Later, a friend from New York City stayed there for a while and suggested to the couple that they rent the place on Airbnb. Sandy said that, at first, they dismissed the idea. But after purchasing an adjacent property with an A-frame home, fixing that up, and successfully renting that out, the Maines decided to try renting the treehouse too.

As they begin their fourth season of renting it, Sandy said that The Rock House is quite popular with tourists.

The Maines are very flexible with the rental periods — from one night to a week or more. It’s $100 a night, plus $35 cleaning fee. You may pay additional fees, if you go through Airbnb.

LAFAYETTE TREEHOUSE: COUPLE SURPRISED WITH DEMAND

“It’s a real immersion into nature.” That’s how Tom Wallace describes the treehouse rental located on his 20-acre property in LaFayette, about 20 minutes south of Syracuse that he and his wife, Lisa, have been renting out since 2020.

THE TREEHOUSE THAT’S THE ROCK HOUSE

When you were younger, a tree fort might have proven to be the perfect escape.

You might be a little older now, but a treehouse can still be that perfect escape for vacationers who love the outdoors.

Consider Sandy and Lou Maine’s treehouse near Parishville, in the

northwest part of the Adirondack Park near Potsdam.

The building is approximately 10 by 12 feet in size. it’s about 10 feet high and sits atop an enormous boulder. Hence the name, The Rock House.

The Rock House includes a pullout couch, a small dresser ; and shelving stocked with some soaps from Sandy’s Adirondack Fragrance and Flavor Farm. Outside, the Maines have added a kitchen pavilion, a Finnish sauna with a shower, and an outhouse.

The setting of the house is a nature-lover’s paradise. There are approximately four miles of trails, a landing where renters can borrow a canoe or kayak to take on the river and a swimming hole, according to Sandy.

The treehouse was built by Lou Maine for their daughter when she was

Connecting this area to the small but cozy bedroom upstairs is a spiral staircase. A platform underneath the treehouse includes a fire pit and an outdoor shower. The treehouse is approximately 150 square feet.

The treehouse sits about 35 to 40 feet high in the treetops, Wallace said, and is only accessible by a 60-foot suspension bridge.

There is a two-night minimum. Weekend rates are $350 per night, and $250 per night during the week. It is available through Airbnb.

SPEND A FEW NIGHTS ABOARD A LOCKMASTER BOAT

For those looking to explore an historic part of New York state from a unique vantage point may consider renting one of the 11 Erie Canal Adventure lockmaster boats and touring a stretch of the Erie Canal and its picturesque port towns.

Completed in 1825, the 363-milelong Erie Canal was instrumental in the commerce and development of the New York state and especially the cities along its shores. It has been celebrated as a significant civil engineering achievement.

The canal boats range in size from 34 to 42 feet, and can be chartered for round trips of three, four or seven nights, according to Allie Keenan, an owner and vice president of operations of Erie Canal Adventures, based out of Macedon.

The round-trip, seven-day itinerary from Macedon to Lockport is approximately 165 miles, and goes through eight locks both ways. The round-trip seven-night trip from Macedon to Baldwinsville is approximately 135 miles, and boaters experience going through locks 16 times, since

there are eight locks one way.

The smaller boats have one private cabin with a double bed the kitchen area has a bench area that can be converted into a second sleeping area, and a bathroom with shower the larger boats have two cabins and all the boats have a kitchen with a fridge, stove and oven, all kinds of utensils and even air conditioning. Rental rates start at $2,295, and they will vary depending on the boat selected and rental length.

Special licenses are not required, but renters will receive a four-hour training program on the day of their departure, Keenan said. They begin with classroom-style training and then they will go out on the Canal with one of the Erie Canal Adventures guides to go through water navigation training. This includes going through two locks and learning how to dock the boat properly.

Erie Canal Adventures bought the enterprise from Mid-Lake Navigation in 2019, and Keenan said that the rental adventures are very popular, drawing people from 40 states to the canal area.

Their season begins mid-May, when the canal opens, to mid-October.

Erie Canal Adventure keeps 11 lockmaster rental boats along the Erie Canal. They range in size from 34 to 42 feet, and can be chartered for round-trips of three, four or seven nights.

Lake Ontario Wine trail

WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF LAKE ONTARIO as a summer destination, they tend to think camping, hiking, climbing, boating, swimming, fishing and other activities.

There’s so much to see and do and experience on the smallest of the Great Lakes you’ll want to drink it all in. And that includes sampling locally produced wine, hard cider and spirits.

You might be familiar with the Finger Lakes and the wine trails that circle the major lakes. North of the Finger Lakes and a bit off the beaten path is the Lake Ontario Wine Trail, which includes parts of Cayuga County and Wayne County and a sliver of Monroe County, not far from Rochester.

The region’s climate and soil are said to produce some of the finest fruit in New York state, including grapes and apples. And a corps of enthusiastic producers is taking that fruit from the farm to the bottle, can and glass.

Audrey Allen, tasting room manager and a partner at JD Wine Cellars in Macedon, says the Lake Ontario Wine Trail was created in 2010 to showcase

the region’s growers and producers — and to drive visitors to them. Back then, she says, it was common to hear people say things like: “I had no idea grapes were grown up here. I thought they were only grown in Finger Lakes.’’

The trail has grown from five early members to 10 this year: six wineries, three cideries (including one that’s also a distillery) and one brewery. DisBatch Brewing Company is Wayne County’s first microbrewery.

Following is a look at three of the Lake Ontario region’s makers of adult beverages. Plan a daytrip — or better still — consider staying a night or two.

COLLOCA ESTATE WINERY FAIR HAVEN

Life’s a beach in Fair Haven, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. And it’s always “wine o’clock’’ in the Cayuga County community, thanks to one

of its main attractions, award-winning Colloca Estate Winery.

Winery founder and CEO Chris Colloca grew up in Oswego and attended college in Ithaca, which helped to plant the seed for his love of wine. The chiropractor planted his first vinifera grapes in 2010, establishing the Lake Effect Vineyard, and the Colloca Estate tasting room opened in 2014. The 103-acre property overlooking Little Sodus Bay has expanded to include an outdoor pavilion and outdoor wine bar with a wood-fired kitchen. The Colloca event center will host 60 weddings this summer. During the summer months, guests arrive by boat or by car and bands take the stage five days a week.

Colloca Estate Winery specializes in cool climate wines, like riesling (three styles), chardonnay and pinot noir, using grapes grown on site and purchased from Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario growers. More than 10,000 people visited the property last year. Colloca thinks that’s because of its sweeping, park-like setting and his open invitation to explore it: “Come for

“One of the reasons people come here is because people know they can really enjoy the property,’’ Colloca says. “They can lay a blanket down and have a bottle of wine and watch the sailboats and they can see how wine is made and not just be exposed to a tasting room.’’

Colloca Estate hosts several big events each summer, including a Fourth of July celebration with fireworks over the bay and the Paella on the Baya festival (July 14) that’s part of Fair Haven’s annual BayFest. The Lake Ontario Food, Wine and Jazz Festival (Sept. 3) brings together members of the Lake Ontario Wine Trail, who set up at the event. Mark your calendars.

JD WINE CELLARS MACEDON

Long Acre Farms in Macedon (Wayne County) is home to the longest-running corn maze in New York state, the Amazing Maize Maze, which opens each year in August. It’s also home to JD Wine Cellars, a winery and tasting room. That makes the “agri-tainment’’ destination double the pleasure.

JD Wine Cellars, a sister business of the farm, opened in 2010, the same year the Lake Ontario Wine Trail was

established. Partner and winemaker Audrey Allen says her parents wanted a value-added project to generate business year-round and turned to grapes and wine. The winery specializes in white, red and fruit wines. Marquette grapes are grown on a half-acre of the farm, but most grapes and other fruits used for their wines are sourced from the Finger Lakes and other Wayne County growers.

Popular white wines made on site include unoaked Chardonnay, Riesling, Traminette, and Cow Town, a lightly oaked Chardonnay inspired by Allen’s time living in Western Australia.

Trilogy, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Blaufränkisch, is a house-favorite red wine.

“The winery fully supports our farm,’’ Allen says. “It has been a wonderful addition.’’

Adults will find a tasting room and can also enjoy a glass or flight of wines outside. There is a fee to sample wines. There’s also a farm market and ice cream shop. For children, there are two play areas. There’s an admission fee to access The Back 40 activity area.

EMBARK CRAFT CIDERWORKS WILLIAMSON

Lagoner Farms is a fifth-generation farm well-known in the greater Rochester area for its produce, including apples. When the family was looking to diversify its farm and farm market operations, Jacob “Jake” Lagoner saw an opportunity to get into the hard cider business. He had dabbled in making wine and beer at home and visited several hard cider makers in Michigan and New England and was “blown away’’ by the complexity of flavors.

Sister business Embark Craft Ciderworks came to fruition in 2015. “The name Embark came from the fact that we were starting a new journey — embarking on a new venture — and we wanted our customers to embark on a journey with us to explore [hard] cider,’’ Lagoner said in an email.

Wayne County is one of the top apple-producing districts in New York state and the Lagoner family has been growing apples in Williamson for more than a century. Customer favorites at Embark include flagships like The Batch, a semi-sweet cider made with Macintosh, Empire, Ida Red and Jonagold apples, and seasonal offerings like Strawberry Rhubarb, Apple Pie, and Imperial Blizzard, a winter warmer made with a blend of heirloom apples, cherries and sugar plums, all grown at Lagoner Farms. For those who like dryer, more complex ciders, the choices include The Heirloom, made with a blend of seven heirloom apples, and The Pippin, a limited-release semidry cider made with three varieties of heirloom Pippin apples, plus Rome Beauty.

The tasting room at Embark is open daily during the warm weather months and Friday, Saturday and Sunday year-round. An expanded taproom menu is planned for this year, along with plenty of events, including an outdoor concert series.

HISTORY CAN BE FUN, AND PEOPLE only need to travel as far as the Fort Ontario State Historic Site, on the east side of Oswego, to enjoy that fun — whether it’s taking a tour, enjoying a concert or going on a ghost hunt.

The current fort is built on the ruins of three earlier forts, the first one having been constructed in 1755. Throughout the centuries, its various incarnations and surrounding grounds have been the site of battles during the French and Indian Wars and the War of 1812 and as a Union recruitment center during the Civil War. It was occupied by the U.S. Army through World War II; served as a refugee camp for mostly Jewish victims of the Holocaust from 1944 to 1946; and was home to World War II vets and their families from 1946 to 1953.

Tucked into a corner of the site is a cemetery where 77 officers, soldiers, women and children who served at the fort over the years have been laid to rest.

“We have such a wide range of history, it gives people an opportunity to not just experience our history, but also to do that in an outside-inside environment,” according to Danielle

Funiciello, historic site assistant at the Fort.

The history becomes much more relatable, she said, with visitors having the chance to take self-guided tours where they can explore the interiors of the various buildings comprising the Fort; climb up on the ramparts to see the cannons and cannonballs and some commanding views of Lake Ontario; and get a sense of how people lived in the past.

Staff and volunteers, often dressed in clothing from 1868-69 when a post-Civil War Veteran’s Reserve Corps was stationed at the fort, re-enact chores and occupations from that era.

There are several special events planned for the summer that will appeal to history, fashion and music buffs.

• Women’s Weekend at Fort Ontario: A Symposium on Gender, Fashion, and Labor since 1755. The event will run June 24-25, with speakers and historical interpreters giving demonstrations of historical skills or discussing certain topics from women’s history. This will also include a “Fashion Timeline” fashion show, demonstrating clothing over the time that the fort has been in operation. On

Sunday, June 25, a new interpretive panel will be revealed that discusses the 19th century laundresses that were employed by the army. This will be followed with a talk by staffer Christina Goettel, who researched and wrote the panel, Funiciello said.

• Symphoria returns to present a free summer concert on the fort’s Parade Grounds on Friday, July 7, and Funicilcello said that fireworks fans flock to the lawn area outside the fort to enjoy the pyrotechnics during Harborfest celebration.

• A Civil War Living History Weekend is slated for Aug. 26-27, featuring an encampment of a group of historical interpreters, who are mainly dressed as Civil War era civilians. They will demonstrate and teach the public about a variety of trades from this period.

• During the Lantern Tours, costumed guides take visitors through grounds, sharing stories of “strange happenings,” Funiciello said, that have occurred at the fort over its long and colorful history. These walks, which are approximately 1.5 miles, are held one night a week toward the end of the summer. Specific dates had not been determined at publication time.

• A Fife and Drum Corps Day on Labor Day, Sept. 4, will feature groups from all over the world, Funiciello added.

• This year’s Ghost Hunt at the fort will be Oct. 14. It is a pre-sale tickets-only event in which visitors go out through the grounds with Central New York ghost hunter groups in search of apparitions. One of the more popular ghosts is Private George Fikes, a British soldier who died at the fort in 1782. Organizers say there may also be a ghost cat. Several employees, Funiciello said, have reported that when they go into the barracks building, they will sometimes feel something, like a cat, rubbing up against their legs. But there is, in fact, no cat there.

The fort is open Wednesdays through Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays through Sundays, from mid-May to mid-October. It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, except for holidays. Call 315-343-4711 for more information. Admission is $4 for adults; seniors, 62 and over, and students are $3.

New York’s BEST STATE PARKS

NEW YORK IS HOME TO MANY state parks that offer numerous ways to enjoy the outdoors this season. If you plan to visit many state parks, consider purchasing an Empire Pass, which with few exceptions offers free, all-day vehicle admission. The Empire Pass is available for on year ($80), three years ($205) five years ($320) or lifetime ($750) and is transferrable among your vehicles. These are only a few of New York’s 180 state parks. They’re all listed and searchable by amenities on the web.

WESTERN NEW YORK

Letchworth State Park is called the “Grand Canyon of the East” for its 600foot cliffs, gorges and rock formations among its more than 14,000 acres. Be sure to check out the three largest waterfalls in the park, the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls, from Inspiration Point, which offers the best view. The park provides 66 miles of trails to hike.

Niagara Falls has been designated as a National Heritage Area and offers the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center in Niagara Falls State Park as well as the Aquarium of Niagara and Cave of the Winds. Step onto the Hurricane Deck or ride the Maid of the Mist vessel to

get up-close to the Falls.

Allegany State Park sprawls across nearly 65,000 acres, representing the largest state park outside of the Adirondacks and Catskills. The towering trees of this mature forest inspire awe, along with boulders and other stone formations among the hiking trails. Numerous campsites, cabins and cottages are available.

FINGER LAKES

Chimney Bluffs State Park provides some of the state’s most unusual topography with numerous wind and water-carved, 150-foot pillars (the

“chimneys”) to view. Hike the upper trail through the wooded rim of the bluff, overlooking Lake Ontario, or get your toes wet along the lakeshore on the lower trail. The trails are relatively short, but the park provides 597 wooded, open and shoreline acres.

Robert H. Treman State Park boasts 1,000 acres and 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls. Explore its wooded landscape and gorges on six hiking trails between the Lower Falls and Upper Falls. During the summer, a lifeguard is available at the Lower Falls (also known as Enfield Falls) for swimming.

Taughannock Falls State Park represents another great state park near Ithaca. The park includes its namesake waterfall, which drops 215 feet, one of the largest drops on this side of the Rockies. With 750 acres to roam, Taughannock Falls provides plenty of room for hiking, camping and boating or kayaking on Cayuga Lake.

Don’t miss Allan H. Treman State Marine Park while in the Ithaca area if you want to enjoy the waters of Cayuga Lake. The park represents one of the state’s largest inland marinas with 370 seasonal, 30 transient and 30 dry boat slips.

Kerhonkson’s Minnewaska State Park boasts 50 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails through forests and rugged terrain and near waterfalls and lakes. CRAZY ABOUT COUNTY FAIRS? You’re in the Right Place

OF COURSE, YOU SHOULD GET TO the New York State Fair this season. The number of free attractions, unique food offerings and hundreds of animals make it the highlight of the season.

But county fairs can offer a lot of fun close to home for any New Yorker.

The state offers 45 county fairs (some counties share a fair).

Many of these began as a horse race or a few farmers gathering to display and sell their wares. As they established agricultural societies to build the industry, these groups continued the events that became county fairs. Agricultural organizations still manage most of the state’s fairs and make farming a major emphasis of their events.

Here is a list of some of the most popular county fairs:

ERIE COUNTY FAIR

The state’s largest county fair is also the fourth-largest nationwide. The Erie County Fair in Hamburg — just south of Buffalo — draws numbers rivaling that of the state fair and features a large midway, concerts and top name performers such as Chubby Checker and Clint Black. The 12-day ag-stravaganza includes Little Hands on the Farm, a barn for children; the Agriculture Discovery Center; Urban Farm Trial; blacksmith Shop with daily demonstrations; horse show rings; and horse headquarters. The competitions include an antique tractor invitational.

THE ALTAMONT FAIR

The Altamont Fair is New York’s only three-county fair, representing the official county fair for Albany, Greene and Schenectady counties. Anticipate a huge midway at Altamont, along with plenty of animals to enjoy, both on display and in competition. Sherman’s Lumberjack Show is one example of the unusual shows that visitors will experience.

HEMLOCK “LITTLE WORLD’S” FAIR

Livingston County’s official fair is the Hemlock “Little World’s” Fair. A fun feature of this fair is that the parking, events, grandstand shows, and midway rides are included in the admission price. Come early and stay late to take it all in. The fair includes an impressive number of animal competitors. Don’t miss the Heritage Museum. Although small, it’s packed with interesting displays from yesteryear as well as a display on the history of the fair’s beginning as a racetrack.

NEW YORK IS HOME TO ART trails, wine trails and culinary trails. But did you know there is also a New York State Birding Trail?

Yes — a trail devoted to our feathered friends.

The New York State Birding Trail is just what it sounds like, but it’s not a physical, connected trail. The trail list and map, a project of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, is more like a central clearinghouse of the top-flight bird-watching sites throughout the state. The list highlights 300 sites in nine regions, including Central New York and the Finger Lakes, the Capital region, and the Adirondacks-North Country.

The popularity of birdwatching soared during the pandemic and what seemed like never-ending stay-athome in 2020 and 2021, according to the National Audubon Society. Sales of bird feeders, bird food, birdbaths

and other bird-related merchandise boomed as people took to backyard birdwatching as a safe, socially distant activity — much like people took to gardening and canning.

The beauty of birdwatching is that it can be done by anyone anywhere, regardless of age, ability or background, the DEC notes. No special skills are required. Beginner birders might want to invest in binoculars and a field guide, suggests the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, at Cornell University in Ithaca.

If you have a smartphone, you can take photos of birds and notes on birds — and identify birds quickly and easily. The Merlin bird app, developed by the lab and launched in 2014, is designed to help people answer the eternal question, “What’s that bird?’’ For more information, visit https://merlin. allaboutbirds.org.

Want to venture off your porch, patio or deck and have a look at birds other than robins, sparrows and crows?

There’s no need to travel very far. Outstanding opportunities to observe birds in Onondaga County include Beaver Lake Nature Center

in Baldwinsville, the Camillus Forest Unique Area, Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville, Old Erie Canal State Historic Park (DeWitt and points east), the Hamlin Marsh Wildlife Management Area in Clay, and the Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area in Lysander.

Beaver Lake Nature Center, part of the Onondaga County parks system, offers weekday bird walks on Monday and Tuesday through June 27 — check out the center’s website and calendar for these and other bird-related activities. The guided walks are described as relaxing and are designed for both experienced birders and those who are new to birding.

Visitors can expect to see spring migrants and summer residents of the park’s meadows, lakeshore, forest, hedgerows and bog.

There are other notable NYS Birding Trail sites in the Central-Finger Lakes region. Check websites for birding and other summertime events:

• Derby Hill Bird Observatory, on Lake Ontario in Oswego County, is considered one of the most important hawk sites in the northeastern United

States. The observatory is owned and operated by the Onondaga Audubon Society, and it attracts thousands of hawks, snow geese and other birds as they migrate north each spring. Summer isn’t as dramatic as spring and fall, the website notes, but plenty of small birds, as well as bald eagles, can be spotted from the trails and lookouts at Derby Hill.

• Sterling Nature Center is a 1,400-acre Cayuga County park with 10 miles of walking, hiking, and birdwatching trails and scenic views of Lake Ontario and its bluffs. The center is noted for its Great Blue Heron rookery, and visitors can watch the herons from an observation deck (spring). Great horned owls and bald eagles also nest in the area.

• The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is a major stopping point for migrating birds. If you travel the New York State Thruway, you’ve probably seen the eye-catching sculpture of a bald eagle as the highway passes through the refuge in Seneca Falls. That’s just one section of the 10,000-acre refuge. Hundreds of species of birds, including bald eagles, are known to nest there. Birds can be observed from nature trails, towers, and decks, and the Montezuma Visitor Center is open daily from April through November.

• The Montezuma Audubon Center in Savannah, meanwhile, is a state-owned facility operated jointly by the state DEC and the National Audubon Society. It’s part of the 50,000-acre Montezuma Wetlands Complex and is designated an Important Bird Area. Programs include guided birding tours, guided hikes, and private birding tours. The center is open Tuesday to Saturday (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and nature trails are open daily, sunrise to sunset.

THOUGH THE PRECISE BOUNDARY IS UP FOR DEBATE, Upstate New York generally refers to the geographic region north of and excluding the New York City metropolitan area. It includes the cities of Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester.

Before European colonization, Upstate New York was populated by several Native American tribes and the home to the Six Nations. Beginning with the Dutch founding Fort Orange (present-day Albany) in 1624, the land was ceded from the indigenous tribes of the region. By the end of the American Revolutionary War, the land had all but been ceded over to European settlers in the formation of New York and the United States.

The 1825 opening of the Erie Canal across upstate transformed the economy, greatly increasing movement of goods across the state and ushering in a hotbed of manufacturing to the region during the Second Industrial Revolution.

Due to the vast swathes of ariable rural land, Upstate New York is home to a strong agricultural industry, known for its dairy, maple syrup, apples, and wine.
