in, you always get wet. And you still have to assemble, carry and disassemble the whole rig and device of the boats, which has nothing to do with other sports. Sailing has other specificities and we must recognize this. - CNH Press Office: And this effort is not recognized? Jorge Macedo: I think it is recognized, but not yet enough. Those responsible for Regional Sports and even some Municipalities are beginning to come into contact with this reality. However, they still do not see Sailing as a sport that has to be cherished. I do not want Sail to be considered more than other activities, but there must be a special affection for the kids that Sail. It is imperative that there are other incentives for them to evolve in this sport. We are not talking only about money, but about the re-equipment of the fleet and the support for the training of technicians, in which many difficulties are to be noted. Naturally, I only know the reality of Horta’s Naval Club. In the Directorates that I joined, we have always done the, almost, impossible

Jorge Macedo: Claro! E o poder político, por vezes, não percebe que estes dirigentes também têm a sua vida privada. É um cargo voluntário que exige muito trabalho e nenhum de nós recebe qualquer compensação. Em termos de dirigismo, isso está regulamentado, mas o chefe do serviço não é obrigado a dispensar o funcionário sempre que neces-

A primeira edição da Atlantis Cup aconteceu em 1988 e em 1989 já fiz parte da equipa da Comissão de Regata. E sempre estive ligado à Organização, apesar de nunca ter feito Vela na minha vida, nem tão pouco saber andar à Vela. Tudo isto tem um bocado a ver com a afinidade organizativa. Gosto do mar, de ver Vela e de apreciar os miúdos a navegar. A Vela é dos teimosos e não da elite como por vezes se ouve dizer. Enquanto tu vais para o futebol e o clube te dá umas chuteiras e uma bola e podes apanhar uma molha de vez em quando, ou vais para o volei e para o basquetebol e tens o material à abrigada,

Tem havido compreensão por parte das chefias, caso contrário teríamos ainda mais problemas. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: O que o levou a abraçar este projecto? Jorge Macedo: Comecei a dedicar-me ao mundo náutico em 1989, numa altura em que já era adulto e casado. Tudo isto começou “por culpa” do Sr. Aurélio Melo, que na altura era Presidente do CNH, juntamente com Carlos Lacerda, meu vizinho de porta. Como uma parte da Direcção os abandonou, o Carlos Lacerda desafiou-me a dar-lhes uma ajuda. Aceitei o convite e comecei a colaborar com o CNH. Até aí, sempre estive ligado ao futebol, quer como jogador quer como dirigente. Posso mesmo dizer que fui dos dirigentes mais novos. Com 17 anos, fui dirigente do Angústias Atlético Clube. Diziam que se lembravam de eu ter sido o elemento mais novo a assumir o dirigismo federado na ilha do Faial.

na Vela isso não acontece. Pode estar mau tempo ou bom tempo que tu andas sempre molhado. E ainda tens de aparelhar, transportar e desmontar todo o aparelho dos barcos, o que não tem nada a ver com outras modalidades. A Vela tem outras especificidades e há que reconhecer isso. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: E esse esforço não é reconhecido? Jorge Macedo: Penso que sim, mas ainda não o suficiente. Os responsáveis pelo Desporto Regional e até alguns Municípios começam a tomar contacto com esta realidade. Contudo, ainda não vêem a Vela como um desporto que tem de ser mais acarinhado. Não quero que a Vela seja mais considerada do que as outras actividades, mas tem de haver um carinho especial para com aqueles miúdos que fazem Vela. É imperioso que existam outros incentivos no sentido de que evoluam nesta modalidade. Não estamos a falar só de dinheiro, mas do reequipamento da frota e no apoio à formação de técnicos, em que se notam muitas dificuldades. Na-

There are clubs that are less willing to attend to these fundamental aspects and these are the ones that, in my opinion, have to be more supported. - CNH Press Office: Does this support come from some local authorities? Jorge Macedo: I’m not going to talk about our local authorities, because there has not been enough time to get acquainted with the situation in the Region, but I can testify that I was very touched by what I saw on my first visit as President of ARVA to the Juniors and Absolutes, which took place this year in Viana do Castelo. That Club has some enviable facilities for any sailing club, including in them, an Internship Center; Warehouse in which the masts of all classes are placed vertically, because it has the height for it; Various technical offices; classrooms; Management room; Outdoor parking (huge) for boats, this to speak only of the facilities, and everything was ceded by the City Hall of Viana do Castelo. I can stated that they are the best facilities in the country! I had the pleasure of talking to the City Coun-

turalmente que só conheço a realidade do Clube Naval da Horta. Nas Direcções que integrei, fizemos sempre quase o impossível para termos equipamento de frota em condições navegáveis, assim como as embarcações de apoio, tendo sempre gente para que os velejadores se sentissem bem, mas tudo isto sai muito caro. Há clubes com menos disponibilidade para atender a estas vertentes fundamentais e são esses que, no meu entender, têm de ser mais apoiados. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Esse apoio acontece por parte de algumas autarquias? Jorge Macedo: Não vou falar das nossas autarquias, porque ainda não houve tempo útil para me inteirar da realidade na Região, mas posso testemunhar que fiquei muito sensibilizado com o que constatei na minha primeira deslocação, como Presidente da ARVA, ao Campeonato de Portugal de Juniores e Absolutos, que decorreu este ano em Viana do Castelo. Aquele Clube dispõe de umas instalações invejáveis para qualquer clube de vela tendo, englobado nestas, um Centro de Estágio; armazém em que se colocam os mastros de todas as classes ao alto, porque tem pé direito para isso; vários gabinetes técnicos; sala de aulas; sala de Direcção; parqueamento exterior (enorme) para embarcações, isto para falar só das instalações, e tudo cedido pela Câmara Municipal. Posso afirmar que são das melhores instalações do país! Tive o prazer de falar com o senhor Vereador do pelouro da Cultura e Desporto – conversa que depois foi confirmada pelo Presidente do Clube Naval de Viana do Castelo – e, de facto, o investimento daquele Município na modalidade Vela é algo excepcional. Eles trabalham sempre no sentido de captar cada vez mais eventos de vela para o concelho, porque sentem o retorno. Todos sabemos que, além dos atletas, depois vão muitas famílias a acompanhá-los, o que dinamiza alguns sectores económicos da cidade. Há uma clara aposta na Vela. Lamentavelmente, por cá, estas coisas ainda não foram encara-

das de forma séria. Fala-se muito no Turismo Náutico, mas a prática não o demonstra. É tempo de pensarmos nesta mais-valia para a nossa Região. Não é só a prática da competição nua e crua que tem de prevalecer. Devemos começar pelos miúdos e pela Escola. Uma das nossas preocupações na ARVA é incentivar essa prática. É intenção deste elenco directivo fazer uma ronda pelos municípios onde haja clubes para, de alguma forma, tentar despertá-los para as actividades da Vela. Todas estas ilhas são rodeadas por mar. Trata-se de um desporto que, se tiver boas acessibilidades, é fácil de praticar. Obviamente que os equipamentos são caros e é nesse âmbito que poderá haver algum incentivo por parte dos municípios para aquisição de equipamento ou apoio. Uma das maiores dificuldades dos clubes são os treinadores. Ter carta de treinador hoje em dia é muito difícil e dispendioso e os clubes não conseguem desenvolver a sua actividade corrente sem estes técnicos. Naturalmente que os clubes nas ilhas mais pequenas ficam muito condicionados por esta dificuldade. - Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Quando falamos na Vela, também está incluída a Classe Hansa (Vela Adaptada para pessoas com mobilidade reduzida)? Jorge Macedo: Naturalmente que sim. O Clube Naval da Horta foi pioneiro na inclusão da Vela para todos com a implementação da Classe Hansa (que antes se designava por Classe Access) e a ARVA vai apostar fortemente na expansão desta Classe a outros clubes dos Açores. E nesse sentido, dispõe de 2 embarcações 2.3 com atrelado, precisamente com o objectivo de fomentar essa prática. É fundamental que haja competição a nível regional. Neste momento, os velejadores do CNH só competem em termos nacionais por falta de adversários nos Açores. E, a propósito, aproveito esta oportunidade para realçar os excelentes resultados que têm sido alcançados, nomeadamente o facto de Rui Dowling se ter sagrado Campeão Nacional da Classe Access, em 2016, e de

Japan. He is an athlete trained at the Sailing School of the Naval Club of Horta and a pride for Faial and for the Azores. It has had a great evolution, revealing a continuous and laborious line of work. It is supported by the Club and ARVA and its results have been recognized and honored both inside and out. It is an example of success that deserves to be followed and supported with great attention, because we are talking about an ambitious and capable young man, who dedicates himself body and soul to Sail, his great passion. Its athletes like this who attest well what Sailing can represent in terms of sport, results, career and dedication. To reach this level, it was necessary to work hard and to continue at it, we still need to sail more. It’s a permanent challenge to get on the podium and be able to stay there.

O Rui Silveira é um atleta de Alta Competição, que está integrado na equipa olímpica da Federação Portuguesa de Vela visando os Jogos do Japão. É um atleta formado na Escola de

Vela do Clube Naval da Horta e um orgulho para o Faial e para os Açores. Tem tido uma grande evolução, revelando uma contínua e esforçada linha de trabalho. É apoiado pelo Clube e pela ARVA e os seus resultados têm sido galardoados e reconhecidos cá dentro e lá fora. É um exemplo de sucesso que merece ser seguido e apoiado com grande atenção, pois estamos a falar de um jovem ambicioso e capaz, que se dedica de corpo e alma à Vela, a sua grande paixão. São atletas como este que atestam bem aquilo que a Vela pode representar em termos de desporto, de resultados, de carreira e de dedicação. Coordenadora da Revista “Atantis Cup 2017”, dirigiu-me o convite para dar o meu testemunho sobre “O Dinamismo do Clube Naval da Horta na Projeção do Faial”, o que aceitei com agrado, pois estive ao leme deste prestigiado Clube durante os anos de 1992 a 1996. O Clube Naval da Horta tem-se afirmado ao longo dos tempos como uma instituição de grande prestígio e de utilidade pública a nível local, que projeta os Açores além-fronteiras. No plano interno, assiste-se a um crescendo no número de atividades e do envolvimento dos seus atletas. O Festival Náutico integrado na “Semana do Mar”, assume-se como um dos maiores do país e é bem o exemplo da pujança do Clube Naval da Horta. Ninguém fica indiferente ao presenciar o Encontro Internacional de Vela Ligeira, com velejadores dos Açores, Madeira, Canárias e Espanha, envolvendo mais de 100 embarcações, realizado no canal Faial-Pico, sendo um espetáculo fantástico e inesquecível. A nível nacional, a participação dos atletas é marcante e prestigiante, dignificando o Clube e o Faial pelos resultados desportivos alcançados. Internacionalmente, são várias as regatas que têm como destino o Porto da Horta, local de escala de regatas internacionais de Vela, quer de recreio, quer de competição, trazendo muita gente ao Faial, sendo o Clube Naval da Horta, um parceiro importante na receção, acolhimento e organização de algumas dessas regatas, apenas deixo dois

exemplos: - “Routes des Hortênsias” entre a Bretanha e a Horta (Etel–Horta–Concarneau), que teve início em 1993, realizando-se de dois em dois anos consecutivos, durante 20 anos, e que contou com a participação de um barco e respetiva tripulação do Clube Naval da Horta nos anos de 1999, 2001 e 2003, tendo os media de França dado grande destaque pelo brilhantismo alcançado nas participações que muito projetaram os Açores. - “Regata Les Sables–Les Açores–Les Sables” realizada entre a cidade de Sables d’Olonne e Horta, regata de Vela de competição da Classe mini 6.50 ou 40’’, que teve início há uma década e que se vem realizando anualmente, com chegada à Horta aquando da Semana do Mar. O envolvimento das Câmaras Municipais destas cidades têm trazido ao Faial os seus presidentes, demais entidades e muita gente, que consideram que a Horta está no mapa da Vela Internacional como local de chegada e de partida de regatas à Vela. É inquestionável que o Clube Naval da Horta desempenha um papel importante na valorização da nossa sociedade, na promoção dos desportos náuticos e na divulgação do Faial e dos Açores no exterior. A justificá-lo, no dia 05 de junho p.p., Dia da Região Autónoma dos Açores, foi distinguido com a “Insígnia Autonómica de Mérito Cívico”, sendo prestigiante para o Clube e para o trabalho que é desenvolvido, mas que continua sem encontrar uma solução para as suas instalações adequadas às necessidades da atividade levada a cabo. Tal como é reconhecido, o importante trabalho desenvolvido pelo Clube Naval da Horta, é tempo de solucionar o problema das instalações, que há anos se arrasta, sob pena do CNH ficar limitado ao cabal desempenho das suas atividades. A “Atlantis Cup 2017 – Regata da Autonomia”, a mais importante Regata à Vela realizada nos Açores, que brevemente irá para o mar na sua 29.ª edição, e que no seu atual figurino liga todas as ilhas da Região, que seja uma Festa da Vela e dos velejadores com as gentes das ilhas e estou certo que muitos contribuirão para que os Açores sejam cada vez mais conhecidos no mundo.

The head Coordinator of the magazine “Atlantis Cup 2017” addressed me the invitation, to give my testimony on “The Dynamism of the Horta Naval Club in the Projection of the island of Faial”, which I accepted with pleasure, since I was at the helm of this prestigious Club, has its president, from the year 1992 to 1996, respectively. The Horta Naval Club – HNC has been affirmed, over time, as a structure of great prestige and public/civic utility at local/ regional level, which projects the Azores islands, beyond the national borders. In the HNC on an internal organizational level, there is a growing number of new activities and the involvement of their respective athletes. The Nautical Festival, integrated in the “Week of the Sea”, is one of the largest in the country and is well the example of the strength of the Horta Naval Club. Nobody is

indifferent when witnessing the International Meeting of Light Sailing, with sailors from the Azores, Madeira, Canaries and continental Spain, involving more than 100 vessels, performed in the Faial-Pico channel, being a fantastic and unforgettable nautical show. At the national level, the participation of the athletes of the Horta Naval Club is profoundly striking and deeply prestigious, dignifying the Club and our island of Faial for the results achieved in the sports events they participated. Internationally, there are several regattas that have as destination the Port of Horta, place of stopover of international Sailing regattas, either of recreation or competition, bringing many people to Faial, being the Horta Naval Club, an important partner in the reception, hosting and organization of some of these regattas, I leave (only) two examples:

As it is such recognized, the important work developed by the Club, it is also time to solve the problem of the facilities of the HNC, that for years have dragged without foreseen solution, and coming under the shadow of greatly limiting the performance of the activities of the Horta Naval Club. The “Atlantis Cup 2017 - Regata da Autonomia”, the most important sailing regatta held in the Azores, which will soon go to sea in its 29th edition, that in its current format connects all the islands of the Region, we hope that it may be a Commemoration of the Sailing activity and of its sailors, in community with the people of the Azores islands, and in this, I am sure, that all will contribute to make the Azores, even more well-known worldwide.

“Tenho uma paixão enorme pela Natação” “I have a huge passion for Swimming”

la tem apenas 10 anos de idade, mas já é considerada a melhor nadadora dos Açores no seu escalão. Chama-se Diana Neves, defende as cores do Clube Naval da Horta (é Cadete A) e tem-se revelado um prodígio. Começou a nadar com 5 anos e mesmo depois de um treino de 90 minutos diz que não está cansada. Ambiciona ser professora de Educação Física e gostava de fazer da natação uma carreira profissional, o que poderá vir a ser uma realidade se tivermos em conta as medalhas que já ganhou e a fixação em alcançar bons tempos e resultados. Parece que os genes também lhe dão uma ajudinha, pois o irmão – Luís Neves, de 16 anos, igualmente nadador do CNH – é um excelente atleta, muitíssimo medalhado também. Esta candura de menina, tem na História e no Português – além da Educação Física, claro – as suas disciplinas favoritas, conseguindo ter boas notas na escola e no desporto. Sente que a Treinadora (Sílvia Mendonça) é “exigente”, mas percebe que isso é para que fique “resistente” e “possa evoluir”. Os seus adversários directos são os que conheceu até agora e estão em São Miguel e na Terceira, onde também fez amigos. Admite que a intimidam se pensar que podem ser melhores, mas isso só acontece fora de água, pois em competição esta faialense tem mostrado a sua raça. Ser a melhor deixa-a “orgulhosa” por si e pelo CNH, além de que sabe

bem receber os parabéns da Treinadora e a admiração dos colegas e amigos. Os pais – Luís Carlos e Sónia – ficam “impressionados” com ela e com o irmão e todos já se aperceberam de que ambos podem ter “um grande futuro”. Sente que o Clube Naval da Horta é a sua casa e gosta imenso dos momentos que permitem o convívio entre atletas e amigos, proporcionados pelos almoços, beberetes e outras acções que o CNH promove, precisamente visando o entrosamento dos atletas. Estando no 5º ano de escolaridade, já percebeu que vêm por aí muitos desafios, mas acredita em si e na capacidade de agarrá-los e vencer. Trabalhar é a palavra de ordem para esta adolescente de longos cabelos claros, olhos azuis e ar doce. Sonha que “vai ser bonito” poder representar o Clube num patamar mais elevado, já que, por enquanto, apenas conhece a realidade açoriana. Contudo, já começou a mentalizar-se de que as asas do sucesso a levarão para voos mais altos e longínquos do Faial. Mesmo dizendo

he´s only 10 years old, but she´s already considered the best swimmer in her category in the Azores. Her name is Diana Neves, she wears the colors of Clube Naval da Horta (in Cadet A) and she´s proving out to be a prodigy. She started to swim when she was 5 years old and even after a 90-minute practice she says she’s not tired. Diana ambition to be a Physical Education teacher and she also wants to become a professional swimmer, which can become a reality if we take into account the number of medals she has already won and her determination in achieving good times and results. It seems that the genes also gave her a little help, because her brother - Luis Neves, 16 years old and also a CNH swimmer - is also an excellent athlete, highly medalist. This sweet girl has in History and Portuguese - besides Physical Education, of course - her favorite school subjects, achieving good grades, both in school and in sports. She feels that Coach (Sílvia Mendonça) is “demanding”, but she knows that this is so in order that she can gain “resistance” and “can grow”. Her direct opponents are those she has met so far and they live in São Miguel and Terceira islands, where she also made friends. She admits that they can intimidate her when she thinks they can be better than her, but this only happens out of water, because in competition this Faialense has shown her strength. Being the best makes her “proud” of herself and also for the CNH and besides, it feels great to be congratulated by the Coach and win the admiration of her colleagues and friends. The parents - Luís Carlos and Sónia - are “impressed” with their sons and everyone has already realized that both can have “a great future”. She feels that Clube Naval da Horta is her home and she enjoys every moment that allows the interaction between athletes and friends, provided by lunches, drinks and other actions promoted by the CNH, aiming the integration of the athletes. Being in the fifth year of school, she has already realized that many challenges are

coming ahead, but she believes in herself and in her ability to grasp and overcome them. Working is the watchword for this sweet teenager with long light hair and blue eyes. She dreams that “it will be beautiful” to be able to represent the Club at a higher level since, for now, she only knows the Azorean reality. However, she has begun to realize that the wings of success will take her to higher and distant flights from Faial. Even saying she´s “afraid of the strong and the biggest” she knows that she call the shots and that she can always count on her Coach´s experience and encouragement, because she´s also not playing around. The compliments of the CNH Director Swimming Section, Olga Marques, who likes her “a lot” and always tells her that she´s “good”, in fact, “the best”, makes her shy facing this responsibility but, at the same time, elevates her ego, being “cool” hearing words like these. She thinks that´s “good to help the Club”, but she recognizes that this is the house that´s making her a great swimmer. Dance also fills Diana’s life - she´s a hip hop

que tem “medo dos fortes e grandes”, sabe que dá cartas e que pode contar sempre com a experiência e incentivo da Treinadora, que não brinca em serviço. Os elogios da Directora da Secção de Natação do CNH, Olga Marques, que gosta “muito” dela e lhe diz sempre que ela “é boa”, aliás, “a melhor”, deixam-na tímida perante a responsabilidade mas, ao mesmo tempo, com o ego em alta, sendo “fixe” ouvir palavras como essas. Considera que “é bom ajudar o Clube”, mas reconhece que é esta casa que está a fazer dela uma grande nadadora. A dança também preenche a vida de Diana – que integra um grupo de hipop – assim como a leitura, embora numa escala mais reduzida. Diz com naturalidade que tem um namorado – e atenção, que este já não é o primeiro – mas garante que “os pais sabem”. Aliás, o felizardo (também nadador no CNH) é, a par da família, a pessoa mais importante na sua vida. Despontando para a perceção do potencial que encerra, Diana Neves aspira “ficar em 1º lugar e ter bons tempos para ir aos nacionais”, uma novidade no seu percurso. Paralelamente ao momentos que dedica aos jogos em computador e ao jogo dos gestos, a Natação também está presente nas brincadeiras de Diana, em que finge ser professora, com espaço para dar explicações sobre esta modalidade. E depois questiona “os seus alunos” sobre “o porquê de também não praticarem este desporto”. E sempre que lhe dizem que “têm muito medo do fundo”, sabiamente explica que “quando começarem a nadar, vão perceber que já não olham para o fundo e vão seguir em frente”. Quando esta revelação no feminino está a nadar, sente-se tão bem que tudo o resto é esquecido. Não admira, pois, que efusivamente diga que a natação é o seu mundo da paixão. E a dedicação é mesmo a 100 por cento, já que em pleno tempo de férias, no Verão, (em que as aulas de Natação ficam a descansar), ela agarra na touca e nos óculos e vai treinar para as piscinas, o que deixa

“muito mirones” fixados nela. Sentindo ser o foco das atenções daqueles que não percebem este afinco, Diana sabe que não pode correr o risco de tirar tempos não condicentes com o seu estatuto, que implica resistência e evolução em escala ascendente. Sendo adepta de educação física, com predilecção para as corridas e os saltos, é normal que surjam pequenas lesões, as quais são esquecidas – mesmo com “alguma dor” – sempre em nome da assiduidade e do cumprimento dos objectivos traçados. Com o seu talento nato e trabalho diário, motivado pela insaciável vontade de vencer da Treinadora, os resultados são uma realidade, mostrando que o futuro tem de ser preparado desde já. É por isso que outras realidades se avizinham para Diana Neves, cuja timidez inicial é vencida por um à vontade e simpatia espontâneos, ainda muito marcados pela inocência de quem está pouco habituada à fama. Diana: rapidamente te vais habituar a entrevistas e a focos de luz, pois a partir de agora é sempre a subir, que é como quem diz, a nadar mais e mais fundo nas águas da competição.

And whenever they tell her that they “are afraid of the bottom” she wisely explains that “when they start to swim, they´ll realize that

they no longer look to the bottom and they´ll move on”. When this feminine revelation is swimming, she feels so good that everything else is forgotten. No wonder then that she warmly says that swimming is her world of passion. And her dedication is really 100 percent, since in her full summer vacations (when swimming classes are taking a break), she grabs the swimming cap and glasses and she goes to the swimming pools for practice, catching a lot of “many outsiders looks” fixed on her. Feeling to be the attention of those who don´t understand this commitment, Diana knows that she can´t take the risk to take a time out of her status, which implies strength and evolution on an ascending scale. Being a physical education fan, with a predilection for running and jumping, it´s common that small lesions appear, forgotten - even with “some pain” - always in the name of attendance and fulfillment of the goals established. With her natural talent and daily work, motivated by her Coach’s insatiable will to win, the results are a reality, showing that the future has to be built right now. That´s why other realities are now closer to Diana Neves, whose initial timidity is overcome by a spontaneous willingness and sympathy, still very marked by the innocence of someone who’s less accustomed with fame. Diana: You´ll quickly become accustomed to interviews and spotlights, because from now on it’s always going up, which is as it says, to swim deeper and deeper into the waters of competition.

entre o submersível LULA1000 e o submarino U-581, naufragado há 75 anos

mar sempre nos trouxe histórias, desde os relatos de viagens aos mitos do longínquo e das profundezas. Hoje, são os avanços da ciência e da tecnologia que nos trazem as narrativas mais surpreendentes. Que o digam Joachim e Kirsten Jakobsen, da Fundação Rebikoff-Niggeler (FRN), ao comando do seu submersível LULA1000, capaz de descer aos 1000 m e de captar imagens de grande resolução por detrás da vigia de acrílico construída para o efeito. No verão de 2016, depois de analisada toda a informação disponível acerca do naufrágio do submarino alemão U-581 afundado em 1942 (em plena II Guerra Mundial) o catamarã da FRN, Ada Rebikoff, fez-se repetidamente ao mar. Equipado com equipamentos acústicos de alta tecnologia como um sonar multifeixe e um sonar de varrimento lateral, bateu a área descrita para tentar localizar o submarino naufragado. O rectângulo de busca media mais de 100 km2.

No entanto essas sondagens não permitiram detectar o naufrágio. Restou apenas um monte submarino - área difícil para manobrar equipamentos que se movem junto ao fundo, como é o caso do sonar de varrimento lateral, rebocado pelo navio. Ironia do destino, ou talvez não, foi afinal com o submarino LULA1000 que o U-581 acabou por ser descoberto. A 13 de Setembro do mesmo ano, nas imediações do monte submarino e durante um mergulho dedicado à filmagem de fauna marinha, o sonar do LULA1000 mostrou uma forma alongada, como um charuto, que fez Kirsten e Joachim trocarem olhares antes de se aproximarem do objecto. A 870 m de profundidade chega a emoção de se estar frente a frente com o gigante testemunho de um passado que, se não estava esquecido, foi de certa forma silenciado - tudo indica que o submarino alemão terá sido atacado pelo navio britânico HMS Westcott a menos de 3 milhas marítimas da

costa do Pico, ao largo de São Mateus e, portanto, em território português, neutral durante o conflito. E as surpresas. Para Joachim, que construiu os dois submarinos da FRN e é responsável pela parte técnica de todas as operações, já que a observação directa foi novamente mais eficaz que a tecnologia remota. E para ambos, por não esperarem que em apenas 75 anos aquela máquina de guerra se revestisse com tanta vida e se transformasse num hotspot de vida submarina. Sendo que desde a sua fundação em 1994, a FRN mantém diversas colaborações com instituições de investigação em ciência marinha, a identificação imediata de diversas formas de corais revelou desde logo a importância do local para o estudo do desenvolvimento destas colónias. De notar também o interesse da comunicação social pela descoberta. A National Geographic Portugal do passado mês de Fevereiro inclui uma reportagem muito completa dedicada à descoberta e à reconstituição dos factos do naufrágio. A FRN produziu entretanto imagens de alta resolução do submarino e está neste momento a construir um foto-mosaico do naufrágio. Ambos os meios serão instrumentos valiosos para a investigação científica que procurará conhecer melhor os contornos históricos do naufrágio e do fenómeno que ele representa no habitat natural do local onde se encontra.

An unbelievable encounter in the deep between the LULA1000 submersible and the German U-boat U-581, which sank 75 years ago

he sea has always brought us stories, from ancient voyage reports to the myths of distant places and great depths. Today, it is advances in science and technology that bring us the most amazing tales. Joachim and Kirsten Jakobsen from Rebikoff-Niggeler Foundation (FRN) can confirm this first hand when in command of their LULA1000 submersible, capable of descending to 1000m and optimized for capturing high resolution images from behind the specially designed acrylic viewport. In summer 2016, after having analyzed all available information about the sinking of the German u-boat U-581 in 1942 (in the

middle of World War II), FRNÂ´s catamaran Ada Rebikoff went repeatedly to sea. Using state-of-the-art acoustic equipment, such as a Multibeam sonar and a sidescan sonar, a defined search area was scanned systematically to try to locate the U-boat wreck. The search rectangle measured over 100 square kilometers. However, these surveys did not lead to the detection of the wreck. In the end, one underwater mountain area remained - an area too dangerous to work with equipment which is being towed just above the seabed by the surface vessel, as is the case with the sidescan sonar.

Irony of fate, or maybe not, ultimately it was with the LULA1000 submersible that the U-581 was discovered. On 13th september, 2016, during one of the dives dedicated to filming deepsea fauna in the mountainous area, the sonar onboard the LULA1000 showed an elongated shape, like a cigar, which made Kirsten and Joachim exchange glances before approaching the object. At 870m deep came the emotional moment of being face to face with the giant testimony of a past which, though not forgotten, had somehow

been silenced. Everything indicates that the German U-boat had been attacked by the British destroyer HMS Westcott less than 3 nautical miles away from the coast of Pico Island, off São Mateus. Thus it was in Portuguese territory, neutral during the conflict. There were some surprises. Joachim, who has designed both of FRN´s research submersibles and is responsible for the technical side of all operations, found direct observation to once again be more effective than remote technology. And neither Kirsten or Joachim expected this war machine to have been so extensively colonized and transformed into a real hotspot of marine life in just 75 years. Immediate identification of several coral forms, thanks to FRN’s close collaboration with various marine science institutions, revealed the importance of the site for the study of the development of these colonies. The discovery also triggered considerable media interest. The February edition of the Portuguese National Geographic magazine included a very complete article on the discovery and the historical facts that led to the sinking of the U-boat. In the meantime, FRN has produced high-resolution images of the wreck and is now building a photo-mosaic of the whole site. Both media will be valuable tools for scientific research that will seek to better understand the historical circumstances of the sinking as well as the biological phenomenon that the wreck represents in the natural environment where it is located.

stas nossas lindas ilhas e em particular o Faial, tem vindo, ano após ano, a ganhar projecção na navegação marítima à vela. Basta olharmos para o porto da Horta para nos depararmos com centenas de veleiros das mais diversas nacionalidades e proveniências, cada qual com as suas histórias, vivências e culturas, fazendo deste Clube um local de interculturalidade entre os que aqui aportam para nos visitar e provar da nossa já reconhecida “hospitalidade”. Se, por um lado, a situação geográfica dos Açores no meio do Atlântico Norte é factor importante, por outro é o nosso passado recente de “bem receber” os que nos demandam, que fazem da Horta o ponto de encontro e quase a “meca” do iatismo. Neste contexto, o Clube Naval da Horta ocupa lugar de primazia nas regatas e noutros tantos eventos e competições que organiza ou apoia na Região e, também, a nível nacional e internacional. Recordo que foi o CNH que organizou a primeira Semana do Mar que hoje, reconhecidamente, ocupa lugar ímpar nas festividades e desportos náuticos, fazendo com que a Horta, na primeira semana de Agosto, seja chamada de “Cidade Mar”. Quando estava em Darwin, na longínqua Austrália, fui solicitado a proferir uma conferência sobre os Açores no Dyna Beach Yacht Club, isto, porque na popa do “Hemingway” levava a bandeira dos Açores. Também foi na sede do CNH que, no dia 10 de Abril de 1998, foram comemorados os 80 anos do grande navegador Marcel Bardiaux que, pela 3ª vez fazia escala na Horta. O Clube Naval da Horta, como já referido exaustivamente, ocupa lugar de destaque no cenário náutico Regional, Nacional e Internacional. Assim sendo, urge – por merecimento – de instalações condignas e dos meios necessários para o desenvolvimento das actividades náuticas e de formação que oferece. A reference in the Nautical World at Regional, National and International level

“T

hese beautiful islands, and in particular Faial, have come year after year to gain a foothold in sailing. Just look at the port of Horta to find hundreds of sailboats of the most diverse nationalities and origins, each one with its histories, experiences and cultures, making this Club a place of interculturality among those who come here to visit us and taste our already recognized “hospitality”. If, on one hand, the geographical situation of the Azores in the middle of the North Atlantic is an important factor, on the other hand it is our recent past to “welcome” those who demand us, which makes Horta the

meeting point and almost the “Mecca” of sailing. In this context, Clube Naval da Horta takes place of primacy in regattas and in many other events and competitions it organizes or supports in the region and also at national and international levels. I remember that it was CNH that organized the first Sea Week which today, admittedly, occupies a unique place in festivities and nautical sports, causing Horta, in the first week of August, to be called “Cidade Mar” (Sea City). In my travels around the world, whenever I had the opportunity, in schools, universities, nautical clubs or elsewhere, I spoke about our islands, I testified about the importance of the port of Horta in recreational navigation worldwide. There were many flags of the Azores and Clube Naval da Horta that I left around the world. When I was in Darwin, in distant Australia, I was asked to give a lecture about the Azores at the Dyna Beach Yacht Club, because in the Hemingway stern I carried the flag of the Azores. It was also at the headquarters of CNH that, on April 10, 1998, the 80th anniversary of the great navigator Marcel Bardiaux was celebrated, which for the 3rd time was stopping over at Horta. Clube Naval da Horta, as already mentioned exhaustively, occupies a prominent place in the Regional, National and International nautical scene. Therefore, it is urgent - due to merit - of decent facilities and the necessary means for the development of nautical activities, formation and training that it offers. Good winds and a warm welcome to all participants of the 2017 Atlantis Cup and a special greeting to “our” Clube Naval da Horta.

you make a sailor? Rui Silveira (Laughs!): With great desire, to which should be added work, ambition, competence, planning, financial management and human resources. All these elements are very important. CNH Press Office: But are you the engine of the machine? Rui Silveira: I am the first face of the success or failure of this project, although the failure cannot be attributed only to me. I do not regard times of failure as frustrations but rather as opportunities for learning, self-criticism and observation. CNH Press Office: Who takes part of your machine? Rui Silveira: Clube Naval da Horta, the Coach, the Physical trainer, my family, my girlfriend ... but then there is also the support from the Regional Secretariats of Sports and Tourism, The Regional Sailing Association of the Azores, the City Council of Horta, the Portuguese Sailing Federation. The effort and the work are mine however, there is a vast group of people and institutions that, directly or indirectly, develop mechanisms to make my athlete life as easy as possible. CNH Press Office: Do you feel the importance of representing a region and a country? Rui Silveira: To continue to be worthy of this support, I need to work constantly in order to maintain the current competitive level, synonymous of topmost quality.

Mas depois, há também, a vertente dos apoios que vêm das Direcções Regionais do Desporto e do Turismo, da Associação Regional de Vela dos Açores, da Câmara Municipal da Horta, da Federação Portuguesa de Vela. O esforço e o trabalho são meus, mas há um vasto conjunto de pessoas e instituições que, directa ou indirectamente, desenvolvem mecanismos para que a minha vida de atleta esteja o mais facilitada possível. Rui Silveira: Para continuar a ser merecedor deste apoio, preciso de trabalhar constantemente com o intuito de conseguir manter o actual nível competitivo, sinónimo de qualidade de topo.

Sou uma pessoa sincera, honesta e frontal e, se tivesse enveredado por outro caminho, não estaria a ser isso para comigo próprio. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: A Vela vai ser uma realidade até quando? Rui Silveira: Enquanto eu puder velejar e competir. Quando não me sentir apto, motivado, competitivo, não vale a pena continuar. Claro que parte da minha persistência depende de mim e da minha capacidade e a outra de quem está à minha volta. Preciso de

Mas, naturalmente que não estou só focado na Vela, pois deparo-me com situações que têm de ser resolvidas no imediato e sou eu quem as enfrento. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: O que destacas na tua já longa carreira como velejador profissional? Rui Silveira: Pequenas conquistas que me

Rui Silveira: Sem o apoio pessoal, financeiro, anímico, emocional da minha Família, que é o mais importante para mim, nada disto seria possível. I feel fulfilled with Sailing, I am a sincere, honest and frontal person, and if I had

My career has reached a level where it is not enough for me to want, it no longer depends on me alone. Want, we all want; but to achieve it or to be able to do it, is very different. This is not for anyone who wants, but for those who can and can manage to get there. CNH Press Office: Who is your support? Rui Silveira: Without the personal, financial and emotional support from my family, which is the most important thing for me, none of this would be possible. This support existed from the beginning of my career and continues today, but I do not know if it will be possible to keep this way in the future, because it is a financial and emotional wear and tear,

ro e emocional pesadíssimo, o que em muitos casos nos leva a testar os limites. Este projecto foi uma aposta pessoal e familiar. Partiu de dentro. Ninguém conhecia a capacidade do Rui Silveira. É verdade que os apoios oficiais sofreram uma grande evolução nos últimos 8 anos, fruto de uma política regional mais consciente, mas que ainda tem de ser melhorada. Os apoios existentes são cada vez mais específicos, visando as necessidades dos atletas. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: O que ficou para trás? Rui Silveira: A oportunidade de viver outra vida, outra carreira, outros momentos. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: O que é que te move? Rui Silveira: A preocupação de estar preparado sempre que sou chamado a competir. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: O que seria um dia glorioso para ti? Rui Silveira: Alcançar o apuramento para os Jogos Olímpicos de 2020, em Tóquio. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Esse objectivo domina a tua mente? Rui Silveira: Estamos a falar de um objectivo concreto que quero atingir e perceber que valeu a pena. Essa meta será a consequência de um trabalho diário ao longo de 4 anos, com objectivos diários, mensais e anuais. O que foi feito até aqui deu-me know-how. Rui Silveira: Máxima! É o Clube que eu represento e que dá a cara por este projecto. Claro que se não houvesse interesse da minha parte e apoio por parte do Clube Naval, esta parceria não era possível. Tem havido um bom entendimento até hoje. jecto dada a importância da imagem positiva que é projectada para o exterior. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Como te vês? Rui Silveira: Como um profissional da Vela. Sou fiel com quem trabalho e represento e só espero que os outros também o sejam para comigo. A minha realidade presente e futura é directamente condicionada por mim e por todos os que trabalham comigo. No dia em que sentir que algum daqueles que estão à minha volta não partilha dos mesmos objectivos, deixará de caminhar comigo. Gabinete de Imprensa do CNH: Consegues viver as vitórias no presente ou estás sempre no futuro? Rui Silveira: Acima de tudo, sinto-me bem por ter sido competente e perceber que tomei a opção certa no momento certo. É crucial olhar para trás e ver que o trabalho foi bem feito, que as peças encaixaram e que culminaram num bom momento desportivo, o que denota competência. Mas a verdade é que não dá para pensar muito. Retiro o que é importante e foco-me no futuro.

which in many cases leads us to test the limits. This project was a personal and familiar bet. It begun from inside. No one knew Rui Silveira’s ability. It is true that the official support has undergone a great evolution in the last 8 years, the result of a more conscious regional policy, but that still has to be improved. Existing supports are increasingly specific, targeting the needs of the athletes. CNH Press Office: What’s left behind? Rui Silveira: The opportunity to live another life, another career, other moments. CNH Press Office: What moves you? Rui Silveira: The concern to be prepared whenever I am called to compete. CNH Press Office: What would be a glorious day for you? Rui Silveira: Achieving the qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. CNH Press Office: Does that goal dominates your mind? Rui Silveira: We are talking about a concrete goal that I want to achieve and realize that it was worth it. This goal will be the result of daily work over 4 years, with daily, monthly and yearly goals. What has been done so far has given me knowledge. Competency and honesty in the way I work is the most important to me. “Whoever does not share my goals will stop walking with me”

CNH Press Office: How important is CNH? Rui Silveira: Is of the utmost importance! It is the Club that I represent and gives the face for this project. Of course, if there was no interest from me and support from CNH, this partnership was not possible. There has been a good understanding to this day. I hope that the Club remains aware of the real value of this project given the importance of the positive image projected abroad. CNH Press Office: How do you see yourself? Rui Silveira: As a professional of Sailing. I am faithful to the people I work and represent as I hope they are to me. My present and future reality is directly conditioned by me and by all people who work with me. The day I feel that some of those around me do not share the same goals, they will stop walking with me. CNH Press Office: Can you live the victories in the present or are you always in the future? Rui Silveira: Above all, I feel good for being competent and realizing that I have taken the right option at the right time. It is crucial to look back and see that the work was well done, that the pieces fit together and that culminated in a good sporting moment, which denotes capacity. However, the truth is you cannot think too much. I take back what is important and focus on the future.

As Grandes Viagens da

os últimos dois anos a lancha baleeira recuperada “Walkiria”, operada pelo Clube Naval da Horta (CNH), fez, no mar da Região, duas viagens grandes, diferentes de tudo aquilo que aconteceu durante as dezenas de anos em que operou, no tempo da baleação e neste novo tempo de utilização desportiva e cultural do património baleeiro. De facto, em 2016 a “Walkiria” foi ao Grupo Ocidental, navegando sozinha, tendo feito entre a Horta e as Lajes das Flores e regresso uma viagem de 264 milhas. Em 2017 a “Walkiria”, navegando em conjunto com a “Rosa Maria” do Clube Náutico das Lajes do Pico (CNLP), foi ao Grupo Oriental, tendo feito uma escala em Ponta Delgada e navegado depois para Vila do Porto, com regresso direto à Horta, navegando na totalidade desse percurso 395 milhas. Qual foi a razão destas viagens? A resposta é simples e prende-se com o facto da Comissão Consultiva do Património Baleeiro ter instituído em Outubro de 2015, usando competências que a Lei lhe confere,

a realização anual de um Campeonato Regional de Vela e Remo em Bote Baleeiro e decidido, nessa altura, que o primeiro campeonato se realizaria nas Lajes das Flores em julho de 2016. Pôs-se logo a questão de saber se, sim ou não, esse Campeonato Regional seria enquadrado por lanchas da baleia como é normal em todas as regatas de botes baleeiros. Nessa altura, o CNLP e o CNH mostraram-se disponíveis para fazerem deslocar as lanchas “Rosa Maria” e “Walkiria” às Flores, disponibilidade que foi aprovada pela Direcção Regional da Cultura. Uma inesperada avaria na hélice da “Rosa Maria”, nas vésperas da partida, impediu que a lancha das Lajes do Pico pudesse fazer a viagem e a “Walkiria” foi sozinha, tendo sido secundada, na organização do Campeonato, pela lancha portuária “Elite”, do Clube Naval das Lajes das Flores. Em novembro de 2016 a Comissão Consultiva do Património Baleeiro marcou o Campeonato Regional de Vela e Remo em Bote Baleeiro para Vila do Porto, Ilha de Stª Maria, para ser realizado a 8 e 9 de Julho de 2017, tendo o CNLP e o CNH disponibilizado, desde logo, as suas lanchas para irem ao Grupo Oriental. A Direcção Regional da Cultura, compreendendo a importância patrimonial das regatas de botes em vela e remo serem enquadradas por lanchas da baleia, aprovou a deslocação das duas lanchas à ilha mais oriental e foi com ambas essas lanchas classificadas que a Comissão de Regata organizou esse muito intenso e concentrado Campeonato Regional. Estas duas longas viagens da “Walkiria” correram, como se esperava, muito bem e

comprovam a solidez e navegabilidade destas excelentes lanchas dos anos 30, entretanto recuperadas. Registe-se, para memória futura, os nomes dos tripulantes da “Walkiria” nestas viagens: Na viagem às Flores os tripulantes foram Vítor Mota, José Decq Mota, José Macedo, Carlos Silva e Horácio Silva. Na viagem a St. Maria, com escala em Ponta Delgada, foram tripulantes Vítor Mota, José Decq Mota, José Macedo e Horácio Silva e no regresso à Horta a constituição da tripulação incluiu José Decq Mota, José Macedo, Horácio Silva, José Alberto Norte e Luis Carlos Alves. Registe-se também as caraterísticas principais desta emblemática lancha da baleia recuperada e classificada, propriedade do Município da Horta e operada, por via de um protocolo permanente, pelo Clube Naval da Horta: Comprimento: 12,25 m; Boca: 2,84 m; Pontal: 1,35m; Arqueação: 6,01 t; Motor: MAN 355.1 HP; Ano de construção: 1938. Estas duas viagens nos mares dos Açores, fora do Grupo Central que é a área de navegação da “Walkiria”, foram realizadas mediante Autorizações Especiais da Autoridade Marítima, tiveram o apoio em combustível da Direcção Regional da Cultura e foram atentamente acompanhadas, via rádio, pela Estação Costeira da Cooperativa Porto de Abrigo.

n the past two years, the “Walkiria” recovered whaling motorboat, operated by Clube Naval da Horta (CNH), has made two large voyages in the region, different from everything that happened during the dozens of years in which it operated in the whaling activity and in this new time of sporting and cultural use of the whaling heritage. In fact, in 2016 the “Walkiria” went to the Western Group, navigating alone, having made between Horta and Lajes in Flores Island and return, a trip of 264 miles. In 2017, the “Walkiria”, cruising together with “Rosa Maria” of Clube Náutico das Lajes of Pico Island (CNLP), went to the Eastern Group, having made a stopover in Ponta Delgada and then navigated to Vila do Porto in Santa Maria Island, with direct return to Horta, cruising in the totality of this route 395 miles. What was the reason for these trips? The answer is simple and it is related to the fact that the “Comissão Consultiva do Património Baleeiro” (Advisory Commission on Whaling Heritage) has established in October 2015, using the powers conferred by the law, the annual holding of a Regional Sailing and Rowing Championship in Whaling Boat and that the first championship would be held in Lajes of Flores Island in July 2016. er or not this Regional Championship would be framed by whaling motorboats as is normal in all whaling boat races. At that time, CNLP and CNH were available to send “Rosa Maria” and “Walkiria” whaling motorboats to Flores island, availability that was approved by the Regional Directory of Culture. An unexpected breakdown in the “Rosa Maria” propeller, on the eve of the journey, prevented the Lajes of Pico boat from making the trip and then “Walkiria” went alone, and was seconded, in the organization of the Championship, by the port boat “Elite “, of the Clube Naval das Lajes das Flores. In November 2016, the Advisory Commission on Whaling Heritage decided that the Regional Sailing and Rowing Championship in Whaling Boat would be held in Vila do Porto in Santa Maria Island, on July 8th and 9th of 2017. The CNLP and CNH made available, at first hand, their whaling motorboats to go to the Eastern Group. The Regional Directory of Culture, understanding the importance of the regattas of sailing and rowing whaling boats being framed by whale motorboats, approved the displacement of the two boats to the eastern most island and it was with both of these classified boats that the Race Commission organized this much intense and concentrated Regional Championship.

These two long voyages of the “Walkiria” ran, as expected, very well and prove the solidity and navigability of these excellent boats made in the thirties and recovered. For future memory, the crew members of the “Walkiria” on these trips were: on the trip to Flores island Vítor Mota, José Decq Mota, José Macedo, Carlos Silva and Horácio Silva; On the trip to Santa Maria island, with a stopover in Ponta Delgada, the crew members were Vítor Mota, José Decq Mota, José Macedo and Horácio Silva and on their return to Horta the crew names were José Decq Mota, José Macedo, Horácio Silva, José Alberto Norte and Luis Carlos Alves. recovered and classified, property of the Township of Horta, and operated by means of a permanent protocol by Clube Naval da Horta: Length: 12.25 m; Beam: 2.84 m; Moulded depth: 1,35m; Tonnage: 6.01 t; Engine MAN 355.1 HP; Year of construction: 1938.
