Forbes, CAAE President 4:15 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. opening plenary Vaquero EF Higher Education in an Age of Innovation The future of higher education is in beta. An accelerating tidal wave of innovation is disrupting traditional models of linear academic progress and curriculum, as well as the relationships among student, teacher and educational institutions. This also raises basic questions about what it means to be educated in what some have called the “age of innovation,” and how that can best be accomplished. In this keynote, John Kao, whom The Economist called “Mr. Creativity,” will identify and illuminate the key, inevitable forces that are reshaping higher education and relate them to the evolving role of alumni relations. The current environment presents both unprecedented opportunity as well as challenges for the relationship between institutions of higher education and their alumni. Some pressing agenda items include reinventing the value proposition, experimenting with new ways of sustaining the relationship over time, leveraging new technologies and asserting relevance in a landscape of shifting employer requirements, career paths and 21st century skills. The need for practical innovation and bold action has never been greater. speaker John Kao, Innovator 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Terrace Court

Meeting Minutes: Summer 2016

IV. TREASURER’S REPORT

This report was deferred and will be distributed during a member email update.

V.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Laura Wayland reported we are at 86 members. Added 4 new members: UC Riverside, University of Miami, University of Chicago and Boston College. There was a question around what the optimum number for membership is and Wayland reported that the committee would be considering that based on a board discussion.

VIII. GOVERNANCE REPORT/ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS

Dick reported that the governance committee approached their task in an extremely thoughtful and careful manner. Members of the committee were Steve Hall, Bill Reynolds, Laura Wayland, Paula Bonner, and JT Forbes. Committee considered the board candidate profile which will be used when there is the next call for nominations. Great at asking tough questions such as what is the ideal balance on the board what should we be weighing and considering. Criteria were identified to consider candidates for the board so we have a more fulsome picture of the pool against CAAE needs.

The slate of candidates includes the appointed members for purposes of transparency even though the appointments are at the discretion of the President.

JT Forbes, Indiana, endorsed by the Governance Committee for the second year of his term as President until August 31, 2017.

VI. FELLOWS PROGRAM

Jennifer Heisey thanked the membership for their patience as the program was revamped. We have had a good number of applications and the committee will be reviewing the nominations and making decisions and announcing to the membership. We are wanting to grow applications and have tried to identify ways to open the process so it encourages more nominations.

VII. RESEARCH

Howard Wolf reminded the membership we were exploring a partnership with Gallup. Unfortunately Gallup was not responsive and the idea has been put aside. Meanwhile the board discussed and has decided to make what we already have more available. We’ve also decided to pull back more on the aggressive notion in the strategic plan that research could become a profit center. CASE however has identified research as a key priority and there is indication that they will want to partner with us on more substantive alumni engagement research.
